LOL My husband bought a pair of Nikes and it ended up being uncomfortable and caused a bruised toe, which never happened with any of his athletic shoes. He was ready to toss his shoe aside but I told him Swetka's back their products so you can get a credit or exchange. Sure enough, that's what we did! I've been a Swetka's patron since I was a kid, back when they had another shop in Saratoga's Argonaut Center. My favorite thing about this store is that they have a demo program where, if you pay $40, you can borrow a different demo racquet for a week at a time to test it out before you commit to shelling out $200+ for a new racquet. And, when you finally decide to buy your racquet, they will apply that $40 to the purchase! Swetka's will also give you a discount if you buy 2 or more racquets. After salivating over the Babolat Pure Drive in college, the not playing for over a decade, I finally got back into tennis and wanted to try playing with that specific racquet. After testing out many recommended racquets from multiple different manufacturers and in many different styles, I actually ended up buying the Babolat Pure Aero instead, upon one helpful Swetka staff member's suggestion. And I'm super happy with my purchase! Swetka's also has a ton of options when it comes to all things tennis. Of course, they have a wide variety of different racquets to choose from, but they also have strings, racquet handle wraps, shoes, apparel, you name it and they have all of the tennis-related paraphernalia you can think of! All of the staff are obviously big tennis fans and are willing and able to give you technical advice if you want it. I had to get my tennis racquet restrung as the strings broke. Ken was fantastic in guiding me through my options. From new racquets to new strings-- natural vs polyester vs synthetic vs multifilament, gauge, tension, how often I should restring.... everything. Decided to go with Rafa's setup (Babolat RPM Blast 16g, ~55lbs) and I can already see a noticeable difference. I had my own overgrip and they happily offered to put it on for me. So glad because the job is far better than I would've done myself and literally took him 30 seconds! I included some tennis string prices in the attached photo which include labor to give you an idea of relative cost. Note the prices are planned to increase by a few bucks in April 2022. Overall, I'm a very happy customer with Swetka's and will definitely return. These guys know what they're talking about, are specialized in restringing as compared to places like DicksSportingGoods, supports local business, and they have a frequent stringers club (after 10 restringings, you get one free). read more

I've been playing tennis regularly since 1981, and league tennis since 1997 in the South Bay, but have only been to Swetka's a handful of times. Why so few times? Here's why. Got a notice in the mail of Swetka's store wide July 4 sale, with 10%-40% off. Checked out their clothing, looking for men's tennis shorts, but found the only items 40% off were certain women's apparel. About 5 years ago, I got a used Prince 110 Silver O Ring racquet used at Swetka's during a sale, and loved it. Unfortunately all the tennis manufacturers bring out new racquets and discontinue old racquets, as part of their marketing. The Silver O Ring racquet is no longer manufactured. I looked over their used racquets, and asked if they had anything similar. The store assistant brought out two racquets, but they were not Prince racquets, so I didn't buy them. In fact Swetka's doesn't sell new Prince racquets anymore, based on their website. One of my fellow tennis players just purchased a new Yonex tennis racquet at Swetka's, after being in the demo program for ages. The guy was 80 years old, and we wondered if he would live to see the day he got out of the demo program! Checked out the top of the line tennis shoes, and all were $100+, and only 10% off during the sale. Ended up getting basic Dunlop tennis balls at $1.99 each, limit 6 cans. Went over to Big 5 Sporting Goods, and used a $10 off minimum $30 coupon purchase to get 9 cans of top of the line Penn ATP tennis balls, normally $3.50 a can, but now $2.39 a can with the mailer coupon. Drove 4.5 miles back to Sunnyvale Tennis Center, and the Lifetime Tennis Pro Shop. Found some Head Revolt 2.5 tennis shoes, originally $119 (current price on Amazon), discounted to $85, and now marked down to $53 for July 4th only. Added it to my collection of 5 pairs of shoes purchased here in the past 4 years originally $89-$119, and purchased for $50-$59 at Lifetime Tennis. Goes to show that Lifetime Tennis in Sunnyvale discounts tennis shoes, tennis clothes and tennis racquets much more than Swetka's. Of course there is a reason the tennis shoes and clothes are severely discounted at Lifetime tennis. If you see me in men's red and white tennis shoes and a bright red long sleeve tennis shirt (for protection from the sun) , I'm not crossdressing, but simply wearing the shoes and clothes that were on sale. Wore the red tennis shoes to the court one day, and someone asked if it came with wheels and bright lights, as you see on kid's shoes! It is what it is. read more

There aren't a lot of full service tennis-only shops in the area, i.e., rackets, stringing, apparel. And when you try to do research online, there are so many different opinions about a topic that it's hard to get your specific question answered. All that to say, I wanted to talk to a real person about my problem with my strings moving around too much. The guy (owner/manager?) told me I probably want to go with a poly, gave me some recommendations, explained differences among the strings, and then I picked one. It was a 1-day turn around for the restrung racket, and I loved it. It took my unplayable racket (restrung a while back based on poor internet advice) and made it totally playable again! The shop is a little pricey, but in the end, I got my problem solved, so I was happy. read more

Swetka's renter program where they allow you to rent a new racket on a weekly basis till you find the one you like, is an absolute steal. There's mixed reviews for this tennis shop so I was hesitant at first about coming here, but personally I had a superb experience. My friend recommended Swetka's to me because of their demo program and I was looking to purchase a new racket. It's $40, and you can test 1 racket/week for 3 months (can bring back to store earlier than 1 week to exchange for another racket). The $40 goes towards a new racket and stringing if you purchase it within the 3 month period. I think the program is pretty good, considering a string job in this area is around $30-40 depending on type of strings you want. The staff are knowledgeable about the rackets and gave me recommendations of the next racket to try, depending on whether I liked the racket I just demo'ed or not. They weren't pushy or sales-y. I demo'ed multiple rackets and eventually came down to two that I liked. Surprisingly, they allowed me to check both of them out at once so I could compare the two side by side. Swetka's had a 50th anniversary sale, so I took advantage of that to purchase my racket (Head 360 Graphene Radical MP) at $20 off. It's a newly released racket, so I haven't really seen it on sale anywhere yet. Definitely worth checking out Swetka's for the demo program and stringing (they did a much better job than Sports Basement). For tennis shoes or clothing, I tend to order online directly from Nike, Adidas, or Dick's Sporting Goods when they have sales. read more

We have been coming here for years for all of our tennis needs. Staff is very knowledgeable and helpful. Love the fact that this business is owned by two brothers and not by a large corporation. They have good sales and put their demo racquets on sale when new models are released. We have all of our racquets strung here which usually takes 2-3 days and they text me when my racquet is ready to be picked up. There are very few good tennis shops around and this is our go-to tennis store. read more

This is the local shop that we go to for tennis supplies. They have great racquet demo program, tennis shoe selection is very decent, and the price is comparable to on line stores. I brought my son to the store today to try out different tennis shoes, the gentleman who helped us out are very nice and patient. Went in to buy tennis shoes. Guy was really nice, knew I was not trying to spend a lot so he just brought me few pairs in my size and color to try on and were all cheaper shoes. They were having a sale and I bought a Nike Court Lite for women, the (sale) price for it was cheaper than buying it from Nike or Foot Locker, but more expensive than buying it from Dick's Sporting Goods (who was also having a sale), just so you can get a feel for prices. But yes as said, the two guys working at the place were very helpful and friendly. Did some demos when I asked what something was. Customers were friendly too, over all good vibes. read more

Very unethical behavior, especially from the main guy, John Swetka. Came in to trade-in lightly used current racket as it was too heavy for my 55 yr old arms for a newer racket. I was quoted a certain price for the racket and I let them hold onto it right away. The agreement was that I can use that trade-in value for my new racket. Things that went wrong: 1. Did the demo program. They made me feel so inadequate and my wife (former college player in the 80s) realized none of them know what they're talking about. 2. Finally found the racket I wanted but he decreased the value of my trade-in racket by more than 25%. It was in their hands the entire time and he had already sold it. I should've got the agreement in writing but I didn't expect such unethical behavior. 3. On top of that, they almost made me repay the strings and labor I already paid for my new racket when I chose it. Luckily, I had my receipt to prove it and they disgruntedly had to accept it. Recommendations: 1. Don't shop here. Go to stores in Palo alto or San Jose or even better Tennis Warehouse. Cheaper prices too. 2. If you do shop here, get everything in writing, have them sign it and keep two copies. Extremely unethical behavior. 3. Also if you need to restring your rackets. Don't pay $25 for labor... Go to any of the nearby Lifetime Activities and get it done for $17 and quick turnaround. I can see why companies like Wilson and Head are selling direct to consumer now or via Tennis Warehouse. read more

there aren't too many tennis specialty stores near where i live, so i was happy to see this one. as a former high school player, i now play for recreational purposes, and only when i'm healthy and don't have any injuries. as we age, it is definitely harder to stay 100% healthy, and tennis is one of those sports that pretty much requires all the major muscle groups to be injury and pain free. i've walked in here a few times to check out their merchandise and inquire about racket stringing and labour costs. i really like their selection of women's tennis clothing as they have everything from tennis skirts to tennis dresses to colourful accessories to complete that outfit for your next tennis match! i can't comment on the men's clothing section as i haven't perused the guys' stuff, yet. the staff is very friendly and very knowledgeable, which i appreciate. i definitely sense that homey feeling whenever i walk into this store. if you're a tennis buff or player (recreational or competitive), you should definitely check out this store. read more

This store really deserves 0 stars and the main reason is the lack of integrity in running their business. I'm a beginner and joined their demo program to try out rackets before purchasing one, which was $40 for 3 months. Before joining, I enquired with their owner John Svetka whether they match prices offered by local stores or online and his reply was "yes, but ours is usually the best prices already". Without verifying that claim, I signed up thinking I had nothing to lose. Nearing the end of my demo program I went to purchase a racket of my liking and found that the Pro Shop at the Tennis Center in Sunnyvale (less than 2 miles away) was selling the same racket for 30% off and $54 less than Svetkas' sale price. (I even had a picture of their prices and ad). When I asked John if he can match that price or at least partially match it, he got totally mad at me. He rudely responded that if I want lower prices, I can very well go and purchase it at the Pro Shop. He also looked very agitated that they are selling it for such a price and showed his discontent towards me for some reason. He should have either declined initially saying he wouldn't match prices before I signed up or honor his word and match the prices when asked. At the very least he could have treated me better as a customer. I still purchased the racket from them as I felt they had helped me with the demo program and it is only fair for me to give my business to them even though I felt very insulted as a customer. However, this would be the last time I go there for my tennis needs and will strongly discourage my tennis buddies from going there again. Objective review of the store: Pros: - Bigger selection of demo rackets and tennis clothing - A selection of used rackets Cons: - Overpriced everything from rackets, shoes and accessories. - Rude service - Pushing novices to purchase less popular/bad-selling rackets by asking them to demo those Recommendation: If you want the best value for your money and superior service, go to the Pro Shop at the tennis center, Sunnyvale where they consistently have great sale on rackets, strings and shoes. I went in here a while ago, also surprised and happy to see that there was a tennis shop around. Yeah.. that was a quick trip. Boutique prices, boutique attitude, and all the markings of the kind of business that goes away because it can't otherwise compete with online or larger chain stores. I wasn't impressed with the service, the stringing turnaround time, nor the prices. I wasn't looking for bargain basement prices, and maybe places like this have to sell at full MSRP, but there are other ways of compensating to make a business stand out... if I knew of all them, then of course I'd be running my own. read more

This review is based on a couple of recent visits. I've never been much of a sports person, and only recently took up pickleball, which meant that I needed to get some court shoes. I had some vague recollection of Swetka's from when my daughter played tennis many years ago. I was pleased to see that they are still in business. It says a lot that a locally owned store has managed to stay in business for decades. I figured I'd go there for some court shoes, despite feeling a bit intimidated about going into a serious tennis shop, when I was just a newbie at pickleball. My concerns were quickly put to rest. The gentleman who helped me was completely courteous and knowledgeable. He very quickly pulled out a few shoes for me to try on, based on my needs. I narrowed them down to a couple pairs. This sales person helped me decide between the two, based on the fit that people usually prefer in court shoes. I've had these shoes for several weeks now, have used them quite a bit, and I love them--not only for pickleball, but also for Zumba. :-) I returned to Swetka's last week to shop for some sunglasses that would stay in place when I got sweaty and wouldn't make contact with my cheeks. This sales person (different from the previous one) was also courteous, knowledgeable, and efficient. He quickly understood what I was looking for and pulled out a few options. As I tried them on, and we could see what was working & what wasn't, he pulled out a few more. I selected a pair of Maui Jim's, which the sales person said were also good for driving. They instantly became my all purpose sunglasses, completely functional and so comfortable. While shopping for the glasses, I also decided to look at some women's tops. Nice tennis tops aren't cheap, but I found a Liji top on sale for 40% off. I've worn it a couple of times and really like it a lot. All in all, based on my experience, Swetka's carries quality merchandise and can't be beat for customer service. Keep up the great work! read more

I signed up for the demo program and was trying out a racket week by week in the winter. Coldness, and training for a marathon, pulled me off tennis for some time. I'm hoping they can keep me in the program. I went back after a hiatus and they didn't have my paperwork saying they get rid dormant files after a year. Well, it's been about 6 months since I was in their shop. I'm hoping they let me pick up with the program as I had only used about 5-6 weeks of the four month loaner deal. (I photographed my rackets and added comments on my Flickr stream, so I'm certain of the date I started.) I would be surprised if they didn't. It seems they could hold me to the rule of 4-months and lose me as a customer and keep my 40 bucks, or they could allow me to keep coming in every week and make me a happy customer. From $159 to $189 in a week! I knew the prices because I was there every week because of the DEMO program. Their demo racket program is what this shop is all about. Try a racquet for a week (or less) for 4 months for $40, which is applied to the purchase of a new racket. This allowed me to demo quite a few rackets, choose one and buy one of the new pair of rackets from e-bay and the other from swetka's. Their prices aren't exactly low otherwise. The staff knows what they're talking about (and they can get a sense of the kind of player you are after a few runs in and out of the store for more demos). Most of the stuffs are pretty Expensive... likely 30% or 40% more compare to one line. For example, a pack of wilson tennis grip for $3.99 online, cost $5.99 there. My second time went there, I just used a free tennis coupon to pick up a can of free ball, I don't think I will go back there for awhile. read more

I was in the area and had seen their ad in a tennis publication, so I made a side trip over here. I finally discovered their hard to find strip mall location, and walking in I wasn't expecting much, but the number of frames available, as well as the huge number of demo frames (as well as used demo frames for sale) was very impressive. They even had live tennis going on the TV screens. I can't comment on the stringing prices, but the price of frames was about what everyone else charges, including the ever-popular Tennis Warehouse. Balls were loss-leaders at $1.99/can but it sure beats shopping at Target. They even stocked a grommet set for my now-discontinued frame. Yeah, it was $15 or roughly 2x the price I could buy it for online, but it's hard to find so I didn't complain. Those of you rating 3 stars and below should try living in an area with no decent tennis shops. Frankly, you're spoiled to have this one and others like it around. read more

These guys do a very good job on stringing. Always consistent with the tension and feel on my racquets. Prices on stringing are reasonable in comparison with other shops in the Bay Area. My only complaint is when you buy a $200 racquet from them, they don't throw in a free set of strings when most boutique tennis shops will comp you synthetic strings when you buy a racquet. read more

I've been a Swetka's customer for over 10 years and I hope to be their customer until i stop playing tennis or move out of the area.... Why? Great inventory, very generous demo program and fairly frequent sales of stuff I would actually buy! I find their prices to be pretty good and they will match web prices from authorized dealers. I'm very particular about my stringing and I have my favorites at the shop but I'm always impressed by their consistency when it comes to their string jobs (Head Sonic Pro Edge @50lbs Head Radical Pro Graphene) and on more than one occasion when my strings popped prematurely for one reason or another, they've been good about a complimentary string job or a generous discount, even if no fault on them. Granted I'll go online if I can't find something I'm looking for but the majority of the time the guys in the shop can order what I'm looking for and have it ready for me with very little wait. read more

Be careful with demo program! When you sign up for the program, you pay $40.00 and you can demo different racquets for a 3 month period (1 at the time per week). When you are ready to buy a racquet, you are supposed to get a $40.00 credit towards the purchase of the new one BUT then you get the news you must buy the strings from them. They DO NOT disclose this when you sign up for the demo program. Besides the strings and labor are overpriced. You end up paying more for a brand new racquet here than in other tennis shops. 3 stars for not fully disclosing. read more

When you purchase a racquet, the $40 is applied toward your purchase. Great ball prices too! Very knowledgeable and customer focused staff.
