After several friends raved about Tamales Nelly, we decided to give them a try. We placed an order online, with pickup on a Friday afternoon. I arrived about 15 minutes early, so they weren't quite ready with my order, but they were preparing it. I liked that you could specify a time for pickup. That was handy in coming there from work. We ordered sopes, pozole (only available on Thursdays and Fridays), along with a dozen tamales, split between pork, chicken and cheese and jalapeños. We at the sopes tonight and they were excellent. They were topped with a generous amount of meat and vegetables. I also had a couple of spoonfuls of posole and it was also very good. While many restaurants use white hominy, they had yellow, which I think has a more pronounced flavor. The women who operate the shop are friendly and take lots of pride in their work. I have no idea why the CENSORS AT YELP CHOSE TO PUT MY REVIEW IN YELP JAIL. Nelly's Tamales is located in the Chow Public Market. This sweet lady prepares tamales every day. Dozen $18, Half-dozen $10 - Pork w/red chili, Chicken w/green chili, Cheese with Jalapeños, Potato with Jalapeños and Veggies. She also will take a special order like Chicken with Jalapeños or Pork with green chili with four days' notice. She has frozen and fresh tamales, so you can also pick up ones that are not on the menu in a frozen condition. The standard daily offering at her little stand is pork with red sauce and chicken with green sauce. In addition to tamales, she offers tacos, enchiladas, burritos and quesadillas. The fillings are Chicken, Asada, Adobada and Cheese served with rice and beans. The masa is smooth and pale. The tamale fillings are very generous. She has three heat levels of salsa to go with the food and I found the hot to be delicious. I detected habanero in it - yum. read more

I had been eager to try Tamales Nelly for some time and finally had a chance. I have to say that it was incredibly disappointing for a number of reasons. First of all, while the $3 price initially seemed good and on a par with what a good street taco might be that could be sufficient for a small meal--this tamale was so tiny and had so little meat in it that it would have taken at least 2 to make even a small meal. The corn masa was extremely salty so that in combination with perhaps a tablespoon of pork that didn't come close to running the length of the tamale made this a big disappointment. What made the overall experience worse was that there were flies everywhere. This is an indoor restaurant that is part of the CHOW Public Market & Eatery at the Boise Spectrum--not an outdoor patio--though the flies were near the counter, flying around where you get the napkins and plasticware, and at the tables where you sit to eat. BTW, the area where the plastic-wrapped flatware was had no forks so when I asked for one, someone from behind the counter handed me an unwrapped fork rather than filling the dispenser with new wrapped ones, which didn't seem too sanitary. I consider myself a tamale sommelier. I've tasted and eaten hundreds of tamales from different regions in Mexico and of course those made here in the United States by family, friends, and restaurateurs. Needless to say, I was super excited, muy emocionado, to discover Tamales Nelly in the Boise Chow Market. I did need to know whether or not their Tamales were made with Manteca, lard, or vegetable oil. I did reach out to them via Messenger and was told that the Potato and Jalapeño Tamales were made with vegetable oil as well as the jalapeño and cheese while the pork and chicken were made with Manteca. I could hardly contain myself this Friday as I made my way to Tamales Nelly to pick up my tamales. The service was friendly and the transaction was quick since I had chatted via Messenger the previous night and they had asked for my name and what I wanted. I arrived home with my bounty of tamales only to discover them to be in pieces. Strands of tamales and in no way or shape did they even look like a tamale. I understand that tamales can be thin and I have seen and eaten some thin ones but never in my life and all my travels in Mexico have I've ever seen a disintegrated tamale with undiscoverable potatoes and one thin piece of jalapeño. I presented my tamale to my wife is was born and raised in Mexico and has accompanied me on all of our travels in Mexico and she said she's never seen tamales like that. To say I was disappointed would be a severe understatement. My kids ate the pork tamales and said they were good, not great but good For reference, my wife has made me plant-based tamales before. Some with potato, potato abs soy chorizo, and others with cheese. They all resembled a tamale, which would be about 2.5 to 3 inches in width and about 5 inches in height. These tamales by Nelly were less than a half-inch in width and about 7 inches in length once mashed together. While the meat tamales may be good, I can't recommend the potato and jalapeño tamales at least not from the batch that was prepared last Friday. I may be willing to give them another try for my family if they are craving tamales but right now my desire for tamales is at an all-time low. read more

One word: Outstanding. Super fresh, well seasoned, quality all the way. This is my 3rd visit. Every time was just as good as the last visit. The rice is fluffy and moist. The beans are hearty and seasoned well. Each tacos (I have tried each one) are not too salty, moist and generous in the portion. Good value for the money. I have yet to try the items outside the street tacos; however, I will plan on trying every item for my future visits. I live out of state and wanted to send my Boise-based partner some delicious tamales. This was my very first experience with Nelly's and I was a little nervous ordering, but WOW did they deliver! First, the email communication was sooth and easy. Karina was very gracious and quick with her responses. I was able to arrange for a delivery on the same day (Sunday). The payment was also super convenient via Square space invoicing. The delivery was very quick and the person making it was lovely. Being able to order some frozen tamales along with freshly made ones was a huge bonus. Now, admittedly, I myself have not had an opportunity to sample them, but my partner (who is a tamale lover) was very impressed! He commented on how smooth the masa was, and how delicious the flavorings of each type (he wants to know what the secret ingredient in the chicken filling is!). I wish my first review was available to update. It appears to be missing. As I said before, I went out of my way by quite a distance to try tamales at a place called Tamales Nelly. I really do love to give great reviews for local businesses.... Unfortunately I cannot in this instance. First off, they were out of tamales. It was pretty early to be out of what is in their name.... So I tried the enchiladas with red sauce instead. The pork was difficult to chew, dry and tough. The red sauce tasted metallic. The beans and rice were very good though. I will try it again if I'm ever near them, though I will not make a special trip. The trust is gone. read more
