Was close to KU and decided to google Indian restaurants near me and chose Taj Palace because it offered a lunch buffet. Restaurant was clean but decor very dated and in need of touching up and painting in places. The individual who seated me and attended the table was attentive, but not overly friendly. They had a small buffet where you could create a salad and the main dish buffet offerings were rice, naan or fried bread and a variety of chicken or vegetable dishes. The naan was crunchy, not the soft bread I am used to and the fried bread had no taste. I did try most of the dishes. There was a mushroom dish that was quite tasty and a spicy chili chicken that was good. The buffet is advertised at 16.95 yet my total was over 19 with water. The lunch buffet was appalling. Don't waste your money. I should've known better. I couldn't eat half the chicken. It tasted as it was reused from several days ago. The icing on the cake was the waiter who I am presuming, was the owner by the way he presented himself. He was extremely snarky. He wouldn't remove the plates from my table because I clarified which plates to remove and then to boot he gave me some snarky comment as the final bill was $19 and the lunch buffet was $16 so I didn't know how the additional three dollars was tapped on. I'm not from Missouri so the tax rate seemed exorbitantly high. He literally gave me a snarky comment. Their lunch menu is very small and does not boast a full menu. I'll have to come back for dinner because I really wanted to try their vindaloo. I tried the chili chicken for lunch and it was delicious! Lunch also comes with naan, rice, chicken and a fried veggie app. Portions are huge, and you can easily get two meals out of the platter. I loved that we got a little bit of everything, it was a great way of having a buffet, while their lunch buffet was actually closed from Covid. Wonderful people run this restaurant and I prefer to support small businesses. The food was all very well prepared and fresh. The garlic naan was amazing! My only disappointment was the Raita. It was white and thick with shredded carrots in it. I'm used to a thinner light green version sans carrots. Taj Palace! I don't have much to compare it to the other restaurants in KC, as this has been the only place i have gone so far (and for good reason!). When you need a quick fix of butter chicken or other Indian cuisine dishes, this is the place to go! There have been times where my friends and I ordered super last minute, but the owner has been so accommodating and eager to prepare our food! We are always greeted with friendly faces and conversations when we pick up our food. Their butter chicken is great and you can customize how spicy you want it. The portions are pretty big to match the price so I would say it's worth it -- I can always make a couple meals out of it. Their garlic naan pairs so well with the dishes, so definitely try to order that if you can too! I have also tried their chicken biryani, chicken vindaloo, mulligatawny soup, and mango lassi, and nothing so far has been displeasing to me. And to top it off, Queer Eye has visited! Taj Palace is movin' on up in my rankings and has quickly become our go-to Indian takeout spot, which is great news for them because our family has become straight up addicted to Indian food. One reason we hadn't gone here as often is that they aren't easy to find on any of the main food delivery apps, but that's not a problem for us as we live close enough to pop in for takeout. Their Covid-19 sanitation and processes make me very comfortable to recommend it for takeout, which is key right now and for the foreseeable future. Their Saag Paneer is amazing. They put just the right amount of spice in the 'medium spice,' and it can of course be nice and mild if that's your preference. It's creamy, but not overly so; some in town are way too creamy in my opinion, but this hits the right balance. Coming in second place is the Mutter Paneer in all its tomatoey goodness. Their garlic naan is a tad crispy and heavy on the garlic. In other words, delicious. I've never met a samosa I didn't like, and these are excellent. Even though they're fried, they're not too greasy. The veggie pakoras are not my fav, so we skip those. Lastly, they've been including a tiny cup of rice pudding in our to-go orders, so we finally ordered a full-size one and will do that again. It's just light and sweet enough to cap off a big spicy Indian meal, and my kiddo loves it. Sometimes I think that me and my roommate are keeping this place open because of how often we order from here. It's great for take out and dine in. Everything I have ordered from here has been absolutely delicious, and the portions are large. They bring you tons of rice and give you tons of rice in your take out order, and I always get at least 2 meals out of my entree. We are addicted to the garlic naan. This is our favorite Indian restaurant we have tried in the KC area because of the bang for your buck and the flavor! Parking on 39th is somewhat of a challenge on busy weekends, but you can always find a spot on a side street. If you're picking up food, I recommend bringing a friend to hop out while you circle the block, but sometimes you can swing over right in front of the restaurant if you're lucky! read more

Great portions, amazing flavor and not greasy or oily. So often there are restaurants that serve dishes swimming in oil. The Bhindi Masala was particularly flavorful. I've never had any better. Beware of restaurant's time/closing policies! We entered the building with a couple minutes more than an hour until closing, and the manager hovered over us, pressuring us to order as soon as possible. This was our first red flag. With our rushed orders placed, we began to settle in, but we soon noticed something brown floating in our water and a fork with caked-on residue. The manager then began to very loudly reprimand his one server due to a simple miscommunication. Our food arrived quickly and we started to enjoy our meal. An elderly couple arrived around 8:30 PM (30 mins until close). The manager seated them and then began to bicker with them and pressure them to order ASAP. Other customers tried to enter around 8:40 PM, which the manager would not seat, so they started to leave, but he followed them to the door saying they could order and eventually sat them at a table. We really tried to give this place the benefit of the doubt, and the food was good, but the manager's behavior and attitude with patrons/staff really left a bad taste in our mouths. It was a struggle to not pick up our things and just leave. Will not be returning. read more

Do you ever get a sudden urge to order Indian food out of nowhere? Well if you do, I would highly recommend you do what I did and order from Taj Palace. This is one of the better go-to takeout places in Midtown KC. I'm not just saying that because they give you a small container of rice pudding for free when you order from them. This time around I decided on the Lamb Saag and Garlic Naan. The containers seemed small at first, but boy was I wrong. Once the food was put together on my own plate, it looked liked a full meal. The Lamb Saag was delicious and contained an abundance of large chunks of meat. I found the rice to be a little cold, but this was easily solved by mixing in the saag with each bite. I personally believe that garlic naan bread is a must for any Indian meal. The ones from Taj Palace are always well made and compliments the meal nicely. The portions are large and provides a very filling dinner, especially once you top off with the complimentary rice pudding! Lamb Saag: 8/10 Garlic Naan: 10/10 (it's simply not possible to not like this) There really isn't much to complain about the food at Taj Palace. Just ate there today. For a buffet Taj is really good. I didn't even know it existed. The buffet has everything from chicken samosas to a mango drink. Was recommended this place after an interview in the area. Got take out of the chicken saag, chicken samosa, veggie samosa and their garlic and onion naan bread. Food was incredible. I'm probably a little biased since I love saag but it was just what I needed on a cold day. Chicken pieces were large and they were generous with their portions. Rice that came with was pretty standard. The samosas were crispy and packed to the brim. I felt that the chicken ones were a little on the dry side and they were mince. The veggie ones were terrific though. This place serves garlic naan and onion naan. You want the naan that has BOTH. It can be easily confused but the two together make it as amazing as you'd imagine the combination being. Highly recommend. I eat at tan palace twice a month when I go to KU to see my doctor. It is usually very delicious. The naan was amazing but the chicken tikka this time was flavorless.
