I have not spent much time in the Eastside of Indianapolis other than Irvington. Driving through here, you see the blight and the abandonment of this area of Indianapolis since the decline of manufacturing. Then again, it's not an uncommon story unfortunately- large parts of the city forgotten in terms of economic development but then suddenly needed during times of campaigning. Had taken Keystone and then Rural Street to get here, and the potholes are not kind. But, we had this place on our list and were determined to make it here at least once. Tlaolli stood out for its vegan offerings. Plenty of vegan taco options, birria (an absolute rarity to see vegan birria), and torta. They offer soy chorizo, jackfruit, and king oyster mushrooms as protein options. The exterior is colorful, and inside there are seating options. We had gotten our food to go, so I cannot comment too much on the service. Had placed our order online, and the food was ready within the estimated time in the order. We ordered the vegan birria tacos ($17.99), the vegan torta ($10.99 base but added soy chorizo, which was $3.99), and the no-no-no taco ($5.99). Our total with fees was approximately $45. Tlaolli offers outdoor seating, so when the weather is nicer this would be a good place to come. Next to the East Washington IPL branch, Tlaolli has a colorful green exterior with neon signage. Food: The food was very good. The proteins were nicely seasoned and juicy. The highlight for me was the birria tacos and the consome. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed it. 10/10. I've been wanting to try Tlaolli for a long time but always thought of going when they were closed. I was impressed with their level of service and hospitality! The tacos were delicious and I appreciate all of the gluten free and vegan options. I tried a chicken, pork, and vegan for variety. The hibiscus flower taco was unique and surprisingly enjoyable! I will be back to try other flavors and will recommend it to any vegan people I know. They took time explaining the menu and offered to make a quesadilla for my daughter, but she's more of a beans and rice girl. FYI the beans and rice are combined in a bowl and have a kick to them. Finally made it to Tlaolli. Such a hard decision figuring out what I wanted to order so I got chips, green salsa, a short rib taco and a tamale. I really enjoyed everything and the outdoor seating area is very cute. Spent some time talking to the owner, who is incredibly nice. It's hard to find tamales like this in Indy, so it was great to try some that lived up to my tamale experience in Tucson. I definitely want to try other things so I plan to return soon! read more

Wow! I can't believe we haven't come here before. I had this place in my "must try" list for a while and was in the area for dinner. If you want a fantastic tamale, THIS is the place! So flavorful and amazing! The chicken chipotle quesadilla was ordered by my husband and he said the flavors in every bite were outstanding! We got the chips and salsa too. It's not like your chain restaurant salsa. It was wonderful. Had a nice kick to it but not overbearing. If you haven't been here, don't wait any longer! This place was on my list (how can it not be after being on the Best Taco list!) for a while and I finally got the chance to stop in. The owner was extremely friendly (y habla español!) & walked through the menu with me. I'm not vegan/vegetarian myself but given that they had a lot of options in that arena, I opted for a meat option (chicken chipotle) and a meat alternative option (the nonono). Both were quite good. The space is cute & there's both indoor & outdoor seating. It certainly would get crowded fast on a busy day but otherwise a very accommodating place. I had seen this place on DDD and immediately knew I wanted to go. There is plenty of parking which is a big plus for me. Then there's a cute patio that I will definitely be trying when Indy isn't frozen over. The menu is simple and easy to navigate and the woman at the cash register was very helpful. The Vegan Birria tacos were probably the best food I've had in Indy. I am lactose intolerant so I was thrilled at the vegan menu because I feel like my options at Mexican places can be limited. This little hole in the wall taco shop in the middle of no where was most definitely worth the 30 minute drive! It's a cute little family owned restaurant and each taco was extremely unique. They are one of the first taco spots that I have seen accommodate those that are vegan. They had so many options, while I'm not vegan I wanted to try and it was delicious. The wildflower taco was something I've never tried before, the flavor was soo good I couldn't even tell I was eating a flower - which might I say was a first! We were excited to try this restaurant and upon entry we identified that we had never been in before and the gentleman looked at my Chinese husband and me, his Caucasian wife and said, scan the barcode and come back when your ready to order. We sat at the table by the register and watched a Caucasian family enter, identify they were first time and watched him walk them through the menu on the wall explaining in detail the various colors of items and how to differentiate items. Hands down the best Mexican food my family has ever had. LOVED everything I had. Ate the beef jalapeno tamale and chips and guag (with pickled onions YUM) so fast that I didn't get a picture. I did manage to remember to get a pic of the pork ancho taco. My daughter is vegan and she got a combo taco platter - jackfruit, tofu mole and hisbiscus flower - and loved them all. I also got the hibiscus and it was excellent. Service was friendly and fast and the restaurant was cozy. Found this place with a little searching on Yelp. The restaurant is very homey and has a well decorated inside and a cozy outdoor seating area. The inside is small and only has about 6 small tables all pretty close to each other. The tacos have fun unique recipes that sound good, but two of the vegan options, the hibiscus flower and the tofu mushroom mole, didn't have much flavor. You can tell the ingredients are fresh, but they didn't seem cohesive. The third taco, cheese and poblano, was richer and tasted pretty good. I tried the NoNoNo Taco, Jackfruit Asada, and Hibiscus Tacos. All of them were good, but the Nonono was the best of the three. None of them were excellent or mind-blowing for me. There isn't an option for a side order of rice and beans, so I tried the $10 rice and beans. It was good. I'd give this place a 7/10. Good but not amazing. As I sit here chowing on the most incredible bowl of Tlaoli Chicken Soup filled with Rice, chicken chipotle, chips, cilantro cabbage, avocado, lime, crema and cotija - - - I can't hold back from updating my review to sing the praises of this business. I don't come here nearly as often as I should. Every time I leave I think, I need to go here more often - for the fabulous food and good vibes. Back to the soup - it is so flavorful - just the write of spice and smokiness. I could drink it by the bucket and it's perfect for a cool fall day (or any day really). Simply, yum! This place has a wide selection of tacos and tamales and a few other Mexican food items. The service was friendly and nice. They have a wide variety of tacos, both meat and vegan/vegetarian options. Everything tastes high quality and delicious that I have had in my 3 visits to Tlaolli. On the specials board, they have had street corn calabcitas and they are such a delicious side item! Their guac is out of this world, and I just keep on racking up more and more recommendations. I am terrible remembering which tacos I've tried so I always get the trio of tacos with three different flavors (which is sometimes a little too much food for me, so I get a leftover taco for later!) I ordered the jackfruit taco, a hibiscus taco, and a chicken chipotle taco with a hibiscus tea. Get the hibiscus tea. Trust me! It will remind you of fall in a cup. All three tacos were delicious. Many food options and many can be made vegan, which I appreciate especially on friend dates, everyone can eat and leave fulfilled. I love the soy chorizo Tlaolli bowl, and the street corn, it's my usual order. The tacos are really good as well. I went in today and there was no corn, but for good reason. Corn is not currently in season so it's a seasonal dish. I love eating a S.O.U.L. food diet (seasonal organic unprocessed local) and it helps when a it's also important to a restaurant. Everything is made fresh. So be prepared to wait but not very long for your order. Parking lot right next to establishment. I usually park and walk through the tiny pathway. I was finally able to make it to this restaurant and it did not disappoint. There is parking on both side of the restaurant, but make sure you pick the right lot. If you are facing the building, the lot to the left is for the library and they have signs that threaten towing for those not visiting the library. The lot on the left along the wall with the murals is where I parked. The entrance to the restaurant is actually in the back. The restaurant has a medium sized dining are with tables and chairs. There is also a nice patio with seating, but it was way too cold to sit out there. The restaurant is trendy and has a cool vibe The staff was very friendly. The woman that was working to time to explain the menu to me and checked on my a few times after I got my food to make sure that every thing was ok. They have tamales, tacos, bowls and tortas, and stew. The vegan options are in pink, if you are reading the menu. I ordered a pork asado taco, a pork carnitas taco, and a beef tamale. They have bottled drinks if you need something to wash your food down with. It took them about 10 minutes to prepare my food. They brought it out to me at my table. It was very flavor and delicious. The tamale was served on top of and not in corn husk. It was ready to eat. The tacos had the soft shell and was packed was flavor. I really enjoyed my entire meal. It was so very tasty. I highly recommend checking this restaurant out. They have delicious food and first class service. I don't think I've ever had better food at a Mexican restaurant. The name isn't easy to pronounce (Tlah-oh-lee), but the food isn't hard to love. We came out on a Friday night with friends to celebrate my wife's birthday. If you've read my reviews before, you know that food allergies and Celiac disease are part of our challenges when going out to eat. But eating here was effortless. Everything was clearly marked. The establishment's owner, Carlos Hutchinson, was kind and friendly as he helped my wife find safe options. The food came out in a very reasonable time. They prepare their food to order, and you can taste the quality of the ingredients and the preparation. We all ate, and the food quickly disappeared. It was a delicious meal, and I wouldn't hesitate to go back. There are still items on that menu that I want to try. I don't think I'll need to push very hard to get everyone in our group to eat there again. I had the chicken chipotle taco and the Carnitas taco. The chicken was really good but as good as it was, the pork carnitas was the best! The setup here is slightly odd, with the restaurant being visible from the main road but with an entrance on the rear. The immediately adjacent parking lot has angry signs saying that it's only for people at the local library (looked like there was a separate bit of parking around back in an alley), but it seemed I was not the only person who was there for tacos. Having said that, despite the appealing taco menu, I was swayed by a special. My toasted bread with a healthy helping of what seemed liked spiced tofu, along with various accoutrements, was quite colorful and as delicious as it looked. My plate was clean quite quickly (which was good because I made the mistake of sitting at the airy but mosquito-filled picnic tables). While this is not a 100% vegetarian restaurant (and there are a handful of those available in the general area), they do make most menu items available in vegetarian form. I am convinced that the rest of them are likely just as deliciously fresh-tasting as what I got. read more

Driving down Washington on the east side of Indy you cannot miss this cute spot, I drove by it countless times not realizing that this place is Yelp certified gold. My mother is not only Mexican but she is vegan so naturally I was curious about how well Tlaolli delivers on Mexican with vegan options. The vegan tacos are incredible, you wouldn't be disappointed as a vegan or a non-vegan. The tamales must be a hot commodity because I wasn't able to try the chicken mole tamal but I will be back to give my input on that. I had a pork tamal and it was delicious. Last but not least I would like to shout out what vibes this place emits. Great energy by the staff and a lovely patio area for dining. I had driven by this gem for years before finally stopping in, and now it has become my favorite place for tacos in the city. To begin with, I am vegan and it's the only place I have been that serves vegan birria. Furthermore, their other veggie options are phenomenal. The flavors are always on point. My husband and I stumbled across this restaurant when searching for Vegan Food in Indianápolis about 6 yrs ago. Since then we have relocated to North Calorina and every time we come up to Indianapolis, it's a must stop for us! They have both Vegan and Non Vegan options but their healthy twist on Mexican Food is what attracts so many to Tlaolli's. Their Hibiscus Tacos are our favorite but everything we have tried here is full of flavor that keeps us wanting more! The service is excellent. The food here is incredibly flavorful. Tacos and tamales are the main things to go for. Last time I was here I tried the hibiscus taco which was a new to me and I thought it was fantastic. The building is small and there isn't much interior seating, but there are some picnic tables in a nice patio setting to enjoy your meal at on a nice day. If it's not a nice day, I would view this restaurant as a carry out sort of joint. Sometimes if they are hit with a rush they can be a little slow since whoever runs the register is usually assisting with the cooking. They use high quality ingredients which is reflected in the prices. Higher than your average taco/tamale place but for good reason. I went on a date to Tlaolli a few months ago and had a great experience. Came back this week for lunch and tried the vegan birria tacos - wow! I couldn't believe the cheese was vegan.
