Maybe it's the abundance of Island food restaurants in this area but I wasn't entirely impressed or disappointed by Sweets. First the good, the rainbow otai is delicious! A perfect mixture of mango and red (watermelon?) otai. It's creamy and delicious. If I go back that is a must have when visiting. The bad was the food had an overly sweet flavor to it. I get it... in Utah we like our food sweet (sweet pork being the biggest culprit) every secret ingredient in anyone's BBQ around here is Dr. Pepper, the secret is out you can just tell everyone. But this food tastes extremely sweet compared to other similar restaurants. Maybe I went in a bad day but I do appreciate restaurants that are true to their origins and I feel like Sweets has a lot of options that you won't find in more commercial restaurants. read more

I was on a 10 hr road trip from Salt Lake City to San Diego. We were looking up places to eat and who would have thought to stop in Provo at this restaurant. We walked in and immediately felt welcome with my U of Utah gear on. Employees greeted us with smiles and could tell we had not been there before. They let me bring my pup in to cool down. Ever since they opened up in a little shack, around the corner from where they currently are, I loved the food at Sweets (I think it might have been named something else back then too but I'm getting old and my memory is fuzzy ;). I went frequently during my time at BYU and thought it was great when they moved to their current space. But time has changed the menu and food at Sweets. I asked if the menu changed (I was last in a year ago), and was told that it had in January. I got what I usually get: Kalua pork, lupulu, and chicken Katsu. It was a little pricier than before at $10, and the portion was MUCH less. I was disappointing just to look at the plate. Two small (small) scoops of rice with bad (salty) teriyaki sauce covering it. There were about 5 cut pieces of chicken katsu - and it was chicken breast! Many would think that, breast is good, but for katsu it's thigh that makes the best katsu. They used to use thigh here, but they don't anymore (and you thought I wouldn't notice). The katsu sauce was OK, but salty. The Kalua pork was very salty - yes it's supposed to be salty, but this was overly so. The lupulu which has historically been one of my favorites was the most disappointing. There used to be more substance to it with a larger portion. Now it's just leaves stewed in coconut milk - they used to add corned beef to it which really helps to make the dish. I really want to support these guys, but next time, this island food loving junkie will stick with L&L down the street, unless the food is drastically improved (portion and taste wise). read more

We are here in Utah visiting our daughter and son in law from California and they brought us here yesterday for lunch. This place is wonderful! Their food was so delicious. We all ordered something different and I tasted a little from everyone's plates and I couldn't decide what I loved best. It was all so good! Tasty food. I had the Sweets plate which consisted of teriyaki chicken, kalua pork, macaroni salad, and two rice balls/scoops. I really enjoyed it. The employee also suggested we try the otai drink. It is a mango, pineapple, coconut slushy/smoothie type drink. Very tasty. I'm a rice snob and their rice was moist and sticky (that is how it should be). The location is near Molly's restaurant which is also a good place to eat. I eat out a lot and I acknowledge that there are restaurants that are trying to be classy and unique. Then, there are restaurants that are local/hole-in-the wall that are serving great comfort food just to make you happy -- it may not be flashy, but you are full and happy when you leave. You know, I was really hoping that this place would be good. It's local, it's family-owned, and it's close to work. My coworkers told me that the last time they went, there was so much salt you would have thought they accidentally dropped a salt shaker on everything. But then another coworker went there and thought that the food was really good. So, we decided to try it out once more. Now I wish I hadn't. The pork was watered down almost passed the point of recognition. The teriyaki chicken was decent, but extremely salty. The only thing I could enjoy was the rice, but then, how can you really screw up rice? I was sorely disappointed. Even worse, I was sad that I was so disappointed. Come on, people, add something other than water and salt to your food. The location of this place is pretty horrible as well. You're pretty much only driving by it to go to the local thrift store, and it's essentially in a residential neighborhood. The huge statue outside doesn't make it any more appealing, and the same with the student discount banner for buy one get one free. I can't even say that it's worth half the price. I'm sorry, really sorry Sweet's! If you just try to make the pork a little more flavorful and the chicken less like I'm sucking on a Morton salt container, we can talk again. read more

I got recommended this place by a friend and I'm so glad I came and tried It! It was my first time there and first time having Hawaiian food and it was amazing! The people there were so nice, And I really liked the atmosphere. I got the teriyaki chicken with noodles and a watermelon mango otai. We bought 3 different dishes with a total of 8 different food items. It was pretty good, but the quality of the dishes was very hit-or-miss. For instance, the quality of the Mahi-mahi was great, the beef was great, and the sausage was great, but the chicken was not good (fatty and full of veins and knuckles). They recently changed their menu, so the items available on their web sites were not correct. When I ordered on the phone, they had to call me back twice before I could place an accurate order (having been forced to change my order 3 times), and although there were only 2 other guests in the restaurant when I arrived, it took twice as long to prepare the meal as they told me it would. Once the meal was ready, I was asked to then pay more than the cost of my order so that the owners wouldn't incur an extra credit card transaction fee. So overall, the food was good, but their new menu is pretty disappointing, they complained to me about their credit card arrangements, and their preparation time was twice what they told me it would be. I wanted this to be the best food Island cuisine in Provo, but it wasn't. There are better options in the area. read more
