DISAPPOINTED AND SURPRISED what is wrong with taj!! The food standard has gone down and the ambience is filthy. Just stepped out of the restaurant and I feel so surprised this was the tajchaat house I used like and trust if no other restaurant was open . None of the tables were clean I had to ask twice for them to clean . It was all littered with paper towels and crumbs and even after they wiped the tables down it was yucky . The food has lost its old charm . The dosa I ordered was cold 2 seconds after I picked it up from the dosa counter . I ordered a paneer dosa and to my knowledge and according to other places I have had the same it was served with paneer masala smeared inside the dosa like masala dosa and what I got here was a plain dosa with paneer burji on the side . The gobhi starter was not dry and for some reason sweet . The sambar was watery n tasteless and the coconut chutney was not good I think it was spoilt . The only good thing was the peanut garlic chutney . NEVER EVER COMING BACK . And this was on Diwali night .. crowd was thin n no specials even !! read more

The first time I went, I had pav bhaji. It tasted fine. So, I went a second time and had dahi Puri. There are supposed to be 6 in each plate, but I was only given 5. When I asked about that, the lady behind the chat counter said that you only get 5 if you dine in and 6 for take outs. That makes no sense. She could have corrected her mistake, but chose not to. I agree with previous reviews that this place has a sweet community feel to it. We had a little difficulty ordering at first because no one spoke English behind the counter, but two customers took the time to explain the menu options. If you're adventerous in your food and open to a new experience, this place is just for you. read more

This is the best Chaat place I've ever been to in the US -- getting as much pani puri as you can eat from a stand pretty much nails the home feeling, but everything I've had here in a dozen visits has been awesome and the people have always been friendly. We have been here several years ago while visiting family. Decided to try again but were hugely disappointed. We ordered pani puri, chaat papri, chole bature, and masala dosa. Pani puri pani tasted like it was made from pre-packed packets... not good at all. I expect more if I am paying for pani puri. Chaat papri is the worst I ever tasted, it was too watery and didn't blend well together. It's not worth coming back here. read more

Ok, before you go here, scroll down to Tim V.'s review, especially if you are not Indian and you dont know wtf to order. I had out my Yelp app and used it as my guide to ordering! (thanks Tm!) It was unlike any Indian restaurant I have been too! It was like an Indian cafeteria. Honestly, the atmosphere was a little off-putting at first, but it had to be ok because of all the good Yelp reviews. So I went to an Indian girl who could speak english and she helped me order. (I really was reading off all of Tim's suggestions he made in the review!) Thank god for that review and the girl who was fluent because I would have been lost!! I also missed the "Its all vegetarian" in the reviews I skimmed over. I thought it was vegetarian-friendly, not strictly vegetarian. Again, I am used to typical Indian restaurants where you get chicken makhani and chicken tikka. And they didnt have Indian tea! ahhhhh. There was a nice couple with a baby our age sitting right by us and they were so nice to introduce us to Mini Iddly. They even offered us one for our baby to try. If you're non-Indian you won't be welcome. I'm non Indian so I took a star off for ... Let's call it service. Don't get me wrong, my order was taken & food was made, but not without snarky comment that included the language "you people" & general attitude (including when he came over completely annoyed that I didn't pick up my food and it was their buzzer which wasn't working). And the food wasn't that great, the place is not nice, and price is average... So all in all not worth it with so many other great options around. I had the masala dosa. I read a review saying they loved the sambar & it was their favorite. It was average in flavor & in a buffet style bowl. Good you can have all you want, but nothing special. read more

I am a visitor from DC and visited this place a couple of times. This place is part chat house, part south indian restaurant and part north indian.restaurant. So far I have ordered South Indian restaurants and they meet the target. This is a self service restaurant and in some case there is a price difference. The restaurant has a hall to seat people and is functional. I ordered upma, vada sambar and salt lassi. For some reason this combination took longer than other orders placed much later. After follow up one of the persons started making the lassi. The lassi was very good. A few minutes later I got the upma. The upma was ok and for the price ($4.50) the portion size was big enough to feed 2 people. However the upma was dripping with oil. Finally the vada sambar arrived after the waiter gave it to a different customer. It was a disappointment. Either the vada was old or it was fried longer than needed. The vada was also hard to bite. The hall did not have air conditioning and by the time I finished eating I was sweating. read more

Great food, bustling atmosphere, and a hidden vegan menu that made my day. Usually, when I visit family in Flower Mound, I can't find anything to eat that suits my diet. But I wound up in Irving this trip and Taj Chaat House is about 2 miles up the road from my hotel. Indian menus are very challenging for me. Unlike Chinese restaurants, many Indian restaurants don't feel the need to translate their menus into decipherable ingredient lists. No difference here. But when I asked Hari, the gentleman in the hair net and tie to help me select a vegan dinner, he pulled out a laminated list of vegan dishes and helped me select two That were both incredibly delicious. I had the Aloo Chole Chaat, a layered dish of diced cauliflower, chick peas, herbs and topped with crispy chips and twists (I don't know what they were) and simultaneously sweet and spicy, and the Vegetable Biryani, rice with vegetables, peas, lima beans and spice pods. Hari stopped me before I left the counter and added a cup of garbonzo beans as well. I'm sorry I'm only in town for a couple of days and won't be able to sample the whole menu. It is self service restaurant, convenient with very helpful staff. I went there first time, since I did not know what different dishes were, they were very helpful in explaining it. I actually went to eat there because of 4 and 5 star ratings from US Blonde and Blue eyed people at YELP. They were absolutely right, for money and quality of food to them every thing was secondary. Somehow I am spoilt, only thing that I will expect is that when we two people go we both should get our food together but if you eat dish of your choice and your choices are different, you may not get it. My friends food came in long before mine came in and since it was first time I started eating with her instead of watching her face or others. That was kind of good for friendship. Vickey and I enjoyed food together, however her choice was better then mine, so we eat greasy food later which they insured had less oil in, because I had told them so. As such if you tell them you will not get oily food, you will get it made to your taste, mild, medium or hot and you can eat all you want Sambhar and all the garnishments. For first time I eat a fried green chilli that was not hot at all, how they did it still is amazing me. Yes dish size was very big and we just ordered one dish each and after that I could not eat even sweet dish, although I did had a mangoe juice. I loved the place, I wish they had table service but for such good food and such friendly staff and dinner for two for under 20 dollars with drinks and tip, what else can one ask for. WOW, I am still full abd that is making me yawn. Taj Chaat house a very good option for vegetarian people who love indian food. you will find this place crowded with Asian / Indian people so if you dont like crowd do not go on weekend. crowd is always good if you like. you have lots of choice here to eat. Make sure you tell them how how you like so they will prepare as your choice. This place is outstanding. I have had the benefit of going several times with an Indian friend who is familiar with the cuisine; otherwise it might have been hard to interpret the menu. But I've been without the help, and here's the deal: everything is good. I have had perhaps half a dozen dishes here, and every time have enjoyed it to the max.
