So now I'm back in Connecticut, in a different town, and dealing with different things. Enjoyed an evening at Tablao, an easy walk from SoNo train station. We had a great table by the window. The waitperson was gracious. Our group met to discuss an important matter so we were a bit slow ordering. Our food was fantastic. I especially enjoyed my Paella And another diner loved the Brussels Sprout Salad with truffle vinaigrette, and the Beet Salad. My other companion thought the grilled octopus was special. I would say not a particularly young or old place, somewhere in the middle. GREAT wine selection list with very large selection of *California* wines (the best!) :) I ended up still getting a cocktail though for which they also have a (smaller) menu. The one I chose was Bee's Knees (bit pricey at $14 but in line with other bars) made of Bar Hill Tom Cat Gin, honey syrup, lemon and basil, and it tasted really nice. Although I drank it very slowly haha as I was so busy talking. The one thing to beware of for this place though is that around 10pm or so when we were there they started blasting wayyy too loud Latin dance music, essentially leading all the current patrons including us to leave/escape. They might be doing that because they transform into a nightclub later, and wanted to attract the dancing clientele? Who else does happy hour every day of the week? Went on a Saturday around 5:20 and it was already pretty packed. Snagged a seat at the bar and had a very friendly bartender. Ordered 4 items off of the tapas menu -gambas a la plancha, short rib, hanger steak and mixed empanadas - and we very happy. I don't normally eat shrimp out but the gambas a la plancha were amazing. Hummmm, where to start ? Well let me start with the good and that's the reason they got 3 stars .. The Food : we had the beef medallions , the Bacalao croquettes and the scallops special . The food was amazing , the presentation was nice and the food tasted good . The Decor : really cute and cozy place !! Now to the BAD part .. or should I say THE REAL BAD PART ?! We go in and the host who was also the bartender and the waiter greets us , we decided to seat at the bar as we usually do. From the moment we arrived the hist who's name is Andres was busy looking at his phone . So we sit at the bar and wait for him to come and serve us ( just keep in mind we were the first ones there at 12:30) so is not if he was super busy helping others . We had to wait like 10 minutes while he was at the other end of the bar playing with his phone , so we call him for drinks and some tapas . He serves us our drinks and goes back to the other end of the bar where he continues to be on his phone . We than have to call him again to tell him about our additional order . After that he couldn't be found for about another 20 minutes or so and the kitchen people are the ones who served us our food . I than needed another drink and once again Andres was still on his phone but at the front on the place at the host desk , we called him but he was so busy in the phone he either didn't hear us or ignored us , so the lady who came from the kitchen is the one who served me a second drink . Ok .. we sat there till about 2:30-2:45 pm and the ENTIRE time he was in his phone . I needed another drink and guess who served me that again ?? The kitchen lady . We even had to ask her for the check and she had to go looking for him because she didn't know how to do it . I think her Dept is the kitchen . (Very kind lady ) . My point here is : if you Hanna be playing on your phone all day and not pay attention to people than please just stay home . It's ridiculous to have to chase people to serve you . If I could star rate by. Category than this service would have certainly been a ZERO star . Last but not least the bathroom : wasn't really that clean either and they had just opened for lunch . This is my husband and I's favorite restaurant when we visit CT. My husband's from Greenwich and when we were just dating, we would come here. We came back with our daughter and our two friends because we rave about this spot. We were greeted by their very friendly staff and seated right away. Once we got seated, the waiter took our drink orders fast as well- it was perfect because we already knew we wanted the sangria -- MUST have! We had seen an ad that Tablao had paella for two, including a pitcher of sangria, one tapas per person, choice iof paella and a dessert for the table. All for $85. Now it has beenn there in SoNo for a long time and we have eaten at many places on the street but never here til tonight. This is surprising because we live Spanish food, especially tapas and paella. We originally were going to be 5 people but because if an illness it was 2. Changing the reservation was no problem. There are multiple parking lots in the SoNo area which costs $3.25 for 2 hrs. We were seated promptly and they took our drink order quickly. We ordered a pitcher of red sangria. Our tapas were loin lamb chops with mashed potatoes and pulpo (octopus) with fingerling potatoes, and our paella was paella Negra The sangria was ok. I like more of the wine to come thru and this was sweeter than we prefer. The octopus and potatoes were cooked perfectly but no flavor/seasoning. More olive oil and paprika would have really made it better. The lamb chops also bland and lacking anything memorable. The paella had clams, shrimp, fish, scallops but once again was bland. The seafood was ok. We tried the lemon tart for dessert and it needed whipped cream for sweetness to balance the sour of the lemon. I wonder if the special overwhelmed them and the kitchen rushed things. But three stars is a fair rating for our experience. I think this is a sort of fun place, but be ready for a very expensive meal for what you get. I am fully aware of pricing going up these days. We went at 6pm on a Friday to beat the rush, glad we did, as it was packed when we left! Smelled a little of disinfectant or something when we arrived, not super pleasant. Service to get a drink was pleasant, if a tad slow. Given there were only a few tables, 5 min to get the beer seems long. Or server was very nice. Anyway, we did Tapas, not entrees. I had the Grilled Calamari and the eggplant tapas. My wife had grilled vegetables and a shrimp dish. The eggplant came out first. It was "ok", but very little interesting flavor. And something inside was still chilled, I think the mozz. Just meh. And very bland flavor. My grilled calamari was very good. Nicely charred tentacles and full bodies with a good sauce. So my side of the table was a solid B. The grilled vegetables were not any different than getting a microwaved bag of Green Giant from the store. Zero flavoring and $11 for a small plate. This was a huge disappointment. Her shrimp dish was good. Again, to me nothing that says "wow", but perfectly edible. The bread served at the table was awful. Hard, no flavor at all. Ick. Wine prices by the glass are insane (13-15?). Had a nice German Pilsner Dessert was the Tres Leche cake. Fine enough, bit again nothing to knock your socks off. $92 w tax and tip. 4.5 stars. What an incredible find at Norwalk! Came here as a walk-in from Stamford with a group of 5 for a New Years Eve dinner at ~600pm. Restaurant was quite lively as there were quite a few tables that were full. We didn't had too much of an issue to be seated since the hostess and the owner allowed us to take a reserved table as long as we gave the table back to them by 750pm for another party. Ordered 2 glasses of sangria, 5 tapas, and a paella at a 3 person portion. Total bill came around ~$144. Definitely worth your value compared to Spanish restaurants in NYC! We got: classic paella, pulpo (octopus), pork medallions, short ribs, sauteed spinach, portobello mushrooms, and 2 glasses of sangrias. AMBIANCE: Very lively, dimly lit. Restaurant had a rustic feel to it. Tablao was quite packed when we came in and when we left there were people lining up to get seated. PROS: Favorite tapas have got to be the pork medallions and the braised short ribs. Those were incredibly tender and flavorful! The medallions rest on a piece of bread with a layer of cheese on top, which made the overall experience very decadent. Shorts ribs were incredibly moist, tender, and seasoned to perfection. Could eat that all day everyday. Our table was also decently surprised by our veggie tapas that we got. The portobello mushroom came on top of a bed of asparagus, which gave the tapas a nice added crunch to the creaminess and umami of the portobello mushroom. Sauteed spinach had a orange-ish (can't pin down what ingredients they used in it) cream to it which paired incredibly well with the complimentary bread they served us. Star of the show has got to be the Paella!! There was soooo much seafood and meats in the paella that each bite you had a bit of meat in it! Rice was cooked al dente like what you're supposed to get in Spain. Seasoned incredibly well as you can taste out the saffron in the rice. The shrimp (gambas) on the paella were also charred very nicely and added a whole new depth and dimension of flavor to the experience as well! NEUTRAL: Red sangrias came out rather sweet, and it tasted more so like fruit juice than red wine. I think this is a personal preference, but I know some of my friends and family members prefer a more bitter/ more red wine in their sangria. CONS: Pulpo (octopus) was cooked kind of dry and was lacking in dimensionality in flavor. I think its a hard dish to pull off to cook a well balanced and tasty octopus dish, so I wouldn't be too harsh on Tablao for that. OVERALL: Incredible experience at Tablao especially their short ribs, pork medallions, and classic paella. We were royally stuffed, and for that price we got it was definitely worth it! Would order a few different items next time we go, but definitely worth the stop by if you're ever at Norwalk! read more

A friend and I shared their $70 paella Thursday day which comes with a pitcher of sangria (dangerously tasty), two tapas, a paella of your choice (I recommend the classic - it's perfect), as well as a dessert to top off the night perfectly! The flavors are authentically delicate, each bite of the paella melted in my mouth. There is an unexpected crunch to the seafood that is to die for! The lamb tapa we shared was perfectly cooked at medium rare, and the gnocchi tapa was served in the complexity of the home made sauce. Be prepared to leave DRUNK - you're welcome! The crab cake barely had any flavor most of the flavor was in the sauce. The grilled skirt steak was actually good. For main entree I had the seafood linguine which was ok the seafood was fresh but wish it had more flavor to it rather than mix with the wine sauce and pasta.
