First time trying this truck and being a big birria fan, I wanted to try their birria quesatacos. The birria order comes with three tacos and a small consome for $13.50-sides and drinks not included. The taco size is pretty decent and they don't skimp on meat portions. The biggest drawback was the amount of grease. The tacos were drenched in grease and the consome was basically inedible because it felt like I was dipping an already greasy taco into more grease. That said, I would be hard pressed to give them another chance. read more

The food was super yummy, $11 for a meat filled quesadilla. I will say the chorizo was super oily, personally I like it but I know some people don't. (Torta was the same price) I will say that it was hard to find prices for anything either. They do have seating as well which was super nice. This place doesn't get enough recognition. In an area where there is on average 2 or more taco stands/businesses per block, this place stands out. I first visited when I wanted something more than the very available and tasty al pastor options around... El jefe has a great Carne asada. Not just acceptable. Great. Fast forward a few years - Jefé is in my regular rotation now, and I noticed that they have tacos Dorados de birria. This was a bit life changing. I've had Dorados before. I've had dorados birria before. But the crunch, the texture, the flavors. All from a truck that doesn't claim to specialize in them. I also noticed over time that his salsas are quite good. Complex, flavorful, and pairs well with the food. He has a self service guacamole that is quite good. In fact, he sells it! Here I am 8 years after writing my first review. Somehow, this truck keeps getting better and better with age. Every meat is downright incredible. Over time my favorite meats here have become the Suadero, cecina and pastor. Their pastor is one of the best in town and it's what I compare every other taquería to. In the past couple of years they started doing birria. Honestly, it's mind blowing. In a landscape that is now saturated with birrias, they stand out as one of the best. Birria tacos here are an 11/10. I wouldn't consider it authentic, because authentic birrias are mild and tame in flavor compared to El Jefe's birria. It's a flavor that curb stomps your taste buds in the best way possible. I am not a fan of three of the dishes here. The taquitos are surprisingly bland. Get a side of birria consomé to make them better. Their nachos and fries are disappointing. I wish they would use homemade chips instead of the factory made rounds. Fries could be better. A homemade fry would be killer. Everything else is absolute perfection here. I feel blessed to live within a block of this truck. read more

The meat was dry and the flavor just wasn't there, I didn't want to take it back and just finished it with the not so hot red chili which was okay. Tacos El Jefe SAVED ME last night! I had finished a shift at work and found myself hungry at 8:30pm. I was driving from downtown to my home in the West Adams area, so I didn't want to deviate from my route. Tacos El Jefe was perfectly located on Pico + Vermont, on my way home. Parking was tricky. Pico is a very busy street and finding a spot to park can be as rare as finding a hot dog salesman that uses venmo. There's a lot next to the truck, but it's reserved for 7/11 customers, they even have security! I parked there anyways, bought some sour patch kids, then headed to get tacos. To my surprise, they sold champurrado. I had been talking about it all shift long lol. I was happy. I ordered 3 tacos + the champurrado for a total of $6.50. The meattttttttty was amazingggggggg!!!!!!! Some of the best seasoning I've had from a taco truck! The tortillas get cold pretty fast, so that's the only way they could improve- make homemade tortillas. I loved the assortment of condiments they offered: about 5 salsas, lime, radish, and cucumbers. I think when it comes to street tacos, El Jefe hits that perfect trifecta of taste, affordability, and convenience. Are the ingredients high quality? No. But are the tacos good? Yes. Is the price good? Yes. Is it convenient? Yes. Even when the line is long, the food comes out fast. It also helps that the salsas are delicious and they're very liberal with the amount limes, radishes, salsa, pickled onions, and etc. they give you. They have about five different salsas, if you count the creamy guacamole. They have the usual suspects, cilantro and onions and also Pico de gallo. Thinly sliced radishes and pickled red onions. BEWARE! It's made to order, so, it's comes out piping hot!!! Plus, they wrap everything in tin foil and well, you know how that goes. So here we are... Tin foil flaps facing up at you. Ready to be opened ever so slightly. The last thing you want is a blast of hot steam in your face. Once you have it fully unwrapped, you get that first inhale of meat and and steaming corn tortillas. Best taco truck in LA! I have lived in Los Angeles for about 8 years and I have finally found a taco truck that I go to every time. Don't waste your time going anywhere else. The food is delicious, the prices are unbelievably inexpensive and the workers are really cool dudes. Today I was able to get the names of the guys that are at the truck every single time I go. Arturo is the boss and owner of the truck. Ray is his brother who is there every time I go and Fernando is the new guy who has been doing great. At the standard price of $1.25, I ordered two tacos: pollo/chicken and the suadero/beef (it's a delicacy to some). You'll note that both are a bit chunky and fatty. While I believe it's all about the toppings, I am very critical about tacos that have a ton of fat clinging to them. I'm not there to eat fat, which is why I was a bit disappointed in the meat. Then again, what should one expect for $1.25, right? The suadero was also incredibly disappointing, as I still believe Taco Zone holds the crown for the best suadero in the city. While I tried to add taste by adding cilantro, guacamole, and the green sauce, I could not get over the lack of flavor in both the meat and toppings. I didn't expect much from the tortilla as well. Parking is relatively tight here at hours, but can be found behind the truck. You'll note that they have the pastor on a rotating spindle, along with a watery horchata. As much as I wanted to appreciate this place I will be sure to opt out for the truck near Arlington or Taco Zone, and that's just preference. read more

When it comes to tacos I have lots of choices where I live: King Taco, El Flaming Taco, El Taurino and so on however this is the truck I find myself coming back to faithfully and its because of the way they choose to sell you a product that far exceeds the price they are asking for... In a world where you get what you pay for, this is one of the few places left where you can actually get more than your money's worth. Needless to say the food is delicious here. The salsa bar is my favorite part because they have everything I need to dress my taco perfectly depending on what mood I am in. The green sauce is saucy but not spicy just refreshing for when I am not in a spicy mood. But when I am, the red sauce has a precise smoky flavor that is just DIVINE when you add lemon. It is SO GOOD. It has just enough spice to get that kick but what you really taste is the smoky flavor. It's my favorite style red sauce which goes perfect with carne asada. I've had this Taco truck food alot and I absolutely love it they make amazing tacos, burritos, Sada fries and so much more that I just love!! And to top it all off the staff are all super friendly and work hard. And if you ever eat here that have this amazing green salsa that I love it's a bit spicy but delicious. I always get one of my two favorites and that the asada fries, I get them not with asada but I get them a mixture of chicken and al pastor. So delicious. Even my son loves their chicken tacos.
