Nomz: I usually get the Huarache, it's so well made it reminds me of my mom's home cooking. The corn masa base is always the perfect texture, the bean spread is generous and it's a nice size. The cemita is probably the best I've had in NYC, the Oaxacan cheese is authentic and the milanesa was fried and breaded splendidly. And don't skip the breakfast burrito, the chorizo is so flavorful and the proportions are just right! Service: Nice and friendly staff. There's very limited space to sit; my friend and I sat at the bar which was sticky, I think from whatever resin sealed the wood. When 1 of the 2 tables cleared up, we moved there. There are about 2 tables and 4 stools and a long table to eat on. The wait can range from 10-12 minutes because of its freshness, but it's worth it. I don't have any complaints about the food and wait. The only thing I would hope they improve are the beverage selection. This place is the cutest! Food was very filling and felt authentic. If I lived in the area this would be one of my go to spots. I grabbed the Chicken Enchilada that brought side of rice and black beans and an Agua de Jamaica both of which were great ($12.99 and 3.00$ I believe). My friends got the 3 taco special for $11 and they were pretty happy. All of us were full at the end even with standard sized dishes. The lady serving us was super super accommodating (even with my friend's picky food habits!) and so sweet! She even brought out a knife and a lighter to cut and light my friend's birthday cake. What an angel! The spot itself is definitely more lowkey than most and a tad on the smaller side but cozy. My quesadilla was disheveled and oddly cold which made it difficult to eat. The lettuce also tasted like it was on the way out. Unfortunately the torta wasn't much better. The chicken milanesa was soggy and luke warm. Paired with the stale roll it made for a bland, unsatisfying sandwich. Kinda wish I stuck with Downtown Bakery or Paquito's on first instead. This place is the MOST Authentic Mexican I've had in NYC. As far as the quality of food, it blows away any of the fancier Mexican restaurants. Their tortillas (if you specify) are homemade-- chewy and fresh... almost like a pillow to hold all the nice amazing food! I always ask for their terrific pico de Gallo even though it's not on the menu ;). Their beans are tasty beyond belief. Diverse menu of elote (I like without the spice.) I can't even name the amount of specialities they have, you'll have to look at the menu! I wish I could try their mole sauce as I'm sure it's the real deal!-- I'm now vegetarian so obsess over their veggie tacos which are more than a taco! Went to their tiny (8 seater) hole in the wall restaurant at 438 E 9th St. between 1st and A and was mightily impressed by the cochinillo (suckling pig) taco. The beef taco was good too. Good amount of filling, a good 50% more than the typical hipster place. The home-made corn tortillas were light and flavorful; dare say some of the best I've had. I ordered the goat soup, thinking it was $3.99 rather than the $8.99 I paid. While I might have expected a bit more goat and vegetables at that price, I was glad I tried it: the goat itself was very tender and the red broth had an unusual, slightly sour, flavor that, once past the first few sips, was appetizing. Felt authentic. They offered me some tasty rice and beans too; guess that came with the soup? -------- Ok, I've since eaten here another four or so times, and had some dishes more than once, so I thought I'd update my review. The menu's changed since my first visit: no more goat soup. The cochinillo taco has never been quite as rich as the first time, and sometimes it a bit dry, but the flavor's always been good. I've had the shrimp taco three time, first time mouth watering, other times time plenty good. Last time the beef taco was totally missable. As for the yellow rice and black beans, the rice has ranged from delicious warm and tender to not quite warm and a tad dry; the beans were generally creamy and rich, once a bit less so. The guacamole was very mild, no kick whatsoever. The flavors of the al pastor--pork with pineapple--didn't quite meld. I've tried the chicken with mole poblano: a thigh in lots of rich gravy which had a slightly sour, slightly medicinal, taste, that didn't appeal to me. The corn tortillas have ranged from fragrant to decent: still worth the extra $1 in any case. To summarize, decent option with unpredictable quality control. read more

It was a hot summer day, so the air conditioner above the door was dripping like crazy. It was unavoidable to enter the restaurant. The air conditioner rain was hot too. Not sure why. I came around 8, 830 on a monday night and there was no one waiting in line and the place was empty. They seem to be more of a seamless operation than a place people actually go to. Steak burrito bowl was a good size. Lots of things inside, but lots more beans than anything else. The flavors were decent but nothing mind blowing.
