Staff: friendly Ambiance: moderately live What a special special place - from the moment I walked in, I was seen and assisted (I don't think I've ever been greeted so warmly!) The diversity of seating and the space are amazing - gentle music dances behind the symphony of a multitude of conversations and the studious clanking of pots and pans from the cooks; all while several sports channels silently dress the tv screens. A solid turn around from order to table and every bite was delicious (I didn't want to miss a crumb!) While eating I observed several groupings of individuals reuniting in what felt like a familiar way - as a first-timer, and solo patron, I felt like I fit in. I haven't been here since the 70's. I moved to Honolulu and spent 35 years there. This establishment was on Powell Street. They now serve breakfasts and sandwiches along with their steaks. I ordered my Patty Melt and it was delicious, with the cheese and grilled onions. It also came with French fries. The service was quick and efficient and professional, love the light wood as it was such a fresh surroundings, my lunch including my beverage was under $20 not including tip. Get the market price ribeye plate. medium rare! just perfect and juicy and the fat of the meat is so tasty, with just the right amount of oil (natural oil from the fat) mixed in with their house seasoning. i loved this. it's market price so it can vary. it's good. I ordered this and it was $10 more than the "famous tad's steak" which is the house steak and I thought it was worth it! Also ate some of the "famous tad's steak" and the ribeye was more premium. I miss the good ol days when Tad's was in the last spot on Powell Street and it was so old fashioned and I had lovely memories there with my parents. Came here for a private event so we rented out the party room. This place is very nostalgic and it still has that same Tad's Steak feeling as the old location. Service was a bit slower, but maybe because we were in the party room it was a bit different. You can never go wrong with the classic steak and baked potato. I would come back again. read more

I like this new (to me) location - it's brighter and appears more spacious but I do think they cram in too many chairs for the tables so we had to do some rearranging to sit at our 4 top. The food is as good as ever and at reasonable prices for the portions served. The service is what keeps this review at just good rather than great. I was charged for an item I didn't order (a glass of milk?) and they forgot to give me my salad so I had to go after it. Nice and friendly staff, but not as attentive as expected. I would still recommend if you are around Union Square area looking for a solid meal. They do have something for everyone and the space is suited to accommodate large parties. They do charge a 50 cent surcharge on eggs at the moment, which I'm not sure if it is necessary anymore since egg prices have come back down to earth. I went for breakfast and the environment was pleasant and clean. You order at the counter and seat yourself. They give you a buzzer to alert you when your food is ready; however, the guy brought my food out to the table and just took the buzzer with him. The chicken fried steak with sausage gravy was good with hash browns, scrambled eggs, and toast. Coffee was excellent and comes with one free refill (ask for your receipt). It's pretty much self-serve but they will bus your table when you are done. I plan to return to try their steak before I head back home. It's good for solo diners. I paid around $26.60 for breakfast. No tip needed due to the self-service nature though you can leave a buck or two for bussing the table. read more

While my friends ordered a rib eye and country fried steak, my eyes battled with my stomach and had to make a compromise. My eyes wanted steak and my gut won with the tuna melt and fries...and a paloma. My food was great, I took half the tuna melt home for a midnight snack. I'm taking an educated guess that due to the lack of conversation in the beginning part of our meals, my friends enjoyed their food as well. I have never really thought of Tad's as a "Steakhouse". As a child we would eat breakfast at Tad's and often come back later for dinner. Steak was big people's food and I always ate from the "diner" part of the menu. Fast forward several decades and I am in awe of any restaurant, diner, or steakhouse that can stay relevant and in business in the ever changing and finnicky environment that is San Francisco. Yes, they have moved, yes you order at the counter, yes the decor has changed but at it's core is the same experience of a place to eat for families, movers and shakers and anyone that sees the value of dining the way it used to be. 11.03.2024 - Dinner with friends. Every Sunday, I'm in downtown SF doing volunteer work and I would always pass by Tad's. Thinking this place is just another tourist trap spot, I've ignored it. Until one day, my girl friend told me about their wings. I could never pass up the chance to try some good chicken wings. So, I've put my personal thoughts aside and decided to try their wings. Sure enough, they didn't disappoint! Super crunchy, well seasoned and adding jalapeños on top was truly the icing on the cake. I love and only eat spicy food. Tad's wing hit the spot! The wings are a tad bit (no pun intended heh heh heh) on the pricey side, but it's totally worth it! I've also tried their ribeye (forgot to take a pictures) and it was pretty good too. Happy to see this place is back, a little walk away from the original location! Tads is an sf staple, I grew up coming here with my family as a little kid. While it's pricier now, the actual new renovated restaurant is so nice. The staff is so attentive and friendly. Food came out pretty quickly, their salad is good. One thing remains the same (with the exception of the location) is Tad's Steak House. They were forced to move their location to Ellis St (around the corner) because of increased high cost to remain on Powell St. The owner is still the same, great service, friendly, the grill set-up in front as you enter (just as before) and the food is just as I remember - very good If ever in SF pay this fine establishment a visit. read more
