Nice little establishment hidden amongst shopping plazas. As you enter it smells amazing. The walls and tables are decorated with ocean and beach decor. There is a definite ocean/ seafood feel. I was greater by a shy but pleasant and friendly young lady. She was helpful with the menu options and helped me understand the different specials for the day. I ordered the 1-piece fish, fried cheese bread and cup of chowder with a drink for $16.49. And just because I was craving shrimp as well, I also ordered a shrimp cocktail. This ended up being a lot more good than I could eat, and quite honestly, a great deal for the amount of food for under $30 nowadays!! The cocktail sauce is great; it has a little spicy kick but not too much to ruin the shrimp. The clam chowder is awesome. There is a lot of clam pieces, the flavor is really good and it was very filling. The fish cooked perfectly and not overly breaded and not over cooked. I was very impressed. The fried cheese bread is weird "to me" but it has a good flavor. I just wasn't crazy about the texture. Overall, if you're in the area, this is a must stop. I'm so happy I ate dinner here. The service was great, the girl working was so friendly and nice. She even brough water out for our pup. We appreciated they had outside seating so we could enjoy lunch outside of the car. I stop here occasionally because they have good food and good portions! It's a cute little place for a quick bite, casual nothing fancy. It's set up like a fast food restaurant, you order and pay at the register, they call your number and you go get your food and fill your drink. I was surprised they still expect sit-down full service tipping here though? The options were 18, 20 & 25%. I even have to clean up my table after eating. Being that my wife and I have been by this place before, where we went to a Restaurant across the Shopping Center, we have admired this place from a far but never had an idea about going in and eating at this establishment. So yesterday we made the decision to enter into the Restaurant because we wanted something different. I mean we have eaten Seafood before but not since we have moved back to Redding 10 months ago. So we walked into the Restaurant and at first we saw a few people in the restaurant and when we approached the counter and looked at the menu there were so many wonderful items to choose from. When the Cashier got back to the front he asked us what we wanted and we said that we wanted an appetizer of Half Mushrooms and Half Hush Puppies, which was a great recommendation. We first started off unsure of what appetizer we wanted and he said that we had the option of choosing either 1 basket of a specific appetizer or we could go half of something and then half of something else. So glad that we went half mushrooms and half hush puppies. They were absolutely delicious and scalding hot. (Which is a good problem to have when food comes right out of the kitchen) The cashier brought us an arrangement of items to begin with. Cole Slaw, Lemons, and Tartar Sauce. My wife tasted the Cole Slaw and had this look in her eyes that the Cole Slaw was absolutel delicious. So I asked her "How's the Cole Slaw?" She said "Taste it!" As soon as I put it into my mouth I immediately knew that the food was going to taste great! She ordered Oysters and I ordered Fish Tacos. As soon as I tasted the Fish Taco, I enjoyed the Fish Tacos but, gotta remember to leave the Chipotle Sauce off next time. My wife enjoyed her Fried Oysters. However the Curly Fries had a bit of a vinegary taste. Overall from the Service to the food, we enjoyed everything. Even got the opportunity to talk to the owner about the Restaurant and the Food. She is from Alabama and is very friendly and gave good recommendations about the food and what we should try next time. I am perplexed...I have trusted Yelp in cities all over the country when looking for restaurants and I can't believe it got a 4 plus stars! Ambiance was fine for a walk up counter place but the fish and chips were terrible! They were large but most of it was breading not fish. I also got clam chowder in a bread bowl which was the consistency of a thick plop of gravy and I more than once crunched on some sand. Our server was nice and attentive. Great First Visit to Portside We stopped into Portside for the first time and were immediately impressed. The place smelled fresh and clean--which is always a good first sign. Seems like this place just opened recently. I'm not a local, so when I searched this area for fish and chips, yelp came up with this place. Looking at the map, it's very misleading as to the location, it looks like it's on the freeway! It took a bit of searching with google and streetview to figure out where this place was. The marked location on Yelp maps is correct, it's just that you access the location through a shopping center off a different street, You'd prob know this id you were a local and shopped here. After finding the place, parking was no prob. It wasn't super crowded or anything. Looking at the menu, the prices seemed a little higher then the prices of the many fish and chip places we have in the Sac area. Prices were about a dollar more for the same 2 piece fish and chips. I went for the 3 piece option. The order came out in a timely manner and the fish looked about the same as what I'm used to. I think the fish used is pollock. The fries are a funny shape, I've seen these before in another restaurant, but can't remember where. I think this is the only fish and chips specific restaurant in the area. They also have other seafoods fried, like scallops. I'd come back again, as I might be moving to the Red Bluff area. read more

We tried portside fish and chips we thought we heard good reviews and we read bad reviews but it's a train it we will not go back just for three of us it came out to over $80 and we just had we didn't have alcohol we just have plain drinks we tried side dishes only two the zucchini they were long bigger but the oil needed to be changed more frequently I think just my personal opinion and I eat a lot of seafood I don't eat red meat so try it have you make your review on it but the service was okay but ambience is a place wearing Blue jeans is suitable. They got 2 choices, I think it's steak fries or something like it and skinny fries which look like a potato wedge but skinnier and curled. It wasn't too greasy. Nothing like Long Dong Silvers. Lol. The food wasn't over cooked and didn't have a burnt taste like some places that doesn't change their oil regularly. The clam chowder is "Excellent"!!!
