Was on my way back home to Portland Oregon and HAD to make this slight detour to find Smokin' Joe's…read moreBBQ. And I am SO GLAD I did! Got the Combo Plate with Ribs and Chicken along with their baked beans and smoke yams and got a side of their Tritip just for good measure. Portions are generous and their food is Blissfully Good! Their Service was fine, but what made it great was the additional hospitality of their Owner insisting that I have a sample of their Smoked Pastrami with their special in house made Carolina Mustard Based BBQ Sauce. This is certainly a place I have to come back for it all and more.

I have to tell you , truthfully, I called 10 minutes before they were about to close . I begged the lady on the phone , I need to order something. I gotta try your barbecue I'm only 7 minutes away. So they put together a phone order, I showed up and who was sitting at the table but Joe. You talk about a friendly guy, we sat and chatted. I ended up opening up my meal, calling my sister to come in from the car and sit down. He went in the back and made me some concoction that was out of this world. Here's the thing the Carolina barbecue sauce made with the mustard is so freaking phenomenal. I bought a container of it and brought it home and put it in a glass jar and have been allowing my children to taste it on the back of a spoon and tonight we're actually going to barbecue wings and toss them in it. Hands down "This is the best Carolina honey barbecue sauce" I've ever tasted and I've tasted a lot. Whatever his secret is, I would love to have it cause I want to can it and I'm not sure why he doesn't bottle this and sell it himself. It is literally gold in a bottle. Now, as far as their sweet potatoes, I was so impressed because usually when you go to a barbecue place, they give you orange yams and call them sweet potatoes. Not this guy he had straight yellow sweet potatoes with some type of honey brown sugar goodness dripping over the top. The pork ribs were fantastic and so were the smothered fries with the barbecued pork my Lord just rub it on my hips. The hospitality was phenomenal. He gave me a little bit of his rub that he puts on his ribs. Just so I could smell it and have a sample because I am a chef. I told him he needs to come up to where we're from in Portland, Oregon, and bring his barbecue. Don't miss this spot it's BBq to live for!!!

EVERYTHING about O'Dell's has been top shelf. We were in Redding recently for scheduled tastings…read morefor our daughter & future son-in-law's wedding, and started the dinner tastings at O'Dells. Little did we realize, no one else could compare! From initial email correspondence to picking up the leftovers, our contact Ashley was the model of professionalism, accuracy and kindness. She is a true Brand Ambassador! Upon arrival, we had a reserved table marked & waiting for us, we were greeted like family friends, the team was happy to delay our tasting a bit when some of the party arrived a little later than planned (yours truly), we were treated to a tableside discussion with one of the chefs, were presented with 3 trays of bread & salads, meat choices, sauces and condiments, and then following, a dessert of sampling of their killer lemon bars. After a brief conversation with us, the chef even presented us with a post-wedding snack that he whipped-up for us: barbacoa street tacos! OKAY, let's talk about their food. If you love smoked meats, this is the caterer for you. From the brisket & tri tip to ribs and shredded pork, everything was juicy and delicious, wonderful in their perfect smokiness. The poultry options were equally as great, although we all agreed the meat stole the show. The variety of homemade sauces were equally amazing, we especially loved the espresso bbq (WOWZA). Salad choices: something for everyone- we especially liked their vinegar based slaw and potato salad. The pillowy-soft honey butter rolls are to die for-practically dessert on their own. THEN there were the fresh-made lemon bars. Oo la la - they tasted like a mini lemon meringue pie. Too bad none were leftover for our late-night snacking! All tolled, the overall impression O'Dells team gave us for our kids BIG DAY could not be beat. They answered all our questions and were reassuring in describing their delivery & service the day of wedding (a remote location near McCloud). Through conversation, they proved what creative culinary professionals they are, identified the many local business contacts they work with (some we have also contracted) and THAT FOOD! If you are in the neighborhood on a Thursday or Friday for lunch, stop in. They are working on a restaurant across the street, but just be aware that these guys are POP-U-LAR and sell out pretty quickly on their open days. We can't wait to sample their great cuisine again soon, and especially on the big day. You will love it!!

Assistance+ Balance+…read moreCleanliness+ Deliciousness++ Environment+ Assistance: service was prompt professional and kind, we were greeted warmly and treated kindly. Our waitress was wonderful, the cook was prompt and masterful, the Owner oversaw his restaurant like a proud Lord watching over his kingdom, greeting friends and customers warmly. Balance: quantity and quality versus price were good. Cleanliness: the restaurant was good and good clean order, only complaint is there were a few flys. Clearly the opportunistic as it seemed every time someone would open a door a fly would charge in as quickly as they could following the sweet sweet smell of barbecue. Deliciousness: when I tell you I'm a barbecue snob, I mean it in every sense of the word. I've been grilling since I was a child, I've lived in the south I've lived in the east I've lived on the West Coast and I've lived in the Carolinas. My palate is normally greatly displeased with every barbecue I encounter but I take it for its own merit. Each grill master has their own ups and downs. So when I tell you this was some of the best barbecue I've ever had in my life you can take it as gospel. What you taste when you eat the barbecue here is the meat, the smoke, and the love that goes into it which is a vague term that is hard to define, if I were to try I would have to say that it's a combination of care, the way they prepare it and take care of the meat after it's prepared, seasoning, seasoning is very easy to overdo depending on the meat how long it's going to be cooked what cut it is where it came from how it was processed etc, and how they cut slice or prepare it. That's what love means when it comes to grilling and barbecue. Care, seasoning, preparation. So yes, Old Mill Eatery and Smokehouse blew me away. I only sampled their ground beef, bacon, and tri-tip, but if those are any indicator at the mastery they have over meat I am looking forward to trying everything they have to offer. My tri-tip was cooked to perfection, I could taste the beef, although it was shaved very thin because I had it on a sandwich I could still tell it was tri-tip and not just roast beef being pushed off as tri-tip, the bread was fluffy and fresh and seared with a bit of butter, soft and warm but crisp on the edge, the onion rings were fluffy and yet crispy on the outside, the garlic tater tots were perfect in every way crispy crunchy and savory, the bacon blue Burger was cooked to perfection it was not overpowered by blue cheese crumble and the bacon almost seemed as if it was not only peppered but candied in thick slabs, the side order of garlic bread was perfectly cooked crisp on the edges fluffy in the middle buttery and garlicky as it should be. Absolutely incredible top marks! Environment: there are only a few tables as the restaurant is a bit smaller but what they do with their space is comfortable and works. The restaurant itself is decorated like a lodge, reminiscent of a sawmill or a logging camp, with treated wood and a log cabin aesthetic, the decorations themselves consist mostly of historic articles and photos of both friend and family and the history of the restaurant. They also sell very cool cups that I definitely meant to get and will have to go back to that one for myself and the Missus. I need to make a mental note of that. All together this was a fantastic experience and I can't wait to go back. Their menu had so many things I want to try. The French toast tacos caught my eye definitely going to try that. But more importantly to me I want more of that barbecue, I want to try the brisket, sausage, chicken, pulled pork, I want to try it all! If the other items are half as good as what I had today I don't think I need to eat anywhere else. If you find yourself in Shasta Lake do yourself a favor and try the Old Mill Eatery and Smokehouse. See if you can take on their Giant Smokehouse Burger or a Pit Master challenge.

I'm not one to blast social media but I definitely felt I should contact you. The resturant was clean and inviting and the service was friendly but the food was not good. We ordered a rib plate, tri tip plate and kabob plate with cowboy caviar, Mac and cheese and potato salad. First the ranch salad dressing that came on the house salad tasted like warm hidden valley ranch from a bottle not good, the potatos in the potato salad were hard and massive chuncks which were difficult to even cut smaller do to the doneness and there was no flavor in it other then mayo and egg, the mac and cheese tasted as though it was a day or so old and reheated and again flavorless but was not grainy like some, the cowboy caviar was ok could have done with a little less liquid. The tri tip plate came with 3 small pieces of meat the flavor was fine but not the amount you expect for a $30 plate of food there was more bread then meat. The Rib plate the beef ribs were dry and hardly any meat and you ran out of them so we ended up with a some pork ribs that were greasy and flavorless. The kabobs were a good size and the meat was cooked well but it was so over peppered you could barely eat them. Your beer choices were good and the bloody mary we ordered was fine.We eat out 2 times a month as our family treat especially bbq and steak house type places and I was really sad to be unable too reccomended your location. To top it off all 3 of us have had stomach issues since last night and into today. I really hope this feed back helps and some changes can be made as I am a big supporter of small business but For $130 with out the tip absolutely disappointing and that is alot of money for our one income family to spend.

They should use something other than the super processed cheap American cheese though, that was a big chemical tasting distraction from an otherwise good sandwich. I had two eggs with hashbrows and an English muffin. I asked for my eggs to be soft scrambled...and they were perfect. That is not usual as soft scrambled is very hard to do right. The hashbrowns were frozen (so are the country potatoes according to the server) so not horrible but not great. My English muffin was toasted well and buttered well so points for that. Service was also nice and prompt. We would come again if in the area.
