You will probably arrive to see all tables are taken. There is a reason for this. Give your name to the waiter and he'll chalk you up, and you can loiter, or if you know what's good for you, prop up the bar inside and have a beer or a sherry whilst you decide what to eat. We were fourth on the board and were seated within thirty minutes on a Thursday afternoon, to give you an idea. These were the best tapas of our trip, and the cheapest, so go figure. Well worth a ten minute walk from the cathedral. Not only was the food delicious and light, the service was charming and rapid. The quail eggs and chorizo are especially good, when we go back later we will go for a bigger portion, but it's all good; fried battered courgette, fried cuttlefish, spinach croquettes, duck pate... six tapas and drinks for €21. Insane value, brilliant atmosphere (not touristy) and delicious. read more

It's not easy to get it, we looked around and finally found it in a corner 2. we arrived at around 13.00 pm, but staff told us the kitchen was closed and we needed to wait at least 30 minutes, which was actually 40 minutes. 3. tapas taste average, we ordered eggplant with honey, chicken with almond sauce, pork in whisky sauce, quil eggs in red sauce ( they gave us a wrong dish), Spanish omelet with shrimp. This place is actually decent. Not the best, certainly not the worst. I'm too tired from writing my last review to say but but id say, avoid the stuffed eggplant and the chicken. The quail egg and ham on the little bread pieces were yummy. And the marinated octopus hit the spot as well. Would I eat here, maybe. But I wouldn't run back to have this place again. And if I did, no chicken or eggplant. But I'll take some more octopus and quail egg and meat. read more

This is a great place for tapas. When we arrived the place was buzzing and full, the staff put our names up on a blackboard and we got a drink while we waited for a table. When we were ordering the waiter commented that we must be very hungry, he recommended we stop ordering and see how we get on with what we ordered so far. Well he was absolutely right, the tapas were very generous and he brought down a free plate for us too. The quality of the food was good and the servings large. Taberna Coloniales has a great atmosphere and seems very popular with locals as well as tourists. We got to Terberna Coloniales fairly early (8:00 pm) and many of the tables were full. Until we left, tourists were coming in droves and getting their names on a wait list. Be prepared to wait. We had a tapas of pulpo (octopus) with peppers and onions in olive oil. Very tasty! I had the pluma iberica (so-so) and my husband had huevos con jamon y champignons . Also okay. Maybe it was our choices but nothing to write home about. The waiter was excellent and served everyone with panache! For a tapas bar, pretty good place. read more

For the price of the tapas, it's definitely value for your money. We're in our mid 20s and we ordered about 5-6 dishes including the almond chicken, eggplant, spinach croquettes, quail eggs and chorizo, and chicken (bacon and cheese). Portions are 2-3 pcs per order but well prepared. Chicken is a bit dry but for 2.90€ it's totally worth it. Definitely recommended. It does get really busy after 9pm and they offer reservations on a chalk board outside or dining at the inside bar. Have fun and enjoy !! Ps. This place was recommended to me by my hostel. It was really close to me so went there to grab a quick lunch. Loved loved it. Staff was sooo friendly even though I spoke no Spanish. The food was so yummy. Could see it was mostly locals which is a good sign, good atmosphere, it was also a little away from the normal tourist places. I had one of their tapa special of the day (cod Fish) and quail eggs with jamon. Go go go!!! read more

HUGE tapas with reasonable prices. It can get very crowded on weekends, so try to come before the normal Spanish eating time (8pm would be perfect). We went twice during our 5-day stay, that's how much our group liked this restaurant. It was packed every time. The food was phenomenal, the sauces were finger-licking good, but above all - the service is impeccable. We went with two kids and the waiters were extremely patient and kind. The service here is just excellent! They have outdoor seating, if you see an empty table, grab it and don't wait for a server to seat you! Prices are affordable. Cervezas starts at €1.20. Had the pate de pato (€3.55), 1/2 racion of pulpo (€6.20), and €0.60 bread is charged even if you don't order it. It is self-service from mid-afternoon to 830pm. You order at the bar, and they call you when your food is ready for pickup from a little window. read more

There was a wait for tables when I showed up -- certainly a good sign. And luckily they had room at the bar which has always resulted in good treatment for me. The servers might be insanely rushed and zipping around but don't take it as them being inhospitable; I was just recovering from spitting out my order when a complimentary glass of sherry was slung at me. Two of my favorites were the pate and cheese frittery things with peppers in them. AMAZING prices!! A local hot spot that's worth the long waits. If you get there before 8 you shouldn't have a problem, they start serving around 8:40. A little cervezita or a tinto de verano along with authentic tapas - what more could you ask for? The manjar blanco, the various solomillos, croquetas, salmorejo, ensaladas... todo! - it is all spectacular. In Spain the service, although usually speedy, is not always so friendly - presumably because there isn't really a tipping culture. Here, however, the waiters and guys behind the bar are helpful and entertaining and this adds to the over-all experience. Great food and great service! Don't think about it, just go get a table and enjoy the food and atmosphere. We had chicken and almond sauce, eggplant with salmarejo, salad with goat cheese, cheeses, beef with whiskey sauce, beef with Roquefort sauce, mushroom croquettes and a couple bottles of wine. October 13, 2014 - this is a Spanish Holiday..80% of the restaurants are closed...but not Taberna Coloniales. It is the evening, and raining a little, but the outside terrace is covered...and crowded, so we go inside. We're lucky, and find a place at the counter, in front of the wine chiller. So we order a glass of wine...very good for the price (I think 2.80 E). Then we order the food...just a few tapas, but extremely fresh, good, and served promptly. We were obviously served by the manager or the owner...this place is running like clockwork...the staff is efficient and polite. A very positive experience that I would repeat anytime. When we left, there were 2 rows of people waiting behind us for our spot. I didn't use Yelp! to find this spot...it was just a pleasant holiday surprise. read more
