Last Saturday, i had to be at a wedding and needed a last minute haircut. So I went to a barber shop on Long Beach Blvd and Broadway. All i needed was a quick clean up and reshaping, just to keep what i had under control. I didn't want to go too bold and cut it all off because sometimes it takes about a week of getting used to. The 60-70 year old lady that came out to cut my hair barely spoke any English and somehow managed to completely F*** up my hair. By far the worst haircut i've ever had. So i called up Syndicate and got an appointment within 20 minutes. Being as bad as my hairline was and how uneven she cut the sides, it was pretty apparent i had to go big and take it down pretty short. At this point i didn't care. I told Javier to do what ever he had to do to fix it. When he was all finished, he said "I have good news and i have bad news...The bad news is, i know you wanted to keep your length but i had to go pretty short...But the good news is...I fixed your haircut." Needless to say i went from having the worst haircut to having the best haircut ive ever had all in the same day. Now the story doesn't end here. Not only did he save my haircut and made me look like a sharp ass gentleman for this wedding, but has since got me 3 different phone numbers, 2 dates with girls that approached me(which rarely happens), and a potential threesome thats currently under negotiation. One of them being a girl i've been interested in for a while. Every girl i know and talk to has told me i look fucking awesome. Quick & Dirty: What happened? It once was good but now I'm gone. But I found a new place called Dean Anthony. Long & Gone: I have to agree with Jeff L.'s update of this place. I sat here for 30 minutes today, on top of not getting a "Hi" someone who came in after me was helped first. What's up with that? These guys were on it at one point and there was a time when I would have waited for a haircut but not anymore. There are a few good things about sitting here for 30 minutes before I walked out... 1. I got a really good score on Block Classics Lite on my iPhone. 2. I used Yelp on my iPhone to find Dean Anthony which just happened to be down on 2nd St. (a five minute drive) 3. I found Dean Anthony down on 2nd St. and their customer service blows this place out of the water AND I got a better cut. Thanks Dean Anthony! So, sorry to say but Syndicate I think I've moved on. I dont what went wrong this time, but I'll never be back. Ive here 3 times and had my hair cut by Dylan and Tim. Both good guys who did a good job. Had the misfortune of having Miles cut my hair about a week and a half ago. Not only is he one of the most unfriendly people I've ever had the misfortune of coming across, he did a pretty lousy job.. I told him I wanted the sides no shorter than 1/2". I left looking like I was going to ship off to bootcamp with stubble on the sides and with a patch about 3" around nearly down to the skin. Went in and got a cut from Chester. I get a mid bald fade, razor lineup and beard trim. Super clean cut! Chester is careful with the clippers and the blade. So all these 4-5 star reviews had me thinking yes! this is where I should go for my hair. I am new to Long Beach, so Yelp was helpful in my choice for coming to Syndicate. Too bad their "I'm too cool" attitude got in the way of me getting my hair cut and furthermore, actually giving them business. I walk in at 5:45pm, sign says they close at 7. two people are working on customers...two others are standing around.. one customer is waiting to be seen. I ask how long the wait is, in which case the guy asks "do you have an appointment" I say no, it said we did not need one. the guy then goes "yeah man well we are done for the day." No further explanation, no attempt to capture my business for another day?! Just a stare back.....I uncomfortably walk out........ I applaud Syndicate for being such a success that they are not too concerned about customer service or even decency. I guess those things are not important these days when the economy is booming and your business is just doing so well that poor word of mouth does not matter......They may no doubt come through on their cuts as many of you have mentioned...but make sure you have an appointment because showing up an hour and 15 minutes prior to closing is not enough time for a cut at Syndicate. read more

So I decided to reclaim my testicles, and stop going to foofy salons. Not that there is anything wrong with salons, I just wanted to try something new. After hearing all the hype about this place, I decided to make the leap to The Syndicate. To say I was a bit intimidated when I walked in would be an understatement. I seriously thought at some point somebody might ask me to prove I was a card carrying member of the Social Distortion fanclub. I kinda felt like a Sneetch with no stars, because I have zip in the tattoo department. There were a couple of other nerdy white guys that came in, so I didn't feel completely alone and out of place. After waiting a bit and perusing the stack of "manly" magazines, I was called up to my chair by my barber, Tim. Tim wasn't really much of a talker, which was good, because I wasn't really sure what to talk about. He was very serious about his haircutting though. I don't think I've ever had such a thorough haircut. He even trimmed my old man eyebrows and ear hairs! (Damn, I am getting old!) My overall Syndicate experience was fantastic. It brought back memories of being a kid in the 70's and going to the neighborhood barber. I will definitely be making a return visit! read more

I grew up 26 years of my life without having to pay for a haircut - my dad was a barber. He passed away earlier this year, and my hair keeps growing regardless. I've found a true appreciation for a skillful haircut and shave. I've been to a few other barber shops now, and even a salon or two. No horrifying results, but each new place never felt right to me. Nothing I wrote to Yelp about. Today, I found my new neighborhood barbershop. Went in to Syndicate for my first buzz cut ever and was impressed with the whole experience. Five personable guys were working, all of whom greeted me upon arriving. I felt welcome, had a seat and waited my turn. Plenty of magazines (ones you'd enjoy reading, like Rolling Stone or Men's Health) were lying around to pass the time, and the atmosphere was comfortable between the casual banter amongst the barbers and the good music. The barber who cut my hair was named Dylan. He was friendly and communicative, and even though I wasn't sure what I wanted at first, he really took the time to figure it out. Fast-forward and I'm walking out of there impressed by the whole experience. I'll be back for sure. Haircut was ok but my issue is service. I made an appointment. When I got in Pete's chair I advised I wanted a haircut and shave. He tells me, "I don't have time to give you a shave." So I asked him if he would at least take his clippers and remove the hair from my face and I'd shave when I got home. "I can't. I'm already behind". So I asked him why did I booked an appointment. His reply? "You booked an appointment for a haircut . 1/2 hour only." When I booked the appointment nobody asked what services I wanted. Very poor customer experience. They want to be the old fashioned full service barbershop. The place is dirty and dusty with some offensive wall art but ultimately if the experience isn't good, spend your money at a chain barber. I love this place and should give 5 stars but here's why I can't.... They seem to have a revolving crew. I find a guy I like and I never see him again. I go to someone else. He's real good but I never see him again. I go to someone else. He's not so good.... see him ALL THE TIME. Now he thinks I'm there for him only. I don't usually play favorites here because they've all been so good. But one of the last times I went, another barber finished up and completely ignored me. Must have thought I was waiting for "not so good" guy. Didn't even ask if I was willing to let him cut my hair (which I was). I would love to find someone who's there for the long haul and just become a regular of theirs. All the barbers are pretty friendly for the most part. Some more talkative than others. But me personally, I prefer them to concentrate on their work and not chit chat. That's just me. So 90% of the time I get a great, flawless cut. And the hot foam shave with the hot towel on the face at the end.... aaaaaahhhhh!!!!!! It's like a G rated happy ending. Atmosphere is great. Music is cool. Magazines are awesome. Art work is real cool. With Gallagher's right next door, a haircut and beer/burger after wards is a great Saturday afternoon. Though you put the two together and you're looking at $50 easy so it's become an occasional guilty pleasure. read more

Finally, a great barber shop. Like the other reviewers, I've been to dozens in Long Beach, and this is hands-down the best. Don't be intimidated by the eye tattoos (or ear nose and throat). These guys are artists. The only place that rivals it, in terms of sheer virility, is Hawleywood's, on 4th and Cherry, but they don't have Playboys on the counter or stars tattooed on their eyelids. Plan to spend at least 30 minutes here, and more likely an hour . They don't take appointments, either. But you can always grab a beer or coffee next door at Gallagher's or Sipology. I only had to wait 20 minutes. Again, though, don't let the price dissuade you. For $20, you're getting a salon-style cut by a man's who's never been in a salon. I wouldn't be surprised if they eat raw chickens in the back, or use human scalps for practice. The best part, however, is the conversation. I didn't know there were men in Long Beach who still date on a regular basis and talk about their exploits discretely, as well as reminiscence about the beauty of "gals." Imagine the "Coming to America" cadre--except, instead of 80-year-old black men in Harlem (all played by Eddie Murphy), you've got four or five surfers (all played by Fred Durst). These guys are cooler, however, and like I said, they really do care about your hair. read more

I got my haircut here around a year ago (wow, I'm due for a trim, lol) and it was such a wonderful experience. Love the place, has a wonderful vintage rebel feeling to it. I'm a girlie-girl from head to toe, but getting a haircut gives me almost like an anxiety attack (usually you tell them an inch and you leave the place with a bob haircut, grrrrr). I called them up and ask for a suggestion on who can cut my hair. I love my hair a lo pin-up girl, and they told me that the owner is incredible with ladies haircuts. The recommendation was great. I got compliments from everyone, even my mom who is the pickiest person ever. The ambiance was so laid back, and the stuff was soooo friendly. They even blushed as I picked up a playboy (to read the articles, of course...wink, haha). This is definitely a guy's joint, but I don't mind being one of the boys (just for a little bit, tho) especially with their mad skills. read more

I've been here twice, and I must say they give really good haircuts. They take their time and there is a lot of attention to detail in the work that they do. I especially like the stuff they put on your neck after they shave it; very soothing and it has a pleasant odor. At first I thought $20 seemed a little on the expensive side, but they earn it. So why just 3 stars?... well they are rather disorganized. There are no numbered tickets, so it's up to you to remember your arrival order and whose ahead of you. They also accept appointments, but I've not seen that they record (write these down) anywhere. So I suppose that if one of their friends walk in they could just claim that they are next. I am not claiming that this happens, just that it is possible. Additionally, the last time I was there (a Saturday morning) there was one barber working and the chairs were full. The one barber said a another barber was supposed to come in at 10:00AM, but that time came and went without the barber showing up. All in all I spent almost 2 hours waiting for a 30 minute haircut. My weekend time is valuable to me, so this is unacceptable to me. Bottom line, if I can't cut my wait time to 30-45 minutes I'll go elsewhere. Finally parking is rather spotty. The curb out front is labeled 30 minutes. So, if your in the barbershop for over 2 hours assume that you are eligible for a parking ticket or towing. Brought in my 14-year-old son for the first time to this barbershop. We had an appt with Sergio whom I found on IG. I'd only seen pics of his work so I was expecting to get an exceptional haircut for my son who is graduating tomorrow. I got it!!!!! Sergio was METICULOUS! My son hasn't had a haircut in close to a year and had lots of hair. Sergio was very professional, explained what he was doing and gave suggestions. The Syndicate is just awesome. The barbers are all hardworking and do a good job. These guys take their time and really care about their work. All the barbers there really pay attention to what you want and know how to communicate. They also happen to have excellent taste in music which is great. Nothing like getting a trim while listening to all sorts of diverse punk and rockabilly. I try to go there about once every two months or so and have got my haircut by Tim, Phillip, Chris, Miles, and Eric...All very good barbers and are very good with the straight razor too. I have been going here for years an my haircuts are flawless. Chris, Dylan, and Myles (sp) are the only barbers I trust with my Mohawk. In response to the accusations made by Lindsay K...these guys are not racists, nor are they white supremacists. They are the most down to earth men you will ever meet. I am black AND gay. I have always gotten the above standard treatment on every single visit. I have hung out with these guys on my personal time and met their families. We even watched the gay pride parade together. I understand that you are acting on information your "non white" friend gave you, but it's not fair to blast these honest and hardworking individuals in a public venue without hearing both sides of the story. The take home is that none of us like it when people jump to conclusions based on our exterior appearance. The only way to prevent this injustice is to stop it within ourselves. When you stop judging others, others will stop judging you. I understand your "non white" friend had a bad experience, and for that I am sorry. Allow me to change his mind. You can contact me (via Yelp) and I will personally meet him at the shop and even pay for his haircut! Seems fair enough for a simple misunderstanding. What can I say... I love the boys!!!! My husband, son and I (yes they will cut ladies hair too, so girls don't be shy, plus the boys are cute... eye candy;) ) have been going to Syndicate for almost 5 years now. Chris and Dylan are who we most often have cut our hair but I guarantee that no matter who's chair your in you will walk out happy and looking great. All the guys are very friendly, out going and well, just damn good at what they do. It's a very laid back place with good music most of the time and fun banter back and forth between the guys. They know their clients well and it's kind of like Cheer's when you walk in, everyone says hello and makes you feel at home. The best thing they ever did was start setting appointments so now you don't have much of a wait at all. Before that it was just first come first serve which is fine but they are so busy you might have waited 2 hours just to get into a chair, not that it's not worth it. Keep in mind that the boys are all tatted up just about head to toe, don't judge a book by it's cover, you will not find a nicer group of guys. They don't care if your 6 months old or 106 years old, black, white, green or rainbow colored. They don't care if your straight, gay, trans, don't know, rich or poor. They will welcome you in and treat you like a life long friend from day one. Give them a shot and you'll never go anywhere else again. Oh and the pricing is great. I've been using yelp without personal contribution for a year now i'd say, and if you're reading this and you have been too.. Stop! and Give Back! Syndicate made be want to start yelping myself. But, yeah for years I would get my haircut by my older sister. She never liked my hair because it's not the regular straight healthy asian hair. My hair is thick and wavey. Because of this fact when I went to college I was hesitant on getting my haircut places because I was afraid people wouldn't know how to handle it, but I was wrong. After an hour of searching yelp for the Long Beach area and an hour of my girlfriend complaining about me just going "anywhere," I found Syndicate. I gave them a call to find out if anyone was available and Jordan responded "yeah there are three of us come on down man." I was stoked so we headed down. The shop itself is exactly how people described it. Vintage and Awesome. Way better then going to a woman's hair salon and putting up with chemical stank for a half hour. Jordan (i hope that was your name i'm sorry if i got it wrong you told me it twice) sat me down and asked me what I wanted. The details that i had in mine were that: - I didn't want it to look like I got a haircut - I wanted it thinned out and to stop making weird shapes He told me he thought he knew exactly what I was looking for and went at it. I was hesitant at his confidence, but was like "there's not turning back now." He said that he called it the "invisible haircut" that no one would know I got a haircut, but him and me. Which is exactly what i wanted! He paid so much attention. It felt pretty cool having him thin out my hair, I didn't know barbershops knew anything past a #2 and #4 on the clippers, but he did a really amazing job. When he was done it looked like someone had skinned a cat on the floor at my feet. He asked if I wanted my hair dried, and I said yes and i loved it! My girlfriend loved it to, because she doesn't want my hair short, but he was able to take off all the bulk without taking any significant length. I CAN FEEL THE WIND ON MY SCALP AGAIN! THANKS SYNDICATE! Story Aside: This place was really great, service, price and they know what they're doing. This was my first time, but Jordan was great I'd recommend him again. What could be said that hasn't already been said. I won't get my hair cut anywhere else. Don't let the fully tatted-up barbers intimidate you. These guys will treat your head like its their own. Since Pedro and Andy left, the attitude here has changed a bit. Pedro was always the greeter, made everyone comfortable the minute you walked in the joint. Tim, Chris and the rest are all nice, friendly guys, just a little more reserved. It's not going to keep me from going there, though. Expect to drop $20 for a cut, and don't skimp on the tips. These guys do good work and deserve a little extra. I usually toss them an extra $10 for their efforts. read more

People are always asking me where I get my haircut, so I've decide to write them a well deserved review. No matter who is cutting my hair here, I always get a consistently great hair cut. My best advice would be to call ahead and set an appointment.
