My partner and I came for DineLA & for his birthday. The space is beautiful & eclectic, definitely IG-worthy. They have different spaces & even a greenhouse that you can book for a large party. Super cute & dog-friendly, so that's a plus. The server was helpful with the menu & brought a water bowl for my dog, so we loved that. The problem was that the team bringing out the food took 20-30 minutes without an update or a quick "so sorry we're backed up." This was not our server, again, he was great. The people bringing out the food did not seem to be managing the time well. At some point, it seemed like our server went on break, but there was no update by him or anyone else, so it felt like we were sitting at a table at home without a good experience to have a restaurant... because I could just make food at home on my own time if I wanted to... 70 minutes in (mind you, on their menu they ask the customers to only dine for 90 minutes), a manager? came over to ask how we were all doing. My partner replied, "we are just waiting on the churro from the DineLA menu," to which he nodded and took the note. 20 minutes later and we were still waiting for these churros and the check. At 90 minutes, I got up & asked a lady who was managing the front and folding napkins/silverware if someone could please check on our churros that have been missing for 30 minutes. She came back with them and, not shockingly, they were cold. I complained & another server came over to ask if we wanted something else and apologized, to which I said, "no thank you, we'd like the check." My partner & dog left as they were tired after almost 2 hours. The manager came to inquire & I told him about the poor experience, to which he said "he went to check on the churros," & I complained the timing did not show that. We went for a large group's birthday party. I have to say the first thing I noticed was the amazing beautiful ambience and decor. I felt like I was in another country. It was absolutely beautiful. The drinks and the food were really good. I had some chicken tacos and a Agua de Jamaica. The customer service was interesting. They brought out half the tables drinks, and then 10 minutes later the other half. Same with the food. But they ended up giving us free churros at the end for our birthday celebration, and the churros were absolutely delicious. They were soft and warm and crunchy and I wanted more! I will definitely come back. The bathrooms were pretty clean and very beautifully done with the wallpaper. Definitely wanted to have a photo shoot in there. Parking is a little tricky because you're on the main road, but we actually got a spot right out front! Prices are not bad There is also a bar right next-door. Tasty food and a vibrant, diverse crowd, though the portions are a bit small for the price. Drinks are solid, and highly recommend any of the margaritas. We kicked off dinner with some fresh guacamole, elote and the brussels sprouts. Please do yourself a favor and order the brussels. Like if there is anything you take away from this review it's to make sure you don't miss out on those. We also got the Parillada platter which is great for 2-3 people, but it actually felt like it was better for just two so keep that in mind. In Los Angeles, when you are looking for a place to take out of town guests from some cloudy, rainy, cold places, they almost invariably love a Mexican restaurant. There are Mexican places all over this country now, but some of the best in the US are in Los Angeles. One of them is in Silver Lake, Tacolina. We were there on a warm January afternoon for lunch. It was crowded when we arrived so larger parties needed two tables as this outdoor space is cleverly parqueted with many intimate, round surfaces. All of them are either backed up to a comfortable banquette (as ours was) or outfitted with cushiony chairs. There is a clever "sunscreen" overhead through which some old trees are still climbing toward the sky. The first thing you notice is the color -- riots of ruby, turquoise, bright leafy green, and mustard -- very south of the border, let's say. Then you can imagine that you are in a tropical rainforest of sorts. The overall effect is enlivening and charming but somehow calming too. Next, there is the menu -- full of unique items along with familiar ones but done with Tacolina's special twist. Take Cafe de Olla, for example. Most places just combine ordinary black coffee, simple (cane) syrup, and cinnamon. But here they add a touch of chili to exquisite La Colombe and it makes all the difference -- I could have downed a pitcher of that stuff! We were a conventional bunch so we got familiar dishes (see my photos) and all of it was very good. The service was excellent too and we had two people fussing over us, especially the smiling and attentive James. Tacolina is on a busy stretch of Sunset in a gritty but interesting part of town. I have always loved Silverlake, while being aware of its challenges -- parking for one, and dodging a few urbanic hazards. But, for this particular experience, it is well worth it. And, coming from a big old city myself, I actually welcome a familiar hit of reality. If you come early, you can grab metered parking all along the street. Still, once you are inside, Tacolina envelops you in another world, one with chattering birds, soft music, rich colors, and exceptional flavor. And when you leave (you won't want to), make sure to drive up and down the boulevard to see a panoply of one-of-a-kind shops that still thrive in this festive little patch of LA. We will be back. Went to Tacolina for a friend's birthday. Went on a Saturday night for a 5pm dinner, so plenty of street parking. But can imagine the later and more prime it gets - the more difficult parking will be to get. The entrance is very nice. The waiting area has some seats which is a really nice touch. You don't feel like you're just standing around and in people's way. The space is massive, wide, and free. This dinner was in August and it was so warm in that restaurant. The fans were like mice blowing through plastic straws. No air flow. I sweated through my meal, but that's ok. The seats were mediocre. Need better seats if you're charging $25 for 2 tacos. Our drinks for 11 people came in two batches ten minutes apart. Same with food. I am pretty sure that's not normal. Our server Branson was amazing. Attentive, kind, and extremely helpful. More fans please. I was sweating! Chips and salsa and guac was great! Guac needed more salt. I ordered the chicken nachos. Delicious. The chicken was alright. Nothing amazing. We had a reservation for 8 at lunch time on Sunday, our table was on the back of the yard partially shaded, the fan did not work and it was 90 degrees out. When we asked the manger to bring us a extra umbrella he refused and when we asked him to move us to a shaded area he refused too. The moment you step inside (the inside is outside), the restaurant has a breezy, relaxed vibe that almost feels like being on vacation. Sometime parking can be a challenge since it is street parking only. We have been here several times with great, prompt service. Service-wise on this visit, our server was friendly, but the pacing was a drawback. He never came back to check on us once the food arrived, forgot to put in a drink order and everything moved much slower than expected. We ordered taquitos and fish tacos and enchiladas verdes from the brunch menu. The enchiladas were flavorful and while I initially thought there was a lot of sauce, it ended up being perfect because it was well absorbed by the tortillas/chicken. The tacos were good, but a bit more bland than on past visits, which was disappointing since they're usually a highlight. The food and service are generally 5 stars. We did the Dine LA special for $45, and overall the food absolutely delivered. The chips, guac, and salsa were fantastic fresh, flavorful, and a great way to start. The Caesar salad was absolutely killer and easily the standout of the meal. The taquitos were pretty good, solid and satisfying. The only food miss was the sizzling skillet, mostly because it didn't actually sizzle when it came out. Flavor was fine, but when something is marketed that way, expectations are set. Service was a bit uneven. Our main server took our order, but after that was rarely around and spent a noticeable amount of time chatting with other employees rather than checking on our table. The other servers who did stop by were very kind and attentive, and the bartender was superb, which helped make up for it. We also waited 20-25 minutes for our check and eventually my grandma had to flag someone down, which put a frustrating end on an otherwise good meal. Dishes weren't cleared very proactively either, so the table piled up as the night went on. The atmosphere is very dark, though it is also very pretty and moody, just something to be aware of. Overall: great food, beautiful space, but service consistency could use some work.
