I didn't want to leave a poor review because I've dined here in the past (a long time ago) and while it wasn't memorable, it wasn't bad. But this recent visit was such a disappointment I felt the need to warn others. The fried rice is heavy on onions, to a fault. Every bite contains semi-crunchy onions which is unpleasant. The beef chow fun is a sad, soggy mess sitting in a layer of oil. Chow fun should have green onions - there is zero green in this dish. The beef quality is also rather low grade and tough. The servers greeted us and gave us another menu. The place has a pretty big menu which offers a variety of cold/hot Asian dishes. My group ordered the five spiced wings, egg rolls, wonton soup, dry pot with meat, spicy chicken, black mushroom tofu and the Korean noodle soup. The wings were really good and crispy! The soup portions were pretty big and filling. The chicken was well cooked and the dry pot was served over a little heater so the meat could keep cooking throughout the meal. We were also given a gigantic portion of rice! It was so far so good as most of us in the group received our order but one person was still waiting for their meal. We waited and waited while our server didn't bother to check in at all.... They completely brushed us off and kept hiding in the back. They didn't bother asking if the food was fine in the first place. Didn't ask if we wanted refills on the water or any other drinks. Finally the server passes near us as she's carrying some dishes and we ask her about the missing dish. She checks in and admits to us that she forgot to place the order then proceed to ask us if we still want it.... Uh.... Yeah we do obviously.... Lol?? She gives us a weak sorry and makes us wait even longer for the final dish. At this point, everyone at the table is almost done with their meal btw and one person is still WAITING. FINALLY, we get the plate for our friend and the check at the same time.... Then she's asking me if we want to-go boxes for everything as if she's trying to get rid of us quickly. How are you going to give us the missing plate, the check, and to go boxes at the same time? Girl what... lol? Like can our friend actually eat the meal they paid for...? It's a bummer because we were really enjoying the food. Not sure if we will be coming back if they can't focus on customer service correctly. Ate here tonight for the 1st time and ordered Szechuan Dumplings, Sesame Chicken, Ma Po Tofu and Shrimp Lomein and all were pretty darn good. The Sesame Chicken was actually the best we've ever had. It wasn't gummy or dried out like so many other places. It was crispy with just the right amount of sauce. Could have used a few more pieces of broccoli. There were only 2. Szechuan seems to be on the decline. We come here a few times per year, but our latest experience wasn't great. The veggie egg rolls ($6 for two) are starchy on the outside and mushy and bland on the inside. Don't order these. The shredded potato with green pepper ($14) was passable at best, with slightly under-cooked potato and an oily blandness. The broccoli in garlic sauce ($14) features unbelievably gloopy, sticky and slimy sauce that had no flavor. The chow fun w/vegetable ($15) looked like it would be great, with homemade noodles, but it tasted bland with overcooked vegetables. The salt and pepper tofu ($15) did taste pretty good, but doesn't travel well as it's fried. The kong pao tofu ($15) was acceptable, but not as good as in my prior visit six months ago. The snow pea tips ($18) were terrible: the pea tips themselves looked old and brown and they almost tasted burnt. All told, we were really disappointed. I hope Szechuan can turn it around with our next visit. If you're looking for really good Szechuan food, check out Legendary Spice in Minneapolis or Grand Szechuan in Bloomington. I have lived in Saint Paul for 23 years and have eaten take out from Szechuan since it opened. We eat there every other weekend. I am astonished by the other restaurants nearby that seem busier but are far less delicious. I've tried most things on the menu and have never not liked an item. My go to for years and years is the Dan Dan Noodle and the Chung King Chili Chicken. These are two of the best dishes in the state of Minnesota and have been for over a decade. My wife and I adore Szechuan on Snelling and if I could give it more than five stars I would. Thank you for the years of delicious food and wonderful service. My friends and I stopped in on a whim totally starving. It's a fairly small place but tables are distanced. They offered complimentary hot tea and it was very good! The reason I do not recommend is because I just moved in Roseville and I was looking for a Szechuan restaurant to eat because I love Szechuan food. So I ordered the spicy beef noodles, there was one piece of meat in it, or should I say beef fat with very little meat on it. Also, it was very oily from the chili oil so I paid $16 for the flavor soup with noodles, I could've made noodles at home, I also ordered the pork eggrolls. Once again, I paid attention to the Review of the Day, and once again, I was able to convince my friend, Jack, to try out a new place for us at lunch. Szechuan is pretty close to our work, so we were surprised we hadn't eaten here before. First off, the place is very clean. So you know that makes me happy. I love steamed dumplings, and Szechuan serves theirs with a twist. They make it spicy with chili paste. I'm sold, but the only downside is that the dumplings are swimming in some of the chili paste oil. I told Jack that I judge an Asian restaurant by their Ma Po Tofu. This one was pretty good. Not great, but good for me. For both the food reasons, plus the cleanliness of the place, I give Szechuan a four out of five stars. Jack had the Lemon Chicken, and we both prefer the version that serves a chicken breast without a lot of breading. This one is the latter, but Jack said that and the Hot and Sour Soup were good. Prices were good and the portions are generous. Next time I may order off the lunch menu as I wasn't able to finish mine, and I can pack it away. So thanks for highlighting Szechuan as a ROTD. We ate at Szechuan once when we first arrived in the Twin Cities almost two years ago now, and I'm kind of embarrassed that it has taken us this long to get back there. But we did finally go back. Szechuan is one of those awesome find kind of places that's tucked away in a strip mall and easy to miss. To get to it, turn onto the side street where the Outback is. Don't make the mistake of thinking you can turn right into the strip mall from Snelling because you can't, and you have to go a fair ways before you can make a U turn. So head for the Outback and find your way to the access road from there. OK, food: We totally love the Szechuan dumplings in chili oil, which are on the appetizer list for like $7 or something ridiculously cheap like that. They are lovely (pork, i think) dumplings that come drenched in the most amazing chili oil and big pats of pressed garlic. Oh -- soooo yummy. The dan dan noodles are pretty decent though not as spicy as I'd like. I got the peking pork this time around, and asked for the pancakes too (extra charge).. The pork was super yummy, with the right kind of hoisin flavor and that delightfully crunchy yet sticky flavor that seems to be iconic of peking anything. We also got the chicken with mixed vegetables, which was fine, but paled in comparison with everything else we ordered. Szechuan is a really nice option for authentic Chinese in the area, and it is super delicious. Finally, a great Chinese restaurant in the Twin Cities! As an American-born Chinese, I'm a Chinese food snob... and this place is where I go for some home-cooking. For you Minnesoteans: this place is truly spicy, so beware. The ma po tofu is my favorite, and has a particularly lip-numbing spice to it. The spicy eggplant is also delicious. I was a little disappointed in their Peking duck, but you really can't beat Chinatown in NYC for that. Their beef chow fun is truly authentic (reminds me of Mom's). The pan fried noodles looked like brown mush with a bunch of veggies thrown in. The most disappointing dish was the Hong Shao Rou. It was salty oily. My wife and I ate here last summer after shopping. We read good reviews so decided to give it a try. The outside looks a little odd and inside not many people since it was 5PM. After a few minutes, we saw several Asian families came in which is good sign. I got hot and sour soup and my wife got wonton soup to start. The menu does still have the American Chinese favorites but if your looking for spice and heat they now have some serious dishes to get your nose running. Noodles here are hand made and delicious. The steamed dumplings were also lovely, as were the pork bao (just ate one for breakfast). Szechuan is *the* best Chinese food in the twin cities. They are serving flavorful, delicious food that has all the right textures, temperatures, and tastes. We've been coming here since they opened. It's an interesting menu, as they serve Szechuan, but also northern appetizers, some Cantonese choices, and Korean noodles? In any case, everything I've ever ordered here has been delicious, and it's really the only Authentic Chinese place in this part of town. The next closest you'd have to get to Dinkytown or Stadium Village. In that respect this place really stands out. It is on the spendy side for what you get. I just don't get why the Szechuan places in town think they can charge 20-30% more for food just because they have Szechuan in their name. It's not freaking sushi!! Well the rant aside, when we're in Roseville and don't want to drive to Dinkytown, this is our stop for real Chinese. Disclaimer about other posts complaining about "oily" dishes. Szechuan pepper sauces are oily. The pepper essence is in the oil, and also all the full-bodied flavor. If you don't like oil in your food order the other stuff. FYI I'm Cantonese. Bear in mind that for weekend dinner hours the parking lot is a zoo because of the popularity of the bar at Outback. So come here for lunch or weeknights. It's been a while since I was this impressed by a restaurant in a strip mall! I wish that Szechuan's chef Don Jian lived in my kitchen so he could make me the fish in chili broth on a daily basis.. The dish was simple: tender, flaky white fish swimming in a flavorful, spicy, oily chili broth with sprouts and herbs. We literally spent most of dinner raving about how good this was. Order it. Thank me later. The pork/chicken wontons and the beef with peppers weren't as memorable, but we raved (not as enthusiastically as we did about the fish, but raved nonetheless) about the tea smoked duck with ginger and the black mushrooms and bok choy. The dumplings with chili sauce were awesome as a starter too, and the only smaller sized portion of the night. Everything tasted fresh, distinct and was obviously cooked to order (not wok'd up for five minutes with one of three different sauces like many Chinese restaurants). The presentation was excellent as well (I wish I had taken photos). Our server brought each item out as it was prepared, so it wasn't exactly typical service, but it was all hot when it arrived at the table and I'd prefer that anyway. In hindsight, we should have ordered only 2-3 main dishes to share between four of us last night. That makes it pretty affordable too, since each entree ($9-17) is the equivalent of 4-5 normal sized meals. It was an obscene amount of food. I nearly exploded. Tip: I would just ignore all of the Americanized Chinese dishes like sesame chicken and General Tso's and pay attention to the "Szechuan Specialties" section of the menu. That's where it's at. First and last visit to this location. I was fairly optimistic with all of the endorsements on the door, but our visit was a huge let down. During the lunch hour I would expect that there would be more than two servers on in a busy packed restaurant. The pleasant gentleman that seated us was nice and took our drink orders fairly fast, but the speed ends there. My beverage came in a glass with a thick film around it. I couldn't get a new one for about 20 minutes. A party of 6 came in a long time after us and were waited on immediately. It took about 25 minutes just to place our order. We would've left and just paid for the sprite, but there was no one around. Finally a woman came to take our order who had some highly unfavorable lingering toxic breath making it really hard for me to be hungry. I'm sorry, but that just about sent my stomach over the edge. She was very sweet and I don't mean to be mean, it just wasn't very pleasant to have to endure. The food is alright, nothing spectacular. The hot and sour soup was not even hot temperature wise. The pork with bamboo shoot tips were alright. I tasted some of J's sesame chicken and thought it was gross. Really doughy batter and what seemed to be really low quality chicken. After waiting forever to get our bill, someone finally came to the register so we could pay.
