The tail of the pup could have got a 4 maybe even pushing a 5 star except for one big thing... we will get to that in a bit.
I had driven motor coach past here many of times taking tourist to Lake Placid or Saranac Lake. I had even stopped in front of the Pup a few times doing line runs from the Albany airport to drop off the seasonal work exchange kids who come from overseas to work at the pup for the summer. But I had never had the opportunity to stop and eat. The place when I went by was always full and jumping. It has the look of a small carnival midway about it, a little welcoming burst of color and activity in the somewhat desolate forest area between Lake Placid and Saranac Lake. I told myself one day I would make my way up here on my own time and check things out for myself. Well this summer that day came. I had taken the girls to Lake Placid for the day and after a fun filled but long day in LP the question "were are we going to stop and have dinner" came up. Now was my chance! " I know just the place! As I remembered the place was full and parking was tight. There were even two semis parked road side when we arrived. I found a spot and in we went.
Now let me say this, especially after reading some of the other reviews. If your looking for a squeaky clean, well appointed, high end steak house experience with fine table cloths, gold accent lighting and a waitress who dashes to your rescue every time you drop your fork on the lavish marble floor.... Keep driving! This is not that place! If your looking for cucumber and sprout sandwiches or even a healthy selections section on the menu ... again keep moving! The Tail Of The Pup is what it is. A 90% outdoor, road side Bar B Q pit at a camp ground in the middle of the forest! The food is coming out of a small almost shake like building that also serves as the tiny indoor 50's style seating area that was empty when we were there (outside is the place to be), You eat at picnic tables under tents. The floor is patio stones if I recall correctly. It has the feel of a cross between a carnival midway and a back yard or campsite bar b q party with the little clam bake, ice cream, gift shop and cabana bar huts down the one side. There is a covered stage at the end that had live music when we were there. Great little band of older gents pumping out a mix of classic and newer folk and rock. I like that they have a playground area for the kids to go play back behind the stage. Keeping other peoples children as far away from me as possible at all times is always very important to me....lol! But I am sure people with kids would enjoy the fact that they can site and enjoy the band and a beer after dinner and the kids have something that they would enjoy as well. There is an area on the other side of the building for those who want to bring their pets to dinner with them as well. It's kind of in it's own little world away from the band and all the fun but I guess if you have to bring your pet at least they welcome that.
The staff was super friendly and helpful, I can't say anything bad about them. The girl who seated us was nice, our waitress was very friendly and attentive and the girl who my wife talked to to make sure we were not going to get towed as the only place to park was in the take out only spots was super friendly as well. The food was good. The Bar B Q was right on point, my wife had a steak Cesar salad that was very good (yeah.. I sneaked a few bites from here plate) The poop-tain was good (their version of Canadian poutine fries...lol!) and the Irish nachos were also great! The only issue I had was the portions of food you get for the somewhat higher then norm price could have been better. So yes they are a little tight on the portions for what you pay. I really don't know about any of the rumors or such and will not comment on them. No one got sick or witnessed wild drug use while we were there ...lol! It is defiantly geared to the tourist trade with the prices but well worth a visit if your vacationing in the area. We will stop by again as we are planning a return trip to LP and SL. I want to see if our second trip rates better or worse. Now not on an everyday level but a tourist or place to stop on vacation level the pup would have easily got a 4 star maybe even pushing a 5 except for the high price /small portion thing. I'm talking mostly meat here by the way. The nachos and fries were both huge plates but the meat was served out very much on the tight fist side. Would of had liked to had a little bit more food to enjoy for the price. Everything else was great! read more
