So Liz W. shoots me a message one day saying something to the effect of "Hey Mike, I know you like spicy Chinese food so here's a restaurant you might want to try sometime". Liz by the way is THE Detroit area super reviewer (1000+ reviews) and is one of the most trusted in Detroit. How can I say "No"? It's a cool old school Chinese American restaurant where everyone was really nice and welcoming. The gentleman who waited on me was fast, efficient and made some great recommendations. I ordered my benchmark hot and sour soup which was quite good with a strong pungent aroma and the flavors to match. The Hunan Shrimp lunch combo was really good too. Sze Chuan's was very different from any other restaurant's that I've had with theirs having a little red pepper, spicy black beans, onion and baby corn in it. The flavors were bold and the dish came out spicy, just like I asked for. The lunch portion comes with either an egg roll or a couple crab rangoons. Go for the crab rangoons, trust me on this one. Golden brown with plenty of tasty filling in them. You won't be disappointed. I washed this all down with a couple cold Tsingtao's. The Hunan Shrimp lunch combo, by the way, was priced right at just $8.55. Go there. read more

What happened? This was a great restaurant at one time. Everything now is a la carte. Cheap soy sauce packets in a caddy on the table. Dirty dishes. I would consider this the best Chinese in the area (that I've tried). Lunch is a better deal because it includes soup and either a spring roll or two crab rangoons and a scoop of fried or white rice. My favorite dish for a while has been the Baby Shrimp in Szechuan Sauce. Nothing baby about these guys! Sauce is a perfect combination of sweet and spicy. I also like their Sesame Chicken. Ken's fav is the General Tso's chicken, which if you ask nicely and they aren't too busy (not sure when that is because lunch is usually packed) they'll fry the chicken extra crispy. He orders his hot, which is pretty warm for me but nowhere near flamey mouth. Their wonton soup is delicious. Ken prefers the egg drop (blech). Hot and sour is also a good option. Love their rangoons, especially with the dipping sauce provided on the table. Much better than the spring roll. Lunch isn't too bad, at around $6-8 per meal + tip. Dinner is more costly and everything comes a la carte...but this gives me the chance to have their Cold Sesame Noodles, which are awesome. read more

Over the past 25 years, restaurants have come and gone across Southeast Lower Michigan. Some were family institutions that have been handed down for more than one generation; others came and were gone within a few months, which were nothing more than a flash in a pan. Sze Chuan however, has been around for many years, and has staying power due to providing excellent quality Chinese cuisine. The first time I went to the Sze Chaun was over 15 years ago. The food was excellent, but tended to be on the pricey side, especially if you're a college student on a budget who has to count their pennies. Nevetheless, I have always enjoyed their lunch and dinner menus, as they tend to offer a lot of dishes, and can cook your order any way that you want it prepared. A few weeks ago, I had Beef with Pea Pods that was fantastic. The food was excellent and portions were tremendous. When it was all said and done with, I had enough leftover to take with me to lunch the next day at work. Today, I had their Chicken and Shrimp with Vegetables, which was outstanding. The fried rice was very good as well. The meal came with your choice of soup, and a spring roll. I decided to choose Won Ton for the soup, which wasn't bad at all. While it wasn't the best bowl I've ever enjoyed; I've had far worse over the years. With that being said, I left the Sze Chuan feel full and happy this afternoon. If you're looking for an outstanding dinning experience, and want to try some excellent Chinese food, head on over to the Sze Chuan in Canton. You will not be disapointed. read more

Did a carryout order with many different things when in Michigan. They were great with one in the party having a seafood allergy to ensure there would be no issues. Forgot to take pictures before I started eating. I would recommend trying the pork and fragrant tofu. Not something I would normally order but it was our favorite of a couple different items. Went here for NYE, busy but got a table right away. Service was quick and pleasant. Nice and quiet for a dine in experience. Egg drop soup was good. Pork dumplings boiled were delicious, would try them fried... husby had egg rolls with shrimp and pork, he sad they were okay. Dinner we ordered chicken broccoli in brown sauce, it was sweet, too sweet for me. Sesame beef and broccoli was more like beef jerky! Flavor was good, but flash fried too long made it real tough. And the broccoli was raw for the both dishes a little steam would have been nice. Than we also shared Peking pork, this one was the best, brown garlic sauce. Portions were great, but all the dishes were on the sweet side... recommend yes. But I wasn't crazy about the dishes we ordered... even the tea was just okay. But would try again bc the experience was great, the service was really good and were still looking for our Chinese restaurant. read more

This is the oriental restaurant that we use as a guide to rate all others. My husband took me to this restaurant when it was in a space 1/4 the size as the current size. At the time I had never eaten oriental food in a restaurant. My husband ordered us the spicy sze chuan shrimp and the general tsos chicken. You can choose how spicy you want your meal, we order it spicy not hot. When we are back in Michigan we still go to Canton just to eat this meal! They also have the best spring rolls around. We also really liked the Ann Arbor location when it was open. It was our go to lunch place when we lived in Ann Arbor. I so miss the wonton soup, it had a sliced veggie in it that to this day I can not figure out what it was but still am trying to figure it out. I hate giving this a 5 star rating cause it will make the wait to get a table go up, but they deserve it! read more

While my almond boneless chicken had a perfectly toasted breading, the overall taste was bland and the gravy was a yellow chicken base - not as desired nor as advertised. I ate here for the first time today, after living in the area for 15 years! I ordered the Hunan Chicken, and it was delicious. The first thing you get when you sit down is water and a hot pot of tea. I liked that because I enjoy tea with Chinese food. Lunch comes with your choice of soup, and your choice of spring roll or crab rangoon. i got the egg drop soup, which was good. The spring roll came out with my lunch meal. It, too, was good. As for the Hunan Chicken, I liked the brown sauce quite a lot. What I appreciate is that it wasn't overly salty, which can be a problem with some restaurants. It was tasty and seasoned well and a nice accompany to the chicken, and all the veggies. Hard to go wrong with white rice so no comment there. The spring roll was good too. The service was fast. She walked me through the menu to save me time when I just explained what I liked. My lunch bill was $8.95 which was a good value for the food quality and portion size. There were a lot of items on the menu I'd like to try, and I'll definitely go back. The ambience was nice--the restroom was clean (I always take note of restrooms in restaurants). So far, I'm a fan and glad I dropped in today. The phone operator was so sweet and the employee who helped me when I arrived was just as polite. The shrimp fried rice is really good and so is the beef with broccoli. I'm originally from New York and live in Los Angeles now where it's very difficult to find good Chinese food. My girlfriends family lives in Michigan so whenever we go, I always want to go here because the quality is on par with the good New York Chinese restaurants I used to frequent back in the day. The basil chicken, happy family, sesame chicken, shrimp fried rice are fantastic. The customer service is also on point. Oh boy.... I'm not sure what happened, because we LOVED this place before. We placed a carry- out order for kung pao chicken, Mongolian beef, and shrimp lo mein. Kung pao chicken was easily 50% peanuts. The rest of the tiny pieces of chicken were heavily coated in a thick breading that sort of mixed with the sauce into a thick, pasty, congealed mess. The Mongolian beef smelled like dirty dish water and we couldn't stomach more than a bite of it. The shrimp lo mein was the best out of everything. The shrimp was very tender. However, we also couldn't enjoy it as much because it was SO greasy. One of my favorite things from our last visit was the spring rolls with the house made plum sauce. It was one of the reasons we chose to drive 30 minutes out of our way to get carry-out from here. I was so disappointed to open the bag and find generic packets of sauce instead of the homemade stuff. Perhaps the food is better dine-in than carry-out. Personally, I think a good quality Chinese food place needs to be able to have consistency with carry-out orders as well. read more

We had a horrible experience here last night - Sunday, January 26 2020. My wife ordered four dishes and an appetizer. Since the bag is stapled and closed we could not check inside. They forgot to include Kung Pao chicken. So we were one dish short. The pork for the noodles was probably spoiled, because it smelled horrible. We called and asked them to make it right. After going back the next day, they were just very very rude and unapologetic at all. Nothing but a few dumplings were thrown in to make up for the inconvenience and the rudeness. I've been dining here for decades! I live out of state now but make sure I drop in every time I'm in town. It always amazes me that the wonderful flavor profiles of the food never changes! So the first time we ate here was years ago. We had come to the area from up near Traverse City, to do some IKEA shopping and needed to fulfill our need for asian food. That visit was great, I'll admit I don't remember what we had, but both my wife and I remembered that it was some of the best asian food we'd had in Michigan and definitely top five of all time. We had to go to IKEA a couple of months ago and when it came time to decide where to eat, we were like 'We need to eat at that place we at last time." I did some searching and found the restaurant. My wife had the beef with broccoli and I had the special of the day (which was a chicken dish with lots of different vegetables, I forget what it was called). Once again the food was fantastic. This is a nostalgic restaurant for me as I've been coming here since my parents moved to Canton in 1978. I don't know what happened, the bad part is that I don't think they've changed ownership because I've seen the same snooty lady there, sitting by the front door and doing the books, that I've always known to be the owner....but times certainly have changed cuz they don't serve the great Chinese food they used to anymore. I keep on giving them chances hoping that they've switched back to their old ways and start caring about their food again but after trying several times, its been a failure. It's definitely too bad because I used to love this place but if I'm gonna spend my money on Chinese Food, I'm certainly going to go somewhere that I love. Don't waste your money here. read more
