Really good Japanese! Excellent sushi. Great tempura, great hibachi. Reasonable prices. Loved it.

Nowhere else in Rochester can you get such authentic Japanese cuisine as you can at Taisho bistro. Walking inside the chefs all greet you with the traditional Japanese いらっしゃいませ or irasshaimase (welcome in Japanese). The music plays the latest in j-rock but it never gets annoying or overbearing. The servers respond with quick prompt service and the food... Authentic to Japan to the T. Nowhere else can you get omurice or takoyaki on the fly. In short, Taisho Bistro fulfills the need for a tall more traditional Japanese restaurant without sacrificing any of the flair of a traditional restaurant. read more

For what it offers it is one of the best. There are two places for sushi in Henrietta now that give you great options. This is the one with the fancy, everting you can think of to put into the sushi roll approach. Highly tasty. Good service, was their early on a Saturday and they were well staffed for the evening. Great atmosphere and decor. We had 6 rolls and 2 apps of Goyza. It was all very tasty. It probably could do tradition sushi good to, but with so many options, it really kicks with US style sushi. tldr - food is mostly okay. Service was so shitty I cannot even fathom how this place is still running if they can't even service a single table when the place is completely empty. Takoyaki - was decent. Yakitori (chicken, squid, quail eggs) - were good. Yakitori (pork) - literally just pork fat on a stick. Tempura ramen - tempura was good and noodles were decent. Tasted like instant seafood packet ramen. Katsudon (pork) - honestly really good, pork was juicy and rice was nice and tasted really good. Why the bad rating? Because when we walked in, no one acknowledged us for a solid 5 minutes. Its not that they were busy because we were the only ones there. Literally no other customer at all. Two waitresses are sitting down in a booth and one waitress is standing up on her phone not looking up at all. Had to call for them (multiple times) over the music to get their attention. Seats us with no problem. Not friendly but whatever. Ordering, eating, refilling water is all fine. Another group is seated but left immediately before ordering which i guess ticked her off? Tried to get a to go box for leftovers, waited for waitress and ten minutes goes by, tried again by waving to any employee i see and i know that they don't want to deal with me because i'm not their responsibility. But like no one goes to call the waitress to help us. I see her walking around sweeping and holding a garbage bag? Okay it's like an hour before you guys close and you're already cleaning up shop. Sure wanna clean and leave early if you don't have anything to do. Tried waving her down again but ignored. Five minutes later finally I get her attention and get the box, she brings the check. Boyfriend reaches to pay in card but i want to split the check so I reach into my wallet to pull out my money. The lady is still there for some reason. Like she doesn't leave at all in the five minutes I'm trying to pull out cash and count and she keeps on staring. Okay weird...? I hand it to her, runs off to do her stuff. Comes back with bill. Boyfriend signs his receipt and places it down. I'm still digging in my wallet for my half of tip. Not even a second later the lady comes back and swipes it off the table before I get a chance to put my tip in? Uh...okay..Lady comes rushing back to table with an angry face. "you're going to put the rest of the tip on the table right?" Uh yes.... yes I am. But i kind of don't want to anymore because of your shit service and threatening me to leave more tip you honestly don't deserve. She goes on to speak with another waitress and in Chinese (I can understand her btw) she says "they only left like 2 dollars." and the other girl goes "really?" in the most mocking tone I have ever heard. Okay now they're disrespecting me in a different language they're assuming I won't understand. I leave some money on the table because I understand some people's livelihood depend on tips but seriously I wanted to book it. Because I swear she was livid and glaring me down as I was walking out the restaurant. I heard the place was really good from a friend but honestly if you want people who only care about money and doesn't respect their customers at all, you've come to the right place. Or at least don't show up in the last two hours of service because they don't give a shit about you. read more

I went looking for a Bento Box for lunch. The price was reasonable, $9.50 for grilled salmon bento box. My issue was that everything came at once - which seemed weird - I am not sure why I couldn't have had my miso soup while I waited for the rest. Sometimes bento boxes have the salad IN the box but in this case it was on the side. So, again, why couldn't I have had my soup and salad while waiting? So everything arrived and once and I had to decide if I let my soup get cold or my salmon get cold... I go for the soup bc I love miso - and it was not hot at all, it was just warm. And it was not a typical miso. It didn't have tofu or seaweed but had veggies. Which was fine with me, just not typical. I just want my soup to be hot...I couldn't finish it bc by the time I got to the bottom is was room temperature. Bummer. The marinated veggies that come on the side seems to be kimchee, a traditional Korean dish, which was very spicy. Not my cup of tea. I'd have preferred a California roll or something. The salmon was nicely seasoned but was skin-on, so I'm glad I saw that before biting into it. Clearly farm raised salmon, quite fatty, which didn't really surprise me but my particular piece was a little too fatty for me. Server was very attentive (there were only 6 or 7 people eating when I was there at lunch time), but the overall experience was definitely lacking. No reason for miso not to be hot! Maybe it's better to stick to the sushi there. read more

Been here about 5 times...good each time. However, a couple friends of mine went there upon reference by me. When they got there it was closed (they close around 3/3:30 and reopen at 4:30). A sign on the door said "Nap". Looking in the windows, 2 employees were sleeping in the large round booth. Still they decided to come back when they re-opened. Upon arrival, they both smelled a urine smell and immediate left. Perhaps this is the norm, since I typically go during the lunch hour and I only smell the cooking. Based on their visit I will not be going back...sanitary issues all the way around. read more

I think that people come here for the sake. One person in our party ate the tempura ramen, but we noticed that the shrimp tempura batter and the vegetable batter were very different from each other which made us think that perhaps it was not made at the restaurant. The shrimp was good but the vegetables were "meh". The gyoza also seemed frozen-- the wrapper edges were tough. Someone notes that the ramen noodles seemed more like somen noodles. We also tried a sushi roll (karazaza roll?) and I probably should have known better not to order this. The jalapeño pepper masked the flavor of the ikura (salmon roe) and the meat slide over the roll was not seasoned. The roll that contained the shrimp would have been better alone. That was also the first time that I've eaten ikura that I could chew on the skins after popping the eggs. If I could give the wait help a separate rating, I'd give her four stars. read more

We went because I had heard great things about the hibachi and sushi...... We weren't disappointed! The service was prompt and polite and the food was fresh. We got salmon and fillet and both were great. The seasoning was perfect and allowed the natural flavors to shine, the spicy crab rolls were delicious as will, with just the right amount of rice, not overwhelming like other places. Delicious ramen (got the spicy miso.) Dined alone on Sunday and had great service and it was reasonably inexpensive ($20 including the tip for a large ramen and an iced tea.) It was a very pretty designed space and i felt very welcomed. Looking forward to eating there again. read more

I decided to try a different sushi restaurant. Taisho had good reviews so I stopped by today for a late lunch. It's a small place, dark colors. There were four sushi chefs and three or four waitresses and the place was about half-full. I'm not sure why it took so long for my sushi to come out. The soup came out quickly though not the traditional miso soup I'm used to. Didn't really care for it, I think it had cabbage. Between the soup and the sushi I ordered it was a long wait. I ordered sushi lunch as well as two pieces of salmon and two pieces of unagi. I like the fact that the rice was seasoned. But the seasoning was somewhat strange and I have to say the texture of the rice was strange also. Hard to describe sort of creamy and small firm grains of rice at the same time. The pieces of fish were large. The amount of rice each piece of fish sat on was quite large also. I ended up taking the fish off the rice and eating it more like sashimi just because there was so much rice there. The fish seemed fresh. I just could not get over the strange texture of the rice. When I mentioned it to the waitress she didn't say anything just walked away. I would have to say the service is not very good. My waitress was not personable or pleasant she just seemed indifferent. She did not seem concerned whether I liked my food or not. Sushi is my favorite thing to eat out and I've had much worse but then again I have had better. I might try the place again but order something other than Sushi since they have an extensive menu. read more
