Coming from another state I had a hard time finding tamales like the ones from my home state until today. The BEST tamales I have ever eaten. Went to this place because it had great reviews. However, was pretty disappointed. Had the pork red tamales, and the masa had no flavor or color at all! Was so disappointed.. I think maybe they thought if they spice up the pork people wouldn't notice the masa. But it is very noticeable. I was in the area and saw a storefront with the word tamales and of course I had to go in. The reviews looked positive so I decided to give them a try. I got a couple tamales to try. Let's start with the masa. It was moist and not dry at all. That's a plus. The ratio of filling to masa was balanced. The bean and cheese tamale was flavorful. The rajas and cheese was my favorite. It was pretty spicy. As were the two salsas that it came with. One was a tart green and the other was a smoky tomato. The salsas were spicy but so flavorful. Next time I go, I'll ask for double the salsa. It was that good! They've also got tacos here with a variety of meat options. I would go here again for sure. They have a few tables inside if you want to dine in. read more

I come here for the tamales, though the tacos nothing fancy, they're done so well, they are my favorite in this part of town. The tamales are made ahead, and sometimes the more adventurous combinations are not available. Everything else is cooked to order and has been great. If you're looking for memorable tacos or burritos, I recommend looking elsewhere. The asada was so well chopped that it could have been mistaken for ground beef. Carnitas were nothing special either. The service was friendly and fast, but I don't think this location will be a regular stop. read more

This is pretty good authentic Mexican taqueria (but not tamaleria). The tacos were excellent (moist, meaty, flavorful), but the tamales weren't as good as they were when this place was Tamaleria Lupitas. They was too much masa (it also had a weird greyish tint) and not enough meat in my green pork tamal. Also, it was bone dry and I couldn't really find any flavor at all in my tamal, so I had to add taco sauce (red and green sauce is available in bottles on the tables. The mushroom quesadilla was a surprise hit for me. Quesadillas usually don't excite me (too much cheese, wimpy tortilla), but the ones here were substantial and delicious. Chips and salsa is provided to you if you dine in, which is a nice touch. Service is very friendly and the food is dirt cheap ($2 for a tamal). I would definitely return for tacos and to try the tortas, but I would avoid the tamales. read more

Finally stopped here Saturday afternoon. 2 Lengua, 1 pastor, 1 quesadilla chicken and a supreme taco after we're were full of fresh delicious food! Several families wee I there two. The predecessor in this location (Lupitas) had excellent food. Don Ramon's has the same great quality with an expanded menu. Now, you get chips and fiery salsa delivered to your table. Consider yourself warned - the salsas can be really spicy. Both the tamales and tortas are amazing. Some of the best in the city. Don Ramon's torta might be the best in Indianapolis. I hate giving this place one star because I really wanted to like it based on all the positive reviews. I am wondering if they are under new ownership? We tried 5 different kinds of tamales, and all were very, very dry. The filling to corn masa ratio was also not good. A LOT of dry masa (I would say 70% of the tamale) to very little filling, which was just OK. We ate our meal with a lot of salsa to add moisture. My only other experience with tamales was the Tamale Shop on the west side, which was far superior. They are really not even comparable. Also, as a heads up: the employees speak almost no english, so either brush up on your Spanish or be prepared to speak slowly and clearly. Excellent, family run, no frills, just great quality homemade food. The tamales are among the best I've had. The tacos are the bomb. Don Ramon is the holdover of Tamaleria Lupitas (so for a more detailed review, check out my history as I think I reviewed it twice). When Lupitas closed, a new family bought the joint and re-opened pretty quickly. It's a little different, they've added some nice little amenities to your meal (chips with excellent salsa, more menu options, soups). In all, though, still the same great place that keeps me coming back for more regularly. My usual order - 2 tacos and a tamale, really reasonably priced and I struggle to walk out of the place. Can't say anything bad, just go try it. read more

I havent been here since the change in the ownership and I decided to give them a try today. I ordered 2 Chorizo tacos and 1 Rajas Tamale. Sadly they were out of the Tamales. The tacos here are delicious. Its the closest to authentic I can get close to home. I get the tacos de Chicharrón and Lengua with an Horchata. It's so tasty! The caldo de res also helped me out when I felt like crap. Tastes just like abuelas. :) read more
