I have been coming here for 10 years and it is without exaggeration the best place to eat in Richmond. It is authentic Thai food that you'd be more likely to expect out of Louisville or Cincinnati, not Richmond. I recommend the Thai Iced Tea if you're a typical sweet tea drinker and literally anything off the menu (there's variable spice for every dish). I typically remove the veggies and add egg in my Pad Kee Mao (so you get more noodles) and it covers one big meal or a lighter lunch and dinner. read more

I am clearly a creature of habit, a year to the day, I walked into Thai Smile and had Pad Kee Mow 2 at the level of spicy! Amazing perfectly cooked noodles, great thin sliced chicken, well cooked veggies. You now order at the counter and they will bring your food to you, to go or eat in. I ate in today and it was great. I seated myself at a small table and my food was out in minutes. If you need anything you can check at the counter and they will get you what you need. I will be back! My friend Grizz had never experienced Thai food, and Thai Smile seemed like a logical place to start. This place offers classic Thai cuisine, from curries to noodle dishes, in a relaxed eatery decorated with Asian accents. We started with Crab Rangoon, fried pastry, crab meat, cream cheese, Scallion, and celery. The wonton wrapper had a good fry, but it was chewy. The filling was creamy, flavorful, and slightly sweet with a touch of salt. It was served with sweet Thai chili dipping sauce. Next, we went with Gyoza, a deep-fried chicken dumpling. It had a great fry on the dumpling. It was crispy yet tender, and the chicken had great seasoning. The dumpling sauce was sweet with a little tang. I sampled Siamese Beef Soup, made with sliced beef in a spicy broth. Surprisingly, it had a sweet broth. The meat was tough and lacked flavor. The onions were crunchy, and cilantro added freshness. I ordered Volcano Chicken, medium, made with fried chicken breast topped with bell pepper, Broccoli, and spicy garlic sauce. The chicken was fried perfectly, tender inside with a great crunch. The veggies were crunchy and added texture. The garlic pan sauce has great flavor but is very sweet. The rice was cooked well. Grizz tried the Mongolian Barbecue, which came with beef stir fry with pineapple, onion, bell peppers, and tomatoes in a sweet & sour sauce. The meat, chicken, and shrimp were tough and lacked flavor. The pineapple was overpowering and very sweet. The dish was ordered as a medium spice, but he could not taste any spice. The veggies were cooked to a good snap and crunch. The rice helped tamp down some of the sweetness. We also sampled the Red Curry with sliced chicken, bamboo shoots, bell pepper, and basil cooked in a red curry coconut milk sauce. The sauce was creamy with a nice light heat note and a little sweetness. The chicken is slightly overcooked and tough but has good flavor. The veggies still have a little crunch and added texture. Thai Smile offers an extensive menu. You can get your food as mild or as spicy as you want. The staff is exceptionally friendly and helpful. The Fat Man says that Thai Smile is Fat Man Approved with 1 chin. read more

I'm not sure if this is the same people that had a Thai Smile (now Thai Noodles) on Preston Hwy in Jefferson County or not but from memory they seem to be very similar. I had the Pad Thai which was pretty good and came in a bigger portion than I expected. I asked for a level 4, out of 5, spice level. If you want your food to be spicy go for the level 5, my food almost had a bit of a sweet flavor to it. This is one thing that makes me suspect this place is related to the old Jefferson County Thai Smile is that the food wasn't as spicy as one would expect. It was good and I'll go again when I'm in town but I wasn't super thrilled with my experience. Also, if you dine in you have to purchase bottle water, apparently they don't serve ice water. read more

Food was fine and portions large. No real service as you order from the counter and it is brought to you. Although I did enjoy the food I will not go back again unless I order take out and that is doubtful because the takeout containers are styrofoam. The dinning room is a crowded area with storage boxes everywhere. Absolutely no ambiance whatsoever. I remember going to this restaurant years ago and it was lovely. Whenever you are hungry for authentic Thai food, Thai Smile is the only place to go! There are two locations including Richmond and Frankfort. This Thai is so good that my boss would drive from Louisville to Frankfort just to be able to have good Thai food. There simply is no comparison anywhere else! I continually switch between their Chicken Fried Rice, Three Flavor Chicken, or the Dry Egg Noodle Bowl. It's just difficult to decide between three delicious meals. The Chicken Fried Rice is a generous serving of fried rice with egg and plenty of chicken (or your favorite meat). For something different, try the Pineapple Fried Rice (with your favorite meat). The Three Flavor Chicken is a huge serving of fried chicken with snow peas, broccoli, carrot, tomatoes and pineapple in three-flavored sauce (includes steamed or fried rice). Personally, I order mine with no tomato, but others enjoy it being included. My other favorite is the Dry Egg Noodle Bowl which is filled with steamed egg noodles tossed with bean sprouts and sweet soy sauced topped with fried chicken breast and then garnished cilantro and ground peanuts. There is always a generous amount of the sweet soy sauce, so I mix some of my wife's leftover rice in the bowl and have enough for 2 meals. Of course, there are plenty of other items to select from their vast menu. They have a great selection of soups. My favorite is either the Siamese Beef Soup (Sliced beef in a spicy robust broth) or the Soupy Noodle (Rice noodle, chicken and bean sprouts in chicken broth). Of course, these meals are never complete without ordering an egg roll, or the crispy egg roll. And everyone knows to order their Crab Rangoon for a tasty dessert! read more

Absolutely the worst Thai food we have ever had. Yhai food DOES NOT use sugar in the food. It was loaded with sugar. I couldn't even taste Curry. Thai Smile has great reviews, so I added my order when co-workers decided to order lunch today. I chose Kung Fu Chicken thinking it would be similar to Sesame Chicken based on the online description and pic (I've added a screen shot and a picture of the dish I got). What I got was a breaded chicken patty cut into pieces swimming in sauce with some overcooked frozen broccoli and carrots. The sauce tasted more like bbq than anything else. The fried rice was okay but the spring rolls were tough, dry and had very little filling. This was my first time eating at this restaurant and I hope I just made a bad choice, but I don't think I'll return. If you decide to go I would say skip the Kung Fu Chicken for sure. read more

Walking in, it looks nice. The menu is different, which caused me a lot of stress. My favorite item, the chicken cakes, are now gone. The waitstaff, despite having the ingredients to make you something you ask for, will not do specialty dishes no matter how small they are. I just wanted noodles and crab. When a waiter found out they hadn't made the specialty order, they came to ask how we were doing and if we were okay and proceeded to tell us that the staff made them cry and that they were very disrespectful. Personally, I don't want to spend my money where the staff treats the waitstaff horribly. My husband knows what it's like to be treated like that. It's gone downhill since it opened back up. The food is also much different than it once was. Pad thai was overwhelmingly sweet. The noodles were drier than the Sahara Desert. Definitely under a heat lamp. They had no clue how spicy I wanted it when I said "very hot." That has always been the way I ordered it. Treat your staff better. read more

Thai Smile offers some decent Thai food in Richmond. I have been coming here on and off for several years but hadn't been in for a long time until yesterday. The restaurant is nice inside with a small seating room and order at the counter kind of service. I tried the beef salad and green curry. Both were good. I enjoy a soupy curry and that's just what this one was. Price of each entree is around $10.95 and serving sizes are pretty big. Especially if you order a noodle dish, expect to get a large plate filled with noodles. My husband loves the pad see ew. Definitely recommend! read more

I love this place. They keep strange hours and take yearly out of country trips where they close for weeks at a time but when I'm passing through town I always check and see if they're open. Thai Smile is an establishment tucked away on a frontage road off the Eastern Bypass, halfway between I-64 and the turn-off to Eastern Kentucky University. It's part of a small strip mall. It may be hard to see from the main road, but nonetheless, it's a great place to grab lunch or dinner. Because they have split hours, you should arrive no later than 1:00 p.m. if you want lunch; or you could come by at 5:00 p.m. when dinner is served. I've been here a couple times with a considerable lengthy time between them. This review is based on my second visit - an unapologetic day-off with a friend stopping through Richmond restaurants and shops. We finished a round of drinks at Paddy Wagon, noticed it was dinner time, and stopped by Thai Smile on the way back home. Thai Smile occupies a small storefront, but there's quite a bit of room for seating packed in here. The layout is weird. You should pick up and peruse a menu near the front door, then walk up to the counter to place an order. Water and bottled beverages are in a nearby refrigerator. You pay for your order when you make it, and a food runner brings your meal to your table; there is no wait staff. It's also slightly cramped. Thus, it's a no-frills stuff-your-face experience with little attention paid to ambiance. I had a beef Pad Thai; my friend had Pad Woon See (a veggie-dominant stir fry on rice noodles). The menu gives you five spice options (1 = mild; 5 = your soul is on fire, my guess). I like some spice; the guy at the counter urged me to try a level 3 (hot) and coaxed "it's not that bad." The food came out with Usain Bolt quickness; we were pleasantly surprised. Unlike other Thai places, my Pad Thai came out plain -- noodles, fish sauce, meat, egg, with a side of crushed peanuts. I would have appreciated a little bit more green on the plate, maybe some green onion. That said, indeed, the spice was just enough to give it a little kick and I devoured it. The portions are also huge. I ended up finishing my plate, and my friend took easily half of hers home. Since we were stuffed, we didn't try dessert. I crave Thai on occasion, and I would come back for a specific Pad Thai fix. Again, you won't come here if you want to be romanced by decor and music. Just sit down, shut up, and stuff your face. Second time here, first time eating. This is a fairly small place inside, not much decor just a very simple place to grab a bite to eat. The menu is basically on the wall but they also have a menu you can look at near the register which is where you order your food. They have a scale of 1-5 on how hot you would like your dish to be on a spicy scale. I ordered the Chicken Pad Thai on a 4 with an egg roll. Presentation on the dish was good but as far as flavor goes I really wasnt impressed. Their spicy scale to me was extremely weak, I felt like I was eating my food on a 1 scale. Noodles seemed a bit gooey but the egg roll was very nice and crispy. I dont think I'll be visiting this place again anytime in the near future. Anyone giving this place less than 5 either haven't had real Thai food or don't have a clear understanding of Thai food. Don't let the outside of the building deter you from entering and enjoying the service and food. The interior is small but exceptionally clean. The restrooms are so clean you'll think you've opened the door to the TARDIS and entered another world. The food is what will hook you. True Taiwanese dishes and flavors. The portion size is more than filling but not "American standard make-you-fatter" sized. They even have tofu to substitute in all their platters; for vegans like me. And they allow you to pick how spicy you want the dish. With prices to rival Wendy's and McDonald's, there are no negatives here. If you find yourself in, or driving through, Richmond stop here for a meal. You will not be disappointed. read more
