I have waited for a bit before writing this review. I wanted some distance from the experience (in a good way, don't worry). We went, on a lark (travel mags, yelp) while on a quick Mother's Day weekend getaway from Illinois. We are not locals, even by current assignment. My wife grew up in Hawaii and then Ohio. I came from Virginia and by way of the US Army- a whole lot of the world. There are 126 other reviews, some very good, others oddly incoherent. There is a range from 1 (?) to 5 stars. I pause for a moment to share this. When I see 1 star reviews, I will often go to that profile and look at their other reviews. It tells me something when their bell curve is tightly skewed to the low end. I wish I could find them and give them a hug or recommend a therapist. Back to Taj Mahal (in Springfield, MO), when you understand the significance of that venue to many of the Indian people, calling yourself that is pretty gutsy. It is outwardly an unassuming corner slot in a regular non descript strip mall. There is no marble, white or otherwise. Upon entry you have a mix of complex and heady aromas. The first thing my wife said was "this place smells wonderful", she said it again to the sweet faced mother who took care of us during the visit. The food was as good as any other Indian cuisine I have had, not the best, but certainly not bland, boring, oily, or any other of the odd descriptions in the one star reviews (I have to wonder did those people somehow review the wrong place- or-again they need that hug). The place was busy, little kids (Mother's Day) accommodated, take-out orders rolling- everyone working with a smile. Perhaps we get back the energy we project to others? Our service was fast, correct and we had the right kind of attentive follow-up. We had Somosa, Mix Pakora (as starters), the Somosa was great, complex with just enough heat. The Pakora was just okay, a little like a busy hush-puppy. Ours were fried too long for my taste, after the first bites a burned batter flavor stuck around a tick too long. Our entrees were both excellent, Lamb Curry (med hot-right choice-enough for forehead sheen) for me and Shrimp Biryani for the bride. She discovered for herself that the yogurt based sauce they serve it with is the right push to take the dish that final little step into unique. Food Review Complete... Overall Life Experience Review begins... Please indulge me for some geopolitical comment. Although every good thing that has happened in my life and finances has come from the military industrial complex, I long for a world of cooperation, peace and love. Everyone working in Taj Mahal on Mother's Day might be a native born Missourian, I doubt it- and it doesn't matter. They are human beings, who shared their talents and culture with a mixed couple from two different worlds, that met online and live now happy and whole. One of the conversations we had during dinner was how rich the opportunity to have food from other cultures is here in CONUS, any decent sized town has good restaurants for at least the "big four" (Chinese, Latin, Greek, Italian). That is due to cooperation, the welcoming of "the other". There is truly enough to go around. Sadly,the richest and greediest seem to least believe that. I don't know how we get to that space. It might start with a little more love. Perhaps that could start right here in the USA. Perhaps a disagreement could be resolved by meeting in the middle over actual facts instead of calling names and reinforcing each sides "alternative facts". Perhaps we could spend more on schools, roads, hospitals instead of missiles/fighter planes/ships. Perhaps we could stop hating people based solely on their skin tone, language or accent. Perhaps we could listen to each other and seek to understand-rather than just listen to respond. Perhaps we could love ourselves a bit more so that our own pain doesn't cause us to seek to inflict it on others. read more

Let me preface this with the following: I LOVE INDIAN FOOD. Like, I love it a lot. So when I found out there was a new Indian place in town I was super happy. I hadn't had time to go by yet and was excited when a friend was down for trying out some new Indian food. We went for lunch and had the buffet. Which for two people came to a total of 21.75. This seems a bit over the top for lunch and no other drinks :/ I am a vegetarian who tries to eat mostly vegan food - and usually Indian food is a great option for this. However the dishes on the buffet that were vegetarian literally had ghee floating on top of them. You could actually see the fat in the dish. The flavors were right - but I left feeling a little ill from so much ghee :( The naan was okay - and the pakoras were fine. I missed seeing samosas on the buffet. The chai was a bit of a disappointment as it was rather weak and not at all sweet. all in all, it was an okay experience - maybe i will order take out sometime to give them a second chance- but I wont be eating the buffet again. read more

The atmosphere in there was ok. It was fairly quiet with some Indian music in the back ground. When we ordered and got our food, my dish was super spicy, and I ordered mild. I told the server about it and he replied with" I don't know , the chef cooks it." So they pretty much did nothing about it. Then I asked what spicy level it is, and the server was telling me all the ingredients, so then I asked again how spicy is it, them he replied with " I don't know, what ever you ordered." At the end I don't eat it bEcause it was too spicy. We also ordered 4 different bread. And for some reason we got a onion bread that we didn't ordered. So we told the server and he was raising his voice and kept insisting that we did order the onion bread. So we didn't even get the lamb bread and cheese bread that we ordered. Overall it was ok but the biggest problem is the inconsistency and them taking the wrong order making the wrong food. It felt a lot like they were being selfish and not trying to redo the food or not caring. But it's ok, we won't come here again. read more

I was near Springfield for a few days and I went here TWICE! I definitely plan to go back soon when I pass through. Their butter chicken & their lamb korma was a hit both times for me! I liked the Raita so much with the garlic Naan. This place was 10/10 and the service was pleasant too. read more

I visited here when I was in town for business for the night and wanted a quick dinner. I really enjoyed the Thali which gave me a sampling of a good variety of the meat offerings (butter chicken, lamb curry, tandoori chicken, Seekh kabab) and a few sides and finished the meal with a tasty rice pudding. It's always nice at a new restaurant to get to try a few different options. The menu had all of the staples you expect from an Indian restaurant. This was a delicious place to eat lunch at thanks in part to the buffet they offer during lunchtime! My whole family found something they liked and that's always a plus since we have two adults and two little kids (7 years old and 4 years old). The kids loved the mango chicken and the saucy fruit (can't remember what that's called but it's like melted ice cream and it's so good!). I really enjoyed the fried eggplant, rice, naan, butter chicken, and a mushroom dish the most. My husband liked the goat and almost everything else. They were very reasonably priced as well, it only cost us $35.54 since we all had waters and that was for buffets on a Saturday. Very small portions. $40 delivered via Uber Eats and both entrees were in what seemed like a double pint container. It was one decent serving. Should be double for what you are paying as both were lacking on vegetables and eggplant. I feel violated! For that much moola, give me more. Another good Indian food option in Springfield! Recently, I have spent quite a bit of time in Springfield, MO. I have certain spots that I like to visit when I make down, and one of them is Gem of India. Unfortunately, they were closed for their annual Diwali festival, so I turned to Yelp. The answer was Taj Mahal. When I visit a new Indian restaurant, I must try the buffet, just to have a good scope of what the restaurant offers. TM's buffet is very extensive, covering many flavors and proteins. I usually eat chicken, and they had it in Tikka Masala, curry, orange sauce, and tandoori. Tikka Masala is usually my go-to, but I was slightly disappointed with the flavor, which tends to be slightly sweet and just a little bit of heat. The curry was better, and the orange sauce was probably the most flavorful of the three. However, I was stuffed by the time I made it to the orange sauce. The tandoori was also very good. For the most part, I really enjoyed Taj Mahal, but I was a little disappointed that I didn't get to hit Gem of India on this trip. However, I have a better idea of what TM does well, so I would definitely go back and try it again. read more

Love the butter chicken and chicken curry from here. I really like everything I've tried. The reason I'm taking off one star is that this last time we ordered three entrees to go and they only gave enough rice for one. It seems every time I get an order from here we get a widely different amount of rice. When planning to have this as a meal for a family I had planned amounts based on previous orders where there was at least enough for each entree, this time I had to make more rice at home to go along with the rest of the meal. Also when we ask for two of the same entree they put them together so you have to divide it on your own ( I get they are saving on supplies, but it's inconvenient when you are planning on taking food to someone else). read more

This review is specific to weekday lunch buffet. In summary I'd not recommend eating lunch buffet there. Reasons: Very unbalanced and limited selection of food - no Biriyani, no daal, no white rice, only 1 veg item. Plus all the food tasted similar and had dollops of butter and sour cream. The only thing I liked was the chicken curry. Being an Indian and having eaten indian lunch buffet across 9 states this ranks quite low. I'd give a 2 star but the mango lassi was superb! They either use Alphonso pulp or essence, not the standard mango pulp. With the lassi, we averaged about $14 for lunch. read more

I love Tah Mahal! This place came out of the wood work a couple years back in the Springfield community, and it is quickly gaining its right to be a staple point in our town. The food here is always fresh, both when it is cooked to order, and on the buffet. You will be hard pressed to find an indian food place that offers such a great price on their lunch buffet. Almost every indian food restaurant to me is a little over priced but at lunch time this place is perfect. I could come here every single afternoon! I love their Butter Chicken, and the Chicken Tikka Masala, with the plain nan, and their Vegetable Korma is good as well. The portions on the cooked to order menu are huge and you will definitely be taking some home. On a side note: I think there is a lot of stigma about how indian food is super hot, well just a piece of advice. It's been 3 months since I dined here, but it still strikes me as impressive Indian food! Among the 4 of us, we shared chicken makhani (butter chicken - my fave!), tandoori chicken and seafood, spiced cauliflower and potatoes (I don't remember the name of the dish, but would recommend it!), and lentils. All of the food was flavorful and cooked with expertise. Don't forget to top it all off with some garlic naan! Springfield is very fortunate to have Taj Mahal. It's good. So why the one star knock? There was a general lack of finesse in the service and in the execution of the dishes: Yellow lentil soups that were flavorful, but not thick enough, and chicken chunks for the Tikka Masala that were too big to absorb the GREAT flavor of the sauce that was obvioulsy prepared with fresh and freshly ground spices. Naan and Tandori Chicken were excellent. I don't have an Indian restaurant near my home. So this was a real treat, and overall did not disappoint. Enjoy. read more

I had a great first experience at this establishment more than a year ago and so I undoubtedly had retrying two more occasions. Unfortunately my next two visits did not meet up to my expectations, both times I was always seated near the rest rooms when there were ample seats available. They did move me on my request but also both times I felt I was hurried to leave although it was 30 minutes from closing on both times. Further the dish I had selected although the spices are superb has always been served with white meat and on the last occasion was served with mostly brown which I personally do not have a liking to; when mentioned to the owner he said that's how it is, did offer to not charge me but I felt obliged to pay for my meal. I'm so happy to have found an Indian buffet in the area! Their customer service is excellent and immediately felt welcomed as soon as we walked in. Food variety was just right for the price of the lunch buffet. Naan was fresh and perfect texture. The only reason I wouldn't give them 5 stars would be that the buffet was replenished much towards the latter part of the buffet window. Their last bit of chicken tika was delicious, but never refilled as well as 2 entrees that I missed out on. Regardless, they may have been more conscious of not wasting fresh food since they have a closing period between lunch and dinner. Next time, I'll come earlier! read more

A coworker and I ordered this for delivery today. Food was very good. Packaging was a nightmare for the office. We had no forks, spoons, or anything to use as a plate. We had two individual meals that were sharing containers. We didn't want to eat out the containers at the same time together. It's wonderful to have authentic Indian food in Springfield. We have tried many items on the menu and never been disappointed. Taj Mahal is the place for Indian. My husband LOVES the Lamb Vindaloo. Any of the Lamb dishes are tender as they should be. Other items that we enjoy: Curry Chicken, Raita, Chickpea dishes, Any of the Kormas (wonderful depth of flavors), Chicken Tandoori, the Naan, Mango Custard and Rice Pudding/Kheer. The condiments are also quite good. They also have Kingfisher Beer at a great price. There is a lunch time buffet which is great for those not familiar with Indian food. And operated better than the typical buffets. One can try various offerings and learn what their palate prefers. But, you can still order off the menu as well. We eat here once or twice a month and enjoy the staff. They are helpful and observant of your needs, but not intrusive. Since relocating here, we learned it was difficult to find authentic ethnic food (except for Italian at Gilardi's when Nicola Gilardi owned it). But, that seems to be changing and there are now several (many?) good options. The only thing I would change is the presence of TV's on the walls.
