I ordered the Butter chicken., Service was ok. Faster than expected. Butter chicken was extremely salty. Plus I am used to a slightly creamy sauce. The cucumber salad was soupy. Prices were decent but unable to eat more than a few bites because of the excessive saltiness. I usually just get the Gyro wrap combo. If I ever come back I will stick to that. read more

If you're anything like me, you get overwhelmed at the sight of the massive crowds in line to get spices on the weekends, but you really must find a time to get food here. The real stars are the pita pockets that are beautifully piled inside the bakery case/counter. At only $3 each, they make the perfect warm snack to fuel your farmer's market wanderings.i highly recommend the feta and spinach. They even have a vegan option! The food is reasonably priced for the amount you get. It's not my favorite Indian/Mediterranean food in KC, but it's a tasty, cheap, quick option for a day spent in the City Market! I usually get a chicken tikka wrap, and it comes with rice and veggie salad. Everything can be ordered mild, medium, or spicy. You place your order at the counter, and they call out a number when the food is ready. This gets a bit chaotic during peak hours. I recommend ordering a pita pocket (heated up, of course) to munch on while you wait for your order. If you are interested in the spices -- they have little clipboards with papers for you to write down what spices you want and how many scoops. The employees take your list and scoop the spices into bags. They have clean, empty spice bottles that you can pay for as well ($2 I think?) Once you get your order, you pay at the counter. The spices are reasonably priced (comparable to other bulk spice stores in river market), and they have just about anything you could imagine. You have to settle with river market lots or street parking. Super convenient for a lunch during a farmer's market day, but not convenient to pull over for quick take out (especially without online orders). read more

The array of spices caught my eye entering Tikka House. The lady that took our order was very friendly and our food came out pretty fast despite the line. We ordered the Chicken Tikka lunch plate for $7.99. I felt that the chicken tikka itself was a little dry and lacking flavor. The aroma and flavors of the spices were almost too subtle. That said, the portion size of the dish was good. It came with a side salad and tzatziki sauce, which provided an element of freshness. I was super excited to try this place as there is usually a decent line. We waited just over 30 minutes to be let down. There's a few tables outside of the building that you can sit at. There is two lines, one for spices and one for food. My rice was super mushy and lacked a lot of flavor. The chicken in my wrap was very dry and underwhelming. Not the mention it was missing tomato and onion as it states it has. I swapped the tahini for the tazitki sauce. There wasn't a lot of it and it was super runny and thin. My boyfriend got the butter chicken (forgot to get a picture). Unfortunately that was extremely dry as well and didn't have a butter chicken flavor at all. His rice however was much better. That's an incredible deal! Don't be scared away by the long line to purchase spices - and get yours here, while you're at it! This place has been the ONLY store I will buy seasonings and spices from for the past two years solid. The prices of spices have been rising rapidly for awhile now and it just doesn't make sense to get a small overpriced portion from chain grocery stores, when you can get it fresh and in bulk from this locally owned GEM! Whenever I have guests over to share a dish I've prepared they are always raving over the flavor! I let them in on my secret weapon -the creations made by the people at Tikka House who prepare new seasonings every so often. The service always speaks for itself whether it's extremely busy and the line is around the corner in the summer or it's not as busy on a cold January day. Every question will be answered and every reasonable request will be fulfilled. The food is made with love from what seems to be the grandmother of the generations, to the next generation taking orders, then the generation after that filling bags full of seasonings! I always joke about how I would love to work here on the weekends because this place is a like a live bar on a Saturday night, for people who really want to take their dishes to the next level. Being one of the many small businesses in the city market, I really wanted to love it, but was pretty disappointed with my experience. The shop itself is really cute, and they have a selection of spices you can sample for purchase. The menu is a mix of halal and Indian food. I ordered the lentil soup (which was a split pea dahl) and the vegan potato pita sandwich. My pita was really good and filling, but the lentil soup was luke warm. This place is my go to spot for spices ever since moving to Kansas City over 6 years ago. Their spicy garlic seasoning is phenomenal on anything you can think to put it on. The flavors don't stop there. Such an amazing array of herbs and spices! Their prepared foods are equally as good. The staff is always insanely helpful and friendly. The lady behind the counter was ultra sweet and friendly and the counter she guarded was filled with an economical little culinary snack. For $2 you can choose between 5 different pita pockets filled with savory fillings that are seasoned with spices that they also sell in house. i grabbed a gyro, steak, and spinach and feta to take to work with me. A cup of hot sauce and another with Tzatziki made for a great lunch and snack later for $6! A true bargain and an easy treat to get to go for eating on the run. If I don't sit down for a meal while I'm at the City Market, then you will probably find me roaming around munching on a hot little pita pocket. read more

I tried the chicken schwarma lunch special which also came with a cucumber salad and some rice, also tried their baklava, and one of their beef pita pocket things you can get at the front counter heated up. I ate the beef pita first but didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would. The ground beef on the inside didn't really go with the softness of the outside bread, it overall was very doughy and I was hoping for a little more solidity. The balkava was super hard and not the best I ever had. The chicken schwarma though is completely what boostwd this review. HOLY CRAP WAS THAT DELICIOUS! Tikka House in my mind earns top marks, they sell spices and they know how to use them too to make a few choice dishes that are ideal for lunch. I know there are lots of awesome spots in the river marker but this one should not be missed as they are very friendly here and it shows in the meals they prepare as they feel practically home made. If I was forced to pick a favorite dish it would be the lamb kabob as much as I try to vary things up, this dish paired with the tamarind drink seems to keep calling me for a killer lunch combo. I like to get the dishes medium with extra pepper on the side. Take note of the their opening times as they are open during the hours of the market. The Chicken Tikka is also a good option as it has a lot of great flavor and balance to it. There combo comes with yellow rice a Greek side salad and a cucumber salad in yogurt sauce. The wraps are quite good especially the shwarmas (beef and chicken), I do prefer the lunch combo option though i.e. without the wrap as the wrap does come with rice and salad . I do like the drinks offered as they pair well with the meals especially if you get the spicy option, I am particularly fond of the tamarind and the Mango are solid options and add a nice bit of sweet to the spice of your meal. They also feature pita pockets on hand if you are looking for a light snack to hold you over in the market, I like this sometimes if I am getting a smaller meal. They usually have baklava for a nice bit of a sweet treat after you meal. The meals here give a sense of freshness and flavor that leaves you with the sense that you made a guilt free choice so its an easy recommend over the typical lunch fairs that stress heavy meals or leave you bloated. Don't forget they are also a spice house so pick up a clipboard and pick up some from the large variety on offer. read more

The food here overall is good. I would like to point out however, that despite the name and classification as Indian food, the food is not exactly Indian per se. The food has both South Indian and Middle Eastern influences and while you may eat some familiar flavors, they are not quite what you'd see in a traditional Indian restaurant. Having said that though, this is still a place I would recommend especially if you are in the Rivermarket area and are in the mood for some warm food. I am vegetarian and they have a few options including some salads and appetizers as well as a wrap. The prices are reasonable on the whole and their customer service has always been good. The one thing I'd definitely recommend trying is their hummus - it is possibly the best hummus I've eaten in the past several years! I personally like the range of spices that they sell more than the food options themselves. The spices smell fresh and are always displayed outside on the weekends during the Farmer's Market. They have a wide variety of the common spices including turmeric and chili powder as well as those more common in South Asian cuisine including ground cumin, garam masala, etc. read more
