The Capitol Region of the National Collegiate Club Golf Association hosted our first Spring Regional Tournament here over the weekend of February 23-24 2013. Head Pro Gray Thouron and his staff went above and beyond in accommodating everything I requested, from dividing the driving range for each school, to helping take photos, to bringing in extra staff to help cook some food and man the pro shop for us. As far as the course itself, I could tell that it must be a phenomenal track during the summer months. There was a great variety of holes, and although the scorecard yardage is only 6,300 yards, the course plays much longer than that. Given that it was late February, much of the grass was dead and there were some rough and uneven patches on the tee boxes, in the fairways and around the greens. For the most part, the greens were in excellent shape with a couple small exceptions. The bunkers were very recently renovated and in excellent condition. The $40 per day price tag including range balls and cart fees was very reasonable. All in all, I will recommend the NCCGA Capitol Region utilizes this course again in the future, perhaps later in the season so the course has time to get in slightly better shape. The NCCGA is the governing body for collegiate club golf teams across the country, with regions ranging from New England to Texas to California to the deep south. I took my dad here for Father's Day, expecting a great round, but instead, we got five hours of pure frustration. The course management was completely nonexistent. We were forced to wait on the group ahead of us at every single one of the 18 holes. There was a massive logjam on the entire course, yet the Ranger/Marshal decided to make us their target. The Marshal came up to lecture us about our pace three separate times. Where exactly did he expect us to go? We couldn't hit our balls because the group in front of us was literally still standing on the fairway or green. Getting rushed and harassed when you physically have nowhere to go completely ruins the rhythm of your game and makes for a miserable experience. If a course is going to overbook and stack tee times on a major holiday, they need to manage the bottleneck from the front, not bully the groups in the back who are already stuck waiting. Incredibly unprofessional. We won't be back. read more

We decided to celebrate Father's Day as a family at Sycamore Creek Golf Course, but unfortunately, the experience was incredibly frustrating from start to finish. The course was severely overbooked, leading to major backups at almost every hole. We spent a significant amount of time sitting around waiting for the groups ahead of us to tee off. Despite the clear bottleneck on the course--which was entirely out of our control--the staff repeatedly rushed us to speed up our play. I want to make it clear that we expected to have to wait, and had no problem with it because we wanted everyone to enjoy their day as we expected to be able to do the same. Unfortunately, the staff was unprofessional and confrontational when handling the situation, showing zero awareness that the delay was caused by their own overbooking. It completely ruined what was supposed to be a relaxing holiday outing with family. Between the terrible pace of play and the rude treatment from management, we will not be returning. read more

i brought my father in law here yesterday for father's day, we waited past our tee times to finally start because we were waiting for the people in front of us. our second time even being able to hit, after the very first drive, we had an older guy that worked there come up to us that said we needed to split up as a family because we were taking too long. we had barely been playing for 10 minutes, told us to "come on, move along". it ruined the father's day experience for my father in law and his kids right off the bat. we finally get to hit the ball at hole 2, after waiting for the people in front of us for 15-20 minutes the marshall comes up to us, hole 6 the marshall comes up again. we had waited at every 18 holes for people in front of us, which we had absolutely no issue with waiting on the people in front of us. we had become friends with these people during the process. it was the people working there who had some type of issue with waiting. it was father's day and we knew the golf course would be busy. i would never recommend coming here, they seem to overbook tee times and then rush people through the course. we paid extra as well to be able to do this on father's day and booked our tee times in advanced. the staff made this experience horrible for us. we have time stamps for every hole we had to wait at before we finally got to go. read more

Ah, Sycamore Creek: A welcoming and completely NOT racist golf course! I have played this golf course at least 15 times, and when I am playing with a white man I have never been bothered about the pace of play! As I said, this is a welcoming and completely NOT racist golf course! This is the 2nd time I have brought my former pastor (who happens to be an older black gentleman), and surprise, surprise, the 2nd time an old white man harassed us about pace of play. But remember, this is a welcoming and completely NOT racist golf course! Both times, this Barney fife wannabe has harassed us about pace of play despite our being within the expected norms of finish time. This time, he actually drove onto the course, and stopped us from playing TWICE, on two separate holes, to tell us to "pick it up." But Sycamore Creek is a welcoming and completely NOT racist golf course! Based upon every golf website I have ever seen, 18 holes should take 4-4 1/2 hours. This follows that 9 holes should take 2-2:15. Even with him harassing us twice, and being paired with a walking player that we did not know, we finished our 9 holes in 2 hours & 16 minutes (9:04-11:21). But remember, this is a welcoming and completely NOT racist golf course! We allowed one group to play through, and still finished within that time. That group was 2 white men who were not paired up with someone they didn't know. But remember, this is a welcoming and completely NOT racist golf course! The second group that was behind us was two older white gentlemen, each riding in THEIR OWN golf cart. They were also not matched up with anyone that they didn't know. But remember, this is a welcoming and completely NOT racist golf course! We went into the golf shop to complain about our treatment. The guy behind the counter AGREED that we should not have been harassed, and that we were not slow, because we finished within a reasonable amount of time. So, at least there's that! He admitted that we were treated wrongly! Because, please remember, this is a welcoming and completely NOT racist golf course! Instead of owning it (despite admitting it) that we were provided a very poor experience because of staff and refunded, or at partially refunded, we got the proverbial "I'll talk to him." Which is "customer service" language for "I'm not going to do anything. Just shut up & leave." But remember, this is a welcoming and completely NOT racist golf course! read more

Played in golf cart that had torn seat cushions, bent wheel axel, and tires as bald as slicks. On 3 occasions almost lost control on cart path that was damp from early morning rain. Liability on them if someone gets injured. Read another review they supposedly have golf carts on back order for 1.5 years. Advice, change the dang tires then before somebody gets hurt!!! The course layout and condition is average at best, yet they charge $60! Won't visit again. read more

Stay Away!! -This course is famous for over booking T-Times. Back up on every hole during the busy season. -The golf carts could explode at any moment. Horrible condition. -The interior of the check in area(Club House) is in dire need of new carpet, paint, etc... Smells like mildew. -They will not offer Rain checks if there is Rain on the Radar...WTF!! Thats when you give out rain checks. -This place is nothing like it was. -OVERPRICED for what your playing!!! read more

There was a comment in a recent review calling the owners tight asses because the golf carts are in bad shape. They know that and golf cars have been on order for a year and half. Due to shortage of lime everything they have not been able to get new carts. They are suppose to be here in October, fingers crossed. This golf course has been in business for 32 years and has been a good well maintained and friendly course. Sycamore Creek cares about their customers and hope you understand the supply issues. Voting this top 3 dogtracks in Richmond. Poor shape. Golf carts are ancient and barely functional, mine looked like a dog had chewed the seat cover off. 5 minutes in between tee-times. By the time we got the number 3there was five groups on one hole. Greens were in actually pretty good shape except for they leave two holes open on each green and just move the flag every day instead of plugging the whole they're not using. Also left my rangefinder on the cart and the cart guys just decided to keep it. I told my buddy I didn't want to play there to begin with, and he convinced me and now I know I'll never have to go back. read more

The course is in very good condition and always a challenge to play, especially when it's 90 degrees, however, the owners here are NOT investing in some very basic things that are long over due. I'll start with the carts. There should be some serious efforts to replace these junkers and demonstrate to the patrons that we care about our golf customers. But I'm sure, as true capitalists, that thought has never crossed their minds. But I'll tell you owners, it crosses your customers !! At the very least, REPAIR THE SEATS but not with duct tape! Makes the place look like a slum clearance project. Next on my bitch list is the cart paths. I see some repairs are in the works but It's penny foolish to not pave them all the way rather than this patch work that makes one think, how stupid can these people be to not do the job completely ?? My advice, stop the tight wad approach to maintaining your investment ! Every time I bounce and are jolted around on the cart paths I have to visit a chiropractor to be functional again. The course itself was just fine and well maintained. We booked a tee time for 5 players. Nothing was brought to our attention about having too many players. Obviously with a larger group we're gonna play slower. We had no issues letting folks play through. No one seemed upset about our pace. As we were finishing the front nine, the illustrious marshal Pete, decided to ride on in mounted upon his high horse to read us the riot act about our play speed. When we kindly explained that we'd been allowing the faster folks to play through. Pete continued to berate us and be disrespectful and insist that we speed up and continued to trash talk our group saying that we ought to know better and have groups of either 2,3 or 4. Ultimately the issue here is two fold. If group size is that much of an issue, the starter should have split us up to begin with. But the marshal added insult to injury. Pete's final issue was driving straight at our cart on the wrong side of the road and being indignant, waving me out of his path. I guess it's just Pete's world and we're merely living in it. As visitors to the area, and being recommended to play this course, we looked forward to getting a round in. After the ignorance we received, I can say I'm sorry we played here and I won't be recommending this course to anyone, unless they want to be treated like second class citizens. News flash Pete, this ain't Augusta. read more

So Sycamore, who basically lost their greens last summer, has jacked up their rates, moved back their twilight deal and no longer sells deals that they had last year. I guess they are trying to capitalize on Belmont closing and other courses struggling, but $60 to play there simply not worth it, and they aerated the greens this week and offered ZERO discounts. read more

Really good public course. Grounds have improved tremendously over the years, I've been told. Very well maintained! Staff is friendly & it's usually pretty easy to get a weekend tee time if you call several days in advance. read more

Not sure where P.H played, but was there this weekend and none of the symptoms he exhibited were there. I'm 18 handicap, but found the course in good shape and a good challenge. Greens were clean, and putted much the same as putting green. (as desired). Staff friendly. Hamburgers are very good (done on char grill outside - bratts are very meh: no flavor/spices in them and no saurkraut to aid them. Stick with the burger and the fresh tomato from neighbooring farm. For $53 bucks, good deal/fast round (2 groups in front bailed and it was nobody behind.) read more

Group of four played this past Sunday. I must say that the golf pro was very rude. Told us we were playing too slow, and needed to step it up on the back 9. They were not busy at all, and were letting twosomes play. We had no problem letting them play through, but golf pro apparently decided to have " Barney fife" watch us play. It's the last time we drop our hard earned money at this course. Our 300+ dollars will be spent elsewhere. read more

Not a very challenging course but it's consistently in good condition and a good value. Never have much trouble getting a tee time.

I almost don't want to add a review because I feel like this is my secret course. I have played it for the past year and a half, and it it has been in great shape. The greens are so soft you can plug a ball half way, but some how they are not slow. They have some good speed to them. I love how secluded the corse is, yet close to the west end. Only once did I have to end a round early because others were too slow. (3 groups waiting to tee off on 16). The course is challenging, yet good for those with control issues. Greens always in good shape. This is my top choice for a public course in rva, great value! Staff has always been very nice, no issues at all read more

A small and fun golf course at quite a reasonable price. The course is in good shape all year long. The front and back nine are like two totally different nine hole courses. The only flaw is their slow greens. Otherwise pound for pound one of the be st public courses in Richmond. read more
