I had a really great experience, my piercing wasn't painful, and Nik did a great job and was very friendly. The only reason I'm rating 3 stars is because the pricing wasn't clear and I ended up spending almost twice as much money as I was expecting (I was told the total would be about $90, but it ended up being $140 +a tip). Be sure to ask a lot of questions and clarify the pricing before you have your piercings done!! UPDATE: re-rating 2 stars. The post used for my piercing was too short for the section of my ear that was pierced, and I had to have it removed because my ear was having trouble healing and began trying to heal over the back of my earring. I'm annoyed that I spent so much for a piercing that ultimately had to be removed! read more

I came here because I wanted to get my ears pierced by someone who knew what they were doing , not a Claire's. Now I'm wishing I would've gone there instead. After Nick pierced my ears unevenly (they are noticeably asymmetrical on each respective lobe) he sent me home with after care instructions. Which consisted only of letting water run against the piercings while I was in the shower. Seemed weird to me but again, i thought these guys know what they're doing. So I followed those instructions to the T and came back six months later to swap out the jewelry and move on with my life. He noticed the piercings (especially one) were still healing (puffy, red, painful, bleeding a lot) six months later and told me to start daily salt water cleansing on them. Ok, great, if that's what it'll take to get them to heal, I will do anything (it was then and remains unhealed and painful). So a couple months later I think they're healed enough to swap out the jewelry myself with some new stainless steel earrings I had bought (they weren't cheap!). Only to find out (without ever having been told) that the type of studs he put in my ears are damn near impossible to swap out yourself. One bloody painful bathroom cleanup later, I was able to shove the entire post back into the ear I tried to swap, but it pissed it off and made it inflamed and angry again, even worse. I go in the next day seeking help, only to be charged $10 for Nick to put them back in correctly. and then I am told "oh yeah, well anytime you want to swap your earrings just come in here and we'll do them for you." So not only can I not change my own jewelry, I have to pay you to do it for me ??? Bull! I was never told this and would've never agreed to this had I known. As these were my first piercings, the lack of communication and poor aftercare instructions Talisman provided -- paired with the flippant disrespectful attitude of the other young woman cashier, who made me feel like an absolute nuisance for coming in to look at new jewelry one afternoon -- leaves me sorely disappointed in this supposedly reputable establishment. Not just sorely disappointed but SORE: almost a YEAR later one ear has not healed correctly despite religiously following the laughable aftercare instructions and generally being a hyper-hygienic person. Oh, and I still can't get my earrings taken out without going in to pay $10. They're still in my ears almost a year later. My suggestion? Go to Claire's. read more

First off, I can't speak to their tattoo work. I just got my ears pierced here, like first holes, cause I'm a fifth grader. I've spent my fair share of time in tattoo shops/getting tattoos, and this seemed pretty nice. Everyone was friendly, everything seemed clean and professional. They have a huge, really nice (a little pricey) jewelry selection. Some of the larger gauge size pieces were really beautiful. Anyways, Phil did my piercing and it was awesome. I'm a little bit of a freak about piercing sanitation specifically and he walked me through the whole thing. This wasn't a Claire's, scary plastic gun situation. Everything is autoclaved, all needles are new, he went over what he was doing and using multiple times. On top of that, he was really friendly and funny. I would suggest going here even for basic stuff. read more

Today, I went to see a man about a nose piercing, and that man was Phil Temer. Down to earth and understanding, he walked me through every step of the process with intention. I imagine that some people who know their shit thoroughly, like Phil, may get bored with explaining the process to newbies, but I felt welcomed, taken care of, and treated like a human being instead of a number. He gets bonus points in my book for questioning my willingness to go with what I *thought* I should get (a stud) instead of what I *really* wanted (a hoop). I went in looking for a nose ring. I'm not sure if the girl that helped me didn't feel like I should be there or what but she started out being a little friendly and got ruder as people were walking in. I was looking at the different nose rings and asking questions and at one point she looked up at another customer and mouthed "sorry" as if I was in both of their way. She did ask me to scoot over so another customer could look at the jewelry. I should have walked out at that point but I did not. I selected my jewelry and asked about a hoop and wanted something small. She looked at me and said I will get you the size I think will fit. Again, I should have walked out. She asked if that was all and she would package them up, never offering to put the jewelry in for me. She went to the back and brought my jewelry to me and gave me the total. When she brought me my change she said here's your jewelry, walked away and sat down at the computer. She never said thank you, go screw yourself, nothing. I will never step foot in that place again. I was kicking myself as I left wondering why I had just paid to be treated that way. read more

While I was waiting I could hear him going over cleanliness and sterilization practices with another piercer in the back. I was really impressed by how thorough he was. Wow. So why didn't I get the same stellar service on my 2nd visit?! I've had my eyebrow pierced for 29 years with no infection. I was bored with my jewelry so my partner offered to buy me some as a gift. I put together a cute $75 piece at Talisman. Phil came out and was very nice and welcoming. Said he was going to use a shorter bar for a better fit. Okay, I say- trusting him as he seems knowledgeable etc. He kindly changes my jewelry and happily I leave the store with Phil reassuring me that if i need anything at all to come back and see him. He stresses that THEY CARE ABOUT AFTERCARE. I note that the jewelry seems a little tight, like the stones are pressing into my skin,just a little swelling he says. Swelling?But I figured he knew better than I. I leave for California the next day and then onto Europe for a month. I keep the piercing as clean as possible but only becomes more tender and I can't clean underneath the jewelry because there is no wiggle room. I get mixed advice about taking it out VS getting it to heal with the jewelry in. Knowing I'm going to be back in Santa Fe soon I decide I will tough it out a little longer. So I get back to town and head over to the Talisman - not to complain, not to return the jewelry - but simply to ask someone who I thought was a pro, what to do. I was not at all angry and was willing to purchase anything he suggested or do whatever. No big deal - stuff happens. So, I go in and it is like a different place. I don't know if they had just gotten some really bad news or what but they could not have been ruder or more uncaring. I was confused by this - I came in smiling and just wanting some help because that's what I expected after a pleasant initial visit. Instead Phil was VERY defensive and kept saying well I don't know what to tell you blah blah blah. I didn't understand the hostility. I wasn't blaming them for anything at this point, I just wanted some help. Obviously, I thought highly enough of him to wait to see him (my mistake). I was very nice and was met with bad attitude. I asked Phil to remove the jewelry (at his suggestion) and he did so but again with attitude - as if I were asking for the moon. He made sure to then inform me that there was no sign of infection - this just after he blamed my hairdresser for the infection and told me to remove it due to said infection. Again, I'm not here to sue you dude, just needed a little aftercare. I looked at the jewelry when we got outside - the underside of the lower stone was crusted with gunk. No sign of infection. Right. I'm a little lost. I waited specifically to follow up with them because I wanted to like The Talisman. Should have just gone to a Dr. or another shop, would have saved me weeks of worry. After it healed I had it successfully re-pierced elsewhere. More money and now even more boring jewelry than before. Sigh. So much for that. I've been told by two artists who have inspected the jewelry from Talisman that the bar is too short making the jewelry too tight. My gift from my Partner currently sits useless in a drawer. Great. Thanks Talisman. You could have easily had a customer for life. I didn't want to give you a bad review but certainly wasn't given much of a choice. read more

Great experience at Talisman! I got tattooed by Sam Castro, being my FIRST TATTOO I was nervous. But Sam was super friendly and set up an appointment for me a week in advance. The day of my appointment I was the first appointment in the shop so she took the time to explain the whole process and got the placement of the tattoo just right. Very sterile and sanitary as well (she uses a one use only needle). My tattoo took 5mins and she did it perfectly! I love my tattoo and the price was reasonable! Also, they sell 100% organic tattoo salve, which put my mind at ease that I was putting good stuff onto my skin. Don't waste your time going to the other well known place in town, Talisman is where its at! read more

Just got my second tattoo done with Nikki and all I can say is she the bomb, she is an excellent artist and takes her time doing exactly what you want and has a wonderful sense of humor along with her excellent customer service skills. Her husband Phil is the guy that does the piecing done and he is as professional as they come. Brittney handles the front and provides everyone with a warm smile and also provides excellent customer service skills. Needless to say that I found the person who will do my tattoos from now on since I moved here in October and was hesitant about finding someone that I felt comfortable with. I waited for my daughter to decide when, and if, she wanted to get her ears pierced. Just recently, after her 9th birthday, she decided that she was ready. I did not want to take her to the mall for a cheap and poorly done piercing so I researched local piercing shops. I don't think I could have made a better decision. Syndesi was absolutely wonderful. He explained the whole process to her and to me and made her feel comfortable and calm throughout the procedure. My tattoo artist, one Mrs. Kristina Huckabee, was stupendously helpful for a first time customer, such as I was. She was both quick and fastidious in her approach and execution. For my first tattoo, small and simplistic as it is, I do not think I could have gone to a better artist. I've been to this place for both piercings and ink. These guys are very unprofessional hustlers an you'd do better by saving your money for another shop around Santa Fe. My experience here has been one to remember and its not because of the work they created. The attitude is very pretentious from the owner and the artist. They're disrespectful, non-empathetic, and will get over on you as far as pricing goes. Earlier this year I got a nose piercing here and I recently went back for a check up and the owner wouldn't give me the time of day. He said it was no longer his problem and to figure it out myself. My girl paid 400 dollars for a mandala design on her hand by the artist Nikki an it was terrible. Nikki's excuse was that she had never done dark skinned people before so better luck to any "dark" skinned humans around town. I was also hustled out of 400 from the artist Kevin for a tree design on my back leg that turned out to be worth not even 100! I regret the decisions we made dearly and is here to save you from the same mistake. read more

Phil is brilliant. I've walked out of dozens of piercing shops all over the country over the past 9 years -- wanting a second ear piercing since the day I left the Army, but very worried about a) sterile/sanitary conditions, b) proper placement, c) cleanliness (again!), and d) being treated with respect. Some piercers are not interested in someone getting a rather tame second lobe piercing. Others work in conditions that look clean on the surface but really aren't. Most just want to get you in and out in 10 minutes if you're going for something conventional. Not so with Phil. Phil took the time to get the placement absolutely perfect. He also took the time to explain everything he was doing to my daughter, who is still on the fence about whether or not to pierce her ears. He did not think a relatively mundane piercing like I wanted was boring or in any way deserving of less attention than something more artistic or daring. And the sanitation procedures -- autoclaved jewelry - went through two pairs of sterile gloves - sealed sterile needles - in a spotlessly clean shop - exceeded even my Army-trained expectations for cleanliness. Phil's aftercare products are fabulous. Today, I have perfectly placed second piercings. Zero pain. Zero infection. If my daughter decides to get her ears pierced, I'm bringing her back to Phil - even though we live in Virginia! read more
