My mother lived with us and we were so relieved to know that we were not alone in this next journey. We (especially me) were in denial. Mom looked better some days but we still had to look at what was best for her. The nurses and aides were a constant source of information and support for us. There was always emotional support as well! For that, I am extremely thankful. There were some days that I felt I couldn't do it all and I didn't need to worry because I was never alone. When the day came to say goodbye to Mom, we were not alone. Every step of the way, our nurse led us, through the process of making final arrangements for Mom. There are many opportunities available to meet with a counselor alone or in a group. These opportunities include phone calls, texts emails or in person conversations. Resources are provided as well. I am forever grateful for the support from Northern Illinois Hospice and the many people who I have met on my grief journey so far. I recommend Northern Illinois Hospice Care for your loved ones and for those of us who are in the position of caregiving. Theresa Gregorcy, Caregiver for Carmen Cruz

It was anything but that. On day one we were told a nurse would contact us the next day. 3 days passed before anyone contacted our family. There was no clear directions provided upon admission. Our mother was only in their care for 11 days, if you can call it care, as the only contact was admission and then 3 days later and the day of passing. Then we were told someone would come pick up the bed and other equipment the next day which never happened and required us to call the day after that to ask someone to come pick it up. I understand that doesn't seem like that big of a deal however when you are going through that emotional turmoil you don't want an additional reminder of the pain you already feel. But the final straw for me was the fact that our mother had been gone for 10 days and we had been waiting to bring her ashes home yet we couldn't because the Unity doctor had not signed her death certificate. As a family who is already mourning the passing of their loved one I find it quite unempathetic of someone who is supposed to be a professional with compassion for others, especially in these circumstances. I would never in my life recommend Unity to anyone who wants their loved ones to have compassionate care at the end of their days.

Nurses bullied us into letting them take my grandfather for "a few days" because they wanted to manage his symptoms better. He was taken last night and we got a call this morning that he died. They didn't feed him. They didn't give him his medications. They didn't check his oxygen levels because they "don't usually do that" but they PROMISED THEY WOULD BECAUSE IT WOUKD MAKE US FEEL BETTER FOR HIS OXYGEN TO BE STABILIZED. They pumped him up with morphine when we specifically said we only give it to him once a day before sleep. They took him away from us to leave him in a room by himself and die.

So far, we've had to chase the nurses down to administer simple treatment like providing some moisture to her mouth-which is cracked, dry, and very painful. Mind you-not meds-but simple hospice care. They were assigned a caregiver and at first things seemed ok. However after a few visits they started sending a different caregiver each time without notifying the family of the change. The new caregiver was given NO information about the client's condition or what kind of care they needed. The company gives them nothing but the address and what time to show up. Multiple times we asked that our family be notified when there is a change of caregivers so that we could explain to my aunt and uncle and ease any fears. We were told that this was not possible. Our attempt to keep an open line of communication was met with contempt by people like Amy Roesser. She was rude, uncaring, and confrontational. It is unreasonable and cruel to continually confuse an elderly couple with dementia. Anyone familiar with this condition knows how confusing and frightening changes can be for patients. It is also shameful to care so little about the patients you serve that caregivers are given no information before their arrival. After multiple attempts to remedy this situation we have no choice but to terminate service... which means paying the time remaining on our contract.
