Whenever anyone asks for a stylist recommendation, I never, ever hesitate to tell them about Mary at T. After trying out a few other Chicago stylists, I was so thrilled to find her--I've been going to her for the last several years, and she always makes my hair look great. I even trusted her to cut my bangs the day before my pricey new headshots were taken, and they were perfect (she made them look so natural... like they hadn't just been cut)! It was a risky move but I knew I could trust her, because she always understands exactly what I want. She takes her time, too--I've never felt rushed in her chair. This, to me, is the main thing I love about Mary's work: being a starving actor, I can't always afford to get a cut every few months, but her cuts grow out soooooo beautifully that it's never a problem! I've gone 6 months between cuts and my hair has still looked better than it has after 3 months with another stylist. She'll trim up my bangs for free, too: a definite plus. All of the stylists at T. I've been going to T's Salon since moving into the neighborhood, and let me tell you: Tori cuts the best graduated/modern bob in the city! At other salons I have cried after haircuts (I'm super picky when it comes to hair), but Tori makes sure that she's giving you the best cut every time. No tears here, baby! I have had a hard time finding a good colorist in Chicago. I had some decent highlights but if I'm shelling out some big buck, I want it to look amazing and not fade out after 3 weeks. I finally found the best colorist after living here 5 years. I am leaving Chicago in a month and now I wish I would have found Kassi sooner! I went to Kassi last week and she did such an amazing job on my highlights! She took the time to go over what I wanted and the outcome was beautiful! With my hair in desperate need of a cut (I hadn't been to a salon in over a year), I decided to give T Salon and Gallery a call this past winter. The salon was very clean, warm, and welcoming. Tori took the time to talk to me about my hair, how much time I wanted to spend styling it everyday, what she would and would not recommend based on my face shape, my hair's texture, etc. I really appreciated the care she took in explaining what she thought would work best for me and my hair. However, I was a bit underwhelmed once all was said and done, as the finished cut was not really what we had discussed at the start of the appointment. Also, it did not grow out well, which, for me, is the mark of a good hair cut. I would still give T Salon and Gallery another chance, but I would be much firmer about what I wanted. read more

I went here for my first time to get a trim and eye brow wax just a few weeks ago. Loved this small local business and the comfortable feeling within the salon. Kassie did my hair and brows and did a great job. I have very curly hair and a lot of people feel the need to hack it, but she listened to my concerns and did what I was comfortable with. After my cut, I left a very satisfied customer and was very happy I found a quality place so close to my apartment. I received a call a a few weeks after the cut regarding issues with my payment. The owner, Theresa, called me and told me what happened and insisted numerous times that I not pay for the services due to the situation. I've been going to Tori for over 9 years and have had styles from very short to long and always get compliments on my cut and color. I've even had my orthodontist compliment my color several times under the harsh dental lighting! The cuts always grow out very well and whenever I had an issue with a cut or one time wanted an adjustment to my highlights, Tori has fit me in right away and made sure I'm 100% satisfied. She also does a great job cutting my 3 sons' hair. Since Tori has built up a great reputation in Chicago, her regular clients keep her schedule booked out for weeks. My mom was recently in town and needed a cut and color and went to Rand who was able to fit her in within a week. Rand gave her a sleek new style and did an amazing job on her color! I've got really curly hair, and I've never really had a hair cut or hair style I was truly happy with. This resulted in just letting my hair grow long and keeping it in a pony tail most of the time. Well, leading up to my wedding, I decided it was time to getting a "grown-up" hair cut, so I took the recommendations of two of my friends and made an appointment with Teresa. I couldn't have been happier. She patiently listened to how I typcially approached my hair, and gave me a really sharp new style that looks stylish and clean, and a little shorter but without chopping off all my hair or doing anything that would make me not look like myself at my wedding. I love my new style and am glad someone finally showed me that my curls can be tamed! In addition to the great haircut, Teresa is just one of the nicest people I've ever met. She's very warm and friendly, as is all the staff at T. that I've interacted with. Even after just one appointment, they've made me feel like a long-time client. I have been delaying this review for a few months because I have mixed emotions about my experience here. I had read many positive reviews about Ken on Yelp and since I was going for a dramatic change in hair style I was looking for a great stylist who would not disappoint. I had really long hair and was ready to cut it quite short, just under the ears. I brought in a photo of the hairstyle that I wanted and explained exactly what I liked about it: the length, the side sweeping bang and the edgy feel. Ken was very pleasant and though he listened to me, I don't feel the result met my expectations. He asked if it would be ok if he styled it a little differently for today and said that I could get the same beachy/edgy styling result from the picture at home. I agreed to let him style it as he wished, which turned out to be the opposite of edgy, and now I regret it. It was a pretty haircut and I received many compliments on the change, however I was unable to replicate the edgy style from the picture which is what I really wanted. The cut was nothing like what I was expecting. I'm not a pro when it comes to hairstyling but I really tried many different ways, products, etc... and it just never came close. I don't know if I need to blame the cut or my skills but I just wish I had received the style I requested at the salon. At least I could have observed the proper styling technique if that was the issue. Bottom line: Cute salon, friendly staff, but disappointed in my results. When I first moved to Chi 15 years ago, I began getting my hair cut at a salon in Andersonville, where Tori became my stylist. She was always great, such a sweetheart, and my hair liked her too. For various reasons that I can no longer remember, I parted ways. Last year I returned to her, this time at T Salon, which she opened a while ago with one of her colleagues from back in the day. She's still great! Even though my hair is a difficult cut, she takes her time to make sure it's right. And she's very humble, letting me know what she can or can't do and willing to recommend I see someone else if she really feels she can't get the style right...which flashes me back to 2004, when I told her I wanted crayola red and orange hair ("Like Toucan Sam??" she asked incredulously) and she insisted I try somewhere else because that was beyond her expertise. I hate getting my hair cut for several reasons: 1. Despite me usually talking nonstop, I somehow find it impossible to keep the conversation going with a stylist and, therefore, end up feeling uncomfortable. 2. I usually end up disliking my haircut and need it to grow out for a few weeks before I begin to like it (hence, I usually only go once every 4 or 5 months). 3. I don't like to pay a lot of money for things I don't really really like. 4. I don't spend a lot of time "beautifying" myself, so I often feel generally uncomfortable in any type of salon environment. So after 5 months of my hair growing out, I decided it was time to bite the bullet and go in for a trim. I saw Teresa on Monday afternoon. From the minute I walked in the door, I felt welcomed and relaxed. The salon is nice but not pretentious. Everyone there was beyond friendly. Teresa was so personable and easy to talk to - we gabbed the entire time, which was a lot of time because she spent a good deal of time on my hair despite it just being a trim. When she asked what I wanted, she asked follow-up questions to clarify exactly what I wanted (like how much hair I wanted off for a trim which was nice since everyone means something different when they say "trim"). And she offered additional suggestions (like thinning it out which I love having done but not everyone does it). The minute she finished my cut, I loved it. I am able to (for the most part) reproduce the style at home. The cut was $55. I think this goes without saying, but it included a shampoo and blowdry. I appreciated how after she blowdryed my hair, she went back in with the scissors and cleaned it up (not everyone does this which has resulted in my trying to "fix" my haircut at home with disastrous results). I am glad to say that I finally found a stylist that I want to return to. As a side note - there's tons of public transportation around here - the Damen and Lawrence buses as well as the Brown Line are very convenient. There's also street parking, which didn't seem too packed when I was there. read more

Best hair cuts I've had in Chicago. Teresa is amazing. Hands down. Warm, welcoming, trust me you'll meet her and be glad that she's a part of your life. She also understands my hair. It's fine, but there's a lot of it. I got a funky cow-lick. I don't blow-dry it unless I'm going to work. I'm going gray early. But people always compliment my hair, even when I forget to brush it. I was in the hospital once, and my friend said, "Well, I'm sorry you're sick, but your hair color looks amazing." Can't beat that. read more

Kassi is my girl! My husband won't let me go to anyone else so when Kassi left Lather, I followed. I have been to salon after salon and stylist after stylist for a good 15 years. I was not unloyal but I had a difficult time trying to find someone who could do more than a nice cut. It had to work for my head and face as well as my maintenance level. Ever since I came home from seeing Kassi the first time and my husband exclaimed, "That's it! Don't change it and don't go see anyone else," I have become loyal to only one stylist. Kassi cares, she listens and she is talented on so many levels. If you are disappointed after this review, you are just hard to please. As for T. Salon & Gallery, I have only been here once so far but I really like the cozy, artsy, ecclectic feel of the salon. Since I was there on a Sunday at the end of the day, Kassi was the only one there and it was relaxing and quiet. Not sure how loud it is on a Saturday nor how the other staff is with eachother and clients. The product selection is small but they have familiar and reliable product lines. If you want a fussy high-class celebrity-like salon, go somewhere else. If you want a place that feels local, lived in, artsy and familar this is the place for you. read more

Rand is a color genius! I was looking for a big change--going from a blond to a dark brown/red including a new edgier cut. I walked around the corner from my place to T. Salon and made an appointment with Rand. There was a long complicated process bringing my highlighted blond down several shades, but Rand worked some kind of magic. He was able to turn my straw-like damaged locks into shiny dark RICH color. (He even threw in a special treatment during the shampoo on the house because he thought it'd look nice.) I have been getting compliments all week! I also loved the friendly atmosphere where the staff had fun bickering back and forth and customers played with the cutest little chihuahua puppy ever! It was a nice change from the colder big professional salons I'd been to in the past. Overall, I think I've found my new go-to place. read more

I've had a terrible time finding hair stylists in Chicago. When my last one (whom I liked pretty well) moved in February, I was in total despair. After a near-miss or two, I found T. Salon through yelp. Kassi is fabulous--very sweet and down-to-earth. After we consulted for a bit, she made a change to my color as requested that turned out beautifully. She also, very tactfully, let me know that my cut needed a bit of a change (more layers in the back). Two weeks later and I've received at least a dozen compliments on the new style. First time at this salon this week. Went after a recommendation from a good friend. I walked in with really awful hair - bad color and a boring cut (the former stylist issue). Not feeling particularly good about my overall appearance. Rand spent three hours with me. I left the salon feeling amazing, with a great cut, great color and hair that worked. Best of all, I washed it for the first time today. A little gel, and some air drying, I was good to go, even though my hair is jaw length. Amazing. Highly, Highly recommend it. I NEED the best possible hair color and style that i can get. I am a performer and the hot lights from the stage show everything. From being on tour I've had my hair done all over the world and have spent a fortune on the entire Oak St expensive hair salon strip in Chicago and its equivalent in NY. I have found that not every salon or hairdresser, regardless of price or reputation can be trusted to be good, expert. It is all about the talent and desire of the hair stylist, the experience and the care on his/her part to get it right every time and the level of expertise put in place by the owners of the salon. After many years of wasted money and dry, too-black hair, i found Teresa and T - Salon. Teresa cares for hair the way it should be done. She works with your hair to make sure that it is healthy and shiny even as she works on your more immediate concerns. (the concert, the dinner, the event) This is important. I believe any hair stylist can make your hair look pretty good for an evening but at what price on your hair? The real question should be can a hair stylist make your hair look good everyday. For performers, the show is important, and life counts too. T - Salon is consistent -- all the stylists are good, they consult and cover with and for each other should the need arise (oh no! a surprise guest! audience member!?) They are also honest if you ask them to be and this is rare. They will come in early or stay late if you have a very special event. So!! If you NEED your hair to look great for an occasion or just want your hair to be healthy and look good in general, save on the Oak St parking and come to T-Salon. I moved to Chicago a year ago and was putting off getting my hair chopped, despite it desperately needing a trim. I finally snapped out of it and booked an appointment with Christian at T-salon. I am from France and know how much training you need to get your hairdresser degree there which is why Christian was the perfect choice for me since he is French too. I asked him for a slightly angled bob, cutting off half of the length of my hair in the process. Since it was a major change for me a lot of my friends/family members definitely noticed and they all loved it! More importantly though, I love it too! And now that I've lived with it for a few weeks I am still in love with it. I highly recommend Christian and in fact will be back there myself in a few weeks despite living on the other side of the city. read more

I love this place!! Several stylists have done my cut, color and up-do. I have never had a bad experience here. Currently Rand is doing my cut and color once per month and I am thrilled with the result. He is fast but so meticulous that I never have that tell tale line across my forehead after a root touch up.....I can go out that very night. Rand also recently gave me a keratin relaxer and that, too, was a great experience. I am normally a person who dreads going to the salon but I actually look forward to my time here. It's like hanging out with a bunch of friends. Everyone is always happy and chatty...and funny. My 10 year old son has even gotten into the act. Tori did his hair recently and he said it was, "Fun." The salon itself is spotless, cheerful and relaxing. I love the artwork they have up from local artists. I feel like the stylists go out of their way to make all of their clients really comfortable. I waited a week to write this, thinking that maybe I was overreacting. I'll post photos that speak for themselves, but I will say that the nuance of a haircut is just totally lost on the stylist who cut my hair. I showed her numerous photos of what I was looking for, from multiple angles, described in great detail what I wanted and didn't want, and the cut I received was severe and not at all like what I had requested. It's a good six inches shorter than what I had shown her (which is a lot given that I was requesting a relatively short cut to begin with--the longest portion by a long shot is currently only up to my EARS, and the back is practically shaved). The proportions are way off as well, besides the length being insanely short. It is not a feminine cut. It is not a fashionable cut. It is not even an "edgy" cut which is the best that I could have hoped for from it. It's crazy. It will take years to grow out and remedy. People have said, "I'm sorry," "It's not that bad," "It will grow out," and "That look is 1920's butch." I cried for the first two days and now am mostly just angry. I will say that the stylist was gracious and seemed like a nice person, but I would not recommend getting your hair cut here for anyone who cares about the outcome. read more

I moved to Chicago about 5 months ago, and I was biting my nails over where to go for a good color and cut. After reading the reviews here, I decided to give T. Salon a chance. I called in on a Tuesday and got an appointment for the next day. Liz was my stylist, and she did a great job! Some people are incredibly specific with the style and color they want, but I'm the opposite kind of problem for a stylist. I basically went in and told her I wanted a neutral, even color and about 3 inches off. Everything else, ie the specifics on the coloring/cut, I left up to her. She was incredibly capable, and offered up a bunch of options and ideas immediately. I let her do what she thought would be best, and I love the result. After she cut my bangs, she asked how I liked the cut. I said it was good, and she immediately said she sense some reservation and asked what she could fix. I had her alter my bangs a little more, and she did exactly what I was looking for. I was very impressed by how intuitive and willing to make the haircut perfect for me she was! The salon atmosphere is awesome. Everyone is really nice, and this is one of the VERY FEW places I've ever had my hair done where I didn't feel like talking with my stylist was awkward or forced. Liz was very easy to talk to and just generally seemed like a really cool person. The other women working at the time all seemed equally likable and friendly. I'm going to recommend T. Tori has been my curl wrangler since 2004 and she's the best in the business in my humble (but grateful!) opinion. Her color game is spot on and I always leave the salon feeling like life just hit the reset button. Both Mary and Kassi have done my eyebrows and they're both great! Teresa has been cutting my hair for years. She always asks me how my last cut was and what I want this time. At the end of the cut, she always checks in to make sure that I am happy with the result. She also always tells me that if have any changes I want, to come back. I never have had to, but it's nice to know that the offer exists. Teresa is extremely friendly and very concerned that her clients are happy and satisfied. In addition to being a great sytlist, she is also active in the community and quite simply a great person. I have one comment to anyone who wasn't happy. Please own up to your own responsibility. It is up to you to tell someone that you were not happy and at least give them the opportunity to fix the issue. Sorry to butt my nose in here, but as a local business owner, I know that I would welcome the opportunity to receive constructive criticism. However, I feel blindsided when someone is unhappy and anonymously reviews my business without giving me the opportunity to address their issue. read more

There is only one reason i ended up at this salon for a cut...following my stylist, Ken. The salon isn't hard to find, and street parking is always pretty easy. However, for a spot right on Damen, you will have to pay at those stupid meters. That's not the fault of the salon, of course... It is a small salon with a friendly feel to it, and artwork for sale on the walls. Nothing loud, obnoxious, or uncomfortable about it at all. In general, it is what I want a salon to be. Comfortable, welcoming, easy street parking, easy to find. The reason for going though, in all honesty, is simply because the one person I trust with my hair works there. Frankly, I am no style genius. I will never work miracles with a hairdryer, and the vast array of styling products on the market today is dizzying to me. This is why I needed someone who can style my hair into something cute, but low maintenance. No real need for a multitude of appliances and products to whip it into something presentable. Ken does just that. He has cut my hair a number of times now. I originally found him working at another salon, and love what he does so much that I followed him to his new location when he changed salons. Sometimes I know what I'm looking for, sometimes I just know I need to do something with my hair. He has done colors, cuts, and even simple blow drys for me...I've always been happy with the results. He takes the time to consider the texture of my hair, my coloring, and my face shape before making any drastic changes. He is easy to talk to, and makes sure that if he is tweaking my style a bit, that he explains to me a couple of ways I can work with it on my own. That is EXTREMELY helpful for someone like me. I don't want to spend hours trying to figure out how to make my hair look reasonably decent. I want my hair to look fantastic..like most women. Between what Ken does with the hair, and then the mini education after finishing, I now have what I always envied about other women...hair I LOVE. read more
