I haven't been here in 20 years and it's as good as I remember! We called a few days ahead to reserve our dough, because they only make a certain number of pizzas a day. You can call at 10 am but they don't open until 4. You can't leave a voice mail to order or reserve dough. You have to speak to a person, which is how they like it. There are no computers, everything is done by hand. They serve only fountain soda and pizza. You can BYOB or bring in dessert. Lots of people were doing that. They are a cash only business so go prepared. There is a free parking lot on the corner labeled for Tacconelli's customers. City parking is always appreciated! You do have to walk about 1/2 a block up to get to the restaurant. Tacconelli's is in the middle of a block of row homes. The business sits under the Taconelli's family home who are 5 generations of bakers! Giovanni Taconelli is so welcoming and friendly. He is a proud one man, one oven shop, it says so on their menu. He makes every single pizza. He also allows you to come into the kitchen to watch him make your pizza in their unique oven. The pizza is super thin and light. Its so light that you can only have two toppings. You also probably eat more slices than usual so plan for that. We had the margarita pizza. Fresh mozzarella, sauce and basil. There are no prices on the menu but that was $25 a pie. It was so airy and not like any other pizza. The edges are chard to perfection. I loved cheese to sauce ratio and the basil was fresh. I brought some home and just ate a slice cold. It was equally delicious! All of the employees were very friendly. Our waitress had been there for 18 years! My favorite was the pepperoni with hot and honey. The slight kick with a tad bit of sweetness went well with the pepperoni. The rest of my party loved the sausage and onion pizza most. We would pass on the plain mushroom because it was dry. Our server recommended half the pie to have mushroom and tomatoes which was much better! The crush tomatoes gave the pizza some moisture. Jumped back to Tacconelli's on a Friday night! Seated within 10 minutes of our reservation and our order was taken quickly. The waitstaff is always so accommodating. Took of dessert to the freezer, cups for drinks, etc. Nice touch. What Pizza's we got: -Special -White -Plain -Pepperoni All were VERY good. Only issue was the timing of the pizza. The sausage is gristly, fatty, and gross. The pepperoni is average at best and always always burnt or at least dried out. The mushrooms taste canned. The sauce contains tomatoes from a plastic tub as previously noted but tastes good nonetheless. The complaints about rude treatment are invalid. The complainers always have attitudes and chips on their shoulders. We have only experienced polite servers because we are always polite. The waits are long, the neighborhood is crime infested, the parking sucks, and the prices are high. But the pizza will probably be worth all of the negatives. You may want to only drive on Richmond Street and East Somerset Street to reduce the chance of being shot compared to the other roads. Yes, the risk really is that high. read more

I assumed it would be difficult to get a pie from Tacconelli's, so I never tried. I finally set a reminder for 10AM and called in: Tomato pie reservation achieved! They were incredibly friendly over the phone, reminding us that a tomato pie has no cheese and letting us know that there was curbside pickup available. At $16.50, it was a bargain, especially considering how excellent it is. We drove up, called, and within minutes we exchanged cash (that's all they accept) for a box of delicious pie. We pulled away to let the next person pull up for their order, then parked at the end of the block to eat a slice while it was still hot. Oh, man. The tomato was thick and flavorful. And the crust was amazing. When I hear the terms "thin and crispy" or "cracker-like" to describe a pizza crust, I wince. But Tacconelli's thin, crispy crust is unlike any other. Simply delicious. I have no idea how they do it. I like that they only make a certain amount of dough each day. I hope they can make a decent living while doing things at a pace they can comfortable sustain. I've Had 3 occasions to try Tacconelli's in 2019 and this seems to be something that will be be my tradition for many years to come. The first time was with a group of about 13 Yelpers who enjoy each other's company on a regular basis outside of Yelp. On this particular outing in the winter of 2019 , it was set up by a fellow Yelper Who decided to relocate to Philly from New York. Alexandra is From New York and her husband lived there for years So these people truly know their Pizza. They set the event up for us by calling ahead and ordering the dough and we truly had a great night with great food and service and we never ever felt rushed. As I recall that evening we had about 10 to 12 pizzas of multiple varieties and everyone loved their pizza. My next visit was as a solo on a weeknight when they weren't terribly busy and I called ahead because normally you have to order your dough ahead of time. Unlike many places around I wasn't treated like I was a slug because I was alone and taking a table. Quite the contrary! I had a really great time with a Margareta pizza. *** On this visit I discovered they have their own Parking Lot just a block away*** Last week on a busy Saturday night, May 4th My significant other and I got together again with A and T and T's mom Who was in visiting from Virginia. As usual we had a lovely time. Our table was big enough for 5 and the 4 pizza's we ate. Service was good and we never felt rushed. What a lovely experience being able to talk and eat and enjoy ourselves without being rushed. It made for a great night Tacconelli's and we thank you!!!
