We have three large breed dogs that are our fur babies. We've lived in multiple states and every time we move we always try to find the best vets for our dogs. We've found some really great ones and some also not so great. I will have to say that I am incredibly pleased with the care and affection that the SVH team provides our family. The front staff are always pleasant to speak with in person and via phone. They always return my calls or try to answer any questions I may have. They can get busy at times but make the effort to fit you where possible/and as needed. The doctors that I've met so far are great in the sense that they don't try to upsell you on products/services or make you feel like a bad owner if you decide not to utilize their recommendations. One of our dogs has severe allergies and we've had him tested and found out the results, we've had other vets try to guilt us into trying to push their testing services or preferred drugs which typical wouldn't work because our dog has two types of allergies that can't be eliminated due to the other dogs in the house transferring their allergens to him. SVH never tried to force us into their testing services or make us feel bad in anyway. They always try to provide solutions as an option if we wanted addition insight on things. They are reasonably priced (compared to what we've paid at other vets). They have a beautiful new facility that is very spacious, especially when we bring our three large dogs at one time which is great. Their staff and technicians always go above and beyond to love on our pups. Overall, this is a great group of people. It makes me happy to find a place of business that does what it's supposed to do and treat people with courtesy. I wished I snapped a photo but the little details they do are above and beyond, like having a cute little sign welcoming Lucky and Harley to their appointment. It's hard to express how much I value Sycamore Veterinary Hospital. We first started here for elder care for our 13 year old Aussie doodle. I was immediately aware of how happy the staff seemed. Dr. Veitch answered every question I could think of. He sat down on the floor with our dog and loved on him while we spoke. He never looked at the clock or made me feel rushed. Every vet tech we worked with was so compassionate and kind. Now we take our new puppy here and she has experienced the same level of doting care. We brought her in for her spay procedure and I have no doubt that behind the scenes they are living in her and making her feel safe and loved. Dr. Murphy and the vet tech made time to answer ALL my questions and they couldn't have made it any easier to feel comfortable putting our pup in their hands. I've used 4 vet offices in the area over the last 16 years and Sycamore blows them all all away. We recently moved to Midlothian and received lots of recommendations to go to Sycamore Veterinary Hospital. So glad we took the advice of our many neighbors who come here! Both our dog and cat are seen here, and we could not be more pleased. Honestly, there may be cheaper places to go, but when it comes to our pets, we want to make sure they get the very best care...just like we would for our two-legged kids. I planned to call around for pricing for a pre op visit for my lil guy. This was the first and only place I ended up calling! The coordinator I spoke with was able to give me estimates for not only the visit but for anticipated labs as well. I appreciated their transparency so much I decided to get on the schedule ASAP! We were able to make an appointment for a few days later so now I just had to have long deep talks with doggo about how he needed to be on his best behavior when we go to the vet. Cut to the appointment and my "fierce" GSD is barking his head off from the car at a dog in the parking lot. I had a feeling my talks didn't get through to him. I decided to leave him to... guard? the car while I go grab the paperwork. The girls working were super helpful and advised we could wait outside until he was ready to be taken back. We were able to skip the lobby altogether and go through a side door to the exam room. We were seen about 30 minutes after his appointment time but they did pop in to let us know they were running behind which was nice of them. Dr. Russell was professional, helpful and seemed to really care about my pup! We were able to check out in the exam room and the prices were consistent with what I was quoted over the phone. We got a call with lab results and had a copy emailed to us the next day. I plan to continue care here and recommend it to anyone looking for a vet! read more

Conveniently located and nice facilities, but the organization and customer service leave a lot to be desired. We have been taking our dog here since 2017, but I think we'll look for a new vet. I dropped off a urine sample for my dog. The staff member took my phone number down on her hand. After two days of not hearing back with urinalysis results, I called and learned that the results had been available for a while. They had called the wrong number because the staff member wrote it down incorrectly on her hand. When I asked why they didn't look in our patient records to double check the number, or try the secondary number, they had no answer. In the end, my dog went 3 days with an untreated UTI because Sycamore Vet staff were disorganized and did not communicate well. Not great. read more

If you live on the southside, this is a great vet. My niece, Karen, takes her kitties Koda and Misty here and loves the friendliness of the staff and the great care the vets give her two furry friends. One of the best things about this clinic are that they offer evening hours two days a week. For folks who work a 9 to 5 job, being able to take their pets in up until 7 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays is really convenient, and you don't have to fight the Saturday morning crowds. read more

We have been using Sycamore since we located in Midlothian in 1993 for our fur babies, all cats until 2012, when we got our first pup.....we have always gotten wonderful treatment, prompt, and compassionate when necessary, and with that length of time, you know that has been necessary. All of the folks are wonderful, but I must say that Dr. Murphy deserves a crown of roses for everything she says and does. we just lost our beloved Zoey in June due to a fast illness and with the new facility it was a less painful scenario if that was possible. UPDATE: Spoke with owner Taryn who acknowledged that there was infact some record that I had made an appointment with, apologized for the system error on their part, the series of unfortunate events and did not charge me for the appointments which I appreciate. I have updated my review to remove any staff names and change stars, as I hope the way that customers are treated by their staff is remedied a bit after this situation and it can be a learning curve. Called them on 8/3/20 to set up an appointment for a last set of booster shots for my kittens I had just adopted. The reason I chose them, is because it is where they had received all their previous vaccines while in the care of a humane society (which I confirmed with them when I called on 8/3 to make the appointment). They are 30 minutes from my place of residence and certainly would not have been my first choice otherwise. Upon arrival at my scheduled appointment today, I called as instructed and let them know I was there (COVID guidelines). The receptionist tells me that they don't have an appointment for my cats in the system and that they have no record of my cats having ever been there. I explained to her what humane society my cats came from, how I had never heard of this vet office before, and that I wouldn't have called them to make the appointment if this wasn't the vet my cats were on record at. She runs their information again and once more tells me that there is no appointment for them, nor are they in the Sycamore system as having been patients there. She then continued to tell me that I am making up the appointment in my head and that it must have been some other vet office that I spoke to. Naturally, I'm upset after just having to pack up 2 cats and drive them 30 mins to find out that the vet office did not make record of the appointment they set for me. I told the receptionist that it's wild they don't have record of my cats or this appointment, as a week and half earlier they did. I inform her that I have record of the call that I placed to them on 8/3 for verification - since she keeps trying to convince me that it must have been some other vet office that I called. Despite this, she continues to insist that I've never spoken to anyone at Sycamore and that my cats have never been there. After some frustration, she finally asks what kind of appointment it is and says she will send out a vet tech to get the cats in a few minutes (she must have realized she was wrong but didn't want to admit it. I can't see them treating a cat without proper information on said cats.). A vet tech comes out to the car. I can already tell by her body language that she has an attitude. I show her my phone log indicating that I had indeed spoken to them on 8/3 to schedule the appointment, so that she can pass this information along since I'm unable to go inside due to COVID. I ask her for the name of the woman I had just spoken to. She tells me "not cool the way you spoke to her by the way". I'm like what are you talking about? It's 'not cool' the receptionist continually tried to tell me that I never spoke to them on 8/3 and that my cats weren't on record with them. The vet tech told me that I was "dropping f-bombs" while on the phone with the recptionist. Girl....what? No one cussed at that lady. I asked the vet tech if she heard the conversation, or if that's just what the receptionist told her. She was silent. I told her that it's wildly unprofessional to make accusations about what I said during a conversation she never even heard. The vet tech rudely told me that she was sent out to "run interference". "Run interference" doesn't mean to start off with an attitude, accuse me of things I didn't do, and exacerbate a situation. I called back I point blank ask the receptionist "why did you lie and tell the vet tech that I was cussing at you? That's super unprofessional of you." She tells me she's not answering any questions and hangs up on me. So, I call back, and talk to a more level-headed, professional receptionist who able to pull up my cats in the system with no problem and confirms that they've been receiving service at Sycamore since May. She somewhat apologizes (I guess) for the other rexeptionists inability to do this simple task. read more

I have been taking my precious fur babies to Dr. Alyssa Thompson for 15 years. Each of my 3 Pomeranians had serious health issues. With Dr. Thompson's expertise and love for my dogs, each dog lived a life years beyond his/her fatal diagnosis. Years were gained through medicinal treatment, herbal treatment, and acupuncture, and these years were lived comfortably and happily. When each beloved Pommie no longer had a good quality of life, Dr. Thompson wept with me as I said goodbye. Prices are very reasonable and no unnecessary tests are performed. read more

Dr. Murphy is so sweet to her, and truly cares that we take care of everything that we need to! They also use a new app to communicate which has been helpful-when our girl had her teeth cleaning procedure, they could send us updates and pictures while she was there without us. I took my two mixed breed dogs here for a checkup. All persons encountered were polite and helpful however. While going through the checkup I was pushed several products including medicated eye drops for a build up near my dogs eye. It was 8 am and he has just woken up. Didn't see any build up for 2 weeks after because it was just "sand" in his eye. While examine my second dog, the doctor asked for stool samples which we were not told to bring. She happily said "no problem" and got it herself. Only problem is that it was taking everything in me to restrain my dog who wanted to bite her hand off. I asked her to stop and she said it will be fine. It was fine...barely. I lost control of him at the last second as she luckily already pulled away. I'd like to think of both of those as rare occurrences but either way I will not be back. read more

Recently switched to Sycamore as my old dog's health was failing and was faced with the difficult decision all pet owners eventually have to make. I can't say enough good about how caring their staff and Vets are. They gave us a lot of time to say goodbye and get our dog in a comfortable place. Their bedside manner and advice made it clear that although a tough decision we were making the best decision for our dog. Then I received a hand-written note from the two vets that helped my old dog in his final days. An update to my previous review. I have changed Vets. I actually love all of the Vets that I have encountered at Sycamore, but still cannot get beyond the fact that a majority of the staff I encounter when checking in and out behave as if they do not want to be bothered and they act as if they are very unhappy to be there. That may seem like a minor issue, but dealing with people with this attitude is draining. This happens even when you call to ask a question or make an appointment. I have called a few times where I have been put on hold and my call has been dropped. My recommendation would be to cheer up and at least try to appears as if you enjoy what you are doing. read more

I have lived in the Richmond area almost my entire life. Over the years we have been to many vet practices. I can say without a doubt this is an exceptional practice. My dogs have seen everyone of the vets there and they have all been wonderful. The vet techs are great and very skilled and the front desk ladies are so friendly and downright fun. Dr. Martin diagnosed my golden's cancer and her estimate lifespan to the day. She and a wonderful tech came to my house to euthanize Mollie and were beyond caring and compassionate. However, since the hospital was bought by one of the technicians a few years ago the place has changed and not for the better. The atmosphere is different,not as friendly. My family started taking our pets there when I was a teenager so I was very sad to have to make the decision to go elsewhere but after the treatment I received I was not going to give them another cent. read more

Extremely dissatisfied at service! I understand we were roughly 10 minutes late for an appointment but as I called and mention I was pulling up with our dog and with our family as school was out. We were turned away. Seeing my visible frustration staff did absolutely nothing to try to offer assistance. Claiming they were booked. The office was empty! The parking lot was empty. Had I seen animals surrounding the wait room sure I'd believe that. But that wasn't the case. I even spent an additional 30 mins to write this review in their parking lot and yet again, no clients came in. An exception could have been made especially for a first time client. Will never return and I do not recommend... We waited an entire week for this appt only to have to wait yet again over "10 mins". Ridiculous. No complaints about the vets themselves, all very nice and caring. A few policies have annoyed me over the past couple years though, and moving elsewhere. They won't provide prescriptions to buy heartworm medicine online, they want you to use their service that is significantly more expensive, the wait times to get in have usually been well over an hour, and they try to always make some extra money by forcing a full check up for every vaccination, even if you have just been there. read more

I love the vets at Sycamore! They are always very welcoming and willing to answer any question. I found a cut on one of my dogs very early on a Monday morning. I had to be at work at 8:00. I called their emergency number and was able to get her in before their open hours. The only reason I give them 4/5 stars is that they can be very difficult when you are trying to get a prescription for medication from an outside (much cheaper) vendor. Other than that I have nothing bad to say. They take wonderful care of my two fur babies! read more

Sycamore Vets took care of our 15 week old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppy that we had just picked up in North Carolina two days prior to our visit. He had developed tapeworms. When I called I was informed that I would have to leave him for the day, as a work-in. Left him around 8:30 and a vet, not a staff member but an actual vet, called me at 1:00 pm to discuss his condition and future care with me. I picked him up at 2pm. This veterinary office had been recommended to me as we were new to the area. I am so glad that I heeded the recommendation! The staff are very friendly and the vet, Dr. O'Brien, is wonderful. We have loved Sycamore Vet since we moved to Midlothian. They have taken care of our Cairn Terrier so well, and now we have another Cairn puppy we're bringing to them. Most importantly, when my daughter's Shih Tzu had cancer and it was inoperable, we took her there and they have the most wonderful environment for saying goodbye to your beloved pet. They have a comfortable, dedicated room with a separate entrance and give you time to be with your pet before and after. You don't have to go out through the lobby when you have tears on your face. It's not a fun topic, but having lost 2 other pets, this experience was soothing and made us feel like we took good care of our girl until the inevitable end. They were also honest and up front about the condition of the dog, and did not hold out false hope or put her through more pain because given the location and size of the tumor it would do no good to undergo expensive surgery. I give them high marks for ethics, honesty and compassion as well as medical treatment. read more
