I've read the other reviews here, which is what prompted us to post one. We had a great experience with Tahoe Bear Box. It was installed about a week ago and no issues. We used their online portal to pay for the box and filled out the pre-installation paperwork with photos of where we wanted it installed. We got an email response within a couple business days that there were no issues with the location. Then we received a phone call the day before they installed it. From payment to install was within a week. The box looks like it was installed perfectly. So far, no animals have figured out how to get in. I was a little put off by paying for the whole thing prior to receiving any kind of service. But it worked out great. Pay with a credit card if you're worried about that kind of thing. We put off buying one for years because of the price. I think it would've payed itself off when we compare the cost of the damage we have had to repair due to bears and raccoons. We should've reached out to these guys years ago. read more

For purchase and installation they are on the ball. Unfortunately any customer service post sale is a bigger struggle than the bears have opening their boxes. They don't answer their phone and the answer to their newer design handles that the bears can now open is to add another security handle to the newer design. I sent 3 emails and called 5 times, the owner said he "would try to call me". Nope, left me in the lurch to find a solution. If they allocated 1 person for 1 or 2 days a month visiting customers that have problems it would go a long way and they would probably end up with more customers and certainly more happy customers. read more

We used this company in the past on a previous property and didn't have any issues. Unfortuantely, that wasn't the case recently. We just moved and need to get a bearbox installed - we were offered a $200 discount on a box since they didn't have the color we wanted. We had to hold off on the purchase for a month. We came back to reinstate the estimate and they REFUSED to honor the last estimate - only offering $100 off and cash payment. We asked them why it was worth it to them to lose a sale for $100 (see their response below) they honestly don't care about their clients (even returning ones) or honoring their estimates. Bears have figured out how to get into their boxes. Took multiple calls and emails to even get a response. They claim they have a fix, but will get to it "at the start of the next month". They said this in January, February, and now April. Still no visits. I'm not sure they actually have a fix. read more

We purchased a Bear Box from this company 8 years ago. The only problem we had then was that they installed it at an angle, so the box has always leaned to the side. It's not vertical. But in the last year, the bears have learned how to get into the box. The company knows this and states they will provide a fix for this issue. We called and wrote them repeatedly asking for this fix. Each time we were told someone would call and schedule this for us. No one ever called. Then after a month of calling and writing, we received a bill. I called to try to talk to someone at the company and ask why I was receiving a bill when nothing had been done and I never received a scheduling call. The person answering the phones is only a phone service. They forwarded a message and THEN AND ONLY THEN did I receive a return call. The man returning the call literally YELLED at me this "I WASTED MY TIME DRIVING ALL THE WAY TO INCLINE VILLAGE, an HOUR DRIVE, TO FIX YOUR BOX YESTERDAY, NO ONE WAS THERE. YOUR BOX DIDNT NEED FIXING. IT IS MY VACATION. PAY YHE BILL WE SENT YOU". This person would not let me nor my husband say anything. He called twice, yelling at us and then hanging up on us without allowing us to say a thing. Take my advice and do NOT hire these rude and nasty people who will send you a fraudulent billing. read more

I purchased two boxes from Randy. The boxes themselves are nice, but the installation quality is totally subpar; both boxes were not installed straight and one is extremely loose in the ground, all within a year of installation. I attempted to address the issues with Randy, but after around six months of promising he would send a guy out to fix it (and it not being fixed), Randy blew up on the phone at me yelling about how he had allready sent his guy over three times to look at it. (So...why the heck didn't you have him fix it the first time?) In the end, on the apparent fourth time his employee went out to look at the boxes, Randy decided that it was not an installation issue but that the boxes had been damaged by a snow plow. My boxed were not damaged by a plow, I don't have my driveway plowed and the boxes are set well back from the road. Randy appears to be blaming snow removal services in order to avoid taking responsibility for the poor quality work of his employees. Don't waste your time or money dealing with this guy. read more

We just had our 2nd bear box placed by this company. Quick efficient job each time, and the box works perfectly, never had any trouble with bears again. It's nice to be able to put your garbage out as you need to, instead of storing it in the garage, having to get up early to put it out on garbage day, and always risk having to pick up trash strewn all over the street, not to mention risking a bears life by allowing them to become accustomed to human waste in their diet, and eventually end up being euthanized for being a problem bear. Only complaint is the price is not cheap! read more

I had a fantastic experience with Tahoe Bear Box. After calling a few vendors listed on the TTSD recommended list, I selected Tahoe Bear Box because of the easy-to-use pull handle. All the other companies used a detachable key that I didn't particularly care for. The front office was efficient and friendly. I was sent a quote via email and once I confirmed, they scheduled installation. Shawn, my installer, was very communicative during the whole process. He made sure I had permission from my HOA, set expectations on timing, and text me pictures of the completed work when he was done with the job. All around easy transaction and would recommend this team for a bear box. read more

Super disappointed in this company. I called over the winter (knowing that we would have to wait until the ground unfroze, but wanted to get on their schedule) to add a second box on our property. They never got back to me. I had to follow up multiple times. Once I did touch base with them, I told them I wanted the same box that we previously had installed 2 years prior. He said no problem and that they would install the first week of May. They did and then sent me an invoice that was double the price as the one 2 years ago. I called the office to see what happened, and her response was..."this is the price now". Super unprofessional and rude. I specifically told them I wanted what I previously had so they had to look up my account and see what I previously ordered. You would have thought they would mention the price doubling. Very disappointed in the way they run their business. read more

The worst. The worst. Choose ANY Bear Bin company EXCEPT this one. [ SEE LIST of cos. @TTSD: waste101.com/bear-aware/ ] This box is NOT bear-proof. A bear has broken into ours twice, leaving trash all over the place. The owner of Tahoe Bear Box NEVER responds to our calls to please fix the latch, even tho our contract says they will replace it at no charge. The owner is MIA. Someone answers the phone and says he'll be right there, but weeks pass and we are still stuck with an expensive bear box that does NOT keep bears out. Not to mention that we can't have trash pickup! Tahoe Bear Box Company is a SCAM. It doesn't keep bears out and when we ask the co. to fix it, they are a NO-SHOW. Do yourself a favor. Any other company is your best bet when a bear bin is needed. read more

Tahoe Bear Box refuses to work with your local hauler on installing the proper bear boxes for residential collection. They have been asked numerous times to stop selling boxes that can be accessed from the top. They leak, freeze, and continually cause collections issues. Beware of them selling these to you. read more

Buyer beware - this is an unethical company and you will regret using them. I contacted Randy Stanaway for a bear box installation for a vacation home where I would not be there at the time of installation. In fact, I sent several emails making sure he did NOT install the box in a certain location off my driveway. I asked him to send me a picture of the location in advance of installation so there was no miscommunication. Of course, he never did this and installed it in the EXACT location I told him NOT to install (this location is the "easy location" as it's a flat area but not so great in the snow when the city snowplow guys cover up that area with snow). Randy did not admit his error and was extremely unprofessional when I showed him our lengthy email thread about my specific location request. To add further insult to injury, he charged my credit card over $200 his invoice. I think he thought I didn't go thru my credit charges - this is an extremely shady company. I recommend exercising caution if you still dare to do business with them. There are plenty of other bear box companies. I recommend any of these over this company. They are lazy and unethical. read more

This was just a terrible installation. The box was in the wrong place, it was not straight, it was absolutely terrible and we spent the whole next day digging it out, re-cementing and placing it where we had first asked, and straight, not leaning sideways. I saw the reviews and told my husband not to use Randy, but he did anyway, just being in a hurry. Please read the reviews, I could not find a positive one and wish I did not use this company. read more

STAY FAR AWAY FROM - Tahoe Bear Box Company and Owner Randy as he is rude and a bully on top of not doing the job expects to be paid for. He was advised on the day he installed the posts for the boxes that the place HE WAS CHOOSING was not the correct place for the bear box placement but he didn't like the place he was hired to install the boxes because it had large rocks and was too difficult for him to handle so he chose despite being told it was not the correct place to place it where it was easy for him. The bear box is now installed along side the road at the bottom of a turn where cars from behind can't see cars ahead and in winter it is icy and narrowed by snow so stopping quickly is very difficult. This location was specifically excluded because it would be a hazard and dangerous for home owners to safely use the box to dispose of trash. Before the bear box was put on top of the post he was advised both with a note that was placed at the post and then verbally by an HOA Board member that it was the wrong location he became loud, derogatory, claiming Board members were at fault because they couldn't make up their minds when he fully knew where he was expected to put the bear box but didn't like the location. He was not hired to put the bear box where it was easy for him and he like the spot - he was hired to put it where he was told to put it. To top that off he additionally claimed that a Board member had said it was the correct place. The Board member didn't know the location but did know where he was putting it wasn't correct - he was told that! He then himself marked the location with paint and told the next Board member that it was clearly marked and had been told that was the location. He is a liar on top of a bad business man and as you read unethical as well. Stay clear if you are getting a bear box - he and his company are not a good choice at all. read more

Like his name, Stanaway, you are better off just if you just Stayaway. He will tell you what he thinks you want to hear in order to get the job and then do it how he wants to, even if that means giving you something other than what you agreed upon. This may work for some, perhaps even most, people, but save yourself a much-higher-than-it-should-be chance of a miserable combative relationship where you try to get Randy to do what he agreed to do and just go to one of the many other honest and reliable bear bin companies. read more

The owner was rude and refused to stop installation when we told him the bear box was in the wrong place. He told our HOA manager that he was going to finish the install so he could bill it. So he didn't stop when we requested. REALLY? Why not stop and help make it right? He had no interest in that approach. Now we have to hire someone else to put it right. So disappointed, annoyed, and dismayed that a company doing business this way is the ONLY one in the area? read more
