My cousin just had her wedding at the Kaaterskill, and I have almost nothing but good things to…read moresay. I'll start with the two negatives, though, just to get them out of the way: 1. The water in the guest rooms and kitchen smells like sulfur/farts/rotten eggs. I mean, it's extreme. Very, very extreme. All of the rooms have Jacuzzi's, and I just can't imagine submerging myself in one of those tubs with the smell of the water. Peeee-yew! 2. The venue is beautiful, but it's really up to the renters to make it what they want it. It takes a *lot* of work to set things up (benches for the ceremony, room for the reception, etc.), so you have to be prepared to put some sweat into the space. That being said, it was totally worth it to work hard. My cousin's wedding ended up being the most beautiful wedding I've been to in my life. It was also great to be able to rent out all of the guest rooms for the wedding party so we were all together. There's a giant/modern kitchen so you can cook or keep things cold in the fridge. All of the other living spaces are so totally kitschy. There are artifacts and knickknacks and weird things all over the place. I can't even begin to describe some of the things you'll find in the guest spaces...that's really part of the fun of staying here! Anyway, the landscaping is beautiful. And there are fainting goats! And a pig named Victoria! And chickens! And bunnies running everywhere. And you can have firewood delivered so you can make a bonfire and cook s'mores. Really I can't say enough about what a nice space this is. Hopefully one day everyone can rent out the rooms again and we can celebrate one of their anniversaries!

Erica is constantly improving the grounds so I imagine there are even more wonderful creations to behold than when we were there. However, new guests that are expecting a 5-star resort based on Google classification will likely be pretty disappointed. The main Inn is old and charming, but it and the adjacent property buildings are showing their age in a not-so-charming way. For example, two of our five guest rooms in Oak Lodge had broken heat, which the property was certainly aware of as they had placed space heaters in the rooms before our arrival. During our last day, there was no water at all in the Carriage House, so guests could not flush toilets or wash hands, even after bowling! Really basic features you would expect in even a roadside motel, such as tissues in guest rooms, were not provided. Toilet seats that needed replacing are mismatched, with oval seats on square front toilets, and the toilet cover in the main lodge was broken and not repaired during our stay. Despite being "pet-free," blankets smelled like dog. Despite the rustic accommodations, our family created our own fun together. Our reserved table in the dining room was uncomfortably tight for 13 guests, which was continually apparent during the slow food service. The amount of food at each meal was plentiful, but servers were poorly trained as they repeatedly failed to clear place settings from one course before bringing another course, and repeatedly miscounted orders bringing the incorrect number of soups, desserts, etc. Aside from some disappointing low points, such as the embarrassing frozen mixed vegetables being served as the "vegetable of the day," or uncut unripe honeydew wedges served as the fruit option, the meals were basic but acceptable fare.

Our bartenders for the evening were Brandy and Terri and I never saw them without a smile as they helped guests. The F&B Staff were - always attentive and willing to help with small adjustments. Management was attentive - out of sight, but ever present and accessible immediately through a quick text. Friday and Saturday nights, they have a bonfire going, with all of the ingredients required for s'more roasting neatly arranged in individual paper bags, next to wooden dowels, and brilliantly, hand wipes for sticky hands. While my husband is a camper, I am most certainly NOT, and I found this experience to be the perfect compromise for both of us. The enormous picture window in the cabin looked out to the woods. It was such a treat to wake up to the pastel colored sky through the trees as the sun rose, and then, after a full day of exploring the area and having a fantastic meal in downtown Hudson, it was lovely to unwind in nature. We arrived at 2:00 en route to Music Mountain for a concert to see if our room was ready. It was not. OK, we returned at 8:00PM and it took two people more than 15 minutes to check me in. The young man had said earlier that we have the room with the porch, as you requested. I did not request a porch. When the checking in process was nearly completed, it was made clear that our room was on the ground floor. I said that I definitely did not want to stay on the ground floor and asked if there was a room on the second floor. I do not think that the young man fully understood me as he showed me a floor plan with our room number (as evidence of a porch) and I repeated that we did not want a room on the 1st floor, but we were very tired and I gave up and took the key. The entrance to the room is on the corner of the porch - with windows on two sides. I was thinking about how anyone walking on the porch would definitely wake us up. The room itself was SAD. There were curtain rods, but no curtains, just blinds. The lighting was grim. There were three pillows in the king sized bed and the spare pillow in the closet was a queen. At 8:30 AM a staff member began using a leaf blower on the porch. So, we got out of bed, got dressed and left. Deeply disappointed. Never again. Two stars are for a clean bathroom.

Essentially, a man named Harvey Fite single-handledly took over 60 acres of Saugerties and built a giant bluestone sculpture in the center of it. The scale is incredible when you realize one man did it all himself, including hoisting the 14 foot, 9 ton stone he called FLAME in the center. Opus 40 hosts concerts, nature talks and walks, events, and more at this beautiful, serene space, so check those out. And if you're more inclined, just do what my mom and her friends do often (what I've only done once so far), and walk the grounds and take it all in.
