I was made aware from one of the historians that there was as many as six or more Chinatowns in the Truckee area from the Chinese laborers that built the transcontinental railway. The jail itself was originally a one story building with two cells for law breakers housing two persons per cell. The constable had the office outside of the cells in a separate room. Heating was made available by holes through the walls above where the constables office was. They found out the need for additional cells for women and children offenders were needed and added an addition upstairs, so there were two additional cells added to a upper level. The historical group is in the process of getting a landmark designation for this site. Quite a bit of relics is being housed and displayed here. Worth a visit to see a bit of Truckee's past

We saw the signs pointing to the jail on our way to lunch and decided we would check it out afterwards. I'm glad we did. In short, it ended up being the highlight of our visit. It's a small, cramp building on the ground level with a slightly larger upstairs. I cannot remember his name, but there was a volunteer there (docent, I believe they're called) and he happily walked my Wife and I around and told us all about the history and even a few stories about some of the "inmates" and how their stays went. I highly recommend you check this out and take the time to speak to the volunteers. They all seem happy and eager to tell you everything you'll ever want to know about it. If you can, drop a few bucks in the donation box. It helps keep the place going.

He has an incredible knowledge of Virginia City and Northern Nevada history, but he shares it in a way that's engaging, funny, and easy to follow. His sense of humor was the perfect mix of clever and classic jokes, which kept both the adults and the kids entertained! Before we even stepped into the mine, Gary sat us under a tree and told the story of Virginia City and The Comstock Load. I've lived in Northern Nevada for years, and he still taught me things I had never heard before! It was a great reminder of just how much fascinating history we have right here in our own backyard. I also appreciated how patient and thoughtful he was with everyone in our group, especially the children and those who needed a little extra time walking through the mine. He made sure everyone felt included. As a bonus, Gary is also an author! I ended up buying one of his books (I collect children's books for my office), and he has written other books too. I may have to buy the others with my next visit. Whether you're visiting from out of town, or you've lived here for years, the Chollar Mine Tour is absolutely worth experiencing. To my nerdy delight we came across a very small train car that said Truckee Railroad Museum. Well, don't mind if I do. Its small, very small, for a museum. However, I took in every little corner. I sat in the little sleeper cabin. So cool! It even has where the toilet would be. Nelson was the volunteer who was working that day and dare I say he and I would have become best of friends if I lived in the area. I loved learning about the logging trains and the First Transcontinental Railroad. I knew a few interesting stories from my study of the Donner Party and other stories of people stranded in the snow. Nelson and I couldn't get enough of talking train history. I loved it! He even gave a few local tips on places to visit while we were in town for the weekend. If we hadn't come in we wouldn't have done half of the great things we did. I'm a history dork. I will never deny it. I love it so much. You can count me on coming back to Truckee again and again.

The story of the Donner Party (1846-1847) [Truckee CA]…read more The Visitor Center isn't very big but nice... it features exhibits highlighting the Emigrant Experience, the Donner Party, the Land of the Washoe, Chinese construction of the railroad, and early motoring adventures over Donner Pass. The park rangers are informative and helpful. I was able to stamp my travel book with the name of the park and image of a prairie wagon. Clean bathrooms. Everything we've wanted to learn about the Donner Party were explained to us by the park volunteer who gave us a free one-hour tour. Historical tours are offered at 11:00a and 1:00p. Thanks, Ron! Very informative! Included with the tour is a short walk to the Murphy Cabin. The inscription on the rock read "The face of this rock formed the north end and the fireplace of the Murphy Cabin." It also listed the names of the members of the Donner Party, those who perished and survived (see photo). Donner Pass is now fairly easily traversed, but the Donner Party were up against feet of heavy snow, and the wagons they were traveling in were no match for a modern four wheel drive. I was born in Grass Valley, California, so Reno has been part of my life for as long as I can…read moreremember. As a kid, driving into town felt like arriving somewhere magical. Back then, the casino doors were wide open. You could hear the constant soundtrack of coins pouring out of slot machines before you even stepped inside. Maybe it's nostalgia talking, but there was just something about Reno in the late '70s and '80s that felt electric. I've got more memories in this town than I probably should admit. When I was 17, I somehow wandered into a casino, got free drinks, and not one person asked for an ID. Different times... or maybe I just had the world's worst fake mustache. Either way, I survived, and apparently so did the casino. My first marriage happened in Reno. I've played golf here, stayed in a penthouse overlooking the river and the casinos, wandered downtown with family, and now I've brought my son here to make a few memories of his own. Every visit seems to add another chapter. Of course, you can't come to Reno without stopping at the famous arch. It's iconic. During the day it's cool. At night? That's when it really comes alive. The lights, the energy, the people it just feels like Reno. Now, I'll admit I'm an old-school guy. I remember when casinos practically begged you to come inside. You'd get steak and eggs for $1.99, and somehow it was actually good. Drinks were free, people were winning enough coins to need a bucket, and every slot machine sounded like it was celebrating somebody. These days you slide your money into a machine, blink twice, and somehow you've just made a generous donation to the casino's remodeling fund. The funny thing is, Reno has changed, but in some ways it's gotten even better. These days I come for the food just as much as the lights. Yelp has introduced me to little hole-in-the-wall restaurants that looked like they'd fail a beauty contest but absolutely crushed it in the kitchen. One place had us wondering if we took a wrong turn... until the food showed up and suddenly we were planning our next visit before we'd finished the meal. Fancy casino restaurant? Fantastic. Tiny local diner with faded paint? Also fantastic. Reno's food scene doesn't care what the building looks like it just shows up and delivers. So yes, stop and grab your picture under the Reno Arch. It's part of the experience. Then put the phone away, wander around downtown, enjoy the lights, take in the river, and most importantly... go eat somewhere the locals recommend. The house may always win, but if you come for the scenery, the memories, and especially the food... you'll leave feeling like you beat the odds. Five stars. Some things change. Thankfully, Reno still knows how to make a trip worth remembering.

Visitors love to take pictures of it, near it, in front of it etc. It looks great during the day but at night is when it really shines!
