The food was pretty average--honestly, I've had better from Mexican food trucks. It's overpriced for both the portion size and the taste. The service was terrible. We waited over 20 minutes before anyone came to take our order. While we were still eating, and less than 5 minutes after ordering drinks, an older Mexican woman came over and told us to leave because she needed the table. Extremely rude. Tasty food and a vibrant, diverse crowd, though the portions are a bit small for the price. Drinks are solid, and highly recommend any of the margaritas. We kicked off dinner with some fresh guacamole, elote and the brussels sprouts. Please do yourself a favor and order the brussels. Like if there is anything you take away from this review it's to make sure you don't miss out on those. We also got the Parillada platter which is great for 2-3 people, but it actually felt like it was better for just two so keep that in mind. In Los Angeles, when you are looking for a place to take out of town guests from some cloudy, rainy, cold places, they almost invariably love a Mexican restaurant. There are Mexican places all over this country now, but some of the best in the US are in Los Angeles. One of them is in Silver Lake, Tacolina. We were there on a warm January afternoon for lunch. It was crowded when we arrived so larger parties needed two tables as this outdoor space is cleverly parqueted with many intimate, round surfaces. All of them are either backed up to a comfortable banquette (as ours was) or outfitted with cushiony chairs. There is a clever "sunscreen" overhead through which some old trees are still climbing toward the sky. The first thing you notice is the color -- riots of ruby, turquoise, bright leafy green, and mustard -- very south of the border, let's say. Then you can imagine that you are in a tropical rainforest of sorts. The overall effect is enlivening and charming but somehow calming too. Next, there is the menu -- full of unique items along with familiar ones but done with Tacolina's special twist. Take Cafe de Olla, for example. Most places just combine ordinary black coffee, simple (cane) syrup, and cinnamon. But here they add a touch of chili to exquisite La Colombe and it makes all the difference -- I could have downed a pitcher of that stuff! We were a conventional bunch so we got familiar dishes (see my photos) and all of it was very good. The service was excellent too and we had two people fussing over us, especially the smiling and attentive James. Tacolina is on a busy stretch of Sunset in a gritty but interesting part of town. I have always loved Silverlake, while being aware of its challenges -- parking for one, and dodging a few urbanic hazards. But, for this particular experience, it is well worth it. And, coming from a big old city myself, I actually welcome a familiar hit of reality. If you come early, you can grab metered parking all along the street. Still, once you are inside, Tacolina envelops you in another world, one with chattering birds, soft music, rich colors, and exceptional flavor. And when you leave (you won't want to), make sure to drive up and down the boulevard to see a panoply of one-of-a-kind shops that still thrive in this festive little patch of LA. We will be back. The evening quickly turned busy, but being within the greenhouse it kept our group's vibe cozy and relaxed. The moment you step inside (the inside is outside), the restaurant has a breezy, relaxed vibe that almost feels like being on vacation. Sometime parking can be a challenge since it is street parking only. We have been here several times with great, prompt service. Service-wise on this visit, our server was friendly, but the pacing was a drawback. He never came back to check on us once the food arrived, forgot to put in a drink order and everything moved much slower than expected. We ordered taquitos and fish tacos and enchiladas verdes from the brunch menu. The enchiladas were flavorful and while I initially thought there was a lot of sauce, it ended up being perfect because it was well absorbed by the tortillas/chicken. The tacos were good, but a bit more bland than on past visits, which was disappointing since they're usually a highlight. The food and service are generally 5 stars. We did the Dine LA special for $45, and overall the food absolutely delivered. The chips, guac, and salsa were fantastic fresh, flavorful, and a great way to start. The Caesar salad was absolutely killer and easily the standout of the meal. The taquitos were pretty good, solid and satisfying. The only food miss was the sizzling skillet, mostly because it didn't actually sizzle when it came out. Flavor was fine, but when something is marketed that way, expectations are set. Service was a bit uneven. Our main server took our order, but after that was rarely around and spent a noticeable amount of time chatting with other employees rather than checking on our table. The other servers who did stop by were very kind and attentive, and the bartender was superb, which helped make up for it. We also waited 20-25 minutes for our check and eventually my grandma had to flag someone down, which put a frustrating end on an otherwise good meal. Dishes weren't cleared very proactively either, so the table piled up as the night went on. The atmosphere is very dark, though it is also very pretty and moody, just something to be aware of. Overall: great food, beautiful space, but service consistency could use some work. I'd definitely come back for the food, especially that Caesar, just hoping for a smoother service experience next time. 3 stars it's because the service was lacking. The salsa flight was very good, everything was high quality since the tortillas and salsas are made in house. The burrito was okay, not the best I've had but not bad by any means. *Delayed post from Jan '25 Tacoina is a fantastic spot for special occasions and date nights. The restaurant is a mix of indoor/outdoor seating, with real plants, fire pits, and cozy nooks, featuring plenty of seating and photo opportunities throughout the space. Our server was knowledgeable on the menu and super personable, which took our experience to extra heights. Food wise, the portion sizes and meat to toppings ratio was perfect and left nothing to be desired. For starters, we ordered the Tuna Tostada. The tostada itself was very crispy, complimenting the creamy textures of both a generous amount of guacamole and drizzled chipotle sauce. The raw tuna felt fresh and went perfectly with the cucumber and ponzu sauce that gave the tuna a slight sweet flavor. The crispy shallots and chives on top really brought this small plate together, giving a japanese-mexican fusion vibe with its similarities to a spicy tuna roll. Same-same, but different. We also ordered the Shrimp Aguachile, which had a lovely acidity similar to ceviche and came with a larger quantity of shrimp than we expected. The spice level was pleasantly high due to the jalapeño. The only issue I had with this dish was the thickness of the tostadas. While I appreciated the rustic tortillas made in-house, their thickness made bites too chewy in places. Given the amount of shrimp, this dish would have benefited from having four, thinner and crispier tortillas you can break to scoop up the shrimp, instead of two thick ones. The Conchinita Tacos were the highlight of the night! Once again the quantity of pork was large, but they weren't overcompensating for lack of moisture, as it was juicy and had flavorful bits of charcoal. The pickled onions and radishes on top gave it a crunch factor and the lime brightened the heaviness of the dish, highlighting the sugar in the roasted pineapple. The Baja Fish Tacos were also a hit, cooked properly in a light batter, which brought out the tenderness of the fish, instead of being overshadowed by a thick crust. There was a decent amount of salsa and chipotle cream on top - a delightful contrast to the crunchy radish. Our last savory dish was the Grilled Elote off the Cob, which is exactly what it sounds like: the classic Mexican dish made with Grilled Sweet Corn, Crema, Parmesan, Cumin, and Chili. For dessert, we had the Key Lime Pie. While the custard had great taste and texture, and the cream on top was well proportioned, the tart itself was too thick, causing an imbalance of filling to shell ratio. It was fully cooked though. Tacos are served two per order, with no option to mix and match, which feels unnecessarily rigid. The fried velvet shrimp and vegan mushroom tacos were both disappointingly bland and won't be getting a repeat order. The cochinita pork was better--decent, but not memorable. My margarita was flavorful but surprisingly weak--no buzz, no kick. My friends had the palomito and found it mediocre at best. So: three stars for the gorgeous design and stellar service. Before I start this review, I want to state that I am very critical about Mexican food. It has to be better than what my mom makes because her food is the best, in my opinion. That being said, in short, Go Here! I want to give a shout out to Helen who reccomened this spot. I went with a new friend and we decided to bond over food. We went to town and got the following: I am still savoring Mary's chicken tacos which are made with fresh organic chicken, lettuce, avocado and crispy melted cheese. To top it off the guajillo chilies gives the right amount of spice that all around makes you want to order more tacos even if you are full. The tacos are filling after two and yet you'll want another one because they are that flavorful and good. Nachos: We were worried that these came with the queso that is normally served at the movies and its terrible. But fear not yelp, the queso not only was added in the right portion, but the nachos also came with beans, fresh jalapeño slices, and combined with the pico de Gallo and the guac. I feel like this alone can be a meal with the chicken. Baja fish tacos: My new friend got them fried and she said it was so good, she devoured it in less than 5 minutes. The steak dishes at the table were also a hit. A couple of dishes fell short: one burrito with mushrooms had sauces/marinade that were a little overpowering, and my mom's fish tacos were inconsistent--one piece was okay, but the other was too fishy to eat. She reordered chicken tacos (toppings on the side due to a dietary restriction), but the chicken was dry and bland. Despite that, the service and atmosphere made up for it, and the staff was attentive and friendly. One thing worth noting: parking is a nightmare--I really think they should consider adding valet. A festive and open concept restaurant that reminded me a bit of Tulum. The food and cocktails were delicious (seriously everything was 10/10!), the service could have been better. For one, we were so excited to try out the purple sweet potato dish, and when we learned that they were all out during our 7:30 PM reservation we were a bit disappointed. Secondly, the staff were very friendly and accommodating during our little birthday dinner celebration for our girlfriend, but some items took longer to come out than others, and one particular dish was forgotten altogether. * Chips & Guacamole 10/10 * Chips & Salsa Flight 10/10 (I think this appetizer is a must! All of the salsas were so interesting & delicious. it's also nice to use on your tacos or entrées.) * Elote 10/10 * Chicken tacos 10/10 * Pork tacos 10/10 Hidden "speakeasy" bar that's connected to the restaurant (I think it's called the Jaguar Room) is super chic and moody. Food is delicious, I will say I wish my food came out hotter as it was kind cold but it was still very delicious. Drinks are well made, service can be a hit or miss as every time I've gone I either get a super friendly server or other times a server who's not so attentive and doesn't have a great attitude but besides that atmosphere is great and food is good. read more

1st time here. Our waitress Carolina was a sweet heart. We were greeted with a shot of a guava juice mixture. Delicious! We ordered a flight of salsa, since we were not sure of our favorites. Carolina and the Manager were soo friendly, nice and knowledgeable. They gave us their favorites. Delicious! I ordered the Shrimp Diablo and my date ordered the Chicken dish. Our dishes were heavenly Delicious! ( not sure why there were bad reviews ). Honestly the only thing I will change is the background music ( tropical music, reggaton or cuban music ) would be a nice change. The ambiance reminded me of a vacation feel ( and a scene from Marvelous Mrs. Masiel). Don't believe those those bad reviews. We had an amazing, Delicious time. And we will be back! read more
