This is my favorite restaurant in Rochester. Always great food. Always family style service. Always ready to accommodate everyone. Tonight we had a few new items. The Mexican Roll. Outstanding. Eel avocado and some other things with spicy tuna on top. Wow. And the Hibachi with shrimp. Again. Wow. A huge pile of fried rice and 6-8 huge meaty shrimp. Yum. Friends had combo Bento box. Tony, Joe, Karen and the crew treat us like family. Weak don't run

BEST SUSHI in the Rochester area. 40 THUMBS UP! Our party of 4 was highly satisfied with the delicious meal, attentive service and clean dining room. Our server created a fun experience and we enjoyed learning that Tokyo Japan is a family business. Her dad was working the sushi counter and mom was in the back cooking. What a blessing to support a quality family run business! You could taste the love and care cooked into the pad Thai and fried rice dishes. They were full of flavor and fresh ingredients. The sake was hot and warming! The sushi is beautifully wrapped, full of yummy goodness and served with spice-hot wasabi and fresh shaved ginger. They offer food to-go as well and have placed many repeat orders for sushi since our initial visit last summer.

Our party of 9 had a great dinner. We celebrated a birthday and they treated us wonderfully. Even sang a song and brought the gong out for good luck! We ordered sushi, hibachi, pho and pad thai. Everything was amazing

I was a bit skeptical about trying this place but service was great. It's definitely a great spot for sushi & Thai food. The New York roll and papaya salad did not disappoint.

Loved this place. Friendly staff and fantastic sushi! I took my daughter for her bday. She lives in the area, and I was visiting. I'd love to return. She thinks it's the best in the area. I've not tried other places in the area, but I have tried sushi all over in many states. I was not disappointed!

It was my first time to this local restaurant, which was very unassuming from the outside. I was greeted right away, and had some hot tea while waiting for my friend. We each ordered the Bento Combo, which came with a delicious soup and a salad. It was without a doubt enough food for 2 days. Service was amazing and the variety of the menu and pricing were excellent as well. I will definitely return in the near future.

This is 2 orders of the New York Roll!! Wow so good and has fully cooked salmon

I've had this spot on my list of places to go for quite a while now and we finally made our way over! At 7pm on a Friday there was a line out the door and it took about 15-20 mins to be able to walk in and put your name down for a table. I was confused about this at first but it made sense once you walk in, it's pretty small inside and there's a lot of people also coming in to grab to go orders. Luckily the bar was open so we were able to sit right down and order. Our apps came out quick, side salads, fresh shrimp spring rolls and negimaki (thin steak with green onions). Everything was devoured and delicious, I especially loved the steak too. I'm currently pregnant so all the sushi for me needs to be cooked but they definitely had good options! We ordered 5 rolls but our favorites were the New York Roll, the Spider Roll and the Tempura Roll (shrimp with sweet potato). We ordered 2 of the NY roll and didn't realize how massive it is!! This is probably enough for 4 people, but it had cream cheese, cooked salmon (yay!), avocado, and a nice kick of jalapeño. I wish I had room to eat more but after that we were tapped out. Also to our surprise the sushi chefs (maybe owners) were so friendly and asked us about the rolls. Our server was super friendly and quick all night too. I see why this spot is #1 on Yelp, definitely check it out!

Overall this was a great restaurant! Came here on the first night that we arrived in Rochester. I had no idea where to go for dinner and yelp reviews for this restaurant looked very promising. We were seated promptly when we arrived and looked at the menus. I wanted something that was not on the menu and they were able to accommodate me. I ordered a ginger salad to start and it was very refreshing. I also ordered a calamari salad as I had not had one before. It was one of those kind of meals that is so good you have to have other people at the table try it. It was unanimous, everybody loved it. When our Sushi arrived the waitress briefly told us which role and sashimi was which. Appreciated that because a couple of the sashimi looked very similar. Everything tasted very fresh and I would definitely come here again.

First meal moving to Rochester and very excited for all the high ratings. It's a little hole in the wall space and we were immediately seated. It seems like a popular place since there were a lot of to-go orders and the wait times were pretty long. We ordered a sushi combo (8 pieces of sushi chef's choice + a roll) as well as several stand alone rolls (crispy roll, ebi avocado roll, salmon avocado, eel (unagi) roll) and masago. The sushi combo comes with miso soup and a ginger-carrot salad. Our food took about 30 minutes to come out and similarly to other tables, one plate was brought out at a time (which is fine because I was sharing, but for other tables, I saw some people waiting for other dishes to come out). The sushi itself was alright; I felt that there was too much rice and that the rolls were not wrapped very well. Total was around $60 for two, which would be alright but I felt the quality was on par with take out sushi so felt pricey to me. Though as a side note, the hibachi looked amazing (portions looked humongous); if I were to come back, I may go for that instead.

Came here for my birthday, and honestly was underwhelmed. The thing is, Rochester just doesn't have a good seafood or sushi scene. Our Japanese food game here, just isn't strong. So, if you want something else besides Wegmans sushi, then your options are kind of limited. Tokyo Japanese is not bad; I just think their strength is really in Thai food rather than their Japanese food. The fish quality just isn't as fresh; the chef himself I heard has quite a legacy and skill, but no matter the skill, if the fish isn't top notch, then the sushi will taste flat and the dish with no spring. I ordered a Chirashi dish because I used to sit in the corner of Ameyayoko street in Japan putting down the 380 yen bowls. The fish was fresh, small and finely cut- sublime against fresh rice with the adequate amount of sugar and vinegar pared with squid balls. I ordered the dish to take me back but was disappointed. The fish slices were massive; quality not quantity here. It was a strange mishmash of large rough sizes with rice that was not the chewy sushi rice. It was not an easy dish to finish. The rice just had a half teaspoon too much of sugar. The fish lacked bounce. It was eating a salad where the vegetables were just cut too coarsely without much marriage between the salad dressing. We ordered the lad bar because I wanted a fair balance of Thai and Japanese. Personally I think restaurants should stick to Thai or Japanese; mixing them both just offers an average of both, which sacrifices true potential and authenticity for flavor. This was also a difficult to finish dish. The noodles too much and the flavor also too overpowering. Husband loves sweeter things, so he finished it but I couldn't eat much of it. Overall, I think if you're needing a sushi fix, stick to their hand rolls. Rolls seem to be more of their specialty here that can be made fusion and saved with all kinds of sauces and creative flavors. But if you are truly looking for good sashimi and quality fish, then this isn't the place. As someone who usually does full omakase, the thickness and rubbery texture of fish and strange rice was what lost points for me. Super nice people who run this place though, so we gave them a good tip.

I truly can't believe I had such a bad experience with Tokyo Restaurant. Just so you guys know before hand, I am not one to write bad reviews, especially during these hard times where everyone is trying to support their local business. I am traveling for work, therefore, I try to support businesses in the towns I visit. The night I ordered from Tokyo Japanese Restaurant, it was possibly the worst sushi experience I've had. I ordered the sushi boat combo because I was very hungry and can eat a lot of sushi. I went on to grubhub and saw how they have a 5 STAR RATING, therefore, I ordered from there. Took about thirty/forty minutes, nothing crazy. Once I opened the box with my food I was shocked to see the thickness of each piece of sashimi and how small the rolls were. The pieces of sashimi were so thick, it felt like you were eating rubber. The fish also seemed extremely dry. The rice they used also didn't seem to be of a good quality and the sushi rolls were without any taste. An important part of this review is something I can't say is based solely on this restaurant but after this meal I haven't been feeling my best. I have been having digestive issues along with other things. I strongly believe this is due to the meal because before this I felt fine. I'm sorry to be giving such a low review but I feel that is is fair in my experience and I do not want anyone to suffer the same. Oh and along with that, the meal was extremely expensive. Will not be giving this restaurant a second chance.

Visiting from LA. Friendly staff. Sashimi sampler was really good esp butte fish. Fresh. Inexpensive even comes with soup and salad.

We used to go to the old Tokyo often, does this location have the same menu? We specifically want hibachi.

That being said, no matter who picks up the phone and takes my order- I ALWAYS need to dump a boat load of chili flakes on top (we have a nice bag on hand at home). If you ask for a 5, tamper your expectations, it will be a 1 or 0. The pad kee mao I recently ordered had maybe 2.5 green beans and 1/4 of a raw tomato?? I asked for tofu and got the same tofu puffs I bye from the asian market (aka their tofu is not freshly fried in-house) and they were on the dry side like they'd been sitting out after being cut in half. The pad thia my partner ordered had a scant amount of chicken, and egg. We had to heavily fix it up with additional chili flakes and lime. It was meant to be a level 5 was more like a level 1. Pathetic. We are no longer going to be ordering takeout from here.

The restaurant is small and jam packed full of tables, but we were still able to be sat and given menus immediately around 2PM on a Saturday. We decided to order a bunch of things and share them. Our food took a bit to come, but it was pretty busy, and we were very happy with our food. Everything was delicious. The grilled chicken from the platter had awesome lemongrass flavor, the pho's broth was flavorful, the egg rolls were absolutely amazing, and the portions were huge - we had plenty to take home afterwards. Chopsticks had included a fork, napkins and the small packets of sauces without being asked. When I arrived at my hotel room and opened the weighted take-out bag, I was surprised to see a large bowl instead of the usual cardboard box for my Szechuan chicken. The accompanying rice was in a box though. The Szechuan chicken was super-hot in temperature and extra spicy as ordered. Normally, when you ask for extra spicy the restaurants are fearful to actually make it so. Maybe it was the double extra, extra that clued them in. But it normally does not work for others. The Szechuan chicken had a lot of vegetables (green/red peppers, mushrooms, broccoli, baby corn cobs) that make me feel better about eating Chinese food. The vegetables were not only abundant but fresh looking and cooked thoroughly. There was also plenty of white strips of chicken to enjoy with all those vegetables. My only negative was that for it to be that piping hot, it had to be microwaved. Not sure if it was done in a wok earlier and then reheated, but that is my assumption. I am in search of good egg rolls. I travel frequently and like to try different Chinese restaurants in different cities across the U.S. Good egg rolls are very difficult to find. They are either too greasy, insufficient filling, or just lacking flavor. These were not greasy at all. So not greasy I found myself wondering if they used a convection oven/ air fry oven. A+ for that, but C grade for the filling. The filling did not have much flavor overall and with the shell being dry, the filling needed moisture. Oh well, the search continues. They do have seating for around 50 people and it appeared clean from my brief exposure to the restaurant. The woman at the counter was friendly and spoke perfect English. The price for the food was fine, not too expensive and not cheap. I would return to Chopsticks to try out other items next time I am in Rochester.
