I had very high hopes for this little hole in the wall. I ordered chicken tacos. I was surprised how fast 6 tacos came out. I was very excited with the smells on my 6 minute drive home. Was very quickly disappointed. Chicken was very very dried. Some pieces inedible. Almost like it was cooked earlier in the day and reheated. Steak was chewy. Pork was seasoned very well but also dry. This place is a bit hidden in the area of OBT where you generally see all the food trucks lined up. Four stars to a good restaurant that offers delicious food with ok service and ok environment. We tried the tacos Al pastor and although they were not from a trompo, they were quite tasty. We also got the asada enchiladas and they were spot on delicious. My family and I had been here years ago! Back then this place has only 3 tables and was so small and crowded to actually enjoy a meal onsite. Years later, post quarantine... my partner and I decided to go out for some beer and tacos as our first night out. This place was the only place on the S obt strip that was open until late that day we came. Skeptical thinking the place was still going to be small and not spacious, we came in and took in a great surprise... this place has expanded and now is ample and welcoming. Two nice male servers tended to our table, they were very nice and explained the great offerings they have. I went to some tostadas and my hunny had some tacos! It was delicious and well plated! Geezzzz, this place has disappointed me I have visited this place before with pleasure but that's not the case now. Let's talk about the service, it was okay, that's all I can say on that. He's what was ordered, 2 steak taco dinners that came with rice and frijoles (beans). Two pupusas de queso (cheese). Chicken quesadilla dinner with rice and frijoles. This is the first time ever in a Mexican restaurant that I had to ask for salt so that I can season my food, mainly my steak tacos. No flavor at all. The tortilla on my tacos were instantly falling apart, not fun. The rice was not fluffy at all, boo and no flavor. The frijoles were a descent taste, doable. I was surprised on the pupusas, they actually tasted great. They stood out from all the food we ordered. I'm going to chalk it up that perhaps they have new cooks hence the lack of seasoning. This visit was enough to ward me off from returning. I should have taken photos of the food however they didn't make the cut..lol I'm doing an honorable mention on behalf of my daughter who used the restroom before leaving, the toilet didn't have the seat. The only reason they got one star was because my quesadilla was stuffed to the brink. I ordered a cheese pupusa and it was greasy with no taste. Which is weird because Mexican cheese is salty? My quesadilla was packed but tasted like burnt tortilla and non salted butter. My beans tasted bland and my rice was hard. Like maybe it was sitting out and they recooked it on the skillet? Rice also, had no taste. The only thing I ate with taste was their salsa. I used the salsa to flavor everything I ate. My friends got salted beef, no salt at all. Just meat. They had to use salsa as well and even then it wasn't good at all. Once we walked in, we could feel how hot it was in the restaurant. The back of the restaurant was even worse. I understand they have an open kitchen but with how hot it's been lately, it was cooler outside than in the restaurant. (Yesterday was 106 degrees outside) we all were wearing t shirts and shorts and it was still hot. To put it into perspective, they have ice pops in the front and when I went to grab one, there was "steam" coming off excessively for a straight 10 minutes while we waited for our checks. The service was *okay* because I've had worse. (Have I? No yeah, I have. But he was definitely close.) He only gave us one cup of water for the whole table even though we all asked for water. I understand some asked for an horchata but that's not hydration since it had so much cinnamon. It made them feel thirstier. When we asked for a refill and 2 extra cups of water to share, again he only brought one. We also ordered in Spanish to make it easier for him and he looked at us dumbfounded like he didn't know what language we were speaking. Overall we didn't like this experience. The last 2 times I came here they closed before the time. Once, I came here with a friend and they closed 2 hours before. Once I came by myself for lunch and they were closed at 4pm when the time says 11pm. I understand circumstances where people call out or something happens with the kitchen, I work food service it happens; at least post a sign or something. Definitely not coming here again unfortunately. Third time was definitely the charm to say never again. read more

Today My family ordered takeout--fried fish, grilled steak, al pastor taco, chorizo taco and two taco kid orders. Besides the al pastor and steak (which were okkk), everything else was just so bad! I was really disappointed! I wish I would've tasted the food at the restaurant instead of my house bc I would've returned everything! I've ordered the fish one time before and it tasted amazing- today though, had NO seasoning and had a weird "dirty" aftertaste like it hadn't been cleaned properly. I couldn't even eat it after a few bites. They also forgot my rice- but I didn't mind after I tasted my kids rice. The rice was broken up into pieces and some bits were harder than others. Needless to say my kids only ate half their food. My husbands steak came with a slice of cactus, grilled green onion and jalapeño. They looked at tasted so old, like they had been grilled days ago. The chorizo taco was just sooo greasy, the tortilla was soaked in oil. I wasn't going post a pic & gross anyone out with my "picked through" food, but I'm posting to prove that I did order and I'm not just making a review up. Thanks to Yelp, we found this restaurant since the original place we were going to, was closed for a holiday and we wanted someplace not too far, that tasted good, not too expensive and most importantly, food that Honey can eat. From the outside, it looked like a hole-in-a-wall type of place, but it's much larger inside. Though the name is Taco Express, it's name is deceiving - much more than tacos and it's not exactly quick but then again it was way past 1 pm for lunch so I was hungry! Ok, they were a bit slow but it's not a fast food restaurant. The food itself was good, very good prices but not gluten free friendly. Honey ordered fajitas with corn tortillas but the corn is not pure corn, it's with wheat flour too, but he said the beef itself was quite good. I actually ordered a BBQ taco plus chicken taco though I topped it with some of hubby's sour cream and lettuce since he can't have dairy. The BBQ was very tasty!! If it weren't for taking my husband's toppings, it'd be boring tacos. Our waiter mentioned I could go up to the bar for the toppings, and it was essentially the various sauces yet I'm a wuss for hot sauce and I skipped the vegetables there since was not much left and was bottom of the barrel. Overall, Tacos Express is a run-of-the-mill taco place. But first, it is in an easy to find location right off the side of the road. However, parking is a bit of a challenge as there are many spots that are reserved for other businesses and the lines aren't painted well - beware. The service was great - everyone was attentive, quick, and happy through our whole visit. It looked to be the same around the restaurant; there were two servers handling everyone, which seemed to work out well. Also, the prices are great, nothing fancy here! The food, however, wasn't as exciting. Everything was very basic and tasted like it was from a can or had been sitting for a long period of time. The enchiladas didn't have much flavor and were covered in so much cheese it was difficult to find the chicken. The appetizer was quite similar where everything seemed like it was a a second thought then thrown on the table. We were feeling munchy and in the mood for some really authentic Mexican tacos. You know the kind with the soft flour shell, fresh diced onions and cilantro and savory meat fillings. Usually these kinds of tacos can be found for a good price from a little hole in the wall not your fancy spots. This place was a pleasant mix of a hole in the wall and a fancy spot lol. I tried the carne asada (steak) and chicken tacos. The tacos come only with meat no cheese unless requested. This was fine as I had all my taco toppings from their self serve bar: pickled veggies, cilantro, onions, pico de gallo and salsa verde. I tasted their hot and medium salsas just because and they had great flavor. Warning: the hot salsa was blazing so be forewarned unless you like the flames stay away. My guest had the carne asado burrito and it was ginormous! Bursting with meat, rice and beans with guacamole, pico de gallo and sour cream on the side. It was drizzled with more crema and sprinkled with crumbled white cheese. Next time I will take pics of the food but as I said we were munchie! Overall the food was very flavorful and it honestly is a fantastic value for the quality and quantity. Our server was very nice and sweet. She was learning english and so she gave us a chance to practice un poquito espanol while we taught her the english word for items like "straw". There was a little mix up with the food but she was profusely apologetic and it was immediately corrected. The decor was cute and looked pretty authentic. Our Uber driver seemed a bit confused as to where we were going but when we got there, she saw the menu posted outside and asked, "is this place good?" while my fiancé and I could only say, "we hope". If I could see my uber driver now, I would have insisted she come in with is because Taco Express was muy bueno! If you have the time, you can certainly get the friendliest waiter service. If not, you can carry out in a jiffy. There is a fixings bar with lime, cilantro, onions, pickled onions, along with three hot sauces. I loved how the sauces were clearly labeled, indicating how spicy each sauce was. They serve chips and salsa on the house and while we looked over the extensive menu, we ordered queso fundido with chorizo and between a choice of flour or corn tortillas, opted for the corn. The cheese was served in a cast iron skillet and chorizo stuck to the melted cheese as it made its way into our mouths. Definitely a good portion and was more than enough for the two of us. I ordered the al pastor tacos and asada tacos in corn tortillas, and asked for rice and beans to come along side. For $.50 you can make your tacos supreme; adding lettuce, tomatoes, and sour cream. If not, you got the fixings bar. There's a wide range of sodas (in glass bottles) to chose from and plenty of beer and even micheleda option as well. Came here alone for lunch to grab some Tacos. The reviews looked good so I figured why not. However I didn't read all the recent comments... this place has a few issues. One: The Service The customer service is terrible, I was sat at a table and asked for a booth, the restaurant had all of 3 people and she goes "I don't know, oh, okay". There was absolutely no "lunch rush" during or after my meal. The staff was much more concerned with talking and laughing then serving, she asked me if everything was okay once which was the only redeeming thing from the customer service perspective. Two: The Food The tacos came with literally JUST meat, no lettuce pico de gallo, nothing. She says they are around the corner in the salsa bar, never had "street" tacos with only meat. Asked for beans and rice, they don't have a combo platter, the beans were okay almost a little sweet and the rice was great. The chips were awful, they might be house made but they are like pita chips, very thick. The salsa 110% is from a can and was in a very small portion cups. The tacos were only remotely enjoyable when I added all the fixin's you'd expect. The beef (carne asada) was WAY over cooked and crunchy. I figured this is called Taco Express so you'd get a great taco but I was just disappointed, maybe they make something besides tacos well? In summary, if you want bad service coupled with mediocre Mexican food this is your stop. This place has good tacos no doubt, but are they THE best? I give this place a 3.5 rating. Why? Because carne asada tacos are decent. The carnitas are good though!
