Recently went to Tai Hoa to order a whole roast pig for an upcoming event. My partner and I had tried samples of roast pork from other known places like Little Saigon, House of Wu, and Mandarin kitchen, and we enjoyed Tai Hoa the most! I feel that typically the seasoning for roast pork is only surface level, but the seasoning at Tai Hoa was throughout every bite. It was very moist as well, but the only thing that could be a touch better if a crispier/meltier skin texture. For the purposes of the event, we also needed a whole roast pig but also wanted it cut in advance for ease of eating, as cutting it at home gets too messy. The other roast pork places we visited above does not cut in advance, but Tai Hoa does that for an additional $20 fee. It's well worth it to avoid the clean up hassle! Whole pigs came in 3 different sizes, and you have to order early (at least one week in advance). Heads up they only take cash! They do have an ATM onsite however. First time truly trying Tai Hoa and it is a good alternative to other roasted meats shops such as House of Wu Located in St. Paul, this Vietnamese establishment serves the traditional roast pork, duck, crispy pork belly and a few other classics. Prices are slightly cheaper to House of Wu and it is opened a little earlier. Ordered: - Roast Duck (3.5/5). Duck is moist and fresh. Not as succulent as others I've had but is tasty regardless. The duck sauce that comes with it is consistent with other places - Roast BBQ Pork (3.5/5). Big thick cuts of meat. Flavor is a little lacking but is perfect with some light soy sauce and fluffy rice - Crispy Pork Belly (3.5/5). Has a nice three-layer texture but the flavor was a bit lacking and fatty. My family often go to Tai Hoa for BBQ, but I've never really been inside myself to make the purchase. Wanted to treat myself for my bday in July (I'm just catching up on reviews now), so my boyfriend and I bought roasted duck, roasted pork, and BBQ pork. The duck was great and satisfied my cravings. The roasted pork was on the dry side and the skin was not that crispy even in the airfryer. I was pretty neutral on the BBQ pork as well. I think I would recommend their duck the most. There were other things such as banh bao and goi that were so enticing, but I had to practice self control. Remember to bring cash when you come here! Park in the back as well. The parking lot is chaotic though, especially if it' busy. I did speak Viet to the person working there and she was nice. Whole roast duck: Lacking flavor, dry, box of meat seemed small in comparison to whole bird prior to chopping - and I've bought plenty roasted birds to-go in SoCal Little Saigon, SF Chinatown, and Saigon itself to know a thing or two about how full a box should be from one dead duck. Cha lua: Full of filler to point of being spongy and gray rather than firm and lightly pink with pork. Chà bông: The only saving grace - but cha bong is something I could make as a kid. My mom thought it was underflavored, though. Popular little joint for Vietnamese barbecue meats to-go. We grabbed an order of a whole duck to try, along with two tubs of chà bông (shredded dry-fried pork) and cha lua (silky pork sausage roll). Will write more once we've dug in. Meanwhile, I need to unload the photos from my phone. The roasted duck was neither juicy nor flavorful. The meat was tender enough, but it entirely lacked the savory, slightly sweet juiciness we expect from a Vietnamese-roasted bird, especially one fresh out of the roaster. It was serviceable - while it didn't add much to the meal, it didn't detract too much from it, either. We did need to add broth to our base for our egg noodle soup with roasted duck to make up for the lack of flavor from the bird, which we never do when we get ducks from our favorite roaster in the general area - which is also a good 40-minute drive away, so my mom always asks for two ducks when we go, with the additional duck to freeze for later consumption. The pieces here were also thrown in haphazardly as the butcher chopped up the meat. Grab part, chop part, scrape resulting pieces from chopping board into Styrofoam box, repeat. Which makes for a jumble of parts with lots of gaps as pieces fall on top of each other however they will. Here's the odd thing about that. Normally, a whole or half order of duck would typically have the odds and ends, neck, head, and bits on a bottom layer of a to-go box with the half or full breast laid over top, with one whole duck easily filling a white Styrofoam box to the brim with juicy, piping-hot pieces of poultry, as my orders from San Francisco's best hole-in-the-wall Chinese barbecue joint always do. And yet here, my mom, who I'm visiting, even murmured a question of whether parts had been taken away from the whole upon opening the box. With pieces thrown in as they were, there was no way of telling whether there was something to that thought without going through trouble of reassembling the entire bird. That said, logic would demand that a jumbled pile of meat pieces take up far more room than an orderly one. And certainly not less. I find myself wondering now whether there was something else to the continued, almost insistent suggestion that my group take seats in the little waiting area out of the butcher's line of sight, which we finally did after some minutes of constant suggestion. Makes for an awkward theory. No matter, though. We won't be back for another duck anyhow. The plump, succulent, far meatier birds at our preferred joint for the same price point are definitely worth the drive in comparison. The cha bong was nicely crisp, chewy, and well-flavored. It makes for good lazy-day and road-trip fare, since it keeps so well and pairs well with just about any meal for a bit of protein on the fly. It's also immensely make to make, though, and other Vietnamese shops carry the convenience food as well, so I probably won't be back just to buy this again, though it's nice to know it exists as an additional option in event I'm feeling that lazy. The cha lua pork sausage, however - cha lua made right is firm to the touch and pink with pork. Not spongy and gray from too much filler ingredients and too little meat to support everything else. The cha lua roll I get in Bloomington remains my go-to standard, regardless of the additional driving commitment. That should tell you something. They have indoor seating, but it's clearly not a dine-in environment - the tables are more intended for customers waiting on still-roasting ducks and pigs than for groups to tear into the succulent meats. I have been going to this Asian BBQ place for over a couple of decades now and had order several roasted pig for big parties. Their special duck is unbelievably good with the fungus mushrooms and lotus flowers sauce. Their BBQ pork are tender and the ribs are so yummy. The pork skin is crispy and crunchy. One of the down side is, they have gone up in prices especially their ducks and the price per a pound of BBQ pork. Besides that, they are one of the best in the Twin City. I normally enjoy ordering food from here. But then i ordered half a roast pig for Christmas and was completely cheated from the best cuts. I asked them to chop up the pig which they did but they did not give me any ribs at all. They kept all the best parts for themselves to sell instead of being honest. While I was waiting for them to chop it all the lady told be to bring out the first tray which was just the head and feet. At this point they were still chopping but I noticed the guy set the ribs aside. I thought maybe he's gonna chop them last. As I took the first tray out they wrapped up the other tray so I couldn't see the meat. When I got home none of the ribs were in my tray. My recent visit to tai hoa to get some quick food for my son to enjoy after studying hard... the food is ok and no complaint.. however when i opened my 2 plastic foam of roasted pork to look... the container has only a few pieces of meat in it and not even full to the top... I checked the other containter just the same and with the price i paid 16.00$$$ i expect the amount should be fuller... i ordered the roasted duck too and a little bit greasy and i brought some banh tieu which a little dry... We have ordered duck in other restaurants and the size portion here seems suspiciously small. It seems that pieces were taken out while the butcher was cutting. If you want to order a whole duck, it's better for you to get the duck uncut. The duck was very plain and the skin was not crispy. The duck was also very dry. This is the best asian bbq place in town. Never had their BBQ pork but their roast pig and roast duck are amazing. In both, the flavor is great and the skin is super crispy. The pork is charged per pound and the duck is per 1/2 duck, $18 for the entire duck. Due to the messiness, make sure you have the very skilled chef do the cutting for you. When you pick the pork that you want, make sure you point to a meatier cut too or you may end up with a bit of skin and bones. This is defiantly a take out place in a rougher neighborhood but still well worth the trip. Having come from Seattle where good Chinese-style BBQ is abundant, I was so excited to find a place in the Twin Cities that carries good roast duck and roast pork. The duck we got was plump and juicy for the most part although it was a little dry in places. The skin on the roast pork was marvelously crispy and well-seasoned. The service was efficient and fast. We were in and out in about six minutes. We will definitely be coming back here. My only wish is that there was a nice place to sit and eat and that they sold rice to eat with your meat. There are a couple tables in the corner but they're not exactly inviting looking. We got our food to-go and brought it back home to eat, but when the food looks this good, sometimes you just want to eat it immediately. It was $22.50 + tax for a whole roast duck and it's cash-only. Sometimes you have one of those days where you just really really need to eat an entire roasted animal. Thankfully, Taihoa is there for you. The barbecued duck is prepared beautifully, with glistening crispy skin and tender succulent flesh. They chop it up for you then and there on a butcher block with a giant cleaver. They don't offer much in the way of sides, but that doesn't matter- it's all about the duck. The special duck comes with an awesome black fungus and vegetable sauce that was roasted within the duck - definitely check it out. read more
