The famous rice and beans. The original owner had a better one but the current option is still solid.

Taco Ticos. Which I believe when translated means Taco Tacos :) This was one of my favorite comfort food spots during my nine year stint in Newburgh. A former student and I had lunch there my first time and it just blew me away. They have lots of things on the menu but my go to was always the hard shell tacos with everything (seasoned beef, grilled onions, cheese and lettuce) and the rice and beans. The rice was delicious and always had big hunks of sausage in it. You piled the beans on top and had an incredible taco side dish. The tacos are delicious, something about the combo of each ingredient always made me smile. They also have a famous hot sauce which I always dumped liberally on every taco. I must admit and I am sure locals feel the same, that the original ownership had a better product. It was a husband and wife team that sold the business. Despite that fact, this doesn't stop me from jerking my wheel towards Newburgh when passing on the highway. Taco Tico will always have a tractor beam effect on me.

yellow rice and beans with sausage hard shell taco fajitas

always drive by here to the bank and finally had to try based on a co-worker praise. yeah, I get it is a hole in place with a tight parking a lot, but I think the place is charming. so, the mother and daughter team behind the counter are super friendly and sweet, makes feel welcome and makes sure your order is right and what you're getting with your choice. so, I ordered a chicken fajita, pork hard shell taco and yellow rice and beans with sausage. I really wanted beef for everything instead, but they informed me they ran out of beef, and they were 30 minutes before closing so fair enough. food took a while, but i understand, its only one-person making it. so, after a while i got my food, I was thanked and asked if i wanted sauces, there hot sauce is really good. hard shell taco was pretty good, shell was crunchy, the meat was plenty and tender, not too much lettuce and tomato being filler, fajita was more like a burrito honestly, but the chicken inside was yummy and cheese fully melted and gooey. yellow rice was fluffy and hot, beans and sauce they were in was yummy, loved scooping into the rice. sausage was alright, felt it was over cooked, since it was bit dry. overall, this place is decent and very cheap, pretty good value for a $10, quick meal pick me up.

Small menu with everything you need to bring your soul to happiness

Best Tacos I've had between Poughkeepsie and Newburgh so far! It's a very small location but everything on the menu is seasoned to perfection. I was questioning the sautéed onions on the taco at first glance, but after tasting the marriage of meat, cheese, onions, and homemade hot sauce I couldn't understand why I never had a taco like this before. I strongly suggest getting an empanada (meat pie) with every meal. It's a great added bonus for your soul. The staff is very friendly and the wait is not very long, even with a large line. As of May 2018 they now except credit cards. Since I was told about this spot in March, I've gone at least 1-2 times a week for lunch. Don't hesitate like did. This place has excellent taste.

Inside was nice with plenty of seating for groups and AC to keep you cool on hot summer days. Acoustics were great we were able to enjoy our conversation without having to yell over loud music. Bathrooms were clean with a touch of Puerto Rico as ambient coquí frogs sing in the background. The staff were amazing, friendly attentive and helpful. Our waitress was top notch took care of our coffee and food orders with a smile on a rainy cloudy day. Ordered the Coquito latte, delicious- paired with the sweet and spicy chicken and Coquito batter waffle!! Wow the flavor was great didn't even need syrup. Loved the contrast of sweet and salty. Great portion sizes for the price. My wife got the Coquito French toast with scrambled eggs hash brown potatoes and bacon served on a charcuterie board. Eggs were fluffy and delicious the French toast was soft and buttery.

If you're just driving by you've probably missed it a few times like I had. I've ordered now a few times and must say its quality is consistent. When you walk in it's clean and plenty of seating. Drinks and dessert refrigerators are against the right wall. Nice selection of beverages. Their walk up counter is clean and brightly lit. Food on display looks delicious and fresh. All the employees that I've seen have all been helpful and respectful. A warm friendly atmosphere. Arroz con gandules and pernil is my go to every single time. I ordered their Sopa de Fideo when I was sick a couple weeks ago and it hit the spot! I tried the flan and tres leche once and it wasn't good and tasted "off". I can tell that the Arroz con gandules was cooked with a really good sofrito and the pernil is moist and flavorful every single time. I eat twice from a small plate. I believe it was like $12. Definitely getting more bang for your buck at Nelly's and it's actual home cooked meals!!

There were so many options, including goat, oxtail, pigs feet and more popular proteins like pernil, chicken and beef. My fiance and I decided to share a large plate and I'm so glad we decided to share because the portion was HUGE!! We got yellow rice, black beans, stewed chicken, pernil and maduros all piled high on a plate. We also got a bottle of water and a tamarind Jarritos soda. They had a ton of different bottled beverages and a few desserts options too. They also have many made to order menu items, including Mofongo. The food was absolutely delicious and bursting with flavor. Everything was cooked to perfection. We also loved their housemade jalapeno hot sauce. The staff was friendly and there were a few tables if you prefer to dine in. I can't recommend Angel's enough!

And just to be clear, when I say Spanish food, I'm not talking about Mexican food. The pernil was decent. I liked that the meat was tender and had good flavor, but I felt like it could have used a little more seasoning overall. The skin wasn't as crispy as I would have liked, and unfortunately, it kept getting stuck in my teeth. The arroz con gandules was alright--nothing that really stood out. The chicken stew, however, was great! The meat was so tender that it practically fell right off the bone.
