    Cantina Chicken Bowl

Great service and beautiful presentation of my cantina chicken power bowl! I never go to this location, but I was throughly impressed with the freshness of our food.

I got the new Steak Toasted Cheddar Street Chalupas and they gave me three pieces of meat, literally scamming me. I'm genuinely just annoyed. Learn how to make food.

    Proof I was there.

I pulled into the drive-thru at 9:28 and was promptly greeted by a young lady who asked if I could wait a moment. I waited. And waited. And waited... No one ever returned to take my order. I finally said 'I've waited long enough' and was lucky enough that no one else was dumb enough to come in so I backed out of the drive-thru. When I was backing out, you could see the staff run over to the window to see if I was really leaving. There were three cars ahead of me when I pulled in, and by the time I drove around to leave, there were only two. Not sure what they were doing exactly, but it certainly wasn't working! I pulled out at 9:35 (5/15/24). I went home and made myself a fantastic bean burrito just the way I like it and saved myself some money! Apparently I saved a bellyache too, the reviews are pretty awful.

    location.

$10 dollars for an almost empty bowl. I've never written any review before cause I don't ever care enough but the experience I just had at this Taco Bell as well as the horrible customer service.. I paid extra for steak asked for not lettuces tomato or sour cream. We spent almost $50 for our food so we checked to make sure all items were in bag. I open the bag to see my almost 10 dollar protein bowl to look like this. We were still at window waiting as they weren't walking over to us until I waved them down to ask for help, The manager came to window and I asked him to please remake my bowl as I've had this exact bowl many times and it's never been so empty. He said the portions are correct but he can give me a side of my beans since those were missing. Not at all helpful or friendly and the women kaylee at the window said in a snarky tone "she absolutely said no beans" and walked away. But ma'am I absolutely did not ever say that and my very first job at 16 was taco bell and even my teenage self would never act that way. Very horrible experience. Will not be going back to this location. Thanks for the 3 bites of food.

The tacos are seriously good: packed with flavor, well put together, and exactly what you want when the craving hits. Now, is the service a little slow? Yeah... but let's be honest--it's Tuesday, tacos are $1.50, and everyone within a 5-mile radius had the same idea. You're not ordering fast food here, you're participating in a taco event. And really, at $1.50 a taco, what are we expecting--white glove service and a personal mariachi band? I'll gladly wait a few extra minutes when the end result is this good. Bottom line: great tacos, unbeatable price, and totally worth it. Taco Express proves that sometimes the best things in life are cheap... and come on a tortilla.

The downside is that they don't offer much in the way of salsas...they have a basic green and red and traditional pico. I LOVE flavorful and especially HOT salsas and sauce. They offer very mid flavored options. They also have a hard time making a breakfast burrito without eggs. I don't eat eggs. We have tried 6 times now to get an asada breakfast but with no eggs....just meat, cheese and potatoes. We have gotten eggs with it twice, once a folded quesadilla with french fries on top(?) and 3x now where it's meat cheese and dried out french fries instead of the potatoes that normally comes in the breakfast burrito. My husband loves eggs and breakfast burritos so it's always great for him. They're consistent and have value with their specials. They're just a very basic place in terms of cookery (pretty dry) and flavor. It's good for what it is; but definitely doesn't satisfy when you want that real taco truck craving.

However, this is my first time trying out their Fair Oaks location. Coincidentally, this restaurant is also on Madison Ave but roughly 4 miles east and adjacent to Fair Oaks Blvd. Located in a small strip-mall, this place neighbors other family owned-and-operated businesses that include "Fabian's Italian Bistro" and "Moth Hole Consignment Boutique". And to those of you locals that remember, this is actually where "El Gallo Mexican Restaurant" once stood from 2018-2024. I came here with my lady during the evening of Tuesday 6/24/2025 at around 6:00pm. The parking lot was packed with cars which I am assuming was a blend of El Balcon and Fabian's customers among others. One thing that really caught my attention was the generous outdoor patio as their Manzanita location does not offer. However, the big picture is on the inside of this place. First of all, it is way more spacious and secondly, they offer a full bar with some amazing top-shelf tequilas. The dining area itself has a main room but also an additional dining room with a ton of seating. Menu options are quite similar to their other location and I've got to say, they offer a huge variety of everything; tacos, burritos, enchiladas, seafood, and much more. They even offer a standard non-Mexican breakfast entree menu served daily from 9am-2pm. During our visit, we took full advantage of their "Happy Hour" special. And since it was a Tuesday, what better way to make the week better than tacos? I ordered two "Carnitas" tacos and one "Pollo" taco. Best of all, these were only $1.75/ea (as of summer 2025). The salsa bar is also very impressive with a huge variety of mid/hot salsas, jalapeños, radishes, limes, and fresh tortilla chips. Once placing our orders, our food arrives in a quick 5 minutes. And as you can see from the photo, they did not disappoint. Surprisingly, the real winner here was their red salsa as it offered the perfect balance of tangy and spicy. Both tacos were cooked to perfection as the seasoning on both the carnitas and pollo tacos tasted amazingly delicious. Even the owner/manager came over to our table to make sure we were enjoying our food. He was also full of enthusiasm and positive energy which showed how much he genuinely cared for his business and its customers. All in all, the Fair Oaks "El Balcon Taqueria" earns a unanimous five-star rating in my book. The amazingly affordable prices, top-notch customer service, convenient location, and delicious Mexican food earn all high notes from me. Best of all, they are open seven days a week from 9am-9pm. Come hungry and if you wish to partake in a cerveza or well drink, they will have you covered!

The Steak a la Chicana was a generous portion, which is definitely 2 meals for me. Cilantro rice wasn't anything special. The SWEET CORN TAMALITO is yummy comfort. I was headed to Burger King but changed my mind when I eyed Taco Express across the parking lot. Well I spotted a large inflatable shaped as the Taco Express character waving his arm. It was Tuesday, the special of the day was $1.50 crispy tacos. The meat choices were chicken, ground beef, and beef. I ordered four of those, a side of rice, and chips n salsa. The total with tax was $12 something. The green salsa had a spicy kickyness but without the heat. The red salsa had a lingering, bold hot spiciness. I tried it and it burned. The tacos weren't bad at all. The meats weren't greasy. The taco shells were fresh fried, without the greasiness. Also for the price I was envisioning small or mini sized tacos, but pleasantly surprised that they were regular sized. No skinny minis. Plus they didn't skimp on filling the taco with the proteins. Now here's what made it even better--this used to be a Taco Bell back in the day, so let me just say... the taco energy in this building is deeply rooted. The tortilla spirits were already working overtime before I even walked in. I stepped inside, got greeted right away, and placed my order for carne asada tacos and a drink. Simple. Efficient. Exactly what the pre-movie mission required. But here's where things got impressive... I swear the second I paid, my food was basically already waiting for me like it had somehow known I was coming. And unless I missed someone hiding in the back doing ninja-level prep work, I'm pretty sure the young lady up front was running the whole operation. She was taking my order, working the drive-thru headset, handling everything, and still keeping it smooth like it was just another regular day. That kind of hustle deserves respect. Now let's talk tacos. These carne asada tacos came out hot, flavorful, and straight-up comforting. The kind of flavor that doesn't taste like "fast food trying to be tacos"--nah, these tasted like somebody's grandma would absolutely approve. And if the food gives "abuela would nod in silence and keep cooking," that's a compliment of the highest order. Every bite hit. The meat had flavor, the tacos were put together right, and for a quick stop before a movie, this absolutely overdelivered. The place was easy, the service was fast, and the whole stop felt like one of those hidden little wins you're glad you trusted. In all, Taco Express did exactly what it needed to do... Quick. Flavorful. No nonsense. Strong taco ancestry. And honestly, if this building was once a Taco Bell and has now evolved into this... that's character development. Will I be back? Yeah... because movie plans and tacos are a dangerous combo.
