We were visiting Dallas and wanted to try some Bengali food. We ordered some beef mezban and it was so delicious. The gravy of the beef was just perfect, not too thick and not too runny, just the consistency that's required to enjoy with some white rice. The strong aroma of mustard oil from the beef reminded me of how it's cooked back home, sooo goood!!! We were chatting with the folks and found out that the gentleman who cooked is actually from Hyderabad but speaks fluent Bengali and cooked up some really good Bengali style beef for us! And the owner is from Chittagong so that explains the delicious recipe. I would highly recommend anyone looking for authentic Bengali food and I bet all the other beef dishes would be delicious too. This should allow you to sample multiple dishes without breaking the bank and feeling full. For this particular delivery, I ordered: 1. Chicken biryani - The quantity provided can easily be shared by 2 and even 3 people in one sitting. They did NOT skimp on the amount of meat provided with the biryani rice, it was quite a lot. 2. Shami kebab (beef) - Minced beef patties with lots of spices (but not spicy in terms of heat) was a perfect appetizer. The meat was tender and the flavor intense. 3. Seekh kebab (beef) - I thought the kebabs could have been a bit more juicy, it was too dry. The flavor though was on point. I see some negative reviews about customer service, but I never had a bad experience at this place. The food is unapologetically authentic. I regularly do take-aways for the Mutton Kacchi Biryani which is unique and tastes divine! They only make it over the weekend. I also love the fiery fish curries and bhortas. Great place to pick up fish, goat, and chicken. You can choose which fish you like and the store will get it cut while you wait. They have a small selection of grocery items, Indian clothes and jewelry, and a restaurant. Haven't tried their food yet, but the grocery is OK if you want to pick up some items in a pinch. There isn't much variety available--just basics. The place looks pretty run down inside, but their products are fine. read more

I ask over the phone to make ground beef out of solid cut beef. I told I will pay the boneless solid beef price. I personally requested to owner. He gave time an hour later will be ready. When I went there one and half hour later ground beef is not ready. There are walk in customers who are inside the botcher area touching the beef. They let customer cut the line and let inside. Store owner told me was busy my beef will be another hour later!!! 2ndtime went there not ready. Butcher is cutting beef for walk in customer again. Went back an hour later, I saw owner is inside butcher room. butcher preparing ground beef. He is mixing with beef and fat missed beef and old skin mix beef, those supposed to in trash, making ground beef. I ask butcher is that my ground beef? He said yes. I ask again, who told you to do that? He said owner told him to mixed it. I told him that, I specially requested make ground beef out of solid beef. Which I agree to pay. Butcher answer I know, but owner ask me to mixed it. This Salimer Market is at 183 Airport Freeway, Irving, TX is so bad, "nasty," "rude" and "inattentive" "sell expire items" "dirty" "bad odor emanating" I feel like, owner talks friendly with some people he know , but when deliver products is bad/low quality to get more profits!! Like most Halal meat shops, the inside of Shalimar Market is dark, devoid of people, and looks a bit sketchy. Unlike most Halal meat shops, the butcher actually cuts meat the way you want, on the spot, and trims off all the unwanted bits. Other than the meat, the quality seemed lacking (produce did not look fresh, shelves full of dusty jars, no offers of help from the owners). Props for their political consciousness though- the owner was intently watching a special on Barack Obama while I wandered around clearly needing and wanting to be helped :) One of these days, I'll find a Halal meat shop in the area that is well-lit, clean, and welcoming. Not sure how this restaurant got 4 stars, but it is not even close to a Bengali restaurant. Bengali food has a distinctive way of cooking and has a taste different than regular Indian food. The food here was actually not edible. The rohu fish curry was not a fish curry, absolutely horrible to eat. The goat biriyani was equally bad with lots of unnecessary oil and no taste. This restaurant can qualify for being one of the worst Indian/Bangladeshi restaurants in all of US. Avoid at any cost. read more

Shalimar Supermarket Café may be one of the filthiest "supermarkets" I have ever visited. The place smells like an Indian slum with its distinctive pungency. The floors are aged, musty, and worn. The walls and ceiling are the epitome of filthiness. It is absolutely beyond me how people can sit and eat food or shop inside this place without suffocating or vomiting. I have gone around the world and visited many Indian restaurants and supermarkets, yet none of them were even close to the level of absolute filth that can be found in Shalimar. The owner refuses to acknowledge the unhealthy and filthy conditions and cannot even understand the words "customer service" or "customer satisfaction." He is an arrogant prick with a self-destructive attitude who refuses to listen to any customer complaints. Only God knows how this place has existed without getting any tickets from the health department. I am sure that the only reason this place is alive is that the Bangladeshi community shops here. The million-dollar question, in a nutshell, is: "how long can Shalimar survive solely on the metaphorical ventilator of the Bengali community while defaming it?" read more

This is about biryani and nothing else. And I give it 3.5 stars. We stopped here late one evening to see if they served biryani. The grovery has a small cafe attached to it. I will say that it was dark and looked empty, but the guy that ran the cafe was next door cutting some meat for some customers. We ordered 3 or 4 chicken biryani ($3.99) and I ordered an order of mutton (goat) biryani too ($5.99). The guy working there said we'd love it because it was "Pakistani style". We did! The portions were nice and it was well spiced. My friend said the only thing it needed was some black cardimom; I agree. Just to let you know that my measuring stick for biryani in DFW is Al Markaz. Please be careful when buying Shalimar frozen foods especially pastries.dispite the listed expiration date I discovered we bought some meat pie pastry 5 packs of 10 and 2 of the packs with 20 patties where contaminated with some black stuff which look like mold. Since we had travelled 20 miles we called the owner and explained the situation. He advised we can come and change. We did advise him that we cannot keep these patties in our fridge since we were not sure if this was mold or not....we did not want to take any chances in case it was mold and we also explained to him that we live too far that it may take us a week to come back there. The owner stated that was fine we can through these patties away and come and get a replacement. I visited the store on 01\06\2012 and they refused to reimburse me in anyway even with my receipt stating that I should have kept the molded pastry and brought it back.....despite the fact that I confirmed with the owner and stated that it was okay to throw them away. The bottom line ...my issue was not about money......the pastry were only $3.99 each pack.....I drove about 20 mile 15 dollar worth of gas because I believe in integrity......Shalimar did not owner its integrity and promise. The (Owners) have very bad customer service. I know $7 was not that much but hay............Shalimar,do not owner what they tell you ...Please check your stuff before you leave the store, keep you receipt ..if you buy with card make sure they give you two receipts one for card and one for your purchases or never go to buy there at all. Save yourself the stress you do not need to deal with Shalimar they do not even know what customer service is...they need classes for food preservation and customer service. You have to see for yourself...check my pastry pic I attached above...these were taken 1-2 hours from the time we bought them and let me know if you would make pies from these patties?????? Save your family and eat health and clean by avoiding this place. My family was so disappointed!!!! I felt like my time, gas, money and intelligence was wasted on top of molded pastries.
