The staff member serving food had her hair down, which didn't feel sanitary. Overall, this venue needs significant improvements in organization, cleanliness, and communication.

The "club" feels like an old-school swim club, complete with high school/college life guards, a snackbar selling inexpensive junk food, a GROSS bathroom to get changed in, and 3 pools. (All of which are HIGHLY chlorinated so you feel like you GOTTA shower right when you get out. The baby/toddler pool - oddly enough - is not as icky as the "medium sized" pool that has a 2.5 foot shallow end. This is the pool my daughter just LOVED - and when we arrived it was filled with kids from a nearby camp group. Once they left the noise level improved considerably. The large "main" pool has a deep (12 foot) diving area with a low and high board, lap lanes and a recreational swimming area that starts at 3.5 feet. It is also heated. We are happy we had a chance to come here. $600 for the summer seems a litle steep - but if you live in the area and don't have your own pool - and if you have kids - this is probably a good option.

But since I just moved to the area, I thought it was important to enroll my little one in something where she could make new friends locally. I thought it would be a wonderful opportunity for some good exercise, learning to follow multiple-step instructions, learning about thinking positively/feeling a sense of achievement, healthy eating, etc. But none of my hopes came to fruition at all. (And I know what I was looking for wasn't over-the-top, because I've seen this sort of positive environment before at a different location, and also experienced it myself at my adult trapeze class.) - After 6 classes, the coach NEVER introduced herself to me. I learned her name the last day because I asked. She also never introduced the kids to one another. My daughter only learned the names of any other kids because when week 3 rolled around and I asked her who her favourite friends were at the class, she couldn't tell me any names. I said, "Oh, well go introduce yourself! Just say, 'My name is X, what's your name?'" She left the class with 4 names that day. When you're in gymnastics, isn't one of the biggest goals to develop a good team mentality? How did the kids go un-introduced the entire time they practiced and played together? - I only knew the name of the receptionist/business owner because of a purchase confirmation. She never said hello when we came into the building. She DEFINITELY never asked if my daughter was enjoying the class. She never apologized after a scheduling mix-up. She spoke poorly to me of her own daughter right in front of her, in a facility that supposedly is supposed to encourage kids to have a good self-image. Put a bad taste in my mouth, for sure. Her kid wasn't even much older than mine. - Apparently, parents were supposed to receive a progress update every couple weeks, but, like I said, the coach never so much as introduced herself. - They sell soda, cookies, chips, and other junk food as a snack for after a class that's supposed to promote good health. - Dust is caked on everything. There are these huge vents that are painted jewel-toned primary colours, which you can see from beneath, but even so, you can't see through the dust on the top halves of the tubes. At first, I thought that only the bottom halves were painted! - The bathrooms are always gross. I didn't feel comfortable getting my daughter changed for class in there. - The coach is nice enough to the kids, but isn't able to give any of the kids any sort of individual attention due to there being too many kids per class. Since they do activities in "rotations", the coach will often be distracted by a single activity while the kids wander to the other rotations without instruction. Typically, the kids watch whichever kid is in front of them for direction. The only reasons I have to NOT rate it 1 star are: because my daughter had fun there, anyway; because it seems like the competition classes have more skillful coaches; and because a lot of kids benefit from the activity days there, where at least they're socializing instead of being parked in front of a TV. I don't suggest enrolling your 3-4 year old there.

The parking lot is huge and there is no problem. The courts are well maintained. The space between courts is manageable. There is a stadium court with bleachers. We didn't play there. The facility has Porta potty, or you have to go inside the facility at the main entrance to use the restrooms.the locker rooms and restrooms are very nicely maintained. The staff is very friendly, and then I used one of the places to use my laptop and got the wifi password as well. There is a pro shop that carries a lot of tennis essentials and racquets, a stringing machine too. They do carry occasional racquets on sale.

As a Hempfield resident for 15 years I've had many interactions with the Rec Center. While I've…read morenever been a member, I've attended free classes when they were available, went on a bus trip they offered, had my daughter in the after school childcare program they run, as well as a dance class. More recently I've paid a per person daily fee to use the pool, although it does also allow you to use the entire facility. One thing I will say is it is aways crowded, no matter what time or where you are in the building. Classes fill up quick. Swimming classes are booked several months in advance, and the lot is always full. One thing that is disappointing, hence the 4 stars instead of 5 is the before/after school program. While when my daugher was in school it was available to any parent that needed it. Now, they have limited spots and no opening. My grandson has been on a wait list now since August and it's now Feb. That sucks for working parents! And it could very well be a sign of the times post covid, with employee shortages. The indoor pool is wonderful. I have yet, even after all these years been to the one outside in season but I'm sure it's equally as impressive. The indoor pool is large, and while you do need to check the schedule for free swim times, they do have it roped off for laps. I believe it goes to 13' and has a diving board. There's tables/chairs around the pool to put your stuff and a changing area in that area. There is also locker rooms down the hallway. The ladies has a dry sauna, showers, and a machine that rings out your suits. I especially like that pool toys, floats, and swim aids are allowed, as I take my three young grandchildren, none of which can swim. You do need to bring your own towels, etc. I do think the pricing is high for membership as well as a $10/per person daily rate if like me you just stop in to use the pool. The $10/pp was firm, even for my one grandson who is an infant. Still a great place to patronize. Check their website because they are very community minded and some of their special events do not require membership although they might have a small fee.

A small dock allows for kayaks and paddle boards to be put in the water, but the stairs down to the dock are not in good condition, so use caution There are several bike and hiking paths, but recent floods have closed some of the paths, so again, use care. It is interesting to see these canal Locks. So much commerce went up and down PA using canal's w/locks. To see one up close and personal, this is the spot to do it.
