I've been having my hair cut by Julie for a few years now and she's the best I've had. What drew me to the salon was the 'curly' part of their name as not all stylists know how to cut curly hair. Julie cuts it so well that 3 friends with curly hair (plus one without it) now get their hair cut by Julie or her sister Joanie. I'm only coming in here to say this because I don't want someone else to feel how I feel. I came in back in June of this year. I hadn't gotten a haircut from a salon in like 9 years bc the last time I had gone, they messed up my hair and were complaining to me about how my hair is so curly and how I have so much. I was in 4th grade. It made me so insecure about my hair that I kept it in a bun every day when I would go anywhere. That habit has stayed all these years. I had been cutting my own hair bc I felt like I couldn't trust anyone with my hair. I finally went to this salon bc I kept seeing my friends getting their hair done and loving it so I felt I should do the same. I saw this was a curly hair salon and so I was so excited because I was like finally people who understand my hair! I asked for a small trim just to cut dead ends, I wanted to keep the length. For reference my hair was about at my chest. I don't know the lady who helped me's name anyways she asked me if I wanted layers. I said absolutely not bc I didn't wanna look old lol. She said do you want me to reduce volume of your hair. I said yea sure (bc of the last salon who complained about my hair volume and not really knowing what she meant ). During the cut, I noticed she was cutting A LOT of hair. But me, being scared to say smthg and I felt like I just need to trust the process bc I don't know hair, didn't say anything. Plus, by the time I was upset about it, it was already so short like above my shoulders. I know it was a junior stylist who did my hair but a senior stylist watched over her. The senior stylist came after the cut and did some finishes and asked me do you like it? I actually held back tears I was so upset. THERE WERE LAYERS AFTER I ASKED FOR NO LAYERS. And my hair was so freaking short. Anyways, now to present time (5 months later), I am so insecure about my hair because now I can see how uneven the cut is. I had asked for the front to be short and the back to be longer and for it to be like a gradual length or whatever but it's quite literally the opposite. All these months I thought I was tripping bc I thought I can't see how it rly looks but omg it's actually so bad that I can notice it very clearly. I'm an 18 year old girl in college, so I really care about my appearance. I feel like I can never go to a salon again. I want to add that the stylists were super nice and friendly. I had an appointment scheduled for 1.5 hours, but the service took about 2 hours, and I left with wet hair and very disappointing results. At the beginning, the stylist (the owner) started a dry haircut, which I had agreed to. However, she only worked on part of the right side of my head. When another client arrived, she stopped and sent me to wash my hair, even though the haircut was clearly incomplete. When I pointed that out, she said she could "see the pattern," so it was fine, and never went back to finish the dry cut properly on the other side. After that, the service became very inconsistent. She would come back to me briefly, then leave to work on other clients. At one point, she applied a mask and left me sitting for a long time while attending to others. Later, she said the conditioner would only take a few minutes, but I was left with it on my hair for around 30 minutes while she was cutting someone else's hair. During the process, I was also placed under a steamer and left unattended. I felt discomfort at the time, and later noticed a red irritated spot and flaking on my scalp, which I have never had before. I clearly told her that my daughter's wedding was the next day and that I needed my hair to look good. Despite that, there was no proper consultation. She did not ask how short I wanted my hair, did not explain what she was doing, and did not warn me that the steamer/mask could lift color from my roots. As a result, more gray became visible, which was the opposite of what I needed. The styling was especially disappointing. I came in with naturally curly hair that I regularly style well. She repeatedly said my hair was "just wavy," which is not accurate. She did not follow proper curly hair styling techniques. She partially dried my hair, left sections unfinished, and then applied gel to already dry ends while roots were still wet. She used the diffuser only briefly and then suggested I sit under a hood dryer, but at that point my hair already looked very poor and inconsistent. I left with hair that had no curl definition, looked uneven, and was not properly dried. It honestly looked worse than when I came in. I had to go home, rewash, and restyle everything myself to get my curls back. After restyling, I can see that the haircut itself does not support my natural curl pattern, especially in the back. It feels like the better curls were cut off, while less defined sections were left, which makes styling harder than before. Overall, this felt rushed, inattentive, and unprofessional, especially given the $170 price and the importance of the occasion. Words are insufficient to describe my gratitude for Jaylen and the team at Tacoma Curly Salon! I asked for lots of layers and volume to get a shaggy look, and I got exactly what I wanted. It is obvious that the team is well-versed in working with a variety of hair textures. I heard amazing things and i was so excited to have someone experienced with curls-I did choose an apprentice for $70 a haircut. This is maybe where I went wrong but I feel even as an apprentice- they should be capable. Jaylen is not confident or capable in my opinion to work on real human hair. I showed photos of what I wanted and I'm extremely disappointed and embarrassed of my haircut. It's taken me weeks of looking in mirror trying to style with disappointment to leave this review. Although her mom, the owner stepped into help, it was very uncomfortable sitting through this girl who clearly was nervous about what she was doing. Sadly, I will not be going back. I cannot recommend this salon. While the staff was super nice, their finished product was not. I went in for a balayage and left with what looked like grown out highlights. It just went from dark to light, no gradation of color at all. I also left with wet hair so I couldn't see it until it was dry. The salon was very accommodating and offered to correct it. When I went in for the correction, I asked for her to just turn it into a highlight and bring the light pieces up. She only did the parts that you see when my hair was down so when it got pulled up it still looked like months old color. The photos I attached were after the second time in the salon. The color itself looks like a 90s style aggressive cap highlight and the blonde is so brassy. I thought for a long time about posting this as I never like to ruin people's business reviews in what could have simply been a bad day for someone. I've posted it for a few reasons. 1. Apparently this is not a one- off as I have since met multiple local curl women to have stories similar to mine who felt too bad to write reviews. I actually read reviews so I think they're important. 2. My curl pattern was damaged when I was put under a hot dryer with foils in. This is so damaging to curly hair! The pieces that pulled super light are quite limp and don't curl like they used to. 3. They give you a discount for 5-Star reviews which is so unethical. I went to tacoma curly salon in December to get a curly cut, for one I'd like to say their prices are WAY too high, for two they made my hair uneven which I believe is due to the stylist being distracted and more focused on another stylist and her client which was disrespectful and disappointing.In march when my haircut was growing out I noticed my hair was completely uneven, my left side was noticeably shorter than my right. I contacted her and she said I could come in the next day to get it fixed and I did. When I was there I got it "fixed" and there was no charge BUT she made the longer side shorter! She has very thick curly hair and from the moment we walked in the salon, she was complimented and made to feel welcome. They knew exactly what to do and gave her advice on caring for it every step of the way. They also took the time to dry her hair... something that's never happened at any other salon, ever. I specifically went to Tacoma Curly Salon because I'm on my curly journey and thought, where better to go to get an understanding of of what my hair needs than a salon that specializes in curls! I selected Joan because she was touted as a Master Stylist with an "intuitive understanding of curls and texture" and stated "Joan enjoys working with Curly Clients!" QUESTIONS: First thing when seated in the chair I expresses that I was hoping to learn about the needs and styling tips, to bring out the best in my curls, for my specific hair type. I asked about porosity, she didn't have an answer. I asked what curl type I am, I've never been able to figure out if I'm a 2a, b, or c. She asked the other stylist. I asked what products would be best for my fine hair, the other stylist suggested Love Your Curls for wavy hair because it is lightweight. She said the curly line would be too heavy for my hair (thank you!). I asked if I should be using a mousse or gel, Joan said, "I like to use creams". Ok, I came to get suggestions for MY hair, not your hair and not what you use on EVERYONE. CUT: She did tell me she was going to start off by trimming my ends, but then started cutting my hair without telling me what she was doing, I had to ask her where these apparent layers were going to start. The one good thing is she did the cut with my normal part. STYLING: SHE BLEW DRY MY HAIR STRAIGHT THEN TRIED TO FORCE CURLS BACK IN!!! What!?!?!?!? So she blew dry with a regular high velocity dryer, then added more product and did finger curls to try to make the hair curl instead of encouraging the natural curl from wet hair. This goes against EVERYTHING I've read or seen on the web. She then diffused it and placed me under a dryer. RESULTS: My hair was flat, FRIZZY, super dry feeling, and dull looking. There was no shine or luster. I really did not like the "creams" she used. I could not tell if it was a decent cut or not until the next day after I rewashed and restyled it. I went elsewhere and got another cut. There were little to no layers. Honestly, after styling, I really couldn't see a difference from before. VERDICT: Waste of time and money. If I'd gone to my regular stylist, Jana at Supernova, I would have at least had a good time. I left here angry and disappointed. Not sure why I left her a tip, I should have given it to her sister whom answered all my questions I don't recall her name, I know it started with a J. I am devastated about my hair. I went in for a balayage with Julie and now have hair that is completely fried and may need to be cut off. My regular colorist couldn't get me in this month and I decided to give Tacoma Curly Salon a chance as they tout themselves as experts with curly hair. I've spent years restoring my curl health and getting my curl pattern on point. Julie had someone else (her niece) mix the colors, one bowl to cover my gray roots and another for the highlights. I asked for caramel highlights. While she was applying it seemed like she kept applying a lot of the highlights and and I asked if she was leaving dark pieces as well and what the strategy was. She told me she was blending caramel highlights throughout in between my dark hair. As she continued the process she kept having her niece make more bowls of bleach. 3 bowls later she sets me under a HOT dryer for 25 minutes. We then go to the shampoo bowl where her niece starts to wash it out and then tone. At this point Julie comes back to the bowl to help tone and the two of them scrub toner through my head for 45 minutes. I could tell by their faces that something was wrong. She then has her sister come look at it after a hushed conversation. Her sister says "you wanted caramel right" to which I said yes. And she said "ok, good, it's caramel." Next Julie goes to style my hair. She brushes through my wet hair and then brushes in a ton of cream product. My hair is soooooo straight. She has me bend my head over and she proceeds to blow dry it - without a diffuser - just tousling it and mussing it with the hair. When I sat up all I could say was "where are my curls"? At that point her and the niece both start talking quickly about how I don't have curls because of the highlights but that they'll "come back". Her sister then suggests that we deep condition it. So she takes me back to the bowl and and puts conditioner on it then puts a shower cap over my head to send me out the door in. I then say "well I guess I won't be heading to happy hour" and she offers to slick my hair back into a wet bun, which we do. I literally left the salon after 3 hours of fumbling and bumbling in a wet bun. When I got home I rinsed it out and put alot of leave in conditioner in and covered my hair and went to sleep. Mind you, I still hadn't seen the color because it was wet and much darker as a result. The next morning I woke up and let my hair air dry. I was HORRIFIED. The bottom 2/3 of my hair is a dead, flat, fried, orangish caramel color. The top 1/3 is dark brown. No blending. No highlights. No caramel. Just dead, lifeless, destroyed hair. Only upside is that the top 1/3 of my hair is healthy because she didn't have sense enough to include it in the balayage. I sent her a picture and told her it was a terrible color and didn't look like it was done by a professional. I then asked her what products/process/volume she used as I was going to have to have someone fix it. Her response was "I'm sorry. How can I refund you." She then refunded me over Venmo. She used bleach 30 volume on my hair (aaacccckkkkk!!!!!!! If you know anything about curly hair or dark hair you should be cringing in your seat right now), and toned with 7n shades. It is evident to me that she is not an experienced colorist and knows little about maintaining the health of curly hair. I would not recommend this salon. My hair is ruined. Fair warning. read more

Joan and Julie KNOW curly hair! I have visited Tacoma Curly Salon twice so far and both experiences have been wonderful!! Joan has been my PCP (Primary Curl Physician), and she is magic with the scissors. I have witnessed Julie's work as well, and her clients look amazing when they leave. They listen to what you want, talk you through the process, and shape those curls to fit your face. They also have this wonderful curl conditioning cocktail they they use at the end....perfect! I got a curly cut recently and though the cut was alright, the styling of my hair was so bad and clearly the person cutting didn't know how to style curly hair. She left my bangs completely straight and brushed them out but tried to finger curl the rest of my hair, which my hair doesn't do very well with and it was clear that all my hair really needs is a good scrunch, but she was adamant and it did not turn out looking good at all, it's like she took all my curls away. I had to wash my hair again at home and restyle so it looked presentable. I'll start by saying the staff at the salon were nice and the atmosphere was good. However, I've never left a hair salon in tears, crying and feeling and looking ugly. This was my first time coming to this "curly" salon. The appointment was with Jaden for a wash and style and somehow I allowed them (Jaden and Joan) to talk me into a trim. Before scissors came near my hair I explicitly stated don't cut not much off, just the straight ends. Joan did my "trim" which was really a terrible cut I just didn't know it at the time. Once I was taken from under hair dryer and Joan attempted to style my hair, she stated how "cute" it was. Given that we were looking in the same mirror I was so taken aback that she could even say it was cute. I said to her that it was ugly and I wasn't trying to be a a**hole but that this was so ugly. They quickly stated I didn't have to pay and asked if I wanted them to rewash and let me style but I declined. I truly was so in disbelief and sad to see my hair the way it was. Once I got home to rewash and style my hair I noticed how BADLY chopped it was. The most unfortunate part is that because of how weirdly chopped it is, it's difficult to style and I can't even put it into a ponytail, all of which I was able to do before. It was so bad once my husband saw me he asked if the person who did my "trim" the "master stylist" had a license. I truly cannot believe I let them talk me into anything to do with scissors given this was my first time but I was trusting their "expertise", clearly too much. If you're a black woman, PLEASE don't come to this salon nor allow them to "cut/trim" your hair. One thing I found interesting is how the walls of the salon had nothing but images of beautiful black women with curly hair but it didn't seem like they had a clue about my black hair. I really hate leaving low reviews on places, especially a place I've been so many times, but I left my last appointment pretty heartbroken. I've been here a number of times and always been thrilled with the way my hair looks after, and they're great at getting curls to show in my hair that I just can't seem to match at home, so this time I was expecting a similar feeling. I went in with about 6 months of hair growth and the hope to try a new style, keeping my hair long and going for something with more volume. I said this to my stylist, Joan, along with your typical gesture of, I'd like it cut to about here, at a point on my neck just above my shoulders. I don't know where it got lost in translation, but the back of my head had already been cut short when I realized that almost an inch and a half above where I gestured is where my hair was at. I now have a cut that sits at about my chin, and not enough hair to try for the style I was hoping for. I'd just like to ask that maybe before starting, especially in the back where the client can't see, the stylist double checks where the client wants the hair to be cut to. read more

I did a little research and I hit the hair stylist lotto! I have curly hair and these sisters are the real deal...they know their stuff! I love how Joanie cuts and colors my hair and in addition gives me great advice on how to care for it afterwards. I love all of the cuts and colors that I have seen Julie do too. Fantastic!
