I've been to Tacos El Patron so many times--it's become my go-to whenever I'm heading to Costco since it's right on the way! Their fish tacos are incredible and the portions are huge. Honestly, one taco can be filling on its own. I've also tried the shrimp tacos and enchiladas, and both are really good. My husband usually gets a burrito, and that's always amazing too. Definitely recommend checking this place out! Try to come early, especially on weekends, because it gets really packed. It's not a big of a place so gets busy, ambiance is very casual. read more

First I need to say that Jose rocks and was so so kind and the free birria taco he gave me was incredible. Best consommé I've ever had. Now for the bad news: I hate to write this review because everyone was so immensely nice but the super burrito was genuinely a let down and honestly difficult to finish. Problems: the burrito is enormous and incredibly mushy. So mushy that I literally couldn't lift it up without it flopping around. There is just zero structural integrity because the tortilla wasn't toasted/seared. The lengua was almost too soft which is crazy to say but the whole thing felt like baby food in my mouth. There was also no texture. Other than the meat everything else just tasted like one homogeneous mush. That also compounded with the flavors because they were all one mush as well. I couldn't tell there was sour cream in the burrito and it didn't taste like there was any salsa either. All to say there was nothing to cut through the fatty oily taste of everything else in the burrito. The tortilla was soft and oddly wet too. Overall, I cannot recommend the burrito here. It's not worth $20. How to improve: add more rice/lettuce/beans/something hard for texture (maybe even cook the meat longer to make it not so soft), and add more sour cream or lime or salsa to cut through the fat. Finally and most importantly grill or sear the tortilla at the end to give it some structural integrity. That portion size. The amount of meat. Looking at the picture always makes me crave tacos again and again and again. The meat, whether it was the pork belly or the carnitas, was so flavorful. Every bite was juicy and addicting - just kept wanting more bites after another. They had a sauce that my friend and I kept adding and it was very delicious. A little kick or a lot of spice really elevates the food even more. The super birria quesadilla definitely fulfills the price you pay for it and more. The beans are always solid, but this was the first time having the nopales (cactus) and they were surprisingly good. They were well seasoned and looked like green beans but had a springy texture. I really enjoyed our dinner here! I've driven by it for so long but never ate here. We finally decided to come here. It was a Saturday evening and we were craving Mexican food! The parking lot in front is small. There was one open spot so we grabbed it. I think there may be more parking out back but I don't know for sure. No street parking on Monument so if you strike out in the front lot, check in the back. We walked in and it was fairly crowded at 6:20 n a Saturday night. They seated us right away but it was the last open table - and it wasn't a great table, right by the front door and everyone waiting for take out or a table! But we were happy to be seated. They brought chips and 4 bottles of salsa in squeeze bottles. They were all delicious but one was super spicy so be on the lookout for that! They took our order, brought us water and our beers. All were very good. Then the food came! My 2 favorites were: the taco pork belly (pork belly, cilantro, guacamole and red onion) and the norteno taco (Anaheim pepper, cheese, carne asada, cabbage and onion). $7.25 each. Living in San Jose, I've tried many authentic Mexican food, so I didn't expect much from this area. but wow, was I proven wrong! The Birria is an must-try. I was initially skeptical of the high price, but the portions are massive and very filling--I was completely stuffed after just two. For the other tacos, the Taco de Pescado (battered fish) was a standout. It was loaded with veggies and paired perfectly with their chipotle sauce. The Taco Patron Shrimp was decent--a simple shrimp and cheese combo--but the guacamole that came with it was great. To drink, the Horchata had authentic, homemade flavor that wasn't overly sweet. It was a little grainy from the blended cinnamon, so I wish it had been strained a bit more, but the flavor was still great. On top of the food, the customer service was excellent, the space was clean, and the overall vibe was great, with full bar. Update 5/19: Came back here with my Sorority sisters. Horrible!! I was ignored when I walked in by the female manager who walked right past me and by the person standing in the front. Talked to Ricardo and he promised things would change. However.. it has not. He told my fellow Soror that she could get a small taste of a requested blend of a marg. I requested sugar on my rim. He brought her a full drink and me a tajin rim. I then asked for 2 plates for the nachos and salsa.. nothing was brought. So we had to remind him. While in the area, we wanted to try a place that my girlfriend's coworker recommended and more importantly had a good amount of vegetarian/pescatarian options for my girlfriend's restrictions for lent. The place was pretty unassuming, with a short parking alleyway next to a gas station. However the inside (which it seems like was renovated a year ago, was really nice and inviting. It was spacious with a great bar area and even an outside patio area for some choice in where you wanna sit. The servers were really nice getting us started with drinks, chips and salsa, and a slew of different hot sauce bottles. they ranged from mild, to pretty hot and my favorites were the salsa verde and orange (some type of habanero?) sauces. The menu was really well organized and easy to navigate. One of the cool things is that if you order just 2 or more tacos (which are pricy to be fair but ginormous and filling), you can order some free sides and they provide plenty of it. I ordered the Norteno and Vampiro tacos while my partner ordered the Pescado and Patron. Norteno: 5/5 The first one I tried and it blew my socks off. The star of basically all of the specialty tacos is the fried cheese on the tortilla. It was luscious and charred nicely and gave a great backdrop to all of the toppings regardless of what you choose. The norteno, other than the cheese is a standard carne asada with pepper and cabbage slaw essentially and was nice and refreshing to start. Vampiro: 10/5 One of my favorite tacos (or in this case tostadas) I have ever had. Essentially a suped up version of the norteno but exchange the slaw for street taco toppings like cilantro onions and guacamole. It was kind of overwhelming how good it was that a few bites in you get somewhat full off of the flavors. Pescado: 5/5 nice and crispy and invoked a lot of the vibes of getting fish tacos on the beach in SoCal. The pico really shone on this one + the orange sauce over top was really nice. Patron: 5/5 tons of juicy shrimp - very simple compared to the others but great nonetheless. Sides: 5/5 Refried beans were the star here as it had all of that greasy lard flavor that everyone loves. The charred onions and nopales were great as well. The agua Fresca we ordered was solid as well. Ultimately this surprised us in such a great way. It is up there with some of the best Mexican restaurants we've tried in the Bay Area and it's no doubt worth a drive to if you are ever around the Concord/Walnut Creek area. Small taqueria that has the vibe that it's family owned and operated. It's located in a small /tight strip mall and the space isn't huge, but there are a good amount of tables and a bar area. My brother's family loves this spot and we decided to eat dinner here because we were in the area shopping. The service was friendly. We were greeted and seating pretty much right away and they were very helpful with the menu. I ended up ordering two tacos, which allows you to get a free side, so I picked the beans. I got an asada taco and a pastor taco. They definitely don't skimp on the toppings and the meat was very flavorful. I'm a big fan of their salsas as well! They give you chips and salsa when you come in and dine there and they give you a couple of squeeze bottles of their other salsas to use with your meal. Because there is a bar there, there's a good selection of beverages, but I was taking it easy and got an order of their tasty horchata. Visited for a group lunch around 1 on Valentines and was blown away by this place. It was packed but we lucked out and grabbed a table just as another group was leaving. The parking lot was full so we had to park around the corner and walk over, both good signs that the place is well loved. Our server was very nice and we received our food very quickly. Also requested quesabirria with shrimp. This had beautifully-charred skin and was exquisite. Tacos El Patron is a restaurant on the Monument corridor near the 680. They got popular a few years back, and the birria is their top attraction. I ordered takeout and tried a few cuts of meat. The flavors were ok, the quesabirria was good but the consome is oily and lacks depth. The staff is friendly, and they remodeled and expanded their dining spaces. Check out El Patron to support a local business in the Pleasant Hill/Concord area. In fairness, takeout tacos do affect the tortilla flavor and texture. The cabeza and suadero need more flavor. Still good but very inconsistent! First photo of the enchilada plate from 5/25 everything was super fresh, you can see it in the photo. Today on 6/1 the beans, rice and asada in the enchilada were extremely dry (the refried beans looked and tasted like canned refried beans you buy from the store) so maybe they ran out of ingredients or it's been sitting all day and it's all they had left. My only advice is to come around early dinner hours (5-6 pm) that's when it's good. Any other time it's a real gamble with freshness, service and quality. read more

They used to just be a to go place but they made enough to expand, that tells you a lot about the place, it is delicious. The service is really good here. We have been asked multiple times if everything was ok and if it wasn't or if something was missing, they brought it out right away. I got their carne asada torta and a pork belly taco. The carne asada was well seasoned. The torta bread was well toasted with a good amount of mayo. There were only a few slices of tomatoes and avocado though, so I was hoping for more but the amount of meat made up for it. The pork belly taco was pretty much chicharrones. I had seen in other reviews that they recently remodeled, and it looked fantastic. It felt clean, inviting, and fun inside. The service was fast and very attentive. I appreciate waiters who don't hassle you, but also make sure you get refills on your drinks and check to make sure you're doing okay. They were all very kind here! They were out of the black mamba margarita that I wanted to try, but the house margarita was still delicious. I don't think you can have a good Mexican place if the margaritas are bad. Food wise, I had the vegetariano burrito smothered in green sauce. It was saucey, flavorful and delicious. My boyfriend got a burrito smothered in mole sauce which he also loved. We shared the chips and guac, and the chicken tostada. That was an underrated item which we can't wait to go back for. One of my favorite things here when we ordered to go was the salsa bar. Getting your own allows you to choose what types and how much you want, improving customer satisfaction and reducing waste all in one. When dining in you get squeeze bottles at the table. This place has gotten a lot better over the past few years. They expanded and now have an inside dining area. I appreciate that they serve free chips and salsa when you sit down. There's a bunch of different birria items on the menu like ramen, etc. My go to items are the taco patron and the fish taco. The birria tacos are also BOMB especially with the consome. I recently tried the enchiladas with red and green sauce which were also good, but I have had better enchilada plates elsewhere. The chile verde tostada was superb! The pork was soooo tender. Some of the pork was pretty fatty so if you like that I would definitely recommend. Also pretty bomb horchata and aguas fresca. It's pretty small inside but there usually isn't much of a wait. Love it! The lengua and cebollas asada grilled onions side are great. My favorite was probably the lengua street taco patron style. Service is great. Place is crowded. I sat alone at the bar. Tacos El Patron was poppinnnnnn' when we arrived around 12:30PM on a Saturday. We were feeling for something light after a moderate hike and tacos fit the bill. They have a small parking lot that seems to fit just enough of the patrons from the restaurant if it gets crowded. Otherwise, they may have parking in residential area in the backside. I think turnover for foot traffic is pretty quick, so when we went in, we were seated immediately. They started us some tortilla chips and salsa on the side that you can pair with their four different sauces (with varying spice levels). I like the green ones because they were more on the mild side, but added a nice flavor! We had a party of four - all opting for either burritos or tacos (just the standard stuff). For myself, I got two street tacos - one Pollo and one Lengua. If you order two or more tacos you can request for free sides, which we all did. I also got a guava lemonade and this turned out huge. My partner got a Horchata - it was delicious but also a liter big (a very shareable size). Order came really quickly despite how full the restaurant was. My Pollo taco turned out surprisingly really good. Some Pollo taco I've previously tried is more bland, but this restaurant makes it pretty flavorful and it still retains it juiciness! The homemade corn tortilla was soft. I kinda like how they serve their tacos in a single, slightly thicker than normal store-bought tortilla as opposed to two thin tortillas. As for the Lengua - I don't have beef tongue made this way that often, but this was delicious as well! The Lengua is slightly chewy, but pretty soft in texture. This might be one of the better tacos I've had so I can see why people love this place! Service is quick, yet friendly. Their menu is pretty extensive too, so plenty of choices.
