I had my brake pads inspected and replaced with Richards Auto Repair on 9/28/2020. Last week(on 3/24/2022) when I went to another shop for tire rotation and oil change, I was told that they couldn't do the tire rotation because of defective lug nuts(Later I found that the front passenger side lug studs were broken too). As Richards Auto Repair was the last shop to take my wheels off, so I went to them(On 3/31/2022) and asked if they can fix it for me. They denied breaking it and wouldn't fix it for free. Why do I think they broke the lug nuts and studs? I remembered when they finished replacing the brake pads, the technician walk me through the car and told me that they caused some small damage on the lug nuts cap and it should be fine. I was not very happy but I thought it was just cosmetic and I didn't say anything at that time. I also did some research online and it seems that "The most common cause of a bad or failing wheel stud is due to improper installation by tire service technicians, over torquing of lug nuts, or lug nuts that are not tight enough." THEY WERE THE LAST SHOP TO TAKE OFF MY WHEELS and I never touched OR had anyone else touched the wheels. I couldn't prove that it is their fault for sure. But the experience is unpleasant and I decided to go to another shop for repairing. It was not cheap, it cost me $448.37 for replacing the lug nuts and studs. read more

Yes, 5 Stars!!! Barry, the owner, and David, one of his best employees he has had over the years, will always make you feel welcome, even if you are a jerk like me and just "drop-in".... Recently (early August 2015) my wife purchased new "cheap" (no, they were really CHEAP) tires from a major national chain retailer who won't be named (tramlaw) but they sell clothes, groceries, and other cheap stuff from China..... (and Chinese friends, don't be "offended" my wife is Chinese, from Beijing, and she tells me all the time that a lot of stuff is "cheap".) Okay, anyways, on to the gist of what happened - my wife went back to that retailer 4 times to get those CHEAP tires re-balanced.... Finally, they refused to exchange the tires, they said her car's alignment must be "off" and for her to get her car realigned! WTF.... So, I told her to drop in on Barry, and see if he had time to re-balance the tires and check the Alignment on her car. She did, and Barry squeezed her in to his busy schedule, got her car's tires re-balanced, and checked the alignment - which for practical purposes was not "out" of alignment. Sure, he made a few minor tweaks - but he told me that those tweaks were not significant enough to caused the tire balance problems that Walmart's (oops, name slipped) Auto Techs were telling my wife was the problem!!! Barry was my wife's HERO!!! No, I'm not jealous.... yet. Seriously, Barry did an excellent job fixing the balance on those Cheap-ass'd tires - the very next day, my wife and I took off on a road trip to Eureka California (you've probably seen my reviews and check ins) and those tires were smooth as "butter" and stayed smooth, and as of this writing 2 weeks later - they are still smooth!!! Thank goodness for Yelp. With so many auto repair places on San Mateo Avenue, it's hard to know which one to go to. I needed to get replacement tires for two cars - yes, at the same time, sucks I know! My husband did the hard work, researching options on line at tire rack and placing an order. Luckily, tire rack has a list of recommended tire installation places, so between those recommendations and double checking on Yelp, Richards Auto Repair looked like a winner. And it was. Our tires were delivered late Tuesday morning, so we gave Richards a call to see if we could schedule the installation. They said they could do it at 4:00 that same day, so we headed down there. I was worried because I guess there was a slight misunderstanding and they thought it was only two tires, not two cars with full sets, but they still accommodated us. We dropped off one, went shopping for a little under an hour, then went back to exchange cars, and next thing you know, we have two cars with two new sets of tires and alignments done just like that. I feel bad because I'm sure that meant that some guys had to work late that day, but I really appreciate that they were able to finish the cars instead of asking us to either leave the car overnight or come back tomorrow for the other. We may consider going back for new brake pads when the time comes. They definitely are professional and the prices are pretty reasonable. Thanks guys! read more

I took my miata here to change the alternator and diagnose a bad idle. I've been trying to figure out the idle issue for weeks but Barry diagnosed the problem as a mass air flow sensor and exhaust gas recirculation valve. He used sound logic on why a junk yard egr valve is a bad idea with the electronics vs the old mechanical ones I'm used to. Its worth the money because he knows what he is talking about. They even have a rotor as a doorstop for those RX-7/8 rotorheads out there. read more

My experience was totally different from those of the five star reviewers. I took in my car because of brake issues, and David told me that it would cost $1100 to fix the problem. After the diagnostic, I was told that I needed front brakes as well as a master cylinder, which cost $500. I found the item online for $50. The car is a 1998 Pontiac Grand Am. Clearly I do not need the highest quality OEM parts. I don't think the entire car is worth $1100. I took it to another shop to get a second opinion and they changed the front brakes and "bled the system" which took care of all the brake issues for a small fraction (less than half) of David's estimate. Turns out I didn't even need a new master cylinder at all. I know that shops need to make money, and I can understand that the prices of parts will be marked up to increase profits. However, suggesting work that is completely unnecessary and pushing the purchase of absurdly expensive, unneeded parts, is entirely unacceptable. read more

I had 3 services done at this shop, as recommended by Tire Rack, and it is a hit or miss here. If you ever have to go here, I would only seek help from Barry. He was very nice, he will take care of your car problems, and does so with an attitude that satisfies customer service. He helped me out with processing my tire mounting and balancing. Only issues I had were that a set of weights fell off one wheel (which he fixed), and I noticed that I would get vibration from the wheels at freeway speeds only. He said that the tires may need breaking in, and to come back earliest 4 days from that day, and he would check his work. I brought it home, and a couple days later I replaced one bolt on each wheel with a wheel lock. Fast forward almost a couple months and 2000 miles later, I decided to go back and have them check the vibration (since the vibration did not bother me completely when driving overall), and install new tires on another set of wheels that I ordered through Tire Rack. New tires are doing fine so far on the other set, by the way. David and another mechanic were the "miss" part of the service here. When processing the new tire installation, the other mechanic just handed me the invoice to sign it. Compared to Barry, who actually ran me through every detail on it last time, this guy did not, and I had to spend the time to read through each charge I was going to pay for (not so great service). David tried to help me with the most diligence with the vibration problem on the wheels from last time, but threw out all of his nice act in the end. After taking a look at it, he said that 2 of the 5 lug nuts were cross-threaded on the front driver side, and one of those bolts snapped when they "tried to remove it". I only touched one of the 5 for installing the wheel lock since the last time I came to their shop, and that one was not one of the 2 that were damaged. David claimed it was not possible for their shop to make such a mistake, but honestly, their shop was the last one to have touched those cross-threaded nuts. We tried to work it out professionally while trying not to point fingers, but in the end, David accused me of possibly being the one to mess it up, called me disrespectful to his business, and voided my warranty due to the tension. He was trying to practice his focus on customer satisfaction, but shut off his act and put me (the customer) on full blast, and did not even give me a chance to explain. And for some reason, he stated that he needed to keep MY lug nuts. On the invoice that I had to sign and pay for, he wrote "Customer was inconsistent, and is questionable." You know what David, BACK AT YOU. Customer service was a total hit or miss, as I had to deal with both nice and hostile service at your shop, especially not trying to own up to any possibility of a fuckup at your shop that I have no responsibility for. I'm in the middle of replacing the hub myself, and by looking into the cross-threaded holes, I cannot even fit a bolt through it. There was a bolt in it before, and that was the work of your shop. If you claim that it was not installed correctly, and by you removing the bolt and seeing it being cross-threaded, you guys did not install it correctly in the first place, and you messed it up when you removed it. Unless your mechanic tried to force it in in the first place, that's another deeper level of fuckery. As if my purpose was to disrespect you and your shop...psh. My goal was to get the problem fixed, and I tried to do so in a civilized manner. I never raised my voice during our confrontation, and I tried to make the situation as easy as possible. Putting the cross-threading problem aside, the fact that you treated your customer like this ruined my experience at your shop. So much for Customer Relations Management... I have heard from some people that shops on San Mateo Ave. can be sketchy. I cannot help but say that this shop is one of those sketchy shops after my experience there. read more

I had to take my car in to get the AC recharged, so I called and made an appointment for 1pm. I got there a little early, and waited for some time (I was 9 months pregnant and about to pop) so I was a little irritated. The guy in the garage (obviously the mechanic and not the front desk "people person") ignored me for a few minutes, but then came over and explained that the guy I had an appointment with was out to lunch and should have been back by 1pm. He called him to remind him he had an appointment, and he rushed back. He was very quick at recharging the AC for me and was very nice. This was around 4 months ago, and the AC still works well, so I conclude that they did a good job. I felt like it was a tad expensive ($125 if my memory serves me) considering it took them 15 minutes to do the work and freon can't be too expensive, but hey, I can't do it myself, now can I? read more

I've gone back a couple times for simple oil changes on my civic and they've always gotten me out of there pretty quickly. They've been able to accomodate me during my lunch time and I'm usually out of there in 20 minutes. Consistent friendly service. Oil cap was always there after that one incident, which is a good thing! ha ha btw. did I mention that because of the oil cap incident, they gave me an oil change on the house? These guys are great! The shop is clean and tidy, and they offer great and honest service to all customers. I knew my Honda Accord needed to have a brake job, and I thought its CV joint was going bad since I heard a bunch of clicking noises when making turns. I went to Yelp to look for a good auto repair shop and found Richard's Auto Repair had great reviews, so after a phone call I went in. They took the car out for a drive and diagnosed the problem. They gave a great explanation of what needed to be done. I appreciated their honesty and agree with a previous reviewer that they don't try to "trick you" unlike a Midas shop down south that tried to heap a bunch of unnecessary repair work on my wife after she took the car in for a free oil change. The Midas shop even took off some of the parts thinking she would let them start work, but she knew better not to sign the authorization and got the car out of the shop quickly. I had to laugh that she didn't fall for the "Midas touch" while sticking it back to the guys who thought they had a sucker. My day job is to perform compliance audits, and in a previous life, I've been a mystery shopper, so I tend to look at the details of an operation, and I would definitely say from my recent experience that I would trust David and Barry on my Mercedes when it's time for its A and B Service. For me, it doesn't get better than this. I want an HONEST mechanic who does good work. And that is exactly what I got. I needed to replace the clutch on my 2006 Subaru WRX (turbo). It was an expensive clutch kit. But I did my "due diligence" and called four places for estimates. They all gave me different prices on the parts alone. The dealership said my clutch kit alone was $1,000.00! What a crock. David at Richard's Auto Repair gave me the lowest price of all the places I'd called. I found him on Yelp, and here I am to attest to the high marks they get. I saved $500 off athe dealership quote. They just don't make many honest mechanics anymore. Thanks guys. I'll be back! Oh yeah, another thing...when I dropped my car off, David gave me a lift to the Caltrains station. Talk about customer service! He apologized for not being able to take me all the way back to Foster City because someone was on vacation and he didn't have much extra time to get the work done and me home. Inside I'm thinking, "Holy Cow! You've got to be kidding me!" They're awesome. And my clutch is way better than it was before. When I bought the car (brand new from the dealer in 2006), shifting was difficult because the clutch was so tight. It gave me a lot of resistance. Now it's like a friend's Honda I've driven, smooth as "buddahh". I'm still working on getting it into first without revving it up too much. But all clutches take some time to find the ideal acceleration switch off point. read more

Hello Again!!! Just about 2 weeks ago now, you may remember, the State of California had their big "garage sale" --- are you with me now? If you don't remember, well, they sold a bunch of the State's "Stuff" including desks, filing cabinets, computers, crap, and over 2,000 automobiles (mostly trucks). I only mention this, because I bought one of their old Cal Trans Cargo Vans (orange is such a good Summer color, you think!) Well, despite the "great" orange color, I bought it for a GREAT price, which made the lousy color worth it. However, you know that law in California which REQUIRES the SELLER (the State in this case) to SMOG a vehicle when selling it??? Remember this law???? Well, I do remember this law, however, the State seemed to conveniently "forget" this law!!!! So, I had to get my new van smogged before getting it registered! I was thinking this should be a snap, since its a State vehicle, and has been regularly maintained, it should easily pass with flying colors. That is my thinking - so, I now live on the East Bay (near Fremont) and don't think for such a simple thing I'll drive it up to San Bruno (40 minutes away) to have Barry and Richards Auto do a simple SMOG. Here is where I get in to trouble...... I take it to a SMOG shop here on the East Bay (near my office) and they had no customers waiting, so I'm thinking - SCORE!!! I've hit a home run, I can be in and out over my lunch break. Have that damn SMOG done, and get this orange beast registered...... Was I ever so wrong!!!! I wasted that hour, and that shop was trying to convince me that I was going to need to replace "this" and "that" and "BS" etc.... Now, I may have been born at night... BUT, it was NOT last night!!!! I knew I needed at least a 2nd opinion!!!! Before putting out over a FIFTEEN HUNDRED BUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So, I call Richards, talked to Barry, to see when I can come in with the Van. He said he could fit me in on Saturday. I didn't want to wait that long, I just wanted to get this bitch done and registered. I wanted to know if I could drive it in that evening, I could get off work a little early. I figured with the reverse commute, I'd only have the 101 to deal with. Barry said he would wait for me! Who ever waits anymore??? GREAT! So, I get up there to Richards Auto, that evening with the orange beast; and Barry does the SMOG on it...... Results - 100% pass - NO tricks either!!! Barry didn't fudge the results - in fact it runs really clean, almost as good as new trucks - and this thing has over 90K miles and is a 1993 Ford Cargo Van. Well, gladly I pay Richards Auto their regular fee plus the State's BS Cert fee. I'm in to if for just pennies unlike if I had believed that other a-hole shop who just tried to rip me off!!! I guess that other dishonest auto shop thought I wouldn't mind paying over a fifteen hundred bucks for "repairs", especially since I paid so little for the van!!! Or, maybe that other shop's owner thought I was just another stupid "white" American who blindly pays without getting second opinions??? All I know, is that I'm sending a letter in to the B.A.R. about that other dishonest Shop - I'll update you later if they are shut down. My last word.... You can ALWAYS trust Barry and Richards Auto Repair in San Bruno - AND - its ALWAYS worth the extra drive if your like me, and live here in the East Bay!!! read more

I found this business through Tire Rack, as they are one of the preferred vendors. Though their posted business hours (8am to 6pm) don't quite match their actual working hours (8:30am to 6pm), I found them very pleasant and efficient to work with. Barry Ta, the owner is very nice, and replaced the tires on my car in record time. He took great care not to scratch the rims or damage the tires, cleaned them up and made them look amazing, as he installed them. They state that they do brakes, tune ups, smog testing & repair, check engine light, air conditioning, and other diagnostics, and are ASE certified. I've never used them for any of these services, but based on my great experience with them in having my tires changed out, I would definitely use them again. read more

Couldn't be happier about how David dealt with my brake situation. Provided two options... a less-expensive-now-but-more-expensive-later version -- and a more expensive do-it-right version. I didn't feel like I was being hard-sold at all when I opted for the somewhat pricier choice -- because in the end I'm sure it will be the safer thing to do. They are located just blocks from Tanforan Shopping Center, so I hung out there while I waited for the work done. (Which, by the way, they did without any advance appt. from me... they just made my car a priority, which I really appreciated, given my tight timeline today.) David even offered to drive me to the mall, but I wanted to enjoy the nice weather. I talked to him afterwards when I came back to get my car about doing some more tuneup-type work, and felt like he was just fine with doing whatever amount I could afford and that he wasn't going to pressure me into doing some super-expensive engine overhaul. Came in with a pretty shitty brake situation, and they showed me everything on the brakes that was going wrong. Walked me through how the parts interact, which as an engineer was a nice conversation to have. We then talked about what the possible fixes were, and then they gave me estimates for just about every variation. They got the job done without any real notice, and also got me a great deal on a new set of tires since my back tires were pretty much done. Also got a ride to and from the office. Used Yelp, and it worked! Heading up to the S.city from San Jose for a birthday party and my car died in the San Bruno area. It was already 8pm and not a single human in sight. Kept on turning the key in the ignition, hoping it will come back. After 30 minutes of unsuccessful tries, my car battery is now depleted. Ok my car is officially dead with a rotten egg smell?... Yelped "Auto repair, San Bruno on my phone. Richards have good ratings and reviews. I gave it a shot, called towing 100 bucks good god! Furious and frustrated and being foreign to the area sucks. Parked my car in front of Richards waiting for Tuesday to come, because of Labor day. Tuesday, called first thing in the morning and asked for Barry. He was patient and listened to my story and explained why there's a car parked in front of his shop. He said it fine, come in and he will take a look at it. Barry and David was excellent in customer service, very friendly, and no bullshit. I am amazed how fast they work. They worked on the car for about 40 minutes and it was back from the DEAD! They found the problem, so diagnostics wasn't charged i'm a poor student. Battery was replaced the old one had leakage and electrical wires also replaced. Definitely recommend 2 thumbs up. read more

I don't know who "Richards" is, but Barry and David have been my only mechanics for the past couple years now, since I discovered them on Yelp. They are fair and practical and willing to work with my budget. The price they charge is always WAY below what I would have to pay elsewhere. I've been experiencing some kind of oil leaks from my BMW and had went to another location to try to fix it. The other shop had told me to replace my oil pan gasket to fix the leak. However after they did that and when I picked up my car they told me good luck with it. Obviously it didn't work, my garage floor had oil drips within a week. I had some friends tell me that it is normal to have an old BMW drip oil but I'm thinking the car is only 9 Years new. After asking around and thinking that the car didn't leak when I bought it, there must be something wrong with it and decided to try Richards Auto Repair as it was recommended by my coworker. I had called for an appointment and when I arrived Barry came out to greet me and was very courteous and professional. He even dropped me off at the Bart station. When Barry called me to explain his diagnosis and what needed to be done, he explained it in a way that I could understand and though I said just do it and don't explain as I don't understand auto terms. It turned out that the previous location messed up on the oil pan gasket and that the leak wasn't even from there. When I picked up my car barry explained again what he did and he even showed me the parts that came out of my car. It's been two months now and my garage is spotless. I bought a couple of tires from tirerack.com for my '99 Chrysler LHS and these guys were one of the local recommended installers. I read the reviews here on yelp and chose them to do my tires. The great thing about tirerack.com is they give you the option to have the tires shipped to you or to the shop you choose to install them. I ordered the tires on Sunday and they were delivered (complete with tracking number) to Richard's on Tuesday morning. Knowing they would be there Tuesday, I called on Monday and made an appointment for 2pm on Tuesday. I also need an alignment due to the fact that I replaced 2 very bad inner tie rod bushings. The bad bushings caused one of my front tires to wear down to the steel cords on the inner sidewall. After replacing the bushings, it steered just a little off and the steering wheel was a bit off center. Another cool thing about tirerack.com is they had a coupon for $10 off an alignment. So I dropped of the car and they said about an hour, so I went for a walk up to Tanforan (about a 10 minute walk) to get some lunch. Came back in an hour and it was still on the rack.I figured they were just finishing up, so I didn't bother them. 30 minutes later, I see 2 guys working on it still. I asked about and they said they were having trouble with one of the adjusting sleeves. Apparently it had seized and would not budge. My first thought was, oh no, what are they gonna try to add to the job and how much $$$? They said they would do whatever it takes to do the job right. I asked what they had in mind and the mentioned that they sprayed lots of penetrating lubricant and were letting it soak in. I mentioned what about heating it up with a torch and he said that would be the next step if their first plan didn't work. After another 15 minutes or so, I see them lowering the car on the lift, so I figure they're all done. Well, the guy I had been speaking with (forgot if it was Dave or Barry) went to check it out and I guess he noticed the steering wheel was a little off center for his liking, so they raised it back up and readjusted with the steering wheel centered and they were done. It took an hour longer than promised, but not the fault of the shop, just the seized up adjusters. They got it done, with no extra parts or charges and the car steers straighter than it ever has. I drove about a block down San Mateo Ave with no hands on the wheel and it stayed dead center of the lane the whole way. The guys were very helpful, communication was excellent and no extra charges. Having been to Wheel Works for alignments and tires in the past, I've almost come to expect the "you're gonna need new bearings and struts. We'll do it for $8,658,084!!!". I liked how they showed you the parts that were broken, they have diagrams/maps in the office to explain the parts of the car to you. Prices were reasonable (I called up two places to compare and this place marked up by about $60) but because due to time and circumstance, I needed to get the repair done. There are no coffee shops around this area; NOT walkable. You need to be picked up/dropped off. Or YOU may try to walk to downtown San Bruno. Not sure how long the walk will be. read more

I own a 2012 Fiat 500 Pop that I have been trying to smog for the past three weeks. For the first time I brought my car to Richard's Auto Repair because the price they charge for the smog is reasonable. Unfortunately due to an OBD (On Board Diagnostic) error message my car continued to fail the smog. After you pay for the initial smog check and if your car fails, Richard's will give a customer an additional free check. Initially Barry recommended I drive the car. From on-line searches and from what I read on Fiat chat boards that is the only way to remedy the OBD error message. For the past two weeks I tried putting additional miles on the car and for the past two weekends took my car to Richard's Auto Repair where Barry would hook up his meter to my car at no additional cost. I even took my car to the dealer due to a gear shift cable recall and asked if they could possibly reset the OBD so I could pass the smog. They told me they could not and that the only way to remedy the problem was to drive my car through five cycles. They offered to drive my car for for $400. I took my car back to Richard's where he offered to diagnose the problem for less. The great news is that through Barry's expertise and DILIGENCE he was able to fix the problem. With his help my car passed the smog test so I am good to go. Barry is now my go to mechanic. Women, there are mechanics that will take advantage of you. It gives me peace of mind knowing I can trust Barry. I highly recommend him and Richard's Auto Repair. read more
