I have been working around Farragut since October and just discovered this place a month or so ago. I am hooked! It's pretty difficult to find a coffee place that isn't a chain in the area and this has been a gem of a find. Between me and my coworkers, we've tried quite an array of drinks and are always pleasantly surprised. For the same price, this is definitely a better treat if you're heading out for coffee. I have tried hot, iced, espresso based, regular coffee, and I couldn't be happier. Haven't gotten through their selection of pastries/doughnuts, yet. There are lots of tables and chairs outside close by, and lots of seating inside as well. Haven't spent much time in the place, but it has a pretty serene feel. read more

Miserable coffee. The cup I just ordered tastes the way orange juice tastes after you brush your teeth. The fact that this place is so highly rated is just an indication of how inferior the coffee is in DC compared to real cafe cities like New York or San Francisco. A real, traditional, legitimate coffee shop. Hand pulled shots, saloon feel, and a bustling waiting area. While some may think the milk bar and waiting area is too small, I can only say that it is great to have such a perfect location to mingle with anyone and everyone who isn't power suiting their way through their fifth daily cup. This place has an old feel to it, yet they have embraced new payment options (which finally allow you to tip with a debit card in a simple manner!). I'm not a coffee fiend; I'm not addicted to Starbucks or Caribou like half of America is, but I have to promote that this is one of the best coffees I've ever had. They say they ground their coffee beans fresh in the morning, and I believe them. The prices are great and the coffee is seriously amazing. The only complaint is the lines. I am big on private coffee companies. I have two in my hometown of Durango, and my most favorite coffee on the PLANET comes from a little private distributor out of Maui. I am not a coffee connoisseur, but I am pretty anti-Starbucks (although even I can't resist a Chai eggnog latte or two around the holidays...). When planning my DC trip, I wanted to accomplish at least two things: I wanted to try a local ice cream place, and I wanted to try a local coffee place. Well, consider Goal #2 achieved. Now I know, I know, the coffee isn't "local," per se, it's from all over, but I wanted the feel and the location of the place to be strictly local. And I certainly got it. E and I were seemingly the only tourists in there, and since we are tourists ourselves we're pretty adept at spotting disoriented, wandering souls like us :) I am pretty sure all the tourists were clustered in the Caribou Coffee around the corner, savoring its familiarity, but not this girl. The interior is fantastic. It's lots of marble and polished wood and bins and barrels of coffee beans. E and I both got brewed coffees - he the High Mountain blend and I the Sumatran special. Mine was strong, as a Sumatran should be, and both had a beautiful flavor. We got some food to accompany our drinks seeing as how we'd spent an hour waiting for Washington Monument tickets in the drizzle. My bagel with cream cheese was good but E's ham and cheese panini was awesome. We spent a leisurely morning sitting at the counter, looking out at the street and people-watching. A perfect way to spend a good chunk of time in a very un-touristy way! If I'm in the area again, I will surely be back. read more

First time coming here and I liked it. It's near a lot of good stuff: the White House, the Corcoran etc. Very well priced compared to $tarbuck$ (don't get me wrong, I like a frappuccino but M.E. Swing is where you go for real coffee). I had a cafe au lait and it was very well done. Great balance of coffee and milk. A packet of brown sugar and I was on my way to nirvana. The nut brownie (I'm pretty sure they were walnuts) was also good although a bit too rich for my tastes. My friend got a hot chocolate and she really liked it. Unfortunately my coffee experience was ended prematurely when she accidentally knocked it out of my hands and onto the ground, but I'm quick to forgive. Just means I'll have to get two servings of coffee next time to make up for it! read more

Good quality, great prices great location. There are a number of reasons you should come here. If you're a tourist, it's conveniently located near the mall and only about a block from the White House. If you work in the area, first of all, that sucks, but they run a pretty tight ship and can get you in and out. And just ignore all the big black SUVs and men in suits with earpieces hanging around outside. The coffee is pretty good. Definitely above average, not quite Seattle-level, but still up there. I ordered a cap and was honestly a bit impressed. Their beans appear to be dark-roasted (usually a no-no for serious coffee people) but the taste came out mellow and subdued without the bitter bite that darks normally produce. While the pull appeared sloppy (the barista looked like he was rushing and didn't pack it clean), they produced a very smooth, consistent cup. The foam was creamy and not too airy, and a little art would have been nice but I guess you can't have everything. I was there at around 2 PM and there was a constant line of at least five people for the duration of my stay. That being said, they are quick and keep people moving. Lots of people who look powerful coming through too. And bodyguards. It was fun. read more

I don't drink coffee and even I love this place. They offer muffins, bagels, yogurt, etc. I get the chai tea all the time which is the best I have ever had. My coworkers constantly get coffee from here because of the consistent brews and awesome taste (according to them). The line moves fast and the service is great. read more

Holy heck. I have found my new coffee heaven. That was the best soy latte I have ever had. It was also a double that cost less than a Starbucks single. I also love the old-fashioned decor -- think 1950s train station -- and the fact that it is locally owned and ground. Add to it being down the street from where I'm doing my graduate internship, and I will most definitely be back. The one downside: loooong line, especially in the 8-10am rush. I love their cappuccinos (two shots of espresso!), but that isn't what's inspiring this review. The baked goods are so fabulous. I've had scones and muffins, and both are delicious. If you go in and see anything with chocolate, raspberry, or lemon, do yourself a favor and get it. I'm currently munching on a triple-chocolate muffin and it is absolute heaven. It's crowded before work, 11am, and 2-3 pm. Otherwise the line is fairly short, and I've never had a problem getting a seat as most people get their drinks to go. I have been disappointed by the chai tea, but every coffee drink I've ordered is spot on delicious. My coworker orders wet macchiatos and says they are the best in the city. read more

This is probably my favorite DC coffee shop. They have a by the lb buyers card, and have a good selection of beans. The line is quite long in the AM and again in mid afternoon but it moves extremely quickly. My only complaint is that their cappucino is mostly milk, not enough foam to be a true cappucino, so I ask for it dry. Espresso is very good quality, and I enjoy their brewed coffee as well. Please don't order using Starbucks sizes, you'll be corrected, it's single, double, triple. read more

This place rocks my socks off. I am frequently overwhelmed by the bajillions of coffee choices offered by "other coffee places", and when the barista asks what I want, I tend to flounder and order something totally different that what I came in wanting. Swing does not give me the same anxiety, and for that I am a happy customer. Their menu is short and sweet -- 8-10 choices of hot/cold coffees and teas, and a display full of yummy, fresh baked goodies (brownies, danishes, croissants, etc). This is the kind of place you 'swing' into (excuse my pun) and grab something to go. There are only a few high-top seats, and there is no wifi. However, this fits the bill for me as my coffee runs are usually with coworkers before a morning check-in call. Also prices are good - I got a 12oz coffee and a deeeelish cheese danish for $5. I ordered the vanilla iced latte and my lady was find enough to listen to me when I said less sweet. Definitely one of the tastiest vanilla lattes I have had. I love Swings! I buy in bulk High Mountain, and give it as gifts to family and friends all over the country -- it is my mother-in-laws favorite coffee (and she doesn't share it with others, seriously). For the decaf-loving, Decaf Colombian is great -- my mother's favorite. I love their Chai -- hot or iced (but if you get it iced, ask for light ice, as they can go over-the-top with it). It's real smooth. I wish this independent shop had other locations in DC -- but for now I work close-by and have no complaints. You can order their coffee online too. read more

Stopped here to get a quick cup of coffee in the late afternoon. It wasn't too crowded, but the service was very fast, the workers extremely friendly, and the coffee pretty good. The coffee is reasonably priced and they have a few different options. They don't do pour-over only drip but regardless, still a pretty solid cup. read more

Being here is like being in a 1940's time warp given the period (original) decor. If you are reading this owners, never mess with it and modernize! Location is super close to the White House and the Corcoran Gallery and OAS. They had a nice selection of coffees from all over the world, for sale by the pound or cup, and also the usual pastries (which weren't awesome) but you can't have everything. Staff were friendly and helpful. The hours are a little weird, and I think you have to come here on weekdays only. It's a nice stop after the Bike to Work Day each May. read more

Very close to the White House in Foggy Bottom area. My only complaint is that there isn't much seating- more of a place if you want to pick up a coffee and go. I really wish DC had more cafe/coffee areas for people to sit and study/do work. Their seats are also primarily high chairs, and against the window seating. Fantastic coffee. This place helped me fall in love with coffee after not drinking it for most of my life. I go during the week and regularly buy beans from there as well. Few other places in the DC area I've tried quite hit the spot like this place. And it beats any chain, that is for sure. I only drink coffee personally, but my coworkers rave about the other coffee bean based drinks available here. It's not cheap, but really no different than any other coffee place in that area (2 blocks from White House). The store has been there for almost 100 years, and even though it was recently renovated it kept most of its original look/feel. I had a better experience at Peregrine but for reasons outside the sole taste of coffee. Best coffee in DC! I love me some good coffee and this is where it's at. Grabbed one almost daily on my commute to work until I noticed no one else on the Metro was drinking anything.... and then noticed the no drinks policy. That was a sad day. The waiting area is a bit chaotic during peak areas, just keep track of the 1 or 2 people in front of you so you know when your drink is coming up. They could benefit from writing your name on the cup like they do at Starbucks so you know which order belongs to whom. Had some guy try to steal my morning Americano... a dangerous move as I forget all my gentlemanly Canadian graces before that first cup. Needless to say I gave the man a firm tap on the shoulder and a stiff "Sorry" followed by "I think that's my order" - about as angry as Canadians get. read more

This place is a true coffee shop - you can tell it's been around forever and the place is almost always packed (unless you show up around 1pm). The lines can be long, but the service is fast. You'll have your coffee in hand shortly after paying the cashier. I have had the basic brewed coffee and it's delicious - fresh with great flavor. Next on my list is the espresso. While seating is limited, I've always managed to find a stool or at least a ledge to rest my hot cup of coffee on. I love the staff and find I go a bit out of my way for their elixir. I drink decaf at home and find their water decaffinated colombian exceptional in my cheapo french press. M E Swing is a DC institution; one of the few DC-based roasters, and a must-go for coffee lovers and those who appreciate supporting local roasters. I have been getting bulk coffee there for the last couple months and have been impressed by their blends and single origin coffees alike. It's been really busy every time I've been in there and does not seem like the kind of place you can post up with a laptop for hours, but it's a great place to stop in for a cup to go, or to replenish your stash to brew at home! The coffee is delicious. I like that they roast the beans in-house (Alexandria) and that the roasts are very good. I got a pour over coffee, first time, and Tudor was excellent in explaining the process and reasoning behind the brew and how it differs from other methods. Just completed a move from Seattle to DC, and I am still on the search for an amazing cup of coffee (an americano to be exact). I have been spoiled by the riches of Cafe Vida, Lighthouse, Stumptown, and Vivace, along with the dozens of other independent amazing coffee options. M.E. Swing is pretty good, just slightly short of great. Though I got my americano iced, which is a tough way to judge flavor. Since I will be working just around the corner, I know that I will be frequenting M.E. Swing, and can appreciate that the baristas there probably know a good deal more about the coffee they are serving than you would expect in a chain. Everyone raves about the cups, and they are a step up from plastic, but they should also have separate trash containers for compostables, as these kinds of cups make the most sense when they can be put into an industrial composter rather than mixed with regular trash. read more
