A bit back on the Moti Mahal train after some time off. It's been a staple for Indian food over the years despite battling some consistency issues. Way back in the day we'd dodge parking tickets to do carryout here in a dense corner of Westport, but these days with kids it's so much easier to pay the premium on a delivery service, so most times that's what we do. To me, their vegetarian entrees are stars of the show and easily shared between two people. In no particular order, the saag paneer, mutter paneer, and vegetable korma are equally delicious. Throw in some garlic naan, maybe a little rice pudding for dessert, and you've got a great meal. I do wish they could get the spice levels right because when it's medium spicy it's perfect, but often arrives far too mild. The onion bhajia is not very good. The gobi keema has a spice profile that is too unbalanced; it's also under-salted. The potato and pea pratha is not very good. Usually curries and chutneys spill into the bag by the time it's delivered, but everything was tightly wrapped. I started with the mango lassi - sweet, refreshing, but a little on the sour side. The vegetable samosas were crispy but could definitely have been spicier and more flavorful. I was a bit disappointed at how unseasoned the filling was. The food here is perfectly wonderful, and the atmosphere is nice too. Located on a pretty crowded central street of Westport, it has an imposing facade, but easily recognizable with the bright blue paint. While the waitress was not very friendly or talkative, the food was excellent. I've eaten in a few times, as well as gotten takeout. The good quality seems about typical of what you would pay for at most Indian food restaurants like this. Definitely a staple of my downtown food rotation! You know when body just craves the intense taste of a spiced curry?? Anyone? just me?? Anyways, was really wanting Indian food and Moti Mahal happens to be a few minutes drive from my house. I got the butter chicken and asked for it to be made spicy (a 4 on a scale out of 5). The butter chicken was creamy & delicious with just the perfect hint of chili and spice. The basmati rice and garlic naan I got on the side were really good as well (highly recommend getting naan with any entree). The basmati rice was a tad on the oily/buttery side to be honest. My friends got the pakoras which were pretty bad (both the potato and chicken pakoras), so I'd stay away from those. Other than that, I was happy with my meal and had enough to take as leftovers for the next day. We ate here for lunch on a weekday. We thought the food was adequate but over priced for what you get. We had the appetizer platter for $12.95, chicken Tikka Marsala and chicken korma plus an order of plain naan bread. There was almost no difference in the taste between the two chicken dishes. I had ordered mine mild but my husband wanted his to have medium spice. Both came with no spice. We drank water. Our lunch bill was slightly over $66.00. Service was also adequate. Great Indian buffet in Westport! I haven't seen many Indian restaurants in KC, so finding this place was a real treat. While their options were limited to about 10 dishes, the flavors were definitely there. Tandoori chicken, lamb tikki masala, and buttered chicken provided tasty protein options. They also had rice, salad and different desserts including the doughnut soaked in honey (can't remember the name for the life of me). Their vegitarian dishes were also mouth-watering. I'm not vegiterian, but Indian food has some of the best savory meat-less dishes ever, and Saag Paneer is my favorit of these. A blend of cooked spinach, goat cheese, and exotic spices - Moti Mahal has the best I've ever tasted. If you come for the Buffet, they include a small mango lassi (yogurt drink) and freshly made naan bread that you can use to dip in the more saucy foods. For the price, taste, and Westport location, I'd come back - I just wish they would expand their buffet to serve a few more dishes in the real spirit of an Indian buffet. read more

Holy moly, I'm in love with the big portions! I shared an entree with my wife and still had enough for lunch the next day. I'm not the most adventurous connoisseur of Indian food, so I usually get the most white-guy entree on the menu (i.e. the butter chicken). I have no shame in this, because I thoroughly enjoy the smooth, creamy taste of butter chicken (ordered as mild as mild can get to preserve my virgin taste buds). Tonight I didn't stray from my comfort zone and once again ordered the butter chicken to see how theirs compared to all the others I have had. I'm glad I did because it was exceptional! So good in fact, that I could have drank the sauce like a smoothie. Maybe next time... While we waited for our meal, we nibbled on some vegetable pakora. Of all the vegetable pakora I've had, this was one was not my favorite rendition. Why? Not a lot of vegetable and too much dough. It was well on its way to becoming a doughnut and tasted striking similar. Throw some glaze on it and you could sell them next door at the Doughnut Lounge. Hmm... I call dibs on the royalties for that idea. Besides the main dish, and appetizer already eluded to, we ordered garlic naan and cheese naan. Their naan is some of the thickest and most dense I have yet to experience (specifically the cheese naan). I personally liked it thick. It was very filling and gave it a unique composition that worked well with the meal. My appreciation for this place grew even more when the waitress brought out complementary rice pudding, chai tea, and some kind of frozen popsicle thing with our check. I could definitely see this place getting added to the butter chicken rotation. However, I do have one major complaint, the dirty cup/utensils. I am usually a big water drinker, but I hardly touched my glass tonight because the cup was too dirty for comfort. Poor service. Owner did not even try to hide her impatience, and our dishes were mixed up when they served. She may have been embarrassed for the waiter's mixup but was extremely uncourteous to us instead, trying to correct their mistakes. We were there for a friend's birthday and a few guys were unfamiliar with Indian spices. We asked her to explain one or two dishes, and she was annoyed and very short. At the end of our meal, some people in our group were trying to split bills. The lady walked to our table, scoffed, shook her head and walked away. she stood with the gentleman behind the cash drawer pointing to our table and made a fuss. Food wasn't even that great. I ordered chicken korma with coconut base substitute (lactose intolerant). I bit into several chunks of overcooked chicken and then two chunks of raw chicken. The taste of the chicken stood out distinctly from the sauce, meaning, preparation for the dish was mediocre. the lamb vindaloo was only average. when she served dessert (rice pudding and mango sorbet), the owner spoke to me, as if to announce, "oh, you cannot have this one. You cannot eat this, this isn't for you. Don't eat it." Then to the group, "she cannot eat this, no dessert for her." If it was a well-meaning sort of intent, I can totally understand. However, the way she came off was insensitive. Her tone of speech and disinterested gaze communicated condescending. on the other hand, well. Woman, i know you used milk. If i don't want to eat, don't you worry your mouth telling me my can's or cannot's. I've lived with lactose intolerance for more than 10yrs. Trust me when i say i know how to take care of myself. Ugh, sorry guys. I keep thinking that i want to write less aggressive reviews for poor restaurant experiences. When entering, I liked the décor. It was very simple and the space felt larger than OP korma sutra as well. We were seated fairly quickly, and we helped ourselves to the buffet. Choices were lacking compared to OP and I feel the quality was also not as good. The chicken was dry in some of the choices. I was looking for briyani but they did not have that. The mango lassi and naan they give you complimentary but they did not refill it at all during our meal. Check came quickly. I was still working on my first plate. The chai tea was good, especially on our rainy day. Its Very sweet though. I'll probably stick with OP korma sutra. Would have given this location a 3 but comparing it, it's definitely a 2 out of 5. read more

I came here for a dinner date on a Friday at 7pm. If you're looking for parking, then just park in the garage next to Char Bar and walk over since street parking was limited. This place was small and cozy with colorful decor. There were maybe five or six other tables already there eating. The staff was friendly and helpful. They even walked around the restaurant to see if anybody needed anything. There were a lot of choices on the menu to choose from, but we decided on the Korma Sutra Non-Vegetarian Dinner for two persons ($42.95). It had chicken samosas, coconut soup, lamb saag, basamati rice, chicken tika masala, naan, galub jamun, and carrot halva which was a variety of what was offered on the menu. There was also a vegetarian option as well for those interested. The food came out shortly after we ordered. The coconut soup was tasty, the chicken samosas were dry, the lamb saag was interesting in a good way, the chicken tika masala was delicious, the basamati rice and nann were delicious, the galub jamun was okay, and finally the carrot halva was sweet but good. It was enough food for two people and we had leftovers. BTW, the food still tasted good even as leftovers. I didn't take pictures of everything with my phone but that was fine. Got takeout from here. They use a lot of styrofoam. Tandoori chicken was good. Veggie korma was nice but very mild tasting, I think we will get lamb next time for some additional flavor. Samosas and mango lassi were both excellent. Garlic naan is good bread and they give you a lot but was hoping for lots more garlic itself, but I'm a garlic nut. I want to try more from the menu. I'll just start by saying I don't know much about Indian food, but wow, I enjoyed this place. We ordered a 4 person sampler platter and there was so much food! We ordered medium spice, wishing we hadn't, but if you're into spice, you'll love it! The naan was delicious, I couldn't get enough of it. The mango lassi was smooth and so so good. The staff were friendly and attentive. They even gave us extra rice for our to-go boxes. Lots of random extra goodies were given to us too. A mango popsicle, rice pudding, chai tea. I called before coming for the price of the buffet and was told 10.99. At first thought I was like that's a couple dollars more than I'm use to. I wanted to visit anyway due to not having Indian down here and the reviews were great. Also my date never tried Indian at all and we had to have the best near. Yo my surprise naan and mango lassi comes with the buffet. So I didn't feel so bad about the price any longer. Not sure if they give seconds on this, we happen to not eat it all. The special today was lamb and boiled eggs. I stayed away from the eggs but the lamb was amazing. It's something about the taste of lamb meat alone is great but the sauce it was in was good too.
