I've been going to this Dominican salon for over 10 years. I randomly found it while walking in Adams morning from the college dorm at the time. As a New Yorker it was referencing to come to a true Dominican salon that made me feel like I was back home. This is the only place I will get my hair done at in the DMV. The prices vary. This place does both male and female hair. The most expensive thing I've ever got was a texturized and hair colored at different times for $75 but it included a trim. Sylvia is who I usually go to and if she's not in which is rare than I go to Gisela. Honestly, every stylist there does a great job. I've gotten my hair trimmed, colored, relaxed, and texturized at some point here. I highly recommend. It's clean, the stylist are friendly and know what they're doing. This is not the place for a fancy hair style this is a true Dominican hair salon. All stylists ensure healthy hair. I always make it a rule not to get my hair done anywhere where the stylists hair is not as fabulous as they guarantee to make mine. Everyone's hair is always on point and extremely healthy! Over the years I've seen theses stylist many of which have been here for the decade I've been going change their hair multiple times. So clearly I mentioned a bunch of pros above including this is located in the heart of Adams Morgan near the many shops and dinning. What better way than to get your hair done, feel brand new, and show off your hair and or treat yourself to a drink at the many nearby bars. Cons - this is not directly by a metro station. The closets stations are DuPont Circle, it's a little of a walk from the south entrance or about a 10 minute walk or so from the Columbia Heights train stop. Both trains have bus that will stop you a few feet from the entrance. There's also a Woodley park circulator too. All in all I love this place obviously because it's 93 degrees outside and I'm in here relaxed :) read more

This place is wonderful. I'm only in town for a few weeks and was recommended by my aunt (who's gone here for like 20 years.) Shop is super clean, stylists are REALLY nice, and they got me right in, even as a walk in. One caveat: Make sure you're EXPLICITLY clear about expectations! I brought in all my own products bc of some severe allergies & told my stylist that I do that because "I'm allergic to the world". Ended up having to rewash and dry because I DIDN'T say, "Don't use ANY other products on my hair or else I'll end up in the ER"! Lol... This place really does an excellent job on natural hair. It comes out shiny and healthy and looks great. Two problems with my experience there that result in the loss of a star: 1) There is almost no point to making an appointment there. I listened today as two people called to ask for reservations and my stylist never even paused to write anything down. They will simply work you in when they can, which can be a while depending on when you come in. 2) As a young woman with both an African father and a degree in Spanish, I do not appreciate all the conversation about the texture of my hair and the need to use "miracle" products to get through it. It is unprofessional and I find it offensive. And I am not the only person the stylists gossiped about, I was just the only one who understood. read more

I try to go another Dominican salon to do a relaxer when I move to VA and they charged me 250 dollars for the roots only!!!! The other salon in Adams morgan charges 55 for a blow dry. They are the worse! First, yes its always crowded. But i'll give it to them because they are cost effective. However, my frustration came, when i finally decided to sit and wait with the crowd. It was about 5:25 pm, by the time I walked in (25 min looking of parking) the sign on the door says they close at 6:30 pm. I walk in, the lady looks at me and says "Sorry we take our last wash at 5:15pm. I said "But the sign on the window says you are open and the times say 6:30pm. The receptionist says "yes, we like to leave the salon at 6:30pm" I said, that's fine, then turn your "open" sign off, because you are not taking anymore people. Very frustrated, especially after looking for parking so long and when i couldn't find a spot, i paid for parking. If you do go, be prepared to stay for a few hours to wait for Gisela - and don't let anyone else touch your hair. The salon is dirty. I watched them cut several people's hair in the same chair without sweeping up. I was especially disappoints because I made an appointment with Gisela - and while we're on appointments, your really shouldn't bother. They only seem to care about appointments for friends and long-time regulars. They were so unprofessional, talking about me while I'm right in front of them (entiendo, mujeres). Gisele didn't remember me from last time and handed me off to another woman like a walk-in. They jacked my hair. Why doesn't anyone seem to get that a little trim while my hair is wet is like three inches when my hair is dry? I got a random tip about this place and decided to give it a shot. I was nervous at first because of the language barrier, but I ended up having an excellent experience. I got a deep conditioning treatment and trim. My stylist was named Haydee I believe, and she did such an amazing job. My hair was completely revitalized! I told her I did not want a blow dry but she was worried about me getting cold and even went as far as to style my hair for free! I really can't recommend this place enough. Talk about dishonest! So came to relax my hair, was told the cost was 85USD and since I was not going out, asked that my hair be wrapped. Was warned that would be an extra 3 bucks cuz of bobby pins- I said fine. When handed my bill I was charged over 98 USD instead of 88 USD. Asked the lady if the difference were taxes and she says yes. 10 bucks is not a big deal but do not lie!! A review on the hair: the hairstylist did a good job relaxing my hair. Did not burn my scalp and seemed to know what she was doing. Thought she used too much heat on my scalp afterwards though. I just got my hair relaxed, why would she need to blow out relaxed hair? Did not like that at all and thought it unnecessary given how well my hair was relaxed. Would I go back? I usually go to Giovani when I am in dire need of a style and my regular shop is closed. The service is usually okay but the quality of care...meh...I've had so much better. PROS - They use the best hair care products (Mizani, Paul Mitchell, etc.). - The place is clean and convenient. - The blow dryers will not singe your brains. - The prices are very affordable (~ $35 for wash, set, and deep condition) CONS - The stylists I have experienced have absolutely no experience with natural African American hair. The lady was clueless about washing my hair and straightening my roots. - The stylists I have experienced have absolutely no concept of style. - Spritzing my roots to straighten my hair?! NO NO!! - They do not accept credit cards. Overall, the prices and products are the best but get ready to redo your own hair after you leave the shop. The service is always friendly and I get to practice my Spanish while I am there There do an adequate job at cutting men's hair. Just an adequate job, I wouldn't go here if it weren't convenient. It would have been a three star review, but the last time I went there, it was a Tuesday, and I rushed there from work. I made it there at 6:21pm, they close at 6:30 and wouldn't see me. My hair doesn't take very long to cut, and I made it there with time to spare. I was very frustrated, left, and found a place in Mt. I've been going to Sylvia for years and years. She under processed my relaxer and said nothing. I came back to her a few days later obviously disappointed because it was frizzy, curly, and tangling. If she told me before I had left what happened and discussed a plan to fix it, this would've been a different situation. She agreed to fix it for free but when I returned two months later, as we discussed, she charged me full price. She told me it would have only been free if she added a little relaxer to the under processed parts. 1) She clearly forgot half of my head was under processed, some parts severely. 2) I'm no expert but that doesn't sound like proper hair care. I'm seeing now that the some of the parts that needed correcting are still under processed after relaxer 2. I'm pretty upset that someone I've been loyal to for over 6 years would do any of that to me. And that she operates like that in general. I won't be returning. read more

Went to this salon every week for 3 years: Pros: -if you have a relaxer, from a short term perspective you leave with your hair bouncy and flowing in the wind -open on sundays and some holidays -not as pricy as other salons -use fairly good products -they now have a credit card machine -Sylvia is great for weekly maintenence but do not let her cut/trim or color your hair -Gisela is more of a stylist in my opinion but you will have to deal with her moods once in a while. her chair stays full so she does not focus too much on customer service Cons: -if you are deciding to transition, this is not the place for you. the heat is too intensive for the many textures you will experience during your hair journey. -they sometimes do not understand what you are saying, horrible language barrier (but they speak great english when it is time to pay...lol) -parking sucks! point blank -during the summer, sitting under those dryers doubles the heat intensity in the shop (i would have sylvia blow dry my shirt first because i sweated so much under the dryer) -after about 3 years of going, i decided to stop getting relaxers (8 months post relaxer). I had to stop going to this salon and cut off 3-4 inches of my hair that was basically damaged from the extensive weekly heat. I think its a clear issue when you can see smoke coming from your scalp when getting a blow out, and thats after an hour burning up under the dryers. -you have to go during the day to avoid no wait -they sometimes use the "lets try this" method which i dont like. im not solving for a medical issue, I just wanted my hair healthy. Things to consider: -all hair types are different, my girlfriends still go to this salon and rave about it. however, again, they all have relaxers and their hair is very thick. -the heat on your hair follicles not be sustained over a long period of time. Its way too much if you want to retain your curl pattern. If you ever want to try transisitoning or wearing your natural hair, you will have to suck it up like i did. Double the amount you pay and invest in a salon that specializes in natural black hair. Dominicans do hair the same way for everyone and everyone is different. -this was my personal experience but just wanted to be honest as possible. i hated going somewhere else because i did not want to deal with $65 wash and sets but the investment in my hair outweighed the eventual baldness i would experience if i remained a dedicated customer at Giovanis..... read more

This salon is a piece of crap not worthy of your dollars, particularly if you are an African-American. They don't what the f*ck they are doing and charge heavily for their incompetence. I called before I came on a Monday around 12 to let them know I was coming and was told it was fine. I assumed there would be no wait. I had a very important interview later on and my previous arrangements had fallen through. A friend had recommended this place, telling me they only charge 25 dollars. I arrived, explained that I needed nothing but a flat iron to be told by Edith that she would be available in 10 minutes. I ended up waiting 20. I sat in the chair and was asked if I was sure I didn't want a blow-dry. My hair was already blow dried, but I asked if she thought I needed it. She said yes. I asked how long it would take: 4 minutes. I said okay. She began to conversing with another stylist in spanish, who told me that it would be 35 for a flat iron and 45 if I wanted it blown out first. I was shocked, and pointed to the price board which list the prices for both a shampoo, set, and blow dry and a wash, set, and flat iron at 35 and had led me to believe my price might even be less seeing as how there was no washing or setting involved. The stylist replied smugly, "It says and up." This was ridiculous seeing as how the prices for those services included washes and sets and I was getting nothing of the sort. I said I would take my chances with the 35 dollar job and that 45 was too much. I was then informed that she wouldn't do it for less than 45 and explained that, "[my] hair is very hard." While my hair is natural, it is soft, not very kinky and is relatively straight when blow dried and presses easily. Mind you, she saw my hair when I first arrived, knew what I wanted, and saw no reason to raise these concerns then, but instead, wasted 20 minutes of my life. I look over to see that this 45 flat iron job would be done with a crappy second rate flat iron nowhere near CHI quality-- think 10 dollar swapmeet quality that literally buzzes when its in use -_- I was TOO THROUGH. -- I received a subpar blow out seeing as how my air was already blow-dried when she started. Ive had better with my hair wash from scratch -- She burned the front of my head! Something that has never happened with a flat iron or when I was having my hair done by a professional. -- I was forced to spend time working on my presentation writing this review. -- She didn't even curl it! I am not sure whether they saw fit to take advantage of me seeing as how I was in my interview clothes and in a hurry and typing on my laptop. But I certainly felt extremely disrespected, ripped off, and APPALLED. This hair has been on my head my entire life, so you can imagine that I have had it done a number of times and have never encountered anything as foolish as this! It is situations like this which remind me not to mercy of other ethnicities' mistreatment in the pursuit of straight hair. In the future if I do decide to straighten my hair I ill be sure to make time do it myself or with someone who atlas has hair like me. If they cant handle even the most agreeable natural hair, perhaps they should stick to Dominicans and people of European descent. Here it is ten years later and everytime I'm in DC I always walk right in and get a blow out with no problems. Currently I am in the process of going natural. The results were awesome. I have coarse hair and it looked like I had just got a relaxer. Gisela is my favorite and the girl (forgot her name) that washed my hair gave me a hairgasm. Lots of ppl suggested that I try a Domincan salon but I was hesitant because were I'm from Domincans doing hair is not so popular....basically I never heard of this till I moved to the East coast.......BUT BABY let me tell you Sondra whipped my hair PERFECTLY. This is my second review of Dominican salons in this area. I'm looking for a place that does a great wash, set, and blow. I went on a Sunday at about 11 am. I was a bit nervous because I didn't find the usual fog of blow dryer smoke usually encountered in Dominican salons. The salon was clean and tidy. The World Cup was playing on the TV. No loud music playing in the background :-). There was no other customers waiting but all the stylist had someone in their chair. I waited about 15 minutes before getting called to get washed. I received a thorough washing of 3 shampoos plus a conditioner and she detangled my hair at that point. I skipped the deep conditioner to save time. She rolled my up and I was under a dryer in about half hour from the time I started my was. She put me in a corner dryer next to shampoo station. I was a bit hesitant as there were many other dryers available without being cramped into the corner, but she assured me this was the best dryer. Well this dryer was super hot! I was dry in 45 mins (I usually take 60+ mins). She took my rollers out and proceeded to blow my out. She asked if I liked what she was doing, which way I wanted my hair styled, etc. Very customer service oriented. She even apologized once for talking to one of her co-workers while she was washing me, that's like unheard of! Anyway I wish I remember her name, cause she was super nice and friendly. I was happy with my hair, it stayed straight in this last week of humidity. It was $35 and I left a $5 tip. I would recommend this place to a friend and I would go back. I prefer this place to Judith's Salon (see my review) based on salon cleanliness, decor, atmosphere, and customer service ( I can only speak on that one stylist though). read more

Never going back!! Loved the Price ($25)... I guess you get what you pay for but.... Customer Service should never be devalued!! I went to Giovanni's almost every week for several months but got varying service until ultimately I was fed up. Not to mention the varying price. One day is $25 then the next week it would be $30., then back to $25 and even tried $35 with no explanation. (They got their $25 as the receipt stated!) My last visit I had a late appt and while looking for parking (it's horrible in Adams Morgan) I called to let her know as such. She (my stylist) said it was okay. So I parked within 3 mins and walked in. She then said I can't take you now! It's too late. Mind you she was in the process of rolling someone else's hair. So how is it she couldn't do mine but could do someone else's at my appt time!!! Why would she tell me that it was ok on the phone but not when I came in???! If not, i would've rescheduled versus parking and coming in! And since she was doing someone's hair anyway, I wouldn't have been seen at my appointment time anyway. Downsides are: It's a hit or miss on the dryer situation! (and if the power goes out-who knows) several of us have walked out (with rollers) when this has happended. You may or may not be seen at your appt time. The wait time is usually 15mins or more. U pay extra for the wrapping or pinning your hair. (Bring your own hair pins!) If you don't have a translator, it may be a challenge to describe what you want other than wash & set. Upsides: Price $25 $5 Deep Conditioning $5 Ends clipped (really not clipped well though, lol) Relaxer $55 (last time I went) Went to Visions the next day and liked the service way better. I have been to giovani a few times. For the price they do were doing a good job and by good I mean they never get my roots so i still have to go home and flat iron it , putting even more heat. So after the long drawn out process I ask her to get my root while blow drying my root she puts the blow dryer to close and BURNS my edges! I did not notice until a few weeks later when i wet my hair. I would NOT RECOMMEND you mess up the health of your hair to spare a few bucks!. read more

After moving back to DC in 2000, I needed to find a Dominican Salon. So I was told to go to Giovani in Adams Morgan. At only $25, I thought - what a bargain. It's the same system as all the others - wash, roll, blow dry. But after a year or so, I stopped going because I hated leaving the salon without a style. I have been going to this salon since 2008 and sadly today was my last day. Gisela is an awesome stylist and has taken great care of my hair over the past 6 years. It was a hard decision to part ways and I hate that I have to give her less than a stellar rating and review. However, she has no respect for her customers time. This morning I got to the salon at 9:25 am. I was her first client and she immediately started on me. I received the same services I receive on a weekly basis, wash, deep conditioner, roller set and a blowout. At 11:00 am I came from under the dryer and Gisela was washing out a relaxer so I proceed to the wait area by her station. When she comes from the back she comes with a different client that had come in after me and proceeds to roll her. By the time she finishes rolling her its is now 11:45 am. You would think at this point her priority would be to service me and get me out the door since I had been there since 9:25 am. Instead of taking me she looks at me and tells me five more minutes and takes another client who had also come in after me. So I speak up and say Gisela I have been waiting for 45 minutes since I came from under the dryer and I have been here since 9:25 am. She completely disregards me and continues to roll the other client. The same amount of time it took her to roll that client is the same amount of time it took her to blow me out. To me that didn't make sense. If I can wait for other clients to be rolled, they can wait for me to be blown out especially since this is the last thing that I need done so I can be out the door. This has happened on several occasions over the past several years and I have spoken up once before and Gisela was very apologetic. But this time she didn't even seem to care. When she finished with that client I let her blow me out and I left. After I left I thought about it. I am in that salon every Friday some time Saturday such as today and I've been a client for 6 years. I doubled back asked for my products I keep at the salon and spoke with the owner to let her know what I had experienced. She said something to Gisela and they proceeded to speak in Spanish so I had no idea what they were saying. I thought that was very rude since they both speak English very well so I spoke up and told Melby it was okay and I just wanted to let her know why I wouldn't be coming to the salon anymore. I was told the policy was first in first out but obviously it's not. This is my experience with Gisela. From what I have seen I don't think this is the case with the other stylist and their clients so I wouldn't make my decision to go to this salon or not based on one stylist.
