    Cheesesteak - delish
    Rodney W.

While visiting the Philadelphia area for a wedding, we scoped out some vittles that we wanted to try. Angelo's had very high ratings for its Philly cheesesteaks. I wanted to get there soon after they opened so we wouldn't have to wait a long time, but we slept in and didn't make it until around 11:40 am. We waited in line less than 10 minutes and we placed our electronic order. We requested two traditional cheesesteaks and a pepperoni pizza. Then we left and walked around the neighborhood a little. We found a place nearby to sit and waited for the text message indicating our food was ready. Not long after, we got the text message. I headed to back to the restaurant and stood in a short second line to pay. Once I paid, we grabbed our food and drinks and went back to our spot. Lots of people were sitting around eating and raving about the food. The sandwiches were large and heavy. The first bite was incredible. The flavors of the bread, cheese, and steak hit you. They were very rich and decadent. It was a delicious cheesesteak. The bread was of the highest quality. I don't think the sesame seeds were necessary, but they do convey quality from the housemade bread. The cheesesteak was incredible and very filling. I only ate half of one, since they were so big. The pepperoni pizza was also incredible. It's one of the best that I've had. The undercarriage of the slices were crispy and thin. The flavors were excellent. The quality was excellent. I wish I had this pizza in my neighborhood. The system they have set up is quick and efficient. They serve a massive amount of food in a short amount of time. There were a bunhc of employees cranking out sandwiches just behind the counter. Very well run. Very well done.

As good as people say. Is it the best, I'm not sure until I try the other 50 that might be the best. The long line moves fast. No place to eat but standing or sitting on the curb.

On a recent trip to the Philadelphia area, I visited Angelo's Pizzeria. My fiance is a big fan of the pizza, and wanted to first try it after hearing Dave Portnoy's rave review from One Bite. Since his first time trying it, we make it a point to stop anytime we are passing through the area. Angelo's is a very popular pizza restaurant located in South Philly, near the corner of South 9th and Fitzwater, and also the Palumbo Playground/Rec Center. For those who are tourists, it is also not far from where Pat's and Geno's are both located. Parking here can be challenging, as it is in the middle of South Philly. Sometimes, I have had to circle around. Other times, I have gotten lucky with a street spot somewhat close by. There is a now closed Rite Aid about a block down, and I have parked in that lot before to go and order/pick up my food. If you have someone with you, it might be easier to drop someone off and circle around until they are done. It will depend on the day and time, but each time I have visited parking has been a little bit of a struggle. The signage, as well as the crowd outside, will let you know exactly where the shop is. It is clearly marked with a black awning. The Pizzeria is a quaint shop, and there is no seating. When you enter, you walk right up to the counter to either order or pick up your food. I visited here on a Saturday in September, when I was in the area for a football game. On this day, I was coming in from Chester. So, I was about 30 minutes away. I thought I would attempt to call ahead, and then hopefully my food would be ready around my arrival. Unfortunately, this did not work out. I am not sure if they just do not answer the phone, or if they will stop answering once they hit a certain threshold of orders. However, I tried calling a plethora of times on my way to the store, but no one ever answered the phone. I understand this and am not necessarily complaining, but I wanted to include this here in case someone else is trying to call in an order and cannot get through. I arrived at the store just before 4:00 PM. I went right in and placed my order with one of the employees. Once you place the order, they take your name and phone number. You will get a text message when the order is done, and they provide an estimated wait time at the counter. This is nice, as you know exactly when to head back and when your order is ready. My order only took about 20 minutes to be prepared. When the order is ready, you come back into the store and get in the line on the right side. They will ask for your name, and you pay at that time. I also visited here last month, on a Sunday evening around 6:00 PM. I had a similar experience with wait time for my pizza on this trip as well - about 20 minutes until it was ready from when we placed the order. After getting the pizza, I decided I wanted to try a Cheesesteak. So, I placed my order for the sandwich and only waited about 15 minutes for it to be ready. We have always enjoyed the food from here. The pizza is hot, fresh, and has just the right amount of crispiness. We have gotten the Pepperoni and Sausage each time, and it does not disappoint. The pizza also reheats well, as we typically eat some and then take the rest home to enjoy over the next few days. The Cheesesteak was amazing. It is definitely better than any of the other tourist-type locations in the area. The bread was toasted well, and the mixture of the meat and cheese just tastes divine. I also added onions to mine, which was a nice variety in terms of texture. I will definitely be ordering this, along with my pizza, on all of my return visits. This place is good quality, and for that reason it is a good value. Our pizza is usually in the $35 range, but as stated it is well-prepared and has a nice amount of toppings. The Cheesesteak was slightly less than $20, which is comparable to other spots in the area. However, the quality on this one is through the roof. So, though it is a little pricey here overall, it is worth it for the product. The staff here are very friendly, quick, and efficient. Though they deal with these large crowds seemingly everyday, they are always pleasant to interact with. My waits for food are always less than they say, and I appreciate their hard work! I would love to see some type of online or phone ordering system for this location, as I know it exists for their other spot about 10 minutes away. As an FYI, they used to be cash-only, but started taking cards sometime in the past few months. This is a must-try spot in South Philly, both for locals and visitors. It is so popular that they are opening another location, as of May 2026. The food is worth the wait, and the sometimes hassle, that comes with ordering here. You can even make some friends while you wait for your order. I highly recommend Angelo's to anyone thinking about giving it a try! I am already looking forward to my next trip here and trying more of their menu.

Holy cannoli, where do I begin? Obviously you come here for their cheesesteak, so let's talk about it. Okay, the bun - it's sesame and it's toasted to perfection. You can subtly taste the sesame in each bite. Sometimes you'll crunch on a small sesame seed in between bites, surprising you with its toasty flavors. The meat - pause - is cooked so well with the Cooper Sharp cheese, you get a few burnt ends which provides a nice crunch every now and then. The meat itself is seasoned well, but doesn't overpower all the other aspects of the sandwich. It does its job, sometimes singing a split during the song but never out performing the rest of the band members. The cheese - the Cooper Sharp they suggest to go with their cheesesteak is deliciously intentional. No wiz here, which is both a positive and a negative but man does the cheese work well with the meat. It cuts through but doesn't work too hard in the symphony of the sandwich. It sings along harmoniously with the onions, bread, and meat. The service was fast and quick. Very kind at the counter. Angelos is fast paced, when you're ready type your name and number at the counter, let them know your order and wait a couple minutes. It's fast paced, loud, and energetic. Truly nothing less than what I thought the City of Brotherly Love would provide. 5/5 great experience,

Angelo's cheesesteak lived up to the hype! The bread roll combined with the rich filling was delicious. Service generally was fast despite it being a very busy and hot day. My only advice is to find a spot to enjoy your meal. There is nowhere to sit inside or outside but there is a local park that some of us ate at. Would definitely come back and maybe this time add some hot peppers or something acidic to cut the richness!!

No frills experience. Carry out only, friendly service, and the best Cheese steak in Philadelphia. I got mine with Coopers Sharp, fried onions, and long hots. The bread is perfect. The meat is coated perfectly with cheese, and the onions and long hots give texture and additional depth of flavor. 10/10 no notes. It was 97 degrees when we got there, so I never experienced the long wait times. This is a situation where both the hype is real and the lines is justified.

    Long line but moved quickly!

I've visited Philly many times and never had a "real" cheesesteak until yesterday. I heard from a co-worker who was in town recently and highly recommended Angelo's! My sister and I were attending the Italian market festival right where Angelo's is located. At 11:30 there was quite a line. It moved very quickly. You place your order and they text you when it's ready. For perspective, from line to getting order, approximately 30 minutes. Now the verdict! Got the chicken and I would say it was good but not great! Maybe the beef would have better. Either way, I'm glad I got to try it. Their pizza seemed to be very popular as many were ordering that. There's no dining in as there's no seating. When I'm in town again I would try it!

GO! Do IT!! I finally had the opportunity to try out Angelo's Pizzeria. We tried going the Saturday before Easter, but the line was extremely long. So we came back the Wednesday after Easter for lunch. There was a very small line. The store is tiny. There appears to be an upstairs but I am assuming that is for VIPs and staff hehehe. Really there is just the opening to the store and that is it. Alot of the process is spent outside in line and waiting for your food. So plan accordingly... weather. Ordering and pick up was a little hectic. For us on this day, you order to the left, and pick up on the right. They take cash and card. Once your order is placed you will pay upon pick up. They will text your phone once your order is ready. Instead of my husband and so going with me to pick up and crowded the door entrance, I was the one who went in and picked up the order. We ordered the tomato pie and a philly cheese steak with cooper sharp. The tomato pie was fantastic. It had a thin layer for tomato sauce, then sprinkled with some Italian herbs. It was warm and really hit the spot. I hope to go back and get some pother pizza. They do not do slices, only whole pies. The cheese steak was amazing. I got it with grilled onions and the cooper sharp. The cheese and onions were wrapped together with the beef and nestled in a soft roll. They had many types of cheese to choose from and many types of cheesesteaks to choose. They even had a chicken steak. I have heard amazing things about a lot of other items on their menu. The staff were working their tails off. There were two female cashiers upfront taking orders, and handing off orders. Pay attention to signs, know what you want to order before getting in line if the line is very short. They are loud and will call out when they can help someone. Be respectful to other businesses in the surrounding area and personal residences. Try not to wait around the entrance to Angelo's as it becomes confusing and crowded. Pricing is on point with other locations. This place gets a high rating for good reason. I highly recommend coming here.

BEST CHEESESTEAK EVER !!! The line is long for a reason. We joined the line to place our order about 7 mins later our order was ready. The bread on this sandwich was so good, the steak, the onions, and the combination of the Cooper cheese....utterly amazing. When in Philly you have to go to Angelo's and get this CHEESESTEAK!! No doubt the best sandwich ever !! As I write this review I wish I could have another one right now. Hands down the best.

Definitely worth the hype! We were lucky that there wasn't too much of line during our visit. There are two separate lines, one for ordering and one to pick up food. After placing the order we waited about 20 mins to get our food. Those 20 mins were well worth the wait! The cheesesteak was a giant portion, easily split between two people if not three. The pizza was also delicious. The crust had a nice crunch and it wasn't soggy. I prefer have a solid crust versus a floppy crust so it was a plus for me. Overall, I enjoyed both dishes. Definitely want to come back and try their other subs and pizza.

Great place! It was our first time trying them out. They came highly recommended, so we had to come here. Even though the line was long it moves quick. The staff did a great job answering everyone's questions and the kitchen staff were doing a great job getting the orders done. Their system for ordering is great. Enter your name and phone number, give them your order, get a text, get your order and pay. We ordered Philly cheesesteaks. One with Coopers sharp and fried onions, and one with provolone and cheese wiz. Both were amazing! The bread is amazing as well!

The cheesesteaks are FIRE. They do not skimp on the filling at all. It tastes delicious. Take out only. They sued to be cash only but take card now. They still have an atm. You give ur number then they text when it's ready. It doesn't take long

What is there to say other than this is the best cheesesteak in the city. Maybe the country! Truly a destination food spot. I'd travel from out of state to come here. Walk up and get in line to order, took maybe 2-3 minutes in that line. Cash only, order took exactly 20 minutes like they said and just like that you have your food. Quick and easy. Was around $40 for the two but it was worth it. Pizza was extremely thin and crispy, same bite as the bread from the cheesesteak. The perfect bite: not too hard, not soggy, great chew and the flavor of a sourdough. Amazing. Sauce on the pizza is fantastic. The cooper sharp on the cheesesteak is perfect and there is a TON of meat on the sandwich.

Ask the Community - Angelo's Pizzeria

    Is the grandma pizza vegetarian?

    yes normally

Everyone raves about your food but I'm wondering if there is anything gluten free I could order there?

Ha ha the majority of the menu absolutely not if you're into sausage and peppers with no bread, there you have it!!!!

Do they accept credit cards or Apple Pay?

    They are cash only.

Do they do by the slice?

Nope! But you'll want to eat a whole pie anyway

The yelp menu and the website menus are different. Which one is more current?

the menu changes a lot. I would definitely go based off the website, and when in doubt give them a call!

Can one walk in and order or is it phone orders only? Thanks.

    You can walk in...they're quick.

How long is the wait? Wanted to order ahead before I drive 1.5 hours but not too ahead either.

Around 30-40 minutes depending on the time of day/day you go. Weekend lunch time is about 40 minutes

Does anyone know a team member who I could get in touch with? I'm hoping to connect with someone on a potential collaboration, but have been unable to get ahold of anyone associated with the shop so far. Just looking for an email or phone number!

DM Danny on insta, however collab influencer nonsense isn't gonna happen there so if that's what you want to do save your time and theirs.

Does anyone know if they've reopened? I saw that they were meant to by February 15th.

No, not for a few more weeks, early March at the earliest. (Per their Instagram)

Are they back open again since the fire?

Not yet. Sounds like things are taking longer than expected and tied up with the insurance company.

What's the best time of day and day of the week to order?

I ordered on Saturday (which I'd imagine is pretty busy for a pizza spot in the city). Also ordered around 2:40PM or so. I had to call them 67 times because the phone kept ringing busy...but eventually got through. So don't give up if you're… Read more

Do they have seedless rolls or only the sesame rolls?

    They have both

Is this place open? How does it work with no phone number, you can't crowd into order and wait these days!

It is closed due to covid-19 shutdown and yes you crowd in there or order leave and come back.

Is this place doing slices at lunch? If yes, what's available?

Yes but it's not always the same. They usually have 2-3 pies for slices.

Does this place have Detroit style pizza? I can't tell if the upside down jawn is detroit style. can anyone please confirm. thanks .

Short answer: no The upside-down-jawn is more flirting towards a focaccia/Sicilian (but superior). My current favorite pizza and worth checking out.… Read more

Second visit I went with - The Nad - $15 Chicken cutlet, fresh mozzarella, prosciutto, arugula, Mike's Hot Honey that came on an unseeded Liscio's roll. The portion size was good, chicken was fresh with good breading, the hot honey was a tad on the heavy side, but the flavors all came together pretty good on this one. Sweet, salty, light bitterness from the arugula and some heat from the hot honey. I added Thin Cut Idaho fries to make it a combo for $3 extra and I have to say they were delicious. They smelled like McD's and tasted similar. They are cash only, but have an ATM on site. You can use a card if you order online. The one bathroom they have was pretty clean and organized. I will certainly stop back for a visit if I'm in the area to try out more of their menu. Thanks guys!

It's a huge spot, with lots of little alcoves and corners to tuck your group into, so that you can have privacy to hang out while still being part of the community. On a Sunday morning, the TV had Shrek playing on there. The Bloody Mary has pickle brine in it. The mimosas come from sparkling wine that's on tap. The water is served in those old school hard plastic red drinking glasses like you got at the Pizza Hut buffet back in the day. The fried food is served in those little plastic trays lined with parchment paper. Genuinely, this feels like finding buried treasure and I'm sad at all the time I've wasted not coming here before now. This place is absolutely awesome. Now the food. Polenta fries were creamy on the inside, and crisp on the outside, and not greasy at all. Vegan fried dough was piled high with cinnamon and sugar, and served with the side of maple syrup. The vegan sausage and peppers sandwich was piled high with both! Seriously guys, the portions here are generous, and the food is delicious. If something sounds good, it's probably going to be good. Service is friendly and the servers are knowledgeable about the food. Our waitress didn't have to go ask the kitchen or bar about anything we had questions on. She knew right off the top of her head, and got us sorted very quickly. You feel safe when you're in the hands of folk this good at their job.

Yelp keeps adding a review draft each time I visit a place and upload new photos. Not much more to…read moresay from my previous review. Hearty food. Good vegan menu. Classic Philly bar. Recommended.
