My older car started giving me problems and Tony was honest and told me to get what I could from the car,not to put money in the car in the state it was in and put money in a newer car. I was starting to have trouble with my car stalling. We found out it was the Intake and Exhaust Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve. I ordered the part thinking I could just change it myself, I mean, I can change oil by myself. Yea, no. T & J Automotive was recommend through a friend (thanks FB recommend posts). I was looking for a place that wouldn't jerk me around and would do good, honest, fast work and near by. We brought in our car Saturday, but they were full. He said to come back Tuesday morning as they would have room to service my SUV. We brought it in this morning promptly at 7am and he took it right away. We got the call at 12:30pm that our car was ready for pickup. Talk about fast! Tony was helpful from start to finish, efficient, knowledgeable, and most importantly, honest. With a heavy heart, I am updating my originally glowing five star review of Tony and T & J Automotive. We've entrusted this shop with our family cars for two generations with thousands of dollars in services and repairs. But that relationship stops here today. I've had 3 weeks to ponder over this negative review and hesitated because I don't want to speak badly of any business. But I always want consumers to be weary of shady, unreliable practices. Hoping to save my Yeeps the thousands of dollars & inconvenience we've endured so here it goes. Our family car needed to have the transmission rebuilt in 2016. Peninsula Transmission in San Bruno are highly regarded professionals, however we could not stomach their $4200 estimate. T & J normally does our regular maintenance so we sought a quote for the same work. $3,000 "with OEM parts" and a standard warranty of 1 year or 12,000 miles, whichever occurs first. Tony was transparent in disclosing that the work would have to be outsourced to a business associate in Novato called Valle Auto as he didn't have the means nor the expertise to rebuild a trans. T & J vetted this outside source and spoke highly of Valle. They even worked out having our car towed from T & J to Novato built into the quote. After careful consideration, we authorized the repairs. Fast forward to 2 years, 20,000 miles, and minus $3,000 cash later. While driving on El Camino, the car ceases to accelerate beyond 35 mph as the check engine light illuminates. The gears on our automatic transmission feel like they've slipped again (the original issue that triggered the rebuild). Honda Service diagnostic confirmed our worst fear. Same fatal code as before: P0730 Incorrect Gear Ratio. The only way to correct the problem is to rebuild the trans AGAIN. I immediately call Tony for guidance with how to proceed, expecting that he would stand by his work as an honest man operating a reputable business. He offers to contact Valle and I text Tony a copy of my original receipt for his reference (apparently shop records are haphazardly kept and not in order). 3 days after our initial conversation, I'm still without a response AND WITHOUT A FUNCTIONING CAR so I call Tony again. He reassured me Valle would have a solution, asking I "give them a couple more days" to work out some sort of discount to repair their original work. Meanwhile, we see our old transmission pro Rico at Peninsula Transmission. We leave the car with Rico to test drive & he gets back to me first thing the next morning with a quote & diagnosis. He graciously keeps our car on site while we await word from T & J. After the 6th calendar day and still no action from Tony, I call T & J again. What is the delay?? He's now referring to his business associates as "the morons at Valle Auto". So let me get this straight, when you wanted my $3000, Valle was a highly recommended vendor... but now that you've collected my money, suddenly neither of you stand by the work done and they're the incompetent ones? No information on Google nor Yelp for any shop named Valle in the Novato area. I asked Tony to give me the name, phone number, & address directly. He says he doesn't have their contact information on hand but he will text it to me. Last opportunity to give this man the benefit of the doubt. After 8 calendars and still no correspondence from Tony, I confidently endorse Peninsula Transmission to fully rebuild our transmission. Rico provided us with a generous 3 year / 36,000 mile warranty and the quote included additional repairs recommended by the dealership to the mounts, axel, and CV joint at no additional labor cost. Whether you need major work or fluids flushed, stay far away from T & J. Go straight to Mr. Rico at Peninsula where word is bond. read more

not so happy, took my car there to get looked at as something was draining my battery, he told me he would charge me half of his diagnostic fee since i was a 1st time customer, he called me a few hours later and said my alternator was weak, he then attempted to charge me a total of 1300 for a new alternator and labor, i called around to see if that was a normal estimate only to find out it was a very high estimate, i called back and asked him what was wrong with my alternator with my cousin whose a mechanic in nevada, he felt offended i was trying to get more information and now he refused to work on my car and all of a sudden says i have to pay the full diagnostic charge, not what he told me in the beginning and seems to charge top notch prices, i took my car to a mechanic in the valley and he is doing the same job with the same part for 750.00, i left feeling uneasy about doing business with them again read more

Then I ended up getting their help with installing leather seats, where they took really good care of my car--during both the install and partial return portion of the purchase (no fault of theirs). I have been taking my cars to Tony for over 6 years now and i would not take it anywhere else! Tony is a fantastic mechanic, the best part is he's HONEST! It can be hard to find a great mechanic and i am so lucky to have found Tony. Recently, my Infinity FX 45 started to make a loud banging sound when i drove and i got really worried something was seriously wrong. I took it to Tony and he knew exactly what was wrong with it. It was a loose muffler, Tony doesn't do mufflers so he referred me to he friends shop. I went there and the man fixed it within 5 minutes and then didn't even charge me. I wanted to pay, but he said it was ok since it was an easy fix. If Tony cant fix it, he refers me to someone that can. Tony also stands by his quote for a repair. I have never been charged over his original quote, in fact, i have paid less then the quoted price because the part needed was on sale, it took less time then he originally thought or he got oil on sale. Tony is so FRIGGIN cool! I've been using T&J for about 4-5 years and I have yet to get the screwed job. The first couple of times I was actually surprised that he only charged me for the basic 'check and make sure it's safe' fee. With mechanics I always expect to hear about some "horrible problem that just has to be fixed today, even though it's terribly expensive" at which time they feign real empathy!
