Gerard listened to exactly what I wanted, was thorough in his execution, and I left feeling very happy - definitely NOT "meh". :) For reference, I had a partial highlight and haircut. My color may not look complex, but I am very particular about having my highlights blend naturally (zero demarcation line) and Gerard totally delivered on this. LOVE my haircuts from this salon! I've had 1 by Caroline and 2 by Heidi, and won't be going anywhere else for cuts (OR color, since Heidi corrected my roots at the Bethesda location!) Heidi makes great suggestions for the cut and was able to work with the breakage I currently have. She made my broken hair chunks look intentional, blending them into a shaggy/layered cut, that looks like it will grow out really nicely! I haven't taken good pics since my most recent cut by Heidi, but will update this review with those soon! I had such a lovely hair appointment with Heidi Woo. I came in with some seriously burnt out hair (multiple rounds of balayage had left my super fine hair yellow and brittle). I wasn't sure what I needed (more balayage?!), but Heidi immediately suggested a combination of highlights and lowlights to bring back a healthy glow and restore a natural look to my hair. She expertly chose an ash-toned color combination, with a few warm accents, which worked perfectly for me. She then carefully cut off three inches of hair which were no longer serving me. The multi dimensional color and short, blunt cut have add volume and jujj back to my hair. I've gotten tons of compliments and feel much younger with my new do. I had a great experience yesterday at Salon Gerard. My 4th grade daughter wanted something "less boring" than her long ponytail, so I checked out Yelp and called a few places. We ended up here because: a) it's very reasonably priced - $20 for kids under 13 b) they had time available right away, and c) Gerard was so nice on the phone, even calling me back on his day off The setting is small, calm and quiet. Gerard spent an hour giving my daughter an awesome layered cut, and it only cost a couple of dollars more than going to a chain haircut place or a barber. Gerard is so nice and approachable, I'm sure everyone would get along with him. Definitely not scary or intimidating for kids or anyone else looking for a new place. As an added bonus, you can park for an hour under the Kennedy Warren for free ($6 for the 2nd hour) - turn into the driveway just a few feet west of the entrance to the zoo parking lot. I'm often disappointed by the service I get at local business compared to the prices I pay, so this was an amazingly positive experience from beginning to end. Next up will be my 12 year old son, who's now at the age to get a "style" versus a plain ol' barbershop buzz cut. read more

I was a regular customer at Salon Gerard for about a year. Or, rather, I was a regular customer of Mary, a former hair stylist at Salon Gerard. Mary left Salon Gerard about a year after I became a client, but she recommended another stylist for me at the salon. I made an appointment with the stylist Mary recommended and then a few days later the receptionist called back with a request from Gerard, the owner: I was not to return. My offense: I had previously expressed to Mary the observation that the Cleveland Park neighborhood that houses Salon Gerard was attracting a lot of panhandlers these days. Gerard the owner was offended by my remark, according to the receptionist. This is a disrespectful way to treat a loyal customer and for the most meaningless of reasons. I didn't make any disrespectful comments about the panhandlers in Cleveland Park or the neighbor or itself - I simply noted the increase. Avoid Salon Gerard and visit another salon with a rational owner who understands that loyalty works both ways. read more

I'm new-ish to DC and haven't had my hair done in months. I decided impulsively to book an appointment on a day off. I booked the day before through yelp and had no issues! The place was walking distance from my apartment and very easy to find based on the directions they sent in an email. I saw Caroline for a light blonde balayage and she did an incredible job! honestly, wish i could give more than five stars. Caroline Cafferty hath slayed my existence. I came in with super jacked up looking hair, bleached terribly at home from dark brown to a gross blonde w purple and green (i looked so crusty the before photo does not do it justice), and she got me to the lilac i wanted. she took time to talk to me, see photos of what i wanted and she worked SO HARD so make sure my hair was exactly what i wanted. Both times I've been to Salon Gerard, I've seen Rachel and she's done an excellent job! The highlights I got the first time were very warm and natural looking and even thought they're starting to grow out, they look great. My haircuts by Rachel have both been really quick and look exactly how I want! The location can be a little tricky to find and there's not much in the way of parking, but the salon itself is very nice. The prices are pretty standard for the area. Not only did she style my short hair appropriately for a job interview, she gave me makeup tips and didn't make me feel rushed even though I was ten minutes late to my appointment. Someone needs to set the record straight for this salon, as I am new to town and came here due to its high rating on sites like Yelp, Google and Facebook. 1. The dye job was not what I wanted. I asked for a popular "Rose Gold". Although I had a picture of what I wanted, I left with anime convention magenta hair and remarks about how the stylist does not "get" how some of the most popular hair color trends of today are in. 2. The coffee they offer you are k-cups, but they don't tell you that. So if you have Celiac Disease and are allergic to the gluten contained in the flavorings of K-cups, obviously this will affect you. Blatant disregard of my health and my image. The stylist offered to "fix" my hair and was completely kind, but I couldn't bring myself to trust anyone in this establishment. I loved, loved, loved my experience here. I recently moved to DC, and was in need of a color and a cut. I am an actor so my image is my business, but that also means I'm on a budget. This place gave me AMAZING color, and beautiful cut for $90. Quite a steal. When I arrived, I had multiple colors going on- box dye and professional highlights-, a ton of really stubborn white hair right in the front, and dry, split ends. Gerard did it all, and in a really spectacular way. The cut got rid of my dry, crunchy ends, and lays beautifully whether it's blow dried or air dried. The rainbow of colors went away giving me exactly what I asked for, and in the past my white hairs don't take the dye and are back after a week. Not this time. It has been 2 weeks with my regular washing routine- pretty much every day- and the dye is just as rich as it was when I left the salon. And my white hairs are still covered!!! He also gave me a extra moisturizing treatment, no charge. Gerard is a exceptional stylist, and very kind, genuine human. I cannot recommend him and his salon enough. read more

Gerard's hair cuts and hair blow-outs have been excellent. Knowing that I spend minimal time on styling, he has given me hair cuts that fit my face and my schedule. He is happy to give advice on how to style your hair at home and my hair looks good even when I style it myself (but not as good as when he does it). Several years ago, Gerard did my hair for my wedding and I looked fabulous. Also did some of the wedding party who all looked great. You can now come get ready in his salon - I bet it would be a fabulous way to start your wedding. I no longer live in DC, but have not yet found a hair dresser I like. So I took advantage of a recent visit to get a haircut. One of the best ones I have had in a long time. Been looking for a salon in my hood for a while and I think this may be The One. I found it using a salon app-it was one of the few that had Sunday appointments (if you are a salon and are closed on Sunday, WHY)...there was plenty of street parking and, while I got a little mixed up trying to find it in the beautiful, older apartment building, the guys at the desk pointed me in the right direction. It is a cozy, small salon which is a nice change of pace from the loud hustle n bustle of a larger place. Mary did a rad job--I have a ton of hair and it's long, but she took her time to get all the highlights and lowlights just right. Plus there was pressure to buy products or get a cut AND the price was the best I've seen for the services in a long time...Salon Gerard is a honest, straightforward business with friendly, professional folks that know how to do hair! My hair was also very dead and I notice it looks much more healthy after the products she used. She took so much time out of her day to fix my hair and it shows. She was so nice and friendly. 2 plus weeks after my haircut with Gerard, I'm still getting compliments and/or "Did you just get a haircut?" questions. I think that's the mark of a great cut! Usually you look good when you leave the salon, because you've had a blowout after the cut. But a truly great cut continues to make you look (and feel) great in the days and weeks afterwards! I've been here a couple times now with Rachel and she truly is a master of color. Last spring she did my blond highlights and they looked amazing. I don't get my hair done often and she colored it masterfully so as it grew out it still looked amazing. This fall I decided to go for a dark brown color. She did a great job but my color didn't turn out as dark as I had hoped because my hair was so light to begin with. I slept on it and the next day Rachel reaches out to make sure I was happy and if not that she would correct it. I decided to color my hair at this salon for the first time because it had great reviews. The webpage informed of the cost of the hair cut with color, but when I went to pay it the price was significantly higher. I was never informed that I would be paying extra because the stylist was an "artisan" until AFTER my hair was done. But, the haircut did not go well for me at all! I asked for a natural dark/medium brown and she gave me a reddish-Auburn brown. I explicitly showed her photos of what I wanted.
