I've also known the owner for years - she is a kind, respectable person who truly cares about her customers. However, over the past year or two, I've noticed a decline in customer service. There are a few sales associates whose approach often makes shopping uncomfortable. They seem eager to help younger women or those who fit the mold of a certain aesthetic, but if you don't, the experience changes. Instead of showing flattering pieces that could accentuate your positives, they tend to pull oversized items - with more of an appeasing "let's cover you up" attitude rather than talking to you positively about what could look good on you. Even when I share my preferences and typical size, I'm often presented with clothing that feels mismatched to what I've expressed I like. At this point, it feels less like a mistake and more like inexperience or a lack of understanding of how to style different body types. Additionally, hiring only sales staff who look and act "trendy" misses the mark when it comes to connecting with the broader demographic of women who should be embraced and celebrated as valued customers. It's too bad, because the clothes themselves are cute - but the experience has become so unpleasant that I will be taking this place off my list of places to shop.

I operate an online vintage designer boutique and had some inventory I didn't turn over that I originally brought to Plato's Closet. l I realized that they are not like the shops in the city and mostly take fast fashion so I was so excited to see Act II only a few miles away. I walked in with my bag of clothes and the owner informed me that she was by appointment only which is fine, I asked to make an appointment. She said she would take a look since I was there. I let her know that not all of the clothes in the bag would be for her but she should take a look as I had some great stuff. She proceeded to pull 2 things out of my bag like they had cooties and exclaimed I DONT TAKE STUFF LIKE THIS I CANT LOOK AT THIS IF THEY WERE FOLDED OR ON HANGERS. I explained to her like I said I was at Plato's so that is how they were put back in the bag. I want to add here the entire corner of her store by the window was full of clothes in bags on the floor. She proceeded to refuse to look through the rest of my items after I told her I had a bunch of Theory, Tanya Taylor, and Frame Jeans. So she wouldn't give me an appointment but wouldn't look at my things as is? I believe she had an idea about me the second I walked into the store based on my appearance. I wasn't aware I would be meeting the queen. I have been working in luxury fashion for the past 6 years and am a collector of vintage designer items and would have been happy to be a customer and possibly a frequent consigner to this store if the owner did not develop such a rude preconceived notion. Although I did not feel inclined to look around judging by the yelp photos of the inside it looks to be a lot of Michael Kors outlet and shoes I can get a better price on at Marshall's so she may have not known Max Mara or Alberta Ferretti of it hit her in the face anyway!

As is true of most thrift shops, you never know what there is to find. There are large selections of record albums, cds and DVDs. Not sure what kind of market there is for them these day. I took a quick look at the albums. One cover was stuck together and there was the pronounced smell of mildew overall. The back room is full of clothes. And in keeping with name of store, there are odds and ends all over. The owner told me business was good. So apparently there are buyers out there. I might stop back in someday, but this trip didn't really do much for me. I wish the owner the very best of luck.

Plato's Closet is very selective on what they select to "buy" from you if you are attempting to…read moresell your clothes. Definitely recommend looking at their instagram or Facebook page on what they are looking for in that current season. Example- they won't take dresses in the winter. You can only bring clothes in bins, reusable bags or laundry baskets. Do not bring it in garbage bags they will not accept it. You can drop off your clothes and show your driver's license and they will text you when they are done "buying." When you return, you can see what they chose to by and how much they would pay. At that point you can accept or deny it. They do give you a coupon to promote shopping at same day which is appreciated. I do understand as they need to make some profit on the items however I wish I was given more. If you are in the area, you can give it a try but I wouldn't make an extra trip here. I have had better luck selling on other websites.

Once I had the chance to do so and to pick up the item, it was not only unrepaired, but was now broken into three segments rather than two. Even if the minor repair was not practical for their abilities/area of expertise, I would have been far better satisfied with a prompt response, and more so, the return of my item in the same condition as it was when dropped off. Instead, I have a further broken item, still in need of repair, not to mention my waiting over a month without my item or so much as any updates. I was hopeful that I would be able to support a local, small business with my patronage, but I will without question stick to the prompt, professional, and capable jewelers found at the Commack Jewelry Exchange, which I have used without any complaints or dissatisfaction for over a decade. Highly suggested that one takes their business elsewhere, especially with an item of substantial monetary or sentimental value!
