Urban farming...who knew??…read more I sure as hell didn't! My first experience, and hopefully not my last, was while volunteering at the Autumn Equinox Celebration a few weekends ago. I generally associate Hurley avenue with The Kitchen, the street to the mall, the movie theaters, a bunch of random big box stores/shops...not where I'd find a hidden oasis of urban farming! I can't really review the farming situation, because what I saw was a decked out landscape of food tasting, booze drinking, social responsible being group of people who were supporting an underground culture of urban farming. A friend asked if I'd like to volunteer at this event. Sure, I don't mind donating my services to a good cause. This BY FAR is the most underrated event in Sacramento. I almost don't want to yelp about it, so it stays cool and awesome - but they do cap it off, so get in where you fit in. Every good eatery on the grid and in the Handle district is here. Even some of the good spots off of the grid were here too. There was plenty of food for everyone and booze, no short supply of anything. Unlike most events, IF you even had to wait in a line, it was less than five minutes. The whole event was also "no waste"! For those of you who don't speak hippie, this means no trash was created - we used mini wine glasses, plastic plates, and silverware. The vendors generally just plated everything on your plate, with the exception of a few vendors. Those that did use a serving dish, were made of bamboo or something hippieish of the sorts. After volunteering and consuming their food and booze (this was okayed by the volunteer lead), I realized that I want to volunteer at their actual farm in Rancho Cordova. This event made me want to volunteer my time to their efforts, it is a great non-profit. Everyone was so warm and inviting, and genuinely nice - from the staffers, the other volunteers, the vendors, and the celebrators, not one person had a bad attitude. I am now a believer...I'm ready to get down on some urban farming!

This takes me to the city of Folsom where I stumbled across "Hinkle Creek Nature Area", a place I had not even heard about until making an actual visit. Located in a residential part of Folsom alongside Baldwin Dam Rd., this park/nature preserve is closest to Oak Ave and Folsom-Auburn Rd while being just west of the American River. I came here with my lady during the afternoon of Sunday 2/1/2026 at around 1:00pm. Much to my surprise, parking was free and easily accessible. What I particularly liked about this nature area was that you may enter through either a paved or unpaved trail as the entire walk stretches in just under a mile. And much to my surprise, the 36-acres that accommodates this park actually made me feel as if I was more in the open air wilderness. Since we came during a comfortable day, we witnessed a ton of fresh green grass and the absence of leaves on many of the trees. During my walk, The overall nature area is the perfect spot for relaxed, leisurely walks that even the most non-skilled person can do while it is stroller and pet friendly. I also wanted to add that the trail can also be used for mountain biking and even horseback riding even though we did not witness that on our walk. I also encourage everyone to pay a visit to the actual Hinkle Creek Nature Center that offers useful information and educational programs to children. All in all, this is an excellent and well-maintained nature center that caters to all walks of life. My rating, a unanimous five stars.

The one-mile loop, partially paved and all easily marked, truly makes you feel that you aren't in the middle of a neighborhood. For the most part, it's quiet, and serene -- even when homes are nearby. The only real noise is when you walk beside a road for a few 100 feet.The small creek and pond provide a beautiful setting to walk by or sit and relax. Dog are allowed, but keep in mind that if your dog is a barker or not totally canine-friendly, there are few places to let others pass when you are on the unpaved portion of the trail. Go in the spring time when the grass is green and lush. This is a gem of a find.

One area is for dogs learning to socialize and integrating them into the park. The second area is for small dogs and third area is for large dogs. There is plenty of parking most nights except when they have three soccer games going at the same time other wise parking is great. Huei's Garden is a beautiful and peaceful oasis. Huei herself is a gem. She works very hard to…read moremaintain the garden so that people can come and enjoy it. She puts on several tours per year (June for Rotary, October for Breast Cancer, and April for Shriners Children's Hospital). She is always happy to host volunteers who would like to partake in garden work. Volunteers can report to Huei's garden Sundays 10-12. She will guide and offer great insight into gardening. What made the experience worse was that Dave Wilkerson, Director of ACAI Studios & Gallery, personally doubled down on the decision despite the circumstances. A policy is one thing, but compassion and basic humanity should still matter. Being treated this rigidly during a family loss was honestly upsetting and disappointing. I would not recommend supporting an organization that responds this way to someone dealing with a bereavement emergency. Would you want to be treated this way after losing a family member?

Took a throwing class with Terry, who was great. He was super informative and willing to help…read morethroughout all my four classes. I ended up making about 5 pieces throughout the four classes. We glazed during our fourth and final class, meaning we had to return to find our pieces. When I came back the fifth week, my pieces were still not fired in the kiln yet. So I decided to come back in two weeks. That's where I ran into my issue. All of our completed pieces are in a separate room where the glazing happens. There was another instructor, bald lady who I believe instructs the hand throwing class, who was teaching her class how to glaze. My friend and I were looking for our pieces, trying to be as quiet as possible. However, noise is going to be made as we're rummaging through a bunch of finished pieces. There are about four separate sections where our pieces could be, so as we were going through the finished pottery pieces, someone from her class asked my friend and I to be quiet, which we were already trying to be as quiet as possible. She said that we were being rude and disruptive. However, this is just the nature of this room. People are going to be going in and out, trying to find their pieces, as they only place the finalized pieces here. This is when I expected the bald instructor to speak up but she was super rude as well. She was demeaning and condescending towards us. She talked down to us as if my friend and I were 5 years old. When we were looking through the non fired pieces, she raised her voice telling us not to touch the pieces if they weren't ours. The issue is, when you paint the glaze, not only does your piece look completely different, but the glaze is all different types of crazy colors. The only way to verify if the piece is yours is if you find your name on the bottom of the piece. So not only were we not able to verify if those pieces were ours, as the instructor was giving us attitude, we weren't able to find all of our pieces. We went back to our instructor, who was kind enough to find our pieces for us. Overall, we had a good experience but that last instructor really rubbed me the wrong way. I'm conflicted on what score to give, and really feel as though how are you an instructor when you are so rude? For sure left a bad taste in my mouth.

This is my second year as a member for GFWC Citrus Heights Women's Club. This year I was elected…read morethe 1st VP. I love this group of women. Each member brings different skills and life paths to our organization. We do a number of community services such as clothing swaps, international outreach, as well as raising funds for local families. Our annual chili cook off and car show is going on its 6th year. This event allows us to raise money to buy Christmas presents and food for children who are in domestic violence programs. In addition, we support our local vets and law enforcement. We are more than a volunteer organization, we are a sisterhood of women of all ages who support and empower one another.
